The pleasure we take from food is an important human good. Having recently enjoyed a food-centric holiday season, we should look back on its comforts and delights — the crisp, glistening latkes, the marzipan-studded stollen, the jam-bellied butter cookies — with fondness and relish, not guilt, shame, or self-hatred. Food connects us to ourselves, and with each other, and there are real harms in teaching people to reframe the pleasure they take from such fare as a problem to be treated with medication. Given that 81 percent of the people taking Wegovy in the United States last year were female, according to data from its manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, we can see this trend as part of a perpetual devaluing of female pleasure and the shaming of women’s visceral appetites. A tweet from the famed — and famously sensuous — English food writer Nigella Lawson earlier this year lamented that she “couldn’t bear to live without the food noise.” One commenter responded in agreement: “I believe it is called ‘food music.’”

You don’t have to be a professional foodie to experience food music — or to rue its silence. A researcher whose work contributed to the development of what are called GLP-1 receptor agonists, like Ozempic, believes that the loss of food joy while on these drugs is not only a genuine loss but also a major reason patients tend to stop taking them. “What happens is that you lose your appetite and also the pleasure of eating,” and “there’s a price to be paid when you do that,” said Jens Juul Holst, a professor of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. For some people, “once you’ve been on this for a year or two,” he said, “life is so miserably boring that you can’t stand it any longer and you have to go back to your old life.” Or as a patient, Aishah Simone Smith, put it: “My life needs more pleasures, not fewer. Eating adds drama, fun, energy, to my otherwise listless and dysthymic experience. When I lost my longing for food, my life lost meaning.”

To be sure, some people who identify with the term “food noise” experience genuinely obsessive food thoughts, as well as engage in harmful behaviors such as bingeing. But according to experts such as nutritionists and psychologists, these problems are often rooted in restriction. In other words, food noise is what may happen when you’re not eating enough to satisfy your appetite, often under the pressures of diet culture — a culture to which drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy contribute, by normalizing restrictive eating and pathologizing hunger. (Of course, we can recognize the cultural pressures and practices as problematic while sympathizing with the individuals in the grip of them.)

There are implications for the wider culture in derogating our appetites. We are effectively telling people — again, especially women — not to trust their bodies in ways that smack of gaslighting. Imagine a world where we could override our need to sleep with a medication far more powerful and long-lasting than caffeine: a new class of amphetamines, say, that could suppress the need to sleep for days if not weeks. And so we come to pronounce ourselves afflicted with “sleep noise,” rather than simple human tiredness — thereby depicting normal bodily need as weakness and the drugs to treat such weariness as a solution to this non-problem. The idea of billing our body’s pleas for rest as mere noise — and hence as something that ought not be listened to — borders on dystopian. The case of hunger is no different.

25 Albums That Turned 25 in 2023

1998 was a year for new beginnings for many rock legends, and also one where some struggled to maintain their status.

Kiss made their first new album with the original lineup since 1979's Dynasty, continuing to capitalize on the reunion that had first begun on stage two years prior with a lucrative tour. But the credits didn't tell the true tale, as fans would learn in the following years that there were almost no moments where all four originals were actually in the same room for Psycho Circus.

It was more of a proper reunion when Jimmy Page and Robert Plant returned to the studio to make their first full album together of new and original material since their days together in Led Zeppelin.

R.E.M. weathered the loss of longtime drummer Bill Berry, yet when they finished making Up, they began to realize that the change had brought with it some positive reverberations.

Van Halen capped off an extremely tumultuous period which found them shifting from Sammy Hagar to David Lee Roth (briefly) and finally, Gary Cherone of Extreme. It was Cherone who drew the short straw for Van Halen III. While the combination seemed promising on paper, the California veterans received a different reaction than they might have been expecting. Which made the existence of Roth's DLR Band album (released earlier in the year) a welcome surprise.

Looking back, 1998 was a year of adventure for many classic rock artists. In our list of 25 Albums That Turned 25 in 2023, we look back chronologically at the journey that took place as they were released.

Some rockers enjoyed new beginnings, while others struggled to maintain their elite status.

In Memoriam: 2023 Deaths

The rock world said goodbye to several notable figures in 2023, including David CrosbyJeff Beck and Gary Rossington.

Music fans were stunned by the January death of guitar virtuoso Beck, who had completed a tour with Johnny Depp less than two months earlier.

The death of David Crosby during the same month also came as a shock to fans. The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash co-founder had been working on new solo music and preparing to tour again and had posted to social media just days before.

Rossington, who was the last founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, had dealt with multiple health issues in latest years, including emergency heart surgery.

A number of artists left surprisingly soon. Robbie Robertson of the Band died of an undisclosed "long illness," though he'd recently completed another score for a film by his friend and frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese. Sinead O'Connor died at the tragically young age of 56, about a year and a half after her son died of suicide. Shane MacGowan of the Pogues died at 65 following a battle with viral encephalitis.

Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie Presley, died suddenly and was mourned by many fellow fans and peers, including Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses and the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. Both appeared at her funeral, performing tracks from their respective catalog that had been some of Presley's favorites.

The namesake for the Marshall Tucker Band also died early in the year. Even though he wasn't a member of the group, he unknowingly helped launched their career.

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White, who played on many hits by the legendary R&B and pop group during his decade with them, also died. He carved out a long career that included work on key albums by Linda Ronstadt and Little Feat.

Motown songwriter Barrett Strong (who wrote the classic "Money," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and many of the Temptations' hits), Television's Tom Verlaine, Derek and the Dominos drummer Jim Gordon and Tom Leadon of Mudcrutch are also among the other losses. Read on for more information about the entertainers we've lost in 2023.

A look at those we've lost.

‘The Glory’ and ‘Hunger’ Win Category Honors at Asian Academy Creative Awards

The Korean-produced series “The Glory” won the best drama series award on Thursday at the Asian Academy Creative Awards Gala Final. Thai-produced TV movie “Hunger” was named best feature film.

The awards are organized by the Asian Academy of Creative Arts (AACA) a.k.a Asian Academy Creative Awards (AAA) and are held alongside the Asia Television Forum and Market (ATF) in Singapore. The AACA “was established to honor creative excellence and serve as a peer judged pinnacle of achievement in content creation, performance and media production.”

By the conclusion of the gala ceremony, Singapore, Japan and India had each claimed seven prize wins. Indian performers notably dominated the acting category with Rajshri Dashpande named best actress in a leading role for her performance in “Trial By Fire” and Vijay Varma named best actor in a leading role for his performance in “Dahaad” (Amazon Prime Video).

Analyzed by platform, Netflix was the evening’s winner with eight awards. Amazon’s Prime Video won five awards. Singapore public broadcaster Media Corp won four. Viu won three awards. Japan’s NHK won three awards. Disney+ came away empty-handed.

The Philippines received the inaugural ‘Asian Academy of Creative Arts Legacy Award’ from 2023 chairman Clement Schwebig (Warner Bros Discovery). In announcing Philippines’ ABS-CBN as the recipient, Schwebig said, “this award is presented to an organization that has demonstrated outstanding achievement, great innovation, or industry leadership, especially in the face of adversity. Our inaugural recipient embodies all of those attributes and then some.” ABS-CBN was previously The Philippines’ leading TV broadcaster, but lost its licenses after clashing with former president Duterte. The company has instead reinvented itself as a content studio.
