Of the 5.9 million children who die each year, poor nutrition plays a role in at least half these deaths. That’s wrong. Hunger isn’t about too many people and too little food. It’s about power, and its roots lie in inequalities in access to resources and opportunities.

Broadcom ends VMware perpetual license sales, testing customers and partners
The logo of American cloud computing and virtualization technology company VMware is seen at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the telecom industry's biggest annual gathering, in Barcelona on March 2, 2023.

Broadcom has moved forward with plans to transition VMware, a virtualization and cloud computing company, into a subscription-based business. As of December 11, it no longer sells perpetual licenses with VMware products. VMware, whose $61 billion acquisition by Broadcom closed in November, also announced on Monday that it will no longer sell support and subscription (SnS) for VMware products with perpetual licenses. Moving forward, VMware will only offer term licenses or subscriptions, according to its VMware blog post.

VMware customers with perpetual licenses and active support contracts can continue using them. VMware "will continue to provide support as defined in contractual commitments," Krish Prasad, senior vice president and general manager for VMware's Cloud Foundation Division, wrote. But when customers' SnS terms end, they won't have any support.

Broadcom hopes this will force customers into subscriptions, and it's offering "upgrade pricing incentives" that weren't detailed in the blog for customers who switch from perpetual licensing to a subscription.

These are the products affected, per Prasad's blog:

  • VMware Aria Automation
  • VMware Aria Suite
  • VMware Aria Operations
  • VMware Aria Operations for Logs
  • VMware Aria Operations for Networks
  • VMware Aria Universal
  • VMware Cloud Foundation
  • VMware HCX
  • VMware NSX
  • VMware Site Recovery Manager
  • VMware vCloud Suite
  • VMware vSAN
  • VMware vSphere

Subscription-based future

Broadcom is looking to grow VMware's EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) from about $4.7 billion to about $8.5 billion in three years, largely through shifting the company's business model to subscriptions, Tom Krause, president of the Broadcom Software Group, said during a December 7 earnings call, per Forbes.

"This shift is the natural next step in our multi-year strategy to make it easier for customers to consume both our existing offerings and new innovations. VMware believes that a subscription model supports our customers with the innovation and flexibility they need as they undertake their digital transformations," VMware's blog said.

With changes effective immediately upon announcement, the news might sound abrupt. However, in May, soon after announcing its plans to acquire VMware, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan signaled a “rapid transition” to subscriptions.

At the time, Tan pointed to the importance of maintaining current VMware customers' happiness, as well as leveraging the VMware sales team already in place. However, after less than a month of the deal's close, reports point to concern among VMWare customers and partners.

Customer and partner concerns

VMware's blog said "the industry has already embraced subscription as the standard for cloud consumption." For years, software and even hardware vendors and investors have been pushing IT solution provider partners and customers toward recurring revenue models. However, VMware built much of its business on the perpetual license model. As noted by The Stack, VMware in February noted that perpetual licensing was the company's "most renowned model."

VMware's blog this week listed "continuous innovation" and "faster time to value" as customer benefits for subscription models but didn't detail how it came to those conclusions.

"Predictable investments" is also listed, but it's hard to imagine a more predictable expense than paying for something once and having supported access to it indefinitely (assuming you continue paying any support costs). Now, VMware and its partners will be left convincing customers that their finances can afford a new monthly expense for something they thought was paid for. For Broadcom, though, it's easier to see the benefits of turning VMware into more of a reliable and recurring revenue stream.

Additionally, Broadcom's layoffs of at least 2,837 VMware employees have brought uncertainty to the VMware brand. A CRN report in late November pointed to VMware partners hearing customer concern about potential price raises and a lack of support. C.R. Howdyshell, CEO of Advizex, which reportedly made $30 million in VMware-tied revenue in 2022, told the publication that partners and customers were experiencing "significant concern and chaos” around VMware sales. Another channel partner noted to CRN the layoff of a close VMware sales contact.

But Broadcom has made it clear that it wants to "complete the transition of all VMware by Broadcom solutions to subscription licenses," per Prasad's blog.

The company hopes to convince skeptical channel partners that they'll see the way, too. VMware, like many tech companies urging subscription models, pointed to "many partners" having success with subscription models already and "opportunity for partners to engage more strategically with customers and deliver higher-value services that drive customer success."

However, because there's no immediate customer benefit to the end of perpetual licenses, those impacted by VMware's change in business strategy have to assess how much they're willing to pay to access VMware products moving forward.

Hunger and Livelihoods

Save the Children’s research suggests that income shortages in poorer households, when combined with shocks such as natural disasters or conflict, reinforce poor health and nutrition and thereby lead to higher rates of child deaths.

Hunger also keeps children out of school and limits their ability to concentrate once in school. Studies conducted by Save the Children indicate that learning achievement among children from poor families is systemically lower than their peers.

An increasing number of young people live in a state of poverty, unemployment and/or underemployment. Over one-fourth of young people in the world cannot find a job paying more than $1.25 per day, the international threshold of extreme poverty. Three quarters of young workers ages 15-29 are employed in the informal sector, increasing the possibility of exploitative or hazardous working conditions.

Save the Children’s Household Economy Approach (HEA) outcome analyses have found that the cycle of vulnerability due to chronic hunger and a lack of livelihoods security may lead poorer households and children to pursue unsustainable and dangerous livelihoods opportunities, to withdraw children from school, or to encourage early child marriage or harmful child labor.

Food security, livelihoods protection and strengthening, and poverty alleviation programs are an essential underpinning to ensuring the survival, education and protection of children, such that the intergenerational cycle of poverty can be broken.

To address this, Save the Children:

  • Provides food assistance to families following a natural disaster or emergency.
  • Builds household and community resilience to food security and economic shocks and stresses.
  • Strengthens socio-economic conditions to Strengthen standards of living and the ability of families to provide for their children.
  • Provides youth with the skills and linkages they need to earn and manage a decent income.

A $50 million modernization project is underway at the DMV

After years of trying to update decades-old IT infrastructure, the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles has started a massive $50 million project to overhaul its computer systems and expand online services for customers.

The DMV rolled out the first phase of its two-part modernization project in mid-November, introducing a new online portal for digital services and beginning an update of the department’s internal IT infrastructure.

The transition included the first steps in completely replacing the department’s 50 year-old core mainframe system. The department also changed its point-of-sale system, where payment transactions are processed.

“Really what we’re trying to do is to automate a lot of manual activity, resulting in more efficiency for the department, better service for our customers and for businesses,” said DMV Commissioner Wanda Minoli, in an interview.

Phase two, set to roll-out in mid-2025, will primarily feature internal changes related to services for the Vermont’s drivers as the department completes its shift to the new mainframe system.

State agencies in Vermont have historically struggled to execute major IT overhauls, and the DMV is no exception. Efforts to bring the motor vehicle department’s technology up to date trace as far back as 2006, when the state invested approximately $18 million in an ill-fated attempt to overhaul the department’s IT systems.

This time around, however, officials say the effort has been a success.

“We have had some bad experiences with IT projects in the past, some experiences where you just can’t seem to get to the end of them,” said state Rep. Laura Sibilia I-Dover, who sits on the state’s Joint Information Technology Oversight Committee.

Despite the large cost and trouble, Sibilia said that such projects are “not optional” moving forward. “This is how modern government and society functions,” she said.

“This is a major, major undertaking at the DMV,” said Sibilia. “As best we can see, the commissioner has just done a terrific job working with the Agency of Digital Services and outside consultants to get the first part of this project done on time, and that’s a great service to Vermonters.”

The current project comes as a part of Vermont’s broader push to update IT infrastructure throughout state government.

In 2022, the state created a special fund of just over $50 million to pay IT modernization projects. Over $20 million of that has been allocated to the DMV, which is also relying on funds from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, the state general fund and its existing budget, according to Minoli.

“Our processing time was just unbelievable,” said Minoli of the old system. “We were working with multiple different database systems that didn’t talk to one another.” Minoli noted that some transactions could require different employees to enter the same data up to 7 different times and could thus take up to 30 days to process.

With the elimination of those extra steps, most transactions can now be completed on the spot at the DMV offices, which as a result no longer needs to provide documents like temporary license plates.

“Say you came in to register a new vehicle, you would leave with temporary documents, you’d leave with the temporary plate and all of that,” explained Minoli. “Then it would go into the back room and we would process it, we would process the title, put all of the information into our systems, and then mail you some duplicative information with your official documents.”

“When you come in now, you will leave with your license plates. You will leave with your title. You will leave with your registration,” said Minoli. “You are done with the DMV.”

But the IT upgrades won’t necessarily slash wait times at local DMV branches — at least not right away.

Minoli said in a written statement that it was “too early to provide any concrete data” demonstrating that recent changes had substantially decreased wait times.

The commissioner also emphasized that staff shortages remain an obstacle to lower wait times, noting that the agency was experiencing a 15% total job vacancy rate at DMV offices across the state.

As DMV employees continue to get accustomed to the new system, certain transactions may also take longer even as overall backroom processing times decrease.

“For now, things are a little more complicated just because it’s a brand new system and everyone’s still learning,” said Paul Chunn, a DMV district supervisor based in the South Burlington branch, in an interview.

“Transactions themselves typically take a few minutes longer at this point. The more we familiarize ourselves with the system, you know, the speed naturally comes along with that, as with any kind of training,” he said.

“I think the new system is going to help customer flow,” Chunn said. “I know in our old system we always had people coming back because they had issues because something was keyed wrong or something like that, but now that we’re doing everything on the front line, the system is able to catch a lot of potential issues and there are going to be a lot fewer errors down the line.”

Chunn also expressed his optimism that the increase in electronic services would make the DMVs in-person operations more efficient.

“In terms of business, I think, comparing what we’re doing now compared to the beginning of the year, I find that there’s actually fewer people coming to the DMV and more people are doing things online and through the mail,” said Chunn.

Kubernetes Hit: VMware Tanzu Injected In vSphere, vSAN, VxRail

Here are the six new VMware offerings integrated with VMware Tanzu, along with new software launches such as HCI Mesh and the vSAN Data Persistence platform.

VMware Integrating Kubernetes Everywhere

VMware is continuing its massive Kubernetes march with the launch today of new product releases for vSphere, vSAN, VxRail and VMware Cloud Foundation injected with VMware Tanzu in a move to push customers to more rapidly adopt Kubernetes.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based virtualization superstar also unleashed on Tuesday new software offerings such as HCI Mesh and the vSAN Data Persistence platform, along with enhanced scaling capabilities and new Tanzu editions.

VMware is seeking to dominate the Kubernetes market with its VMware Tanzu platform of services designed to deliver enterprise-grade Kubernetes at scale. VMware’s growing portfolio includes Tanzu Application Service, its centralized management platform Tanzu Mission Control, as well as Tanzu Kubernetes Grid that enables customers to run a multi-cluster Kubernetes environment on any infrastructure with built-in security. Customers can combine Tanzu with solutions such as VMware Cloud Foundation and vSphere to provide infrastructure and application management for cloud-native adoption.

Here are the new VMware software offerings and Tanzu integrations the company unveiled on Tuesday.

VMware vSphere 7 With Tanzu; ‘Monster VMs’

VMware launched today its vSphere 7 update 1, which will provide an easy way for vSphere customers to get started with Kubernetes and modernize the 70 million-plus workloads currently running on vSphere. Customers can now quickly set up and provision Kubernetes clusters in support of modern applications.

vSphere 7 Update 1 has expanded support for the number of hosts per cluster by 50 percent for a total of 96 hosts per cluster. Additionally, vSphere 7 Update 1 VMs scale up to 24 terabytes and 768 vCPUs to deliver “monster VMs” in support of resource intensive applications such as in-memory databases, said VMware.

vSphere with Tanzu will allow customers to configure enterprise-grade Kubernetes infrastructure with their existing network and block or file storage in less than an hour. This includes allowing customers to extend vSphere Distributed Switch support for Kubernetes clusters and deploy NSX Advanced Load Balancer Essentials or choose their own layer-four load balancing solutions.

Additionally, when using VMware vCenter Server, customers can deploy Kubernetes clusters in minutes, provision role-based access and allocate capacity to developers. The new VMware Tanzu integration allows administrators to manage compliant and conformant Kubernetes while providing developers self-service access to IT infrastructure.

VMware Cloud Foundation 4.1 With Tanzu

VMware Cloud Foundation is the company’s flagship hybrid cloud platform for managing VMs and orchestrating containers, built on full-stack hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) technology.

On Tuesday, VMware unleashed VMware Cloud Foundation version 4.1 with VMware Tanzu includes the new vSAN Data Persistence platform as well as new remote cluster capabilities enable VMware Cloud Foundation 4.1 to extend its operational capabilities to edge locations and branch offices. Additionally, new vVols integration into VMware Cloud Foundation 4.1 with Tanzu provides a common storage management framework for external storage.

Lastly, VMware Cloud Foundation now has VMware Skyline Support. VMware Skyline brings proactive intelligence to VMware Cloud Foundation by identifying management and workload domains and proactively surfacing VMware Cloud Foundation solution findings.

New vSAN Data Persistence; Partnerships With Dell, Cloudian, DataStax

VMware unveiled its a new vSAN Data Persistence platform. The new platform is aimed at independent software vendors to enable modern stateful services such as object storage and NoSQL databases to integrate with the underlying infrastructure. The integrations will allow customers to run their stateful applications with lower total cost of ownership and simplified operations and management, VMware said.

VMware has formed several new partnerships and co-engineering efforts with Cloudian, DataStax, Dell Technologies and MinIO to integrate and validate their offerings on the vSAN Data Persistence platform. Partners will introduce plug-ins in support of the platform over time.

In conjunction with these vendor partnerships, the new platform will enable developers to use Kubernetes APIs to provision and scale stateful services on-demand in a self-service model with minimal administrator intervention. The vSAN Data Persistence platform also delivers integrated service health and capacity monitoring through dedicated dashboards in VMware vCenter.

Lastly, the new vSAN platform will leverage service-aware infrastructure operations to ensure service availability during infrastructure changes including maintenance and lifecycle management as well as be able to run stateful services with optimal storage efficiency.

VMware vSAN With New HCI Mesh

VMware’s vSAN 7 Update 1 introduces the new HCI Mesh, a software-based approach for disaggregation of compute and storage resources that helps customers to scale incrementally. The new HCI Mesh helps customers to reduce CapEX by sharing capacity across clusters while lowering OpEX as they reduce the amount of storage resources managed by scaling efficiently, VMware said.

The new vSAN 7 Update 1 allows customers to enable compression-only instead of deduplication and compression. Customers will benefit from an increase in usable capacity and improved performance across both all-flash and hybrid systems without compromising space efficiency for databases, according to VMware.

Additionally, vSAN 7 Update 1 now offers all of the most common file service protocols by adding support for the SMB v3 and v2.1 protocols. The vSAN File Services now features Active Directory integration for enterprise-ready file storage and Kerberos support for network authentication. With these new capabilities, VMware said its customers can use vSAN for both block and file storage for most use cases.

VMware Tanzu on VxRail; Dell ‘Only HCI Vendor’ With ‘Fully Integrated Tanzu’

Vxrail is the world’s most popular hyperconverged infrastructure offering which is co-engineered between VMware and Dell EMC. On Tuesday, the two companies unveiled new VMware Tanzu on Dell EMC VxRail integrations to provide multiple, fully integrated HCI options to enable customers to build, run and manage Kubernetes container-based applications.

“To help customers accelerate application modernization, VxRail delivers ‘Kubernetes at Cloud Speed’ with multiple, fully integrated HCI infrastructure options to run vSphere with Tanzu,” said Chad Dunn, Dell Technologies vice president of product management for VxRail in a blog post on Tuesday. “In fact, Dell Technologies is the only HCI vendor offering a fully integrated Tanzu portfolio with reference architecture, cluster, and private cloud offerings - all on VxRail.”

VMware Tanzu on VxRail flexible infrastructure options enable businesses to rapidly adopt Kubernetes to keep pace with the speed of business, Dunn said. The new VxRail with Tanzu includes many of the new software products VMware launch on Tuesday such as HCI Mesh, which enables storage resource sharing across clusters.

Curated VxRail systems come fully integrated and ready to deploy, while providing automated infrastructure deployment and cloud-like resource pooling, elasticity, agility/speed, and programmability to accelerate Kubernetes infrastructure delivery.

“Whether you’re ready to jump into the world of Tanzu, or just looking for the latest innovations in HCI for data center modernization, hybrid cloud adoption, or edge deployments, VxRail has you covered through tight integration with the latest VMware HCI software releases,” said Dunn.

New Tanzu Editions

In conjunction with all of the new Tanzu integrations and features, VMware is introducing VMware Tanzu editions which packages portfolio capabilities that address the most common enterprise requirements to modernize infrastructure and applications.

The VMware Tanzu editions consist of Basic, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise.

VMware Tanzu Basic is an add-on to vSphere that entitles customers to run Kubernetes as part of their vSphere environment.

The VMware Tanzu Standard edition enables customers to run and manage Kubernetes across multiple clouds with a single, open source aligned distribution, and centralized management of policy across clouds, clusters and teams.

The Basic and Standard editions will be available this quarter, while VMware did not provide any details on the Advanced and Enterprise editions will be available later this year.
