There are strong recommendations for IBM i applications to be modernized or migrated to a futuristic platform and there is strong hesitation too which drives the anti-migration sentiment. This leads us to the question; do we need to invest in the skillset of the existing platform or not?

Overview

IBM i being the legacy system, it is targeted for migration by many enterprises owing to various reasons. Here in this blog, we will explore available options for migration in today’s scenario, likelihood of their adoption, the reason for not fast tracking the migration or exit and the need for uplifting the development workforce.

IBM i (widely known as AS/400) has been one of the most strategic systems for many of the mid to large enterprises including Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI). It is in use by all these enterprises for more than 25 to 30 years. It hosts core applications for Banks and Insurers including Core Banking, Card Management, Policy Administration etc. IBM i, as we discuss here, is the entire ecosystem that comes along with IBM i, the hardware, the operating system, the programming languages like RPG, COBOL and CL, database DB2 for i, IBM MQ for messaging, job management, user access, security etc. Legacy Modernization is in discussion within banks for many years now and IBM i is also in the radar for replacement by new technologies because of the challenges related to IBM i platform specific skillset (RPG, COBOL), monolith architecture of applications leading to agility issues, interoperability with other platforms and DevOps tools, not aligned to strategic investments, missing most of the cloud benefits (e.g., on-demand capacity) etc. At the same time, there are number of reasons why migration is being postponed. Some of them are, new hardware releases, OS releases, extended support window, the current investments on heavy infrastructure, migration risk and cost. Here, we try to gauge the early possibilities of its exit so that the dependency on its SMEs shall be predicted.

Our perspective

Over the period, the business has grown, business requirements have grown, various risks have grown, compliance and regulatory requirements have grown and eventually all these have been captured and taken care within one single monolith application for each enterprise. And hence the high level of complexity having the concentration of all the knowledge, the business rules, the business processes. Added to this all the technical implementations like multi-threading, messaging, job scheduling, job control etc., are also part of the monolith implementation.

With the advent of Cloud, DevOps and Agile practices, industries and enterprises including bankers and insurers are looking for transformation of IBM i applications as well to reap the latest features and benefits. Enterprises are having multiple options in-front of them. This platform can follow agile practices and be part of DevOps world with ARCAD solutions. One of the large UK banks has adopted DevOps on IBM i successfully. The recently launched IBM i Merlin Platform (Modernization Engine for Lifecycle Integration) helps this with integrated IDE, CI/CD Merlin tools for DevOps experience along with IBM i virtual machine provisioning, REST APIs management etc., and brings hope for complete DevOps eco system in the future. recent developments help in agility of IBM i environments and re-hosting its applications. The system administration of this platform shall be offloaded by migrating infrastructure directly to IBM Cloud or to Skytap on Azure and IBM Cloud or to Connectria on AWS. Infinite i is in rescue to re-host the applications on Azure or AWS or Google Cloud. All these options shall be categorized as either in-place modernization or pseudo-modernization and have dependency on IBM i skillset.

Tool sets from Fresche, Google (G4) provide one to one conversion (refactor) of IBM i native source codes and opens the gateway for deployment of the application on open systems and cloud. But the preference for this option is fading considering the maintainability and futuristic view for large enterprises like banks. Banks and more specifically Insurers have very dynamic business needs like ever increasing regulatory and compliance demands and hence the need for highly maintainable code base.

Leaving the in-place modernization (last resort) and refactor, the other options can be largely grouped into one of the two options namely, COTS replacement or rewriting the entire application. These options have their own pros and cons. For most of the mid and large sized banks and banks with multi-country or multi-geography operations, the core applications are their treasure, their strength, and the enabler for what they are. So, COTS adoption rate will be limited because of the exact fitment of COTS application for the bank’s rich capabilities such as cards processing, loyalty, and rewards management.

Now, the banks are left with the other option which is rewrite. As everyone knows, rewriting the existing application (functionally equivalent but architecturally current) into a target landscape is almost like building a new application. Reverse engineering tools from Fresche and ARCAD help speeding up with the rules extraction. The new way of development powered with Agile, DevOps, Test Automation etc., the rewrite may not take too long but it will not be short as well. Some of the large banks tried rewrite and experimenting. Many banks are showing interest in rewriting but looking for a cost effective, robust and risk free or reduced risk migrations which is still far off.

Apart from the expected timeline for rewrite, the factors like strategic decision on target landscape, target technologies, target architecture, the regulatory and compliance challenges, organizational changes to adopt the transformational activities, the current investment on heavy infrastructures etc., are going to impact the overall IBM i migration timeline for most of the Banks.

IBM is also continually investing and upgrading the Power servers (Power10 based servers launched in 2021) and IBM i (7.5 released in May 2022) on regular basis along with support for open technologies as well to keep the momentum on retaining this platform. The support window (in general 7+3 years - Normal + Extended) and the re-usability of Power servers for other environments (AIX) are some of the important factors giving additional space for decision making (no rush to exit the platform).

Conclusion

With all these factors, the need for running the IBM i applications continue to stay high for many more years. It means, these applications should be supported, maintained, and enhanced till the enterprises find an effective viable alternate. But at the same time, it is getting more and more difficult to engage the workforce on IBM i skill set. It is time to uplift the development workforce by leveraging the enhanced IDEs and tools for this platform.

3. Oracle Certified Professional, MySQL 5.7 Database Administrator 

Oracle runs its certifications under the auspices of Oracle University. The Oracle Database Certifications page lists separate tracks for Database Application Development (SQL and PL/SQL), MySQL (Database Administration and Developer) and Oracle Database (versions 12c, 12c R2, and 11g, and Oracle Spatial 11g). 

MySQL is perhaps the leading open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). Since acquiring Sun Microsystems in 2010 (which had previously acquired MySQL AB), Oracle has rolled out a paid version of MySQL and developed certifications to support the product. 

A candidate interested in pursuing an Oracle MySQL certification can choose between MySQL Database Administration and MySQL Developer. The Oracle Certified Professional, MySQL 5.7 Database Administrator (OCP) credential recognizes professionals who can install, optimize and monitor MySQL Server; configure replication; apply security; and schedule and validate database backups. 

The certification requires candidates to pass a single exam (the same exam can be taken to upgrade a prior certification). Oracle recommends training and on-the-job experience before taking the exam.

4. Oracle Database 12c Administrator

Most Oracle DBMS credentials require candidates to attend authorized training classes to qualify for the related exam, but MySQL (and Sun-derived) credentials often do not. Oracle certifications also represent a true ladder, in that it is generally necessary to earn the associate-level credentials first, professional-level credentials second and master-level credentials third, culminating with the expert level. 

Oracle Database 12c R2 is the latest version, which includes enhancements to Oracle Database 12c. Oracle 12c certifications are currently offered at the associate, professional and master levels.

While 85% of respondents in India have adopted a hybrid cloud approach that can help drive digital transformation, the majority of them are struggling with the complexity to make all their cloud environments work together, according to a new market research from IBM.

As organizations face skills gaps, security challenges, and compliance obstacles, only 30% of Indian respondents manage their hybrid cloud environments holistically – which can create blind spots and put data at risk.

The IBM Transformation Index: State of Cloud commissioned by IBM and conducted by independent research firm, The Harris Poll, was created to help organizations map their cloud transformation and empower them to self-classify their progress. The Index consisted of more than 3,000 business and technology decision makers from 12 countries including India, and across 15 industries including financial services, manufacturing, government, telecommunications, and healthcare.

The Index points to a strong correlation between hybrid cloud adoption and progress in digital transformation. In fact, 76% of those surveyed think it’s difficult to realize the full potential of a digital transformation without having a solid hybrid cloud strategy in place. At the same time, only 39% of Indian respondents said that they have proven the benefits of cloud and are now focused on using it more fully.

“As we see regulatory requirements grow across the globe, compliance is top of mind for business leaders. This concern is even greater for those in highly regulated industries. Yet at the same time, they are facing a growing threat landscape – one that demands holistic management of their multi-cloud environments to avoid the risks of a Frankencloud – an environment that’s so disconnected, it’s difficult to navigate and can be nearly impossible to secure, particularly against third- and fourth-party risks,” said Howard Boville, head of IBM Cloud Platform.

“An integration strategy to bring together these different piece parts is what we believe separates the leaders from the rest of the pack – the alternative is to pay the price of the Frankencloud,” added Boville.

In the Indian context, organizations must quickly take stock of where they are on their cloud journey and focus on bridging the gaps related to skills, security, compliance, among others, said Viswanath Ramaswamy, vice president, Technology, IBM Technology Sales, IBM India/ South Asia. “A pragmatic holistic approach to hybrid cloud can drive immense business value by accelerating innovation, improving cost efficiency and increasing productivity.”  

Although the research cited the lack of cloud skills as a major challenge, 81% of the Indian respondents said they are creating new positions and teams to fulfil the need for more cloud skills.

The IBM Transformation Index: State of Cloud commissioned by IBM and conducted by independent research firm, The Harris Poll, was created to help organizations map their cloud transformation and empower them to self-classify their progress. Built on a foundation that leverages insights from experienced cloud professionals, enterprises can use the Index to gain measurable metrics that can help quantify their progress and uncover areas of opportunity and growth. The Index consisted of more than 3,000 business and technology decision-makers from 12 countries and across 15 industries including financial services, manufacturing, government, telecommunications and healthcare, to understand where organizations are advancing, or merely emerging, on their transformation journeys.

The Index points to a strong correlation between hybrid cloud adoption and progress in digital transformation. In fact, 71% of those surveyed think it's difficult to realize the full potential of a digital transformation without having a solid hybrid cloud strategy in place. At the same time, only 27% of those surveyed possess the necessary characteristics to be considered as "advanced" in their transformation. So, why the disconnect? A sampling of findings include:

  • Compliance: Businesses believe ensuring compliance in the cloud is currently too difficult – especially as we see enforcement of regulatory and compliance requirements heat up across the globe.
  • Security: While businesses have embraced a variety of security techniques to secure workloads in the cloud, concerns about security still remain.
  • Skills: As organizations face the realities of a talent shortage, they are failing to implement a holistic hybrid cloud strategy – which can create gaps in security and compliance and cause risk across cloud environments.

Lack of the right skills is inhibiting progress 
When it comes to managing their cloud applications, 69% of respondents say their team lacks the skills needed to be proficient. This is a major roadblock to innovation, with more than a quarter of respondents saying skills and talent shortages are impeding their business's cloud objectives. The effects don't stop here – these limitations are also preventing organizations from leveraging the power of partnerships. More than one-third of respondents say a lack of technical skills is holding them back from integrating ecosystem partners into cloud environments. This challenge is even greater in the US, where nearly 40% admit to this lack of skills – pointing to the need for talent.

Exposure to cyberthreats continues to lurk despite embracing security techniques
While more than 90% of responding financial services, telecommunications and government organizations have adopted security tools such as confidential computing capabilities, multifactor authentication and more, gaps remain that are preventing organizations from driving innovation. In fact, 32% of overall respondents cite security as the top barrier for integrated workloads across environments and more than one quarter of respondents agree security concerns present a roadblock to achieving their cloud business goals.

Security concerns can even hold organizations back from unlocking the full potential of partnerships. As potential security gaps can cause third and fourth party risks to loom, respondents say data governance (49%) and cybersecurity (47%) are the top challenges to fully integrating their business ecosystem into the cloud. In Brazil, cyberthreats are an even greater concern to ecosystem innovation -- 51% say cybersecurity risks pose a major challenge for businesses that want to integrate business ecosystem partners into cloud environments.

Regulatory and compliance requirements remain center stage causing businesses to pause
With regulations on the rise, so too are compliance challenges. 53% of respondents believe that ensuring compliance in the cloud is currently too difficult and nearly one-third cite regulatory compliance issues as a key barrier for integrating workloads across private and public IT environments. In financial services, for example, more than a quarter of respondents agree that meeting industry requirements is holding them back from fully achieving their cloud objectives. These challenges span the globe and are especially prevalent in countries such as Singapore, China, India and Japan.

Based on the Index, IBM will launch an interactive tool to serve as a continual source of feedback for organizations to measure their transformation progress. With the ability to help companies assess how they fare against others, the tool will allow them to identify areas where transformation is stalled and where it may be excelling – unlocking the ability to diagnose and act with efficiency even against the real-world of complexity of cloud transformation.

IBM will make the IBM Transformation Index: State of Cloud tool publicly available in the coming months, aiming to provide business leaders with valuable benchmarking insights that can inform their hybrid cloud strategies. The IBM Institute for Business Value also published a new report, "A Comparative Look at Enterprise Cloud Strategy" with an action guide for how leaders can use the Index to help advance their organizations' digital transformation.

Methodology:
This survey was conducted online in 12 countries (US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, India, Japan, China, Brazil, Spain, Singapore, Australia) by The Harris Poll on behalf of IBM from June 8th, 2022 to July 17th, 2022. The survey was conducted among 3,014 IT and business professionals in companies with annual revenue over $500M who have deep knowledge of their organization's Cloud strategy. Killexams : CUET UG 2022: All you need to know about the exam format, history & concerns

The National Testing Agency (NTA) released results of the maiden Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate (CUET-UG) admissions late on Thursday night with almost 20,000 candidates scoring 100percentile in around 30 subjects.

The union government had in March announced that it will conduct CUET-UG, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and made its score a mandatory yardstick for all central universities while keeping it optional for others.

At least 90 universities are participating in the CUET-UG this year.

While the NTA– an autonomous testing agency under the union ministry of education was entrusted to conduct the exam–, the higher education regulation University Grants Commission (UGC) worked as its nodal agency for the exam.

The debut edition of CUET-UG was conducted in six phases between July 15 and August 30 across 489 examination centres located in 259 cities across India and 10 cities abroad.

A total of 14,90,000 candidates had registered for the examination that witnessed 60% consolidated attendance in all six phases.

Origin of CUET

In 2010, the government had set up 12 new central universities across the country, and introduced a common entrance exam known as Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) for them. Till 2021, those 12 central universities, including central universities of Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala Jammu and Punjab, were conducting admissions through it.

Later in 2020, when NEP was launched, it envisaged a common entrance exam for all universities. To implement the policy recommendations, the UGC had in 2020 set up a seven-member committee headed by VC of Central University of Punjab, RP Tiwari, to prepare the modalities for the common entrance exam.

After several rounds of discussion. UGC submitted its recommendations in December 2020 and suggested implementing them from 2021-22.

However, the UGC had put it on hold in view of the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In March this year, UGC announced the implementation of the exam under the title CUET from the session 2022-23 and made it the sole criterion for admission to undergraduate courses in all central universities.

Until now, many universities were either enrolling students on the basis of their class 12 performance or were conducting their individual entrance exams.

Why a common entrance exam?

While introducing CUET-UG, the UGC had said it would reduce the burden of students. “The students right now are applying to different universities and appearing in different entrance exams for undergraduate admissions. At the same time, they also have to focus on their board exams to get 99% and 100% marks. We should not assume that all central universities were conducting admissions on the basis of class 12 marks. Many universities have already been conducting their individual entrance exams for undergraduate admissions. Multiple exams were causing a lot of stress not just among the students but also their parents,” UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar had said.

“Another reason why the NEP 2020 advocated for a ‘one nation one entrance exam’ is to provide equal opportunity to students from different backgrounds and different education boards. It will provide a kind of level playing ground for the students,” he had said.

The criticism

A section of students, parents, teachers and principal raised concerns over making CUET-UG the sole criteria for undergraduate admissions. They argued that not giving any weightage to class 12 marks in the admission process will make board exams “irrelevant”. Another criticism was on the syllabus of CUCET-UG as it was “strictly” based on NCERT syllabus. People questioned how it would provide equal opportunity to students from other boards, ISC or state boards. Lastly, there were apprehensions that CUET may also mutate into a coaching driven competition like most entrance exams are in the country.

Exam pattern

The CUET-UG was a computer-based exam and was conducted in multiple choice questions (MCQ) format. It was divided into four sections namely, I-A, I-B, II, and III. Section I-A and I-B consisted of language subjects. Section II was domain specific and section III was a general test.

A candidate was allowed to choose a maximum of any three languages from Section I-A and Section I-B together, and up to six domain subjects. It means, overall, candidates could take a test in a maximum of nine subjects, i.e., two languages + six domain specific subjects + one general test or three languages + five domain specific subjects + one general test.

The exam will be strictly based on the class 12 NCERT syllabus.

The hiccups

The exam, which was initially planned in two phases, had to be conducted in six phases due to multiple cancellations and postponement of papers after technical issues were reported at the examination centres. While the first phase was conducted in July, the remaining five phases were held throughout August. The initial phases of CUET were marred with technical and administrative glitches. While on August 4, all exams scheduled in the evening shift were cancelled at all 489 centres across the country, 50 and 53 centres were affected on August 5 and 6, respectively.

However, the NTA rescheduled exams for all affected students and extended the dates till August 30.

How CUET-UG was different from NEET, JEE?

In case of both, the National Eligibility Criteria Test (NEET) for admission to medical courses, and the Joint Entrance exam (JEE) for engineering admissions, there are no subject combinations. It is either Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry and Biology and everybody takes these combinations only.

However, in CUET-UG, each of the 1.49lakh candidates had applied for at least five universities choosing around 54,000 subject combinations. That makes CUET-UG a big exercise.

What next?

The NTA will provide universities with the CUET-UG scores of students who have applied for admission to that particular university. The universities will then prepare their individual cut-off list using those scores and conduct their counseling sessions for admission. Students will have to visit the admission portal of the universities they have applied for and complete the registration process.

Meanwhile, the government is likely to conduct CUET-UG twice next year– one in March-April and the other in November-December – to provide more opportunities to students.

ARMONK, N.Y., Sept. 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- New global market research from IBM (NYSE: IBM) revealed that more than 77% of respondents have adopted a hybrid cloud approach which can help drive digital transformation, yet the majority of responding organizations are struggling with the complexity to make all their cloud environments work together. As organizations face skills gaps, security challenges and compliance obstacles, less than one quarter of respondents across the globe manage their hybrid cloud environments holistically – which can create blind spots and put data at risk.

The IBM Transformation Index: State of Cloud commissioned by IBM and conducted by independent research firm, The Harris Poll, was created to help organizations map their cloud transformation and empower them to self-classify their progress. Built on a foundation that leverages insights from experienced cloud professionals, enterprises can use the Index to gain measurable metrics that can help quantify their progress and uncover areas of opportunity and growth. The Index consisted of more than 3,000 business and technology decision-makers from 12 countries and across 15 industries including financial services, manufacturing, government, telecommunications and healthcare, to understand where organizations are advancing, or merely emerging, on their transformation journeys.

The Index points to a strong correlation between hybrid cloud adoption and progress in digital transformation. In fact, 71% of those surveyed think it's difficult to realize the full potential of a digital transformation without having a solid hybrid cloud strategy in place. At the same time, only 27% of those surveyed possess the necessary characteristics to be considered as "advanced" in their transformation. So, why the disconnect? A sampling of findings include:

  • Compliance: Businesses believe ensuring compliance in the cloud is currently too difficult – especially as we see enforcement of regulatory and compliance requirements heat up across the globe.
  • Security: While businesses have embraced a variety of security techniques to secure workloads in the cloud, concerns about security still remain.
  • Skills: As organizations face the realities of a talent shortage, they are failing to implement a holistic hybrid cloud strategy – which can create gaps in security and compliance and cause risk across cloud environments.

Lack of the right skills is inhibiting progress 
When it comes to managing their cloud applications, 69% of respondents say their team lacks the skills needed to be proficient. This is a major roadblock to innovation, with more than a quarter of respondents saying skills and talent shortages are impeding their business's cloud objectives. The effects don't stop here – these limitations are also preventing organizations from leveraging the power of partnerships. More than one-third of respondents say a lack of technical skills is holding them back from integrating ecosystem partners into cloud environments. This challenge is even greater in the US, where nearly 40% admit to this lack of skills – pointing to the need for talent.

Exposure to cyberthreats continues to lurk despite embracing security techniques
While more than 90% of responding financial services, telecommunications and government organizations have adopted security tools such as confidential computing capabilities, multifactor authentication and more, gaps remain that are preventing organizations from driving innovation. In fact, 32% of overall respondents cite security as the top barrier for integrated workloads across environments and more than one quarter of respondents agree security concerns present a roadblock to achieving their cloud business goals.

Security concerns can even hold organizations back from unlocking the full potential of partnerships. As potential security gaps can cause third and fourth party risks to loom, respondents say data governance (49%) and cybersecurity (47%) are the top challenges to fully integrating their business ecosystem into the cloud. In Brazil, cyberthreats are an even greater concern to ecosystem innovation -- 51% say cybersecurity risks pose a major challenge for businesses that want to integrate business ecosystem partners into cloud environments.

Regulatory and compliance requirements remain center stage causing businesses to pause
With regulations on the rise, so too are compliance challenges. 53% of respondents believe that ensuring compliance in the cloud is currently too difficult and nearly one-third cite regulatory compliance issues as a key barrier for integrating workloads across private and public IT environments. In financial services, for example, more than a quarter of respondents agree that meeting industry requirements is holding them back from fully achieving their cloud objectives. These challenges span the globe and are especially prevalent in countries such as Singapore, China, India and Japan.

Based on the Index, IBM will launch an interactive tool to serve as a continual source of feedback for organizations to measure their transformation progress. With the ability to help companies assess how they fare against others, the tool will allow them to identify areas where transformation is stalled and where it may be excelling – unlocking the ability to diagnose and act with efficiency even against the real-world of complexity of cloud transformation.

IBM will make the IBM Transformation Index: State of Cloud tool publicly available in the coming months, aiming to provide business leaders with valuable benchmarking insights that can inform their hybrid cloud strategies. The IBM Institute for Business Value also published a new report, "A Comparative Look at Enterprise Cloud Strategy" with an action guide for how leaders can use the Index to help advance their organizations' digital transformation.

Methodology:
This survey was conducted online in 12 countries (US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, India, Japan, China, Brazil, Spain, Singapore, Australia) by The Harris Poll on behalf of IBM from June 8th, 2022 to July 17th, 2022. The survey was conducted among 3,014 IT and business professionals in companies with annual revenue over $500M who have deep knowledge of their organization's Cloud strategy.
