https://killexams.com/exam_list/VmwareVMware discloses critical VCD Appliance auth bypass with no patch
VMware disclosed a critical and unpatched authentication bypass vulnerability affecting Cloud Director appliance deployments.
Cloud Director enables VMware admins to manage their organizations' cloud services as part of Virtual Data Centers (VDC).
The auth bypass security flaw only affects appliances running VCD Appliance 10.5 that were previously upgraded from an older release. The company also added that CVE-2023-34060 does not impact fresh VCD Appliance 10.5 installs, Linux deployments, and other appliances.
Unauthenticated attackers can remotely exploit the bug in low-complexity attacks that don't require user interaction.
"On an upgraded version of VMware Cloud Director Appliance 10.5, a malicious actor with network access to the appliance can bypass login restrictions when authenticating on port 22 (ssh) or port 5480 (appliance management console)," VMware explains.
"This bypass is not present on port 443 (VCD provider and tenant login). On a new installation of VMware Cloud Director Appliance 10.5, the bypass is not present."
While VMware doesn't have a patch for this critical authentication bypass, the company provided admins with a temporary workaround until security updates are released.
"VMware released VMware Security Advisory VMSA-2023-0026 to help customers understand the issue and which upgrade path will fix it," VMware says in a separate advisory.
The workaround shared by VMware will only work for affected versions of VCD Appliance 10.5.0, and it requires downloading a custom script attached to this knowledgebase article and running it on cells exposed to the CVE-2023-34060 vulnerability.
According to VMware, the workaround does not cause any functional disruptions, and downtime is not a concern as neither a service restart nor a reboot is necessary.
In June, the company also fixed an ESXi zero-day used by Chinese state hackers for data theft and alerted customers to an actively exploited critical bug in the Aria Operations for Networks analytics tool.
More recently, in October, it patched a critical vCenter Server flaw (CVE-2023-34048) that can be exploited for remote code execution attacks.

VMware Inc. is convening its annual Explore conference in Barcelona this week with a huge batch of product and partnership announcements aimed at strengthening its Cloud Foundation hyperconverged infrastructure with improved data services and security as well as advancing its Tanzu application development and modernization platform.
The virtualization firm, whose acquisition by Broadcom Inc. from Dell Technologies Inc. is expected to close soon, will introduce version 2.0 of VMware Data Services Manager. It’s calling a significant evolution in the accessibility and management of data services across VMware Cloud Foundation. This upgrade is intended to simplify and streamline operations for information technology administrators, data certified and developers.
The VMware Data Services Manager gives IT administrators policy-based native infrastructure management while data teams and database administrators retain autonomy over data policies. The first two strategic partnerships for Data Services Manager are support for Google LLC’s AlloyDB Omni offering on the Google Cloud Platform and MinIO Inc.’s Object Store. AlloyDB Omni is a PostgreSQL-compatible database service that Google has modified for improved performance. MinIO offers an object storage platform tailored for data lakes and artificial intelligence and machine learning applications.
The Data Services Manager strategy “provides a unified control plane to manage data and services,” said Prashanth Shenoy, vice president of cloud platform, infrastructure and solutions marketing. “This is critical for modern applications like artificial intelligence workloads and data-intensive applications.”
Advanced ransomware protection
VMware is also addressing the growing sophistication of ransomware with new services aimed at detection and recovery. A technology preview of Intelligent Threat Detection uses AI for advanced detection of the encryption ransomware typically executes on the PCs and servers it strikes. VMware Live Recovery improves cybersecurity and data recovery within VMware Cloud by unifying ransomware response and disaster recovery across multiple private and public clouds.
The company is also continuing to refine Cloud Foundation with several advancements being announced today. They include bolstering networking and security through support for the vSphere Distributed Services Engine, which offloads certain infrastructure functions to data processing units for data center modernization.
DPUs are specialized processors that offload and accelerate the processing of data-centric tasks that were traditionally handled by central processing units. The company is also adding support for nonvolatile memory express storage platforms with vSAN Express Storage Architecture. VMware Aria Operations, a cloud management portfolio, is also getting updates that help operators understand sustainability posture across data center footprints and group alerts to reduce alert storms.
The new suite of VMware offerings, including the Data Services Manager and VMware Live Recovery, as well as updates to VMware Aria Operations and VMware Cloud Foundation, is anticipated to be released in VMware’s fiscal fourth quarter, which ends in February.
Clouds for regulated industries
The Sovereign Cloud initiative VMware announced two years ago is being enhanced with new services and developer features. VMware said more than 50 Sovereign Cloud providers across 33 countries are now part of its ecosystem. Sovereign Cloud providers pledge to adhere to a set of principles and technical requirements that ensure compliance with the data sovereignty regulations of their jurisdictions.
VMware is enhancing security for Sovereign Cloud users by enabling them to maintain control over their data encryption keys. The “bring your own keys” and “bring your own key management systems” features are meant to ensure that data is inaccessible without proper authorization. Key ownership is supported by Thales SA’s CipherTrust and VMware Cloud Director.
Expanding its data services for Sovereign Clouds, VMware is also integrating NoSQL, Apache Kafka and Greenplum as database services, along with NetApp Inc.’s StorageGrid for object storage-as-a-service. These additions are meant to Boost scalability, security and compliance in highly regulated industries, VMware said. They cover a wide range of operations, from real-time analytics in sensitive sectors to large-scale data analytics while adhering to data residency requirements.
The framework is based on a set of 20 control points ranging from data independence to interoperability, security, compliance and jurisdiction control. “Sovereign Cloud customers want the availability of all cloud services, no price premiums, no vendor lock-in and, most importantly, access to an open ecosystem of services,” said Rajeev Bhardwaj, vice president of cloud service providers at VMware.
Enhancements to VMware Cloud Director include support for Nvidia Corp. graphics processing units to enable Sovereign Cloud customers to build AI, deep learning and graphic-intensive applications. An extensive library of AI applications is available through the Nvidia Global Connect marketplace.
Addressing action at the edge
To address the growing number of edge use cases, VMware is announcing a host of new products and partnerships based on its Edge Compute Stack and aimed at simplifying operations, increasing security and modernizing edge environments.
VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator now includes new telemetry features that are said to facilitate better insights into how workloads perform, allow for quick identification of devices and speed up problem resolution by providing contextual data.
Intelligent Assist is intended to simplify the operational experience by applying generative AI to aid in managing workloads, edge devices and users.
An expanded partnership with Microsoft Corp. will integrate Microsoft Security Copilot into VMware’s edge platform. The AI-based tool can be used to detect and respond to security threats and supply VMware secure access service edge customers shared insights into perimeter security events. Efforts to integrate with Symantec Corp.’s Cloud Secure Web Gateway are also underway as part of a VMware strategy to provide a single-vendor portfolio of networking and security features.
Developer treats
In the application development arena, enhancements to the Tanzu cloud-native application platform now allow for rapid application deployment with more stringent data flow and security controls. The self-managed version of Tanzu Mission Control, which is a centralized hub for multicloud, multicluster Kubernetes management, is now generally available. It offers cloud service providers the ability to deliver compliant Kubernetes infrastructure-as-a-service. Additionally, VMware Content Hub for Cloud Director simplifies access to cloud resources for secure and compliant applications.
The company is announcing updates to its Spring development framework along with improvements to the Tanzu Application Platform, Tanzu Data Solutions and Tanzu Intelligence Services that are aimed at helping development teams create and manage high-performance applications more efficiently and securely.
Spring, a 20-year-old Java development framework, now includes Spring Boot 3.2 and Spring Framework 6.1, which are tools for creating more scalable and efficient applications using GraalVM native images and Java 21 virtual threads. Spring AI, an experimental project, aims to streamline the integration of AI capabilities into the development process, while a new vulnerability assessment tool is being introduced to assist organizations in managing security risks and compliance. Integration of VMware Spring Runtime, which provides support for Spring applications, and Tanzu Application Service 5.0 is aimed at improving the developer experience with new database and AI service tiles and extending cloud compatibility with support for Oracle Corp.’s Cloud.
The Tanzu Application Platform now includes DevOps Research and Assessment metrics, which are used to assess the performance and capabilities of software development teams.
Tanzu Data Services are being enhanced to integrate machine learning and AI capabilities and simplify data management across cloud environments. Additions include Tanzu Greenplum’s automated machine learning agent, the Tanzu GemFire Vector DB Extension for low-latency querying and Tanzu RabbitMQ 1.6 for high-throughput messaging in resource-constrained environments such as edge applications. A new Tanzu Data Hub is also in a technology preview to unify the management of Tanzu and ecosystem data services.
Tanzu Intelligence Services, which provides insights into the cost, performance and security of applications and cloud environments, is getting new features to support cloud sustainability efforts. This includes GreenOps support in Tanzu CloudHealth for monitoring power consumption and emissions, Tanzu Guardrails for proactive governance and compliance and a revamped Tanzu Hub user interface with integrated tools for cost management, observability, migration planning, and troubleshooting.
AI alliance with IBM
VMware also said it’s teaming up with IBM Corp. to facilitate the adoption of generative AI in enterprises by making IBM’s watsonx AI development environment available on-premises through VMware Private AI and IBM/Red Hat OpenShift platforms. The partnership is intended to help businesses use generative AI to build applications for common use cases such as content creation, IT automation and customer service by bringing AI closer to where data is generated and used.
A core aspect of this partnership is what VMware called Private AI, which is an architectural strategy that leverages AI’s benefits for the purposes of privacy and compliance. Integrating VMware Cloud Foundation with OpenShift and watsonx allows users to deploy generative AI in their operational environments, including on-premises infrastructure, VMware said. They can run generative AI models within their private cloud as well as in hybrid cloud configurations, with access to the watsonx service on IBM Cloud.
The initiative emerged from the IBM and VMware Joint Innovation Lab, which focuses on creating hybrid cloud and AI models based on a validated reference architecture that allows regulated industries to train and fine-tune machine learning models within regulatory constraints.

All pharmacists provide some level of drug information, whether to other clinicians or to patients. In fact, a latest survey found that 96.4% of 491 hospitals have staff pharmacists who routinely answer drug information questions,[1] and a separate survey of colleges of pharmacy showed that 89% of first professional pharmacy degree programs require at least one didactic course in drug information.[2] While most pharmacists are equipped with knowledge regarding the practice of drug information, the ever-expanding list of pharmaceuticals, as well as the overwhelming amount of clinical data, makes it difficult for practitioners to stay current with latest developments. This also results in the need for more advanced problem-solving skills in order to answer the more complex questions that challenge practitioners today.
Training in Drug Information Practice
Drug information certified are pharmacists whose primary responsibility is the provision of drug information. As with any specialty, formalized training beyond that received in pharmacy school is not required; however, this focused training does Boost the practitioner's clinical credibility and ability to compete with others for employment opportunities. These two intangible attributes may also be obtained with time and experience.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) provides residency accreditation in drug information. There are currently 31 ASHP-accredited drug information specialty residencies located throughout the United States. These residency programs are housed in community, academic, and industrial settings and offer a variety of learning opportunities. Although there are additional drug information residency programs that are not ASHP accredited, the standards and objectives for such accreditation may be used to describe the clinical skills set of the drug information specialist which go beyond the minimum standards required of all pharmacists.[3]
Most drug information residency programs provide the resident with 12 months of directed, postgraduate practical experience in the provision of comprehensive drug information. During this 12-month period, the resident is exposed to various aspects of drug information practice that range in scope and complexity, with the ultimate goal of training the resident to become a competent drug information specialist. Many of the competencies required of a drug information resident are specific to executive issues, such as the development and management of a drug information center, but there are many more competencies that construct the foundation of a drug information specialist's clinical practice. Drug information certified must be up-to-date with relevant drug-related literature in order to provide the most current information. They are often tasked as a pharmacy representative to pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) committees. Responsibilities may include preparing medication-use policies and procedures, improving a health system's adverse-drug-reaction reporting and medication-use evaluation programs, and creating and distributing newsletters containing pertinent medication-use information. The drug information specialist must have advanced literature search and assessment skills to develop drug monographs. Additional responsibilities often include developing patient safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations's standards, and appropriately utilizing drug-contracting opportunities to decrease drug expenditures. Drug information certified may also work in pharmacy informatics.
Career Opportunities in Drug Information
As previously mentioned, drug information certified work in a variety of settings, each with its own unique scope of practice. Academic drug information centers staffed by drug information certified offer pharmacy students practical experience in utilizing available medical media and developing literature-search strategies. Of 88 colleges of pharmacy surveyed, 20% require a drug information practice experience and 70% offer the experience as an elective.[2] These centers are often located within colleges of pharmacy or university hospitals. Most offer their services to a limited range of health care professionals, such as those within certain facilities or within the region or state. Others offer their services to community pharmacists and patients. Many health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and group purchasing organizations (GPOs) have contractual relationships with academic drug information centers, which in turn offer their services to the respective members of the organizations. In addition, HMOs, GPOs, and pharmacy benefit management companies (PBMs) have internal drug information departments that assist their members on a grander scale by providing many of the items utilized by P&T committees in making medication-use decisions. Many PBMs also provide consumer-based drug information via the Internet that is prepared by drug information specialists.
Proprietary and generic drug manufacturers are staffed with pharmacists who provide drug information specifically for the drugs manufactured by the respective companies. Although there is some information they cannot legally share and all information received should be critically evaluated, they do maintain a database of clinical studies, both published and unpublished, that provides hard-to-find information. These drug information certified are available to health care professionals and the public and should be contacted if a patient has an unexpected adverse drug reaction. In addition, drug information certified have practical knowledge of clinical trial design and often provide valuable insight as medical writers and in governmental agencies analyzing drug efficacy and safety claims.
An Underutilized Resource
Drug information certified are trained to provide clear, concise, and accurate drug information in a variety of settings. Not only do they provide quality service, but pharmacist-provided drug information, adverse-drug-reaction monitoring, and formulary management have been associated with significant reductions in the total cost of care in hospital settings, as well as reductions in patient deaths.[4] The presence of a drug information center providing these services in 232 hospitals reduced total cost of care per hospital by $5,226,128.22 (p = 0.003), including a $391,604.94 reduction in drug costs per hospital, and was associated with a total of 10,463 fewer deaths.[4] Disappointingly, an online survey of health care professionals showed that only 1% of respondents contact a drug information center when the need arises.[5] Another latest survey found that only 5.9% of 491 hospitals have a staff position dedicated to the provision of drug information and 4.1% have a formal drug information center.[1] Granted, contacting a drug information specialist may not be the fastest way to obtain drug information in an emergency situation; nonetheless, this underutilization raises several questions.
Today, the Internet provides a plethora of information for both health care professionals and their patients. Many practitioners probably use the Internet when seeking answers to questions. However, at least one study judged significantly more responses obtained from a drug information center as accurate when compared with those received from a Usenet newsgroup (p = 0.001).[6] Also, there is no quality control for these types of newsgroup services and other similar medical information sources housed on the Internet, and practitioners may be jeopardizing their own credibility when using these resources. Another source of information is facility-housed references, including print and electronic products. Electronic drug information products are becoming increasingly popular. A latest survey showed that 60.4% of 491 hospitals subscribed to some sort of electronic product.[1] Two interesting surveys on drug information references have been conducted.[7,8] In one survey, 40.9% of 22 respondents said they were not satisfied with the drug information resources to which their pharmacy currently subscribed.[7] In another survey, 38% of 71 respondents said they used a drug information reference at least 10 times a day, and another 35.2% used such a reference 3-5 times daily.[8] This discrepancy shows that practitioners regularly use some sort of drug information reference, even though they are not always satisfied with the information obtained.
With so many pharmacists retrieving information from drug information references, the underutilization of drug information certified as a resource cannot be attributed to a lack in the number of questions that need to be answered. Perhaps practitioners do not know how to find drug information specialists. Industry-based certified can be contacted via the manufacturer's Web site, and the Physicians' Desk Reference provides a listing of contact information for drug manufacturers.[9] Drug Topics's Red Book contains a list of academic drug information centers, and many colleges of pharmacy provide these services to the pharmacies in their respective states.[10] It is also worth contacting HMOs or GPOs, where applicable, to learn about the services they provide.
Drug information certified are a valuable resource available to support appropriate drug use and Boost quality of patient care. New practitioners are urged to take advantage of the expertise of drug information specialists, either within or outside of their own institutions.

BARCELONA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 7, 2023--
VMware Explore 2023 — Streamlining IT processes is not just a cost-saving strategy – it’s a necessity for organizations to remain competitive, secure, and adaptable in today’s hybrid work landscape. Today, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) announced advanced automation capabilities and expanded third-party integrations delivered through the Anywhere Workspace platform that provide organizations with the tools needed to simplify IT workflows, enhance security, and Boost overall efficiencies.
“Implementing automation capabilities across all aspects of IT workflows is essential for creating a self-healing, self-configuring, and self-securing environment, which aligns with our autonomous workspace vision,” said Shankar Iyer, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware. “Today’s announcements of next-gen Mac management powered by a modern automation toolkit and new integrations with Intel will equip organizations with unified management and insights that advance IT modernization and security.”
“It’s imperative to maintain a comprehensive view across the modern workspace and our strategy involves enhancing it through a platform-based approach and harnessing automation whenever possible. As a global team working with more than 90 countries, a holistic view across our estate is crucial,” said Scott Gardiner, group end user computing manager, Rentokil. “With Workspace ONE Intelligence as our central data service, we can see real-time security posture data and experience data to help us troubleshoot and remediate issues effectively. The ability to drill down to specific security issues and device timeline data allows us to simplify our support and remediation workflows. Once we pinpoint exactly where we have issues, we can build automations with Freestyle Orchestrator to proactively resolve, allowing us to scale our IT organization.”
Next-Gen Mac Management Simplifies IT Workflows and Saves Cost
macOS adoption is on the rise as organizations support device choice programs, but the use of siloed tools to manage these endpoints can cause complexity for IT teams and inconsistent experiences for employees. Organizations recognize that integrating all devices into a comprehensive UEM strategy is the best way to Boost security and reduce the cost and complexity of managing endpoint diversity.
VMware End User Computing addresses this need by introducing innovative new Mac management capabilities supported by a modern automation toolkit in Freestyle Orchestrator, adding to the robust macOS management features already offered in Workspace ONE UEM. Support for macOS endpoints in Freestyle Orchestrator delivers a modern, low/no-code platform to create and automate complex IT workflows, including app and patch deployments, software and resource sequencing, and desired state management of the OS. This allows admins to work more efficiently by enabling powerful automation for essential daily tasks such as onboarding and configuring Macs.
To further establish a self-healing, self-configuring, and self-securing autonomous workspace, VMware is announcing Hub Health, new third-party security baselines, and a new updates management dashboard for macOS. VMware will bring self-healing capabilities via Hub Health, a unique, always-on service running on the endpoint. Hub Health is powered by Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub and Workspace ONE UEM to automatically identify macOS device health trends and drive proactive UEM-led remediations for common issues. With new third-party security baselines for macOS, IT administrators can easily manage recommended configuration settings from common security standards without manual scripting. Alongside VMware Freestyle Orchestrator, IT can apply settings uniformly across all devices to ensure compliance and reduce errors. The new macOS updates management dashboard provides greater insights to secure Mac devices by supporting patch scheduling, user and device targeting, error handling, and escalations. These leading-edge Mac management capabilities are seamlessly integrated, eliminating management silos, which saves costs, enhances IT flexibility, and boosts security and compliance.
Enabling end-to-end security for today’s distributed workforce requires collaboration with a strong partner ecosystem. VMware continues to innovate with our technology partners and today is unveiling expanded integrations with Intel that enable more secure hybrid experiences.
Expanded Workspace ONE Integration with Device Vulnerability Insights from Intel
At VMware Explore 2023 Las Vegas, VMware introduced vulnerability management dashboards in Workspace ONE and emphasized the need for comprehensive vulnerability management, including assessment, prioritization, remediation, and reporting. Today, VMware is announcing an expansion of its partnership with Intel to automate the detection of vulnerabilities at the hardware, firmware, and driver level – further advancing its commitment to holistic vulnerability management.
The exclusive integration with Intel Device Health cloud service will feed telemetry data from all Intel Core processors to Workspace ONE UEM to provide improved vulnerability insights below the operating system. IT and security teams will be able to protect their organizations more proactively against firmware and hardware level threats with the connection of Intel’s vulnerability insights and Workspace ONE vulnerability reporting and remediation capabilities. The integration will enhance endpoint security and increase speed and efficiency of vulnerability identification and remediation.
“Intel and VMware have a longstanding collaboration and we are proud of today’s latest step to deliver enhanced IT management and security benefits for our joint customers,” said Michelle Johnston Holthaus, EVP and GM, Intel Client Computing Group. “The integration of Intel vPro management features and now also Intel Device Health cloud service, with Workspace ONE, provide a unique endpoint solution that will help businesses meet the needs of their hybrid workforce.”
