And of the 1,260 bicyclist deaths in 2020, 806 died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, compared to 454 in other non-traffic incidents. These rates typically peak during the summer.

The good news is that careful riding and an awareness of common accident risks can help you stay safe while biking. Here are a few of the most common causes of bike accidents and safety tips that can help prevent accidents.

Common causes of bicycle accidents

There are many outside factors that cause accidents. Being aware of them can help you take a proactive approach to avoid potential dangers on the road.

Distracted and reckless drivers

The leading cause of all vehicle collisions for cars and bikes alike is distracted driving on the part of an automobile driver, including texting, talking, or using social media.

When drivers pay attention to their phones instead of their surroundings, they are significantly more likely to cause dangerous collisions. According to a study by the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the number of cyclists killed by distracted drivers went up by 30% from 2005 to 2010.

Another factor that significantly increases the likelihood of an accident is alcohol involvement. Alcohol use, either by the motorist or the biker, was reported in 34% of all fatal cyclist crashes in 2019. Driving and riding under the influence is unsafe, and in most states, biking while drunk is unlawful.

As a cyclist, it’s critical to keep an eye on drivers, paying special attention to those who are driving erratically or distractedly to avoid accidents.

Dooring accidents and sideswipes

Getting “doored” is when a cyclist runs into a car door that is suddenly opened onto the bike path or into the bike lane. Bicyclists frequently have to ride closer to parked cars on congested streets with more traffic, making this type of accident common in urban areas. It’s the responsibility of drivers to make sure that they check and see that no bicycle or vehicle is coming before exiting their cars. When it comes to accidents involving a bike and a vehicle, it can be common to assume that the vehicle driver is at fault—but this isn’t always the case. Many bicycle accidents involve riders who:

There are differences in the cycling laws across the states, but there are a few general rules applicable wherever within the USA. Following these rules is crucial to avoiding fatal bike accidents:

  • Cyclists must ride on the right-hand side of the roadway—remember, “ride right”—never ride your bike against the traffic flow.

  • If a lane is wide enough to share with another vehicle, ride to the right of traffic. If the lane is not wide enough to share, cyclists are entitled to “take the lane” by riding in the middle.

  • The slowest vehicles on the road should be the furthest to the right. Where you position yourself on the road depends on the location of any parked cars, your speed, and your destination.

  • Always pass on the left.

  • At intersections, when there is a lane used for more than one direction, use the rightmost lane going in the direction you are traveling.

WASHINGTON — Seeking to bolster its development of uncrewed vehicles, the Army is using a separate acquisition pathway for software, paving the way for future coordination among platforms of all sizes.

The Army includes combat vehicle modernization as a top priority. The service has looked to develop three types of robotic vehicles — light, medium and heavy — to use as “scouts” or “escorts” for crewed fighting vehicles.

Both the light and medium versions of the vehicle are undergoing testing at Fort Hood, Texas. However, earlier this year, the service said it would defer its medium-size vehicle program, choosing to first focus on smaller platforms.

As it looks toward light vehicles, the Army will pay special attention to the acquisition pathway the service is using for the vehicles’ software, Doug Bush, the assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology, told reporters Wednesday.

“From an acquisition standpoint, we’re focused on ... the software, which will be critical for all ground robotic programs going forward,” Bush said. “Getting that right early is going to be essential.”

By developing the software separately from the vehicles themselves, the same software could be used across multiple platforms, potentially improving coordination and communication among vehicles.

The software acquisition pathway for the program will focus on embedded software development and sustainment activities, such as autonomy software, control station software and payload control software, according to the Army’s fiscal 2023 budget justification documents.

The pathway will also incorporate feedback from soldiers and other integrators into product roadmaps.

Bush said that while the Army is still broadly interested in robots of many sizes, the service is focusing on light vehicles because it sees that as a necessary first step.

In 2020, the Army selected QinetiQ North America to produce light-vehicle prototypes and Textron to build medium versions.

According to budget justification documents, in FY23, the Army will launch a competition for new light vehicles. Over the next five years, the service plans to spend nearly $750 million on developing light vehicles and the software acquisition pathway.

The agriculture, construction and commercial harbor craft sectors have the opportunity to receive funds from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to purchase vehicles that will help their fleets reduce emissions and become more sustainable.

The project is administered by CALSTART and has $125 million in funding available, more than double the amount allocated to the project when it first launched in January 2020. Originally only for freight, in 2022, CORE is expanding to include funding for the commercial harbor craft and agriculture and construction sectors.

Qualified participants will receive vouchers for point-of-sale discounts on off-road, zero-emission equipment, up to a maximum of $500,000 per voucher. There is no requirement to “scrap,” sell, or retire existing equipment, and additional funding may be available for charging/refueling infrastructure, equipment operated in disadvantaged communities, and small businesses.

CORE supports the following nine equipment categories:

  • On- and off-road terminal tractors
  • Mobile power units (MPUs) and mobile shore-power cable management systems
  • Truck- and trailer-mounted transport refrigeration units (TRUs)
  • Construction equipment
  • Large forklifts and cargo-handling equipment
  • Agricultural equipment
  • Airport ground-support equipment
  • Commercial harbor craft
  • Railcar movers and switcher locomotives

The first round of CORE resulted in over 460 vouchers for vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment totaling over $62 million, with terminal tractors being the most requested equipment type. 

“The streamlined process incorporates feedback from program participants and we are anticipating significant interest in this second round,” said Niki Okuk, deputy director at CALSTART.  “The industry is continuing its transition to zero-emissions and CORE provides a clear market signal that helps bring new products to the market.”

Another project that will help the agriculture sector reduce emissions includes Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announcing in February that his department will invest $1 billion in partnerships to support America’s sustainable farmers, ranchers and forest landowners.

The initiative will provide both financial and technical assistance to pilot projects lasting between one and five years for US agricultural and forestry products that use sustainable practices. Recipients are expected to demonstrate products’ greenhouse gas benefits through “innovative, cost-effective” means of measurement and verification and market the “climate-smart” commodities post-development.

Nearly 8 in 10 car buyers signed up for a free trial of their vehicle’s connected services when it was offered by a dealer, and nearly half converted to a paid subscription when their free trial ended, according to a LexisNexis Risk Solutions survey published Tuesday.

Yet activation rates are low, because most dealers don’t make buyers aware of the services or offer them an opportunity to enroll, LexisNexis concluded in the survey, “The Driver’s Mindset: Connectivity and Connectedness.”

Sixty-six percent of survey respondents said they were not aware of connected services before buying or leasing their new or used connected car, and 57% said they were not offered a connected services free trial at the dealership.

Among those not offered a free trial at the dealership, 71% indicated they would have been very or somewhat interested in enrolling if it had been offered.

The survey of more than 2,000 U.S. vehicle owners who had bought or leased a new or used car, model year 2017 or newer, was conducted in November 2021. The objective was “to uncover and map potential opportunities to enhance the customer experience throughout the stages of vehicle ownership, so that we can provide insights and support automakers as they continue to develop and execute their connectivity strategies.”

Overall, the study found that U.S. consumers want to hear from OEMs about connected services, as well as safety recalls, warranties, insurance discounts, and other benefits offered through such services.

“Our study shows that automakers are at a confluence. While automakers face increasing competitive pressure to offer the best vehicle ownership experience, and connectivity is mainstream in many aspects of consumers’ lives, there still seems to be lower consumer activation and conversion rates within connectivity programs, despite the benefits,” Dave Nemtuda, head of OEM product, U.S. connected car, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, said in a statement. “The automotive industry can take action on these insights to Strengthen the customer experience, educate consumers on the benefits of connected services and help achieve connectivity-related business objectives.”

Among those who chose not to sign up for a connected services free trial when offered the chance, data privacy concerns do not appear to have been much of a factor. Just 12% cited “required info I didn’t want to provide/personal info,” while 63% said they didn’t see the value in the services. Also cited were “suspicious of free trials,” 40%; “too difficult/time-consuming to enroll,” 21%; “fatigued from process/wanted to be done,” 20%, and “didn’t understand how the services work,” 7%.

LexisNexis suggested that the opt-out rate could be lowered if dealers were to show buyers how connected services provide features that they value. Among those are the ability for a car to be located, unlocked, or started; roadside assistance; vehicle diagnostics; and eligibility for over-the-air updates (OTA) for a variety of services, including feature upgrades and security patches related to advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). “[C]onnected cars can detect and transmit diagnostic and operational data from the vehicle systems and request OTA updates, when necessary, which can help reduce the occurrence of catastrophic or safety-related events,” the survey said.

“Consumers are telling us they are open to the engagement that connectivity provides and, in many cases, they expect it,” said Greg Ross, connected car practice lead, for automotive consulting group Motormindz.

Connected services are even less likely to be activated on a used car. LexisNexis found that 83% of used connected car owners “remain untapped and serve as potential connected services clients…. Moreover, opportunities in the used car parc will continue to grow and eventually will exceed the ones in new cars, since the annual turnover of connected vehicles is much higher than the sales of brand-new connected cars.”

Among used-car buyers, “Nearly everyone (92%), expected to be contacted about safety recall notices, with warranty coverage coming in second, selected by 80% of respondents,” LexisNexis said.

The survey also found that two-thirds of consumers know that their vehicle’s telematics can be used for insurance discounts, but less than a quarter have actually enrolled in such programs. It suggested that enrollments could be increased through greater education.

Among the recommendations of the survey is that dealers protect themselves and their customers from fraud by using identity authentication tools “to check whether the person and the information you are receiving are real. Identity verification and authentication tools let you quickly and safely onboard new customers giving them continual, seamless access to their personalized services. As the value of your services and the number of ways you interact with your customers increase, the risk of fraud increases, too.”

Privacy concerns raised

Even as OEMs are encouraged to enroll their customers in connected services, a consumer group is arguing that government must act to protect drivers’ privacy while in their vehicles.

“Personal car data is the new gold rush of the auto industry. Cars collect more data than our phones. Consumers deserve privacy in their vehicles, and California must lead the way on that issue,” Justin Kloczuko, of the nonprofit Consumer Watchdog, wrote in a July 23 commentary in The Mercury News under the headline, “California must put privacy before automakers’ profits.”

Kloczuko noted media reports that some consumers’ information, such as their vehicle’s location, is being sold to companies that conduct targeted advertising. For instance, “Starbucks tracks your geolocation, so it can know the best time to flash you with a coupon and divert you to the drive-through. This amounts to what is known as ‘behavioral modification.’”

“While location data can be turned off on your cell phone, there’s not yet an opt-out feature for your car,” he said. “One safeguard is ensuring people can protect their privacy and geolocation from intrusive activity.”

Kloczuko encouraged readers to comment on draft regulations written by the California Privacy Protection Agency in response to the passage of Proposition 24, the California Privacy Rights Act. The board convenes for public hearings on Aug. 24 and 25.

With electric car sales soaring, concerns have been raised about the safety of charge points installed at homes, offices and on streets across the country.

There is a lack of appropriate training when it comes to fitting and maintaining electric vehicle chargers which could have 'disastrous consequences,' a report from City & Guilds claims.

In a survey of 500 UK electricians, it found that 99 per cent understood there to be major risks associated with working on charging points. 

Despite the danger, only 28 per cent said they have undertaken specific training for them.

The qualifications awarding body found that three quarters of electricians believe they will likely seek work in installing or repairing EV charge points in the next 12 months as a result of the growth in zero-emission cars on the road ahead of the 2030 ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars.

This 'demonstrates a clear risk' unless companies ensure their workforce have the necessary training, skills, knowledge and experience to safety fit, repair and maintain EV charge points.

City & Guilds says its research supports findings from a leaked audit report published last June which found that a fifth (18 per cent) of installations through the Government's now-closed Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) between 2020 and 2021 had dangerous or potentially dangerous issues.

This includes examples of poor wiring during installation and deficiencies with the specific Residual Current Devices in chargers that are designed to reduce the risk of causing electric shocks.

The leaked report compiled for the Department for Transport by the Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Technologies in collaboration with the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles said that just a third (32 per cent) of the 371 installations audited were completed to a satisfactory level.

David Phillips, managing director at City & Guilds, said the speed at which the EV transition is taking place is set to place huge pressure on electricians to fit and fix devices.

Electric car sales are already 58 per cent higher in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2021, according to the latest industry figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). 

Some 115,250 EVs have been registered since January, which accounts almost 15 per cent of all new cars purchased so far this year.

'With the government setting a new target to increase the number of electric car chargers ten-fold to 300,000 by 2030, electricians will need to rapidly upskill to safely manage the workload – but currently the training just isn’t available nationally and there isn’t an impetus to undertake it,' Phillips said. 

'We need industry to recognise this safety issue and ensure these EV charging points are installed in a way that is standardised and safe, to avoid a potential disaster in the near future.'

As well as safety concerns regarding the installation of charging points, the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) for years has raised issue with the likely shortfall of qualified mechanics to work on the electric cars themselves towards the end of the decade.

The wider switch to vehicles powered by batteries and electric motors will be particularly significant for independent garage operators, with its workforce of technicians required to almost entirely relearn the trade and take on fresh training to earn qualifications.

'Based on SMMT EV sales forecasts, the shortfall between EVs on the UK’s roads and approved technicians is now likely to be felt 24 months later than we were predicting last year [2026]. 

'What’s more, early indications are that figures for Quarter 2 will set another new record, which is great news for the industry and for the increasing number of EV drivers.'

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that over half a million fully-electric cars have now been sold in the UK.

The green milestone comes in the wake of the government ending grants towards both the purchase of an electric car [the Plug-in Car Grant] and the installation costs of a home charging point (EVHS).

As COVID-19 has led to supply chain issues and labor shortages, Americans have seen the price of cars both new and used skyrocket to new heights. Used car prices are currently 43 percent higher than projected levels without COVID interference, leading consumers to pay $10,046 more per used vehicle than anticipated. The average price for a new vehicle reached $48,043 in June, marking the highest average for a new car in history. With inventory shrinking, many dealers have seized the opportunity to charge above sticker price and tack on hidden fees. This trend may be changing, however, as lawsuits and proposed Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations attempt to curb the allegedly “dishonest” actions.


In May of 2021, a class action accusing General Motors (GM) of deceptive trade practices through its “destination charge” was filed in the Southern District of California. In Romoff v. Gen. Motors LLC, No. 21-CV-00938-WQH-BGS, 2021 WL 5741455 (S.D. Cal. Dec. 2, 2021)the plaintiffs alleged that GM violated California and New Jersey law by using the destination fees as a vehicle for profit, rather than a true reflection of the cost to deliver vehicles to customers. The district court in Romoff dismissed the case on January 19, 2022, stating that reasonable consumers would understand that profit is included in a destination fee, and the plaintiffs have since appealed to the Ninth Circuit. Although the success or failure of this appeal is unknown, it could deliver us a glimpse into a future with more litigation in response to ever-increasing add-on fees.

In April of 2022, the Maryland Attorney General reached a settlement with Koons Kia in which the dealership will be required to pay back $1 million to consumers for purported false advertising. Koons’s allegedly deceptive practices included tacking on extra fees to the purchase of a vehicle by labeling them “freight charges” without including the charges in their advertised prices. The Maryland AG pursued these claims as a violation of the Consumer Protection Act, and may tee up similar claims across the United States by other state AG offices.

FTC Regulation

This litigation comes at a time when the FTC has begun to crack down on dealerships engaging in deceptive pricing schemes at the expense of the consumer. Just before the Koons settlement, the FTC and the State of Illinois took action against Ed Napleton Automotive Group, slapping them with a $10 million fine in response to the multistate dealership company applying illegal “junk fees” to customer’s bills and discriminating against black consumers Illegal actions taken by Napleton include hiding fees to unwanted add-ons in lengthy contracts without customers’ consent, lying to consumers about fees being mandatory or the add-ons being free, and charging black customers $190 more in interest and $99 more in add-ons than non-white customers. The unanimous FTC decision allocated $9.95 million of the $10 million dollar settlement to be used to provide monetary relief to affected consumers, and also required Napleton to establish a comprehensive fair lending program.

In the wake of the Napleton settlement, the FTC also recently proposed new rules to further protect consumers from an auto market perceived as predatory. 16 CFR Part 463, titled the Motor Vehicle Dealers Trade Regulation Rule would prohibit dealers from making “bait and switch” claims that lure in prospective buyers with deceptive advertisements, ban junk fraudulent fees for add-on products that do not provide a benefit to the customer, ban charging add-on fees without informing the consumer of the base price of the vehicle and receiving their express written consent, and require a full disclosure of the true offering price that the consumer would pay, as well as any optional add-ons and financing disclosures.

After a tumultuous two years in the automotive industry, experts project that the market will begin to stabilize in the coming months. However, that stabilization may not quell litigation from the FTC, state governments, and consumers who were overcharged since the vehicle inventory shortage began.

A senior official overseeing the mission, told TOI: “We’ll take the vehicle to around 11km approximately and then from there, the crew module will go up to about 15-16km and then it will come down. We’ll demonstrate the coming down, descent phase, parachute deployment and recovery.”
Another scientist explained that at the altitude of about 11km — the final mission profile will be made public at a later stage — the crew module will separate from the vehicle, escape from the trajectory of the vehicle, and then drop back.
“...The ground team at Sriharikota will do the tracking. Once separated/ejected from the TV, the CM will have a free fall. Essentially, we’ll be demonstrating the crew escape system in an in-flight abort scenario. This means navigation and guidance, control systems and parachutes will be demonstrated. A success in this will deliver us the confidence to expedite a lot of other processes,” the scientist said.
As reported earlier by TOI, Isro has already conducted multiple parachute tests ahead of integrated air-drop tests. The scientist added that all the packages — like avionics, telemetry and telecommand, navigation, control systems, etc — of the crew module are available and ready. “...We are looking at integration next month, following which there will be extensive testing before the TV-TD1,” he added.
Stating that even the test vehicle parts have come and integration will be done in the coming weeks, the scientist said: “Since most of the hardware is standardised, we do not anticipate any problems. The motors and other systems have already been tested individually.”

The four astronaut-elects, the official said, were continuing training and are expected to start simulation training soon. “We’ve developed three types of simulators that will help them (astronauts) get familiar with the cockpit, crew module controls, mission profiles and experiences, etc. They will also have simulations for manual intervention if any. Aside from this, there are other simulators on the anvil depending on the progress,” the official added.
In TV-T1, Isro will intentionally cause an anomaly and allow the crew module to come out of the TV, do the tumbling manoeuvres, deploy parachutes, and land in a designated spot on the sea before being recovered.
Aside from this there are different events such as maximum dynamic pressure condition, maximum acceleration condition, some transient condition etc, in which abort will become critical in flight. In all, Isro has realised four such special test vehicles, two missions of which will happen this year.
The initial target for the second abort test was December. The scientist said: “As things stand, we should be able to achieve that. However, things may change depending on the performance during TV-TD1,” he added.
