This project draws on research in chance-aided design, expanding the field of inquiry from the individual to the collective. It focuses on the complex cognitive and productive possibilities that emerge within a group of designers who welcome plurality and performance in their practice via the use of an architectural score. Scores use textual, pictorial or numeric notations to describe and structure a process that occurs over time. Whilst linear scores specify an ordered sequence of events, open scores are less-hierarchical and can allow participants to invent and adapt the units and relations of an ensemble temporally and spatially. What is the creative and social potential of the score in architectural practice and pedagogy? Through an examination of an architectural score and workshop that I developed for the Université du Québec à Montréal, named Lattice, and an exploration of the ideas underpinning it, I will show that one of the advantages of open scoring in architecture is the way in which it encourages both autonomy and collaboration, increasing the range of ideas, experiences and opportunities available to designers. The work invents and proposes a pedagogic method that grounds design on a condition of social experience and shared authorship. By foregrounding the process rather than the outcome in architectural design; by opening up this process to a social embodiment of time between actors, materials and tools; and by deliberately acknowledging its production within a collective, open scoring in architecture has the capacity to fundamentally change the ways in which architecture is taught and practiced as a social activity and understood as a social artefact.

Open Architecture Is the Innovation Differentiator

Strategically, it’s vital that businesses aren’t subjected to long-term vendor lock-in. Choosing a lakehouse architected with open standards and open formats eliminates that issue. People over 30 are cautious about not getting back into scenarios where, once a vendor has all your data, they turn the screws on you with maintenance bills and other contracted costs. What motivates the current crew and next generation of architects and engineers is that they know open architecture gives them the ability to use a wide range of new services and apps. That’s fundamentally better because it powers faster innovation in an increasingly cloud-native world.

Architecting with open standards and formats envisions a world where, to use a travel analogy, you don’t have to worry about adapters and converters to plug into power and services. At its best, open is about stripping away costs and complexity and getting everyone on the same page so they can innovate unimpeded. More businesses than ever leverage day-to-day transactions that have many concurrent users employing different engines and services for a wide range of purposes against the same data. It’s not easy to accommodate that efficiently with proprietary architectures. Frankly, arguments against open architecture are becoming passé. The same arguments used to be levied against the cloud itself and pretty much every technical innovation in the last 50 years.

Everyone likes to throw around the term “open” these days, so it’s important to closely consider version differences, community momentum, actual level of access, and thought leaders’ perspectives—while giving everything a good test run to experience how striking those differences really are.

Everyone Wants an Elegant Open Table Format—But the Metastore is Key

Recently, at Subsurface 2022, a significant number of major players vying for attention in the lakehouse space gave talks about support for Apache Iceberg, a popular, community-built table format for data lakes. Iceberg is an open-source project that is key to unlocking value with lakehouses because it makes any data lake files workable through table formats, without dealing with the risks of vendor lock-in.

But to bring genuine ease of use to lakehouses, an intelligent metastore for Iceberg is essential, with functions far beyond what a traditional metastore, like Hive, offers. Those functions, found in a free implementation like Arctic, a hosted version of the open source Nessie project, include automatic data optimization for Iceberg tables (e.g., compacting small files into larger ones, garbage collection, and repartitioning), reproducibility to train AI models with just a couple commands, referential integrity in joins, and logging of all changes to all tables (data and metadata) for better data governance.

Additionally and perhaps most importantly for users is offering a GitHub-like experience for data in the metastore. By bringing branches directly to the independent data tier (i.e., any data lake), users can sandbox experiments, test datasets, and merge successful tests into a main branch, without creating unmanaged copies of data. That supports the way people think about data and want to work with it in the real world—in multiple sessions with multiple users leveraging clean versioning, just as they do with application code. Arctic offers this innovation while working across all query engines, including Sonar, Flink, Presto and Spark. That is and should be the expectation for any lakehouse: to work with data as code.

Embracing Paradigm Shifts Is Non-Negotiable

Open lakehouse architecture signals the direction of a much larger data paradigm shift. Major innovation is always criticized as a fairytale, counter to running a business efficiently. Vendors unprepared for the future will protest: “But you’ve got a business to consider, and I can get you up and running in a day. What do you care more about anyway, your business or saying you have an open architecture? Are you Apple? Do you have 6000 PhD engineers working for you?” Of course, arguments like this present a false dichotomy.

Consider the major paradigm shifts of the past several decades. With the mainframe to client-server shift, we heard old mainframers at that time criticize the upstart relational databases as toys, unreliable and full of bugs, with terrible performance compared to the mainframe. The advent of web apps on the internet suffered similar criticism—dot coms are built with such immature technology, posing so many security risks! The web ecosystem won’t support real work the way meaty client-server applications do. Then, along came mobile. Its critics initially cited differences with the rich, web browser capabilities on a desktop. And, of course, the shift from on-premises, monolithic client-server designs to API-connected microservices across cloud, hybrid and distributed ecosystems is in full swing, but was met with all the same criticisms.

The truth is that no new paradigms are adopted wholesale and overnight. Use-case experimentation is always the starting point. Enterprises don’t turn off their current systems. They start building or adding adaptations where they make the most sense. Nobody should feel this is an either/or proposition, but everyone should feel the urgency to, at a minimum, understand the approaching paradigm shift to open data infrastructure models, like open lakehouses.

While all paradigm shifts are hard initially, the yield isn’t just a replacement technology; it’s a different experience offering different capabilities. Company leaders—CEOs, CTOs, CIOs and Boards—are tasked with putting their fingers on the pulse of the future to identify where the trends are moving. Leaders only focused on where the puck is today, not where it will be in 1, 2, 5 and 10 years, will lose their market position or never gain one in the first place.

OPEN Architecture: The Latest Architecture and News

More than 80,000 votes were cast over the last two weeks and, after careful review, the results of the 2019 ArchDaily Building of the Year Awards presented by Unreal are in. Building of the Year, which itself celebrated ten years this year, is the largest peer-based crowdsourced architecture award in the world, showcasing the projects chosen by you, our readers, as the most significant of the year.

This is no mean feat. More than 4000 projects were in contention this year, challenging readers to carefully consider a wide variety of projects across type, scale, and location. 4000 projects were whittled to 75 finalists; 75 have now been reduced to the 15 winners - one for each typological category.

The results are as diverse as the architecture itself. Well-known names are, as in years past, present among the bunch, among them Zaha Hadid Architects, MVRDV, and Heatherwick Studio. For London-based Heatherwick, their win marks the second consecutive year they have taken top honors for a refurbishment-based project. But less-renowned names dominate the ranks of the winners this year. Innocad’s serenely simple office building for a real estate company elevates what corporate architecture can be while the technical and material mastery of Sameep Padora’s Maya Somaiya Library is enough to make any architect look twice. The library is, in fact, one of two Indian projects to take top honors this year - a strong first year showing for the nation whose design talent seems finally to be coming to the fore.

But for all their many beautiful differences, the winners share a crucial element in common: they represent the values of our mission, to bring inspiration, knowledge, and tools to architects everywhere. Building of the Year - indeed, ArchDaily itself - would not be possible without the generosity of firms and readers as invested in our mission as we are. We supply our profound thanks to all who participated this year, no matter the form. Congratulations to all the winners!

Six-mark questions are extended open response questions. These require longer answers than the structured questions. It is wise to plan your answer rather than rushing straight into it, otherwise you may stray away from the key points.

To gain full marks, you need to:

Six-mark questions often use these command words:

Six-mark questions may be synoptic questions. These questions bring together ideas from two or more topics. For example, a question about fertilisers could include ideas about covalent substances, acids and alkalis, chemical calculations, and effects on the environment.

The answers shown here supply marking points as bullet points. You do not usually need to include all of them to gain six marks, but you do need to write in full sentences, linking them logically and clearly.

B. An organization map can be impacted by a business model change.
C. An organization map reduces the time, cost, and risk of business operations.
D. An organization map is limited to formal relationships between business units.
Answer: A
Explanation:
An organization map is a technique that can be used to show how a business architecture addresses stakeholder
concerns across different parts of an organization3. It can highlight gaps or overlaps in the coverage of stakeholder
concerns by a business architecture. An organization chart, on the other hand, is a diagram that shows the formal

example, A represents roles and C represents information.
Question: 160
Which of the following best describes a TOGAF business scenario?
A. A business case.
B. A technique to elaborate an architecture effort.
C. A method to develop a business model.
D. A use-case providing detailed descriptions.
Answer: B
Explanation:
A TOGAF business scenario is a technique that can be used to fully understand the requirements of information
technology and align it with business needs1. It is not a business case, which is a document that provides justification
for a proposed project or initiative6. It is not a method to develop a business model, which is a description of how an
organization creates, delivers, and captures value for its stakeholders7. It is not a use-case, which is a description of
how a system interacts with external actors to achieve a specific goal.
Question: 161
Consider the following:
In Phase A a business capability map and a core set of value streams were created while developing the Architecture
Vision.
Why would such Architecture Descriptions need to be updated in Phase B?
A. Phase B requires that all Architecture Descriptions be updated.
B. The development of Business Architecture Descriptions is always iterative.
C. Phase B is an ADM Architecture Development phase.
D. A new value stream was assessed as in the project scope.
Answer: B
Explanation:
The development of Business Architecture Descriptions is always iterative because it involves constant refinement and
validation of the architecture models and views based on stakeholder feedback and changing requirements. Therefore,
any Architecture Description that was created in Phase A may need to be updated in Phase B as new information or
insights emerge. Phase B does not require that all Architecture Descriptions be updated, only those that are relevant
and necessary for the Business Architecture. Phase B is an ADM Architecture Development phase, but that does not
explain why Architecture Descriptions need to be updated. A new value stream may or may not require updating
$13$10
existing Architecture Descriptions depending on its scope and impact.
Question: 162

Sample Entrance Exam

Word Police exams consist of questions similar to the ones below. Here beneath each question we've told you which answer is correct, and explained why.

When you are taking an actual exam, once you've answered all five questions, press the "Submit answers" button to have your responses scored. If you're not sure of the answer to any question, why not take your best guess? (No points are deducted for wrong answers.) You'll need to get at least four answers right to be allowed to proceed. On the next page, you will be asked a final question that you must answer correctly in order to pass the exam.

The actual exams provide a clue about the intent of the questions that isn't available here -- namely, that each of them is the test for a particular squad or division. The questions on the entrance test for any given squad will have to do with that squad's specialty. So, for example, on the entrance test for the Number Unit, the focus of the questions will tend to be grammatical number (say, "the Word Police is ..." or "the Word Police are ..."?).

1. When Word Police officers perform their duties properly, fewer/less crimes against the language occur.

Fewer
Less
Whatever

Fewer is for things that can be counted ("one crime, two crimes ..."; "The fewer crimes the better"). Less is for things that pile up as amounts, not numbers of items, and aren't countable ("There hasn't been much criminal activity lately"; "There's been less criminal activity than usual"). Because crimes falls into the former class of things, fewer is the only correct choice here. (See pages 191-192 in Word Court.)

2. While on duty, you see your neighbor Mr. Smith discarding a candy wrapper on the sidewalk. You pick it up, say in your most cheerful tone, "You dropped something. Here you are!" and hand it back to him. Afterward, should you keep the matter between you and him, between he and the Word Police Force, or between you and he?

Between you and him
Between he and the Word Police Force
Between you and he

Any pronoun that comes after between ought to be one that can be used as a grammatical object (as in "The Word Police want us"), not one that is used as a subject (for example, "We want to join the Word Police"). He is a subjective pronoun, so neither the second nor the third answer can be correct. You can be either kind of pronoun, and him is objective, so "between you and him" is the right answer. (See pages 130-134 in Word Court.)

3. Which is correct?

"It's a dull officer who spends all their time shining their badge."
"It's a dull officer who spends all her time shining her badge."
"It's a dull officer that spends all its time shining its badge."

An officer can't be plural. Nor is an officer neuter (its). An officer certainly can be female, though, so "... spends all her time ..." is fine. The second answer is the correct one. (See pages 28-32 in Word Court.)

4. With which statement do you agree?

"A Word Police officer must see that poetic justice is done everyday."
"A Word Police officer can't concern himself with poetic justice on an every day basis."
"A Word Police officer must at least try to see that poetic justice is done every day."

Once again, the real issue here is which of these statements is worded correctly. See those variations of everyday? Everyday, one word, is an adjective, and so when that's the form used, it's supposed to be modifying a noun. Every day is an adverb or a noun phrase. In the first answer, the adjective everyday is being used as if it were an adverb, modifying a verb; and in the second one, the adverb every day is being used as if it were an adjective, modifying a noun. Only in the third answer does the adverbial form match an adverbial function; this answer is correct. (See pages 190-191 in Word Court.)

5. Is this alright?

Yes
No

Alright is a very informal spelling. Standard English calls for all right. So no, it's not all right, thank you very much. No, indeed. (See page 153 in Word Court.)
