Juniper Networks is gunning to make itself the kingpin of the multi-cloud market with a slew of new switches, services and SD-WAN solutions it says will allow customers to secure and automate potentially unwieldy environments.

The Sunnyvale, Calif., networking vendor argues that for customers' IT operations to be ready to realize the advantages of the public cloud, they must consider not only their data centers, but their campus and branch networks, as well. If they don't, they may find their networks fractured, jeopardizing security and failing to live up to the agility, seamlessness and control promised by multi-cloud networks.

The majority of enterprise workloads now on-premise are expected to move to the public cloud in the next three years, Juniper argues. As workloads become more distributed, enterprises need to adopt strong, flexible multi-cloud strategies.

Juniper's newly expanded multi-cloud portfolio seeks to integrate end-to-end security and automation throughout the network, including its data center, campus, branch and cloud portfolio. The additions allow enterprises to migrate to a multi-cloud architecture "on their terms," while acknowledging that enterprise customers may be on considerably different paths toward that goal.

Here are six things to know about Juniper's expanded multi-cloud portfolio.

'A Different Intimacy' For Partners

Juniper's expanded multi-cloud portfolio puts channel partners in a position to do more than just sell products, said Mike Bushong, vice president of enterprise and cloud marketing. "Five years ago, devices were the products, and that's what you sold. Now the journey is the product and the devices just support that," he said. The portfolio offers partners an opportunity to bring "a different intimacy" to their customer relationships, Bushong said. "It's their proximity, the time they spend. It's more than one product in a silo, it's how all the products go together. That creates margin expansion. The channel wins, customers win, and vendors win because it's difficult to navigate on their own. Partners can discuss the journey. Don't just look at us as selling boxes, look at us as facilitating migration to cloud."

Universal Switch

Leading the charge for Juniper's expanded portfolio is a new universal switch for data center spine, edge and interconnect applications. The QFX10002-60C switch can be used as a spine or edge device for data center interconnect. It features 60X100 GbE interfaces. Along with that model, Juniper is also adding a QFX5210-64C port spine switch and a QFX5200-48Y top-of-rack switch to its portfolio. Secure workload transitions for are handled by a new QFX MACsec line card.

Simplified Campus Management

Juniper's new Sky Enterprise cloud management service allows businesses to deploy, configure and manage switching and security devices while reducing errors by up to 90 percent, the company says. The service is operated through a web dashboard, making managing campus and branch networks easier. The system also gives network operators visibility into wireless access points.

Switching Campuses

The expanded portfolio also includes campus multi-gig and compact core switches, the EX2300 and EX4300. The EX4300 multi-gig switch supports POE++ for new applications and MACsec to enable a secure on-ramp to the cloud, Juniper said. Another new model, the EX9250 switch is a compact campus core switch that gives enterprises multiple fabric options by supporting both Junos Fusion and EVPN-VXLAN.

Branching Out

Juniper's approach is to support a wide variety of software functions while allowing for application and security control that stays in sync with the rest of the network. The company's extended branch portfolio includes the new NFX150 network services platform combines branch security with hybrid WAN functionality and wireless 4G and LTE connectivity between branches. The platform can run third-party virtual network functions, Juniper says.

Subscription SD-WAN

Juniper's expanded multi-cloud portfolio includes its Contrail SD-WAN solution offered on a subscription basis. The solution bundles Juniper's SRX Series service gateways with the NFX platform for the orchestration required for multi-cloud-ready SD-WAN. Subscription pricing means customers have several options for arranging secure SD-WAN management.

Juniper Unveils New Cloud Services Program, Cloud-Based SD-WAN Offering For Partners


On the heels of its $405 million Mist Systems acquisition, Juniper Networks is continuing the momentum with its first cloud-based SD-WAN offering and Cloud Services Program for partners.

The Juniper Cloud Services Provider (CSP) Select Program is aimed at helping partners develop and deliver cloud and managed services, the company told CRN. The CSP program has been designed to recruit, enable and reward new managed services partners, as well as partners that are already offering cloud and managed services and are looking to expand their portfolio, said Brian Rosenberg, Juniper's vice president of global partners and alliances.

"Juniper is introducing the CSP Select program in direct response to the needs of our partners and their customers. Managed services are an area of explosive growth and establishing a compelling, partner-centric program for managed services signals Juniper’s commitment to supporting our partners’ growth [and] evolution in the cloud and the managed services space," Rosenberg said.

The new CSP Select program will help partners transition to a recurring revenue model, Rosenberg said. Right now, partners can offer four different services to their customers through the program, including Managed Router as a Service, Managed Security as a Service, Managed SD-WAN as a Service, and Managed WLAN, which uses technology that the company acquired from Mist Systems.

Juniper closed its acquisition of AI networking startup Mist Systems earlier this month.

"By joining the CSP program, partners will have access to a Juniper-powered SaaS solution that enables them to manage their customer’s connectivity and security needs on a cloud-based platform and bill them for those services on a monthly basis,” Rosenberg said.

The CSP Program is now available in the Americas. Juniper is planning a future rollout in EMEA and Asia-Pacific in the second half of 2019.

In addition to its cloud services program and portfolio, Juniper on Monday introduced its first cloud-delivered version of SD-WAN. The new Juniper Contrail SD-WAN as a service offering will help customers take the "next step" in their multi-cloud strategies, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said.

Juniper launched its premise-based Contrail SD-WAN offering last year.

"We’re launching a cloud-based version of our SD-WAN solution to allow enterprises to simplify operations by centralizing, automating and abstracting initial and ongoing operations of a distributed fleet of network infrastructure," said James Kelly, Juniper's lead cloud and SDN architect.

Together with Juniper’s Contrail Service Orchestration platform, partners and end customers can manage all of their environments, including the branch, campus and cloud SD-WAN, now with managed security and Mist Learning WLAN technology, the company said.

How Juniper is using AI in SD-WAN to differentiate itself

This week Juniper Networks announced that its Mist cloud and AI engine can be used to manage its SD-WAN solution. Juniper, historically a front-line wide-area network vendor, bolstered its router portfolio with the $450 million acquisition of 128 Technology (128T). 

The SD-WAN landscape is very crowded, but 128T took a different approach to solve the problem of using the internet as a business network. Its Session Smart Router (SSR) changes the way packets route on a network. 

128T was founded by the same leadership team that founded Acme Packet, which did something similar with voice and video traffic.  

AI starts with Mist at Juniper 

The AI capabilities came to Juniper via the 2019 acquisition of Mist Systems. Prior to Mist, Juniper's enterprise business was floundering with no real differentiator. Since then, Juniper has used Mist as the cornerstone of its enterprise strategy, and the results have paid off with that segment of its business showing continued growth as well as improved positioning in Gartner's Magic Quadrant. 

In late 2020, Juniper brought Mist Assurance to the 128T WAN suite. This lets customers address typical "day-two" issues, including anomaly detection, AI-based troubleshooting, and predictive insights. The idea of "day-two" problems refers to all of the critical, but often forgotten, problems an organization faces once an application is in production. This release addresses "day-one" operations that include initial configuration, provisioning, and deployment. Current customers would be using 128T's Smart Conduction platform, which is a good tool but does not have the sophistication of Mist. Also, Conductor is an on-premises product while Mist is cloud-based, which better addresses a world that is becoming increasingly dynamic and distributed.  

Customers can use Mist across the Juniper enterprise portfolio 

This release also makes it easier for customers to move to an all-Juniper network if they so choose, because Mist already works with the company's wired and wireless portfolio. The unification of the data from wired-wireless-WAN addresses the challenge of managing user experience. Historically, each portion of the network was managed in isolation, which worked fine in a world where applications and data resided on-premises, often in the same location as the user. As more and more workloads have migrated together, understanding user experience requires an understanding of the end-to-end network making siloed management ineffective. 

New security capabilities coming to the branch 

In addition to the day-one operational capabilities, Juniper added new branch security capabilities, which include IDS/IPS and URL filtering. The embedded security capabilities obviate the need for extra appliances, simplifying the typical complexity found in a branch. While IDS, IPS, and URL filtering isn't a holistic security stack, they do address the needs of most branches. More sophisticated customers would likely deploy separate appliances if they are looking for advanced capabilities. 

Juniper also unveiled two new cloud-managed SD-WAN gateways. The SSR120 and SSR130 are designed for small and mid-size branches. Like the larger SSR1000 line, which is designed more for head-end scale, the two smaller products offer multiple WAN link options that include LTE, which is becoming increasingly attractive as a backup connection. 5G will usher in the era of cellular first connectivity to branch offices and using LTE now as a backup is a good way to try operating a wireless WAN. 

This product release is an important one for Juniper because it has typically played second or even third fiddle to Cisco and HPE-Aruba. The Mist-ification of Juniper combined with 128T in the WAN and Apstra in the data center has given the company a solid set of products to compete more effectively. 

The fundamental tenet of my research has always been that share gains happen when markets transition and the network industry is rapidly shifting to AI-based platforms. Obviously, there is more to success than having good products, but Mist provides Juniper a solid platform upon which to continue building its enterprise products.

IBM's 'Hybrid' Cloud To Drive Innovation At Vodafone And Juniper Networks

IBM’s big bet on the “hybrid” multicloud, a computing environment that combines multiple cloud providers and clouds, is beginning to pay off -- and drive innovation by its partners.

This week, Big Blue made two important announcements regarding its cloud service business. The first was a $550M cloud services agreement with Vodafone. IBM will assume control of Vodafone’s cloud and hosting business. Big Blue will also work together to help Vodafone clients rapidly develop and deploy emerging cloud-based digital telco capabilities.

The new venture between the two long-term partners will help Vodafone integrate multiple clouds.

That’s an important step as the company gets ready for next stage of digital transformation driven by AI, 5G, Edge and Software Defined Networking (SDN).

“This venture demonstrates how we’re delivering on our strategy to radically simplify Vodafone, efficiently scale our business and deepen our customer engagement through a seamless blend of cloud and connectivity,” Vodafone CEO Nick Read is quoted as saying. “By focusing on our strengths in fixed and mobile technologies and combining those with IBM’s expertise in multicloud, this new venture helps us build on the success we’ve seen to date in our cloud business and accelerate its growth.”

The second announcement is a $325-million agreement with Juniper Networks. IBM will assist the network technology company to manage multiple cloud environments, including its existing infrastructure, to help cut costs and speed its journey to the cloud. 


In addition, the agreement will allow Juniper Networks to leverage IBM’s cognitive technologies and create an agile IT environment. “A key element of our digital transformation is to manage the complexities of our global operation and to get the most out of our current investments,” Bob Worrall, Chief Information Officer, Juniper Networks,” is quoted as saying. “In working with IBM Services, we will be able to partner with them on innovative solutions for our cloud-first business model.”

Big Blue will introduce the “Factory Development” model for application management, which will help Juniper Networks improve efficiency, and cost savings, as it moves toward a cloud-native setting.

“Our work with thousands of enterprises globally has led us to the firm belief that a 'one-cloud-fits-all' approach doesn't work and companies are choosing multiple cloud environments to best meet their needs,” Jetter, Senior Vice President of IBM Global Technology Services, quoted saying. “Working with Juniper, we are integrating cloud solutions with their existing IT investments via the IBM Service Platform with Watson. This gives them the opportunity to generate more value from existing infrastructure, along with helping them manage strategic services that are critical to their business.”

Meanwhile, Red Hat shareholders voted on the proposed acquisition, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2019.

IBM is paying bucks to acquire Red Hat.  The open source technology company will bring to IBM an innovative hybrid cloud platform, and a large open source developer community.

IBM’s bet on hybrid cloud comes at a time the company is trying to reverse a prolonged decline in revenues and profit margins that has Wall Street fleeing its stock.

Equity analysts welcomed, IBM’s recent partnerships. “These partnerships are important for IBM to show that it’s one of the leading players in the fast-growing cloud market where competition is intense,” says Haris Anwar, Senior Analyst at

Still, he doesn’t see investor sentiment changing in the near future. “But in a broader scheme of things, this arrangement is unlikely to Excellerate investor confidence in its share value in the short-run that has been under pressure for many years. Investors want to see positive results of the company’s turnaround efforts which have so far failed to create any excitement.”

Pharma chases the cloud

B y some estimates, the number of potential drug-like compounds exceeds 1060 small molecules. But medicinal chemists often don’t know which of this bounty of compounds will lead to a successful treatment for a given disease.

Given the enormous chemical space for small-molecule drugs, the number of possible interactions between a potential drug and a target macromolecule is “essentially infinite,” says John M. Newsam, an adjunct professor of chemistry at the University of California San Diego and CEO of Tioga Research. To accelerate the drug discovery process, companies now regularly incorporate in silico screening methods to complement wet lab testing. Computational tools help prioritize hits and winnow the list of compounds for screening in a wet lab against a particular target macromolecule, Newsam says.

Mathematical representations of interactions between small molecules and target biomolecules can be useful tools to predict winners. Until recently, though, the computing power needed for detailed calculations made the approach impractical. As it has in other industries, cloud computing offers an opportunity to scale up computational approaches to drug discovery.

Underscoring the potential power of cloud-based computing for drug discovery, the COVID-19 pandemic inspired an effort by an alliance of major pharmaceutical companies, including Takeda, Novartis, and Gilead, to identify novel antiviral molecules. In June 2020, the chemical modeling and simulations company Schrödinger announced that it was contributing computational design work to the alliance, tapping Google Cloud’s capacity to perform virtual screening against protein targets.

Some computational tools incorporate artificial intelligence algorithms, which effectively teach the tools to make predictions based on practice with training sets of data. They don’t directly take into account physical interactions between molecules. But the most-adopted computational approaches are based on molecular mechanics, modeling each atom as a particle and each bond as a spring.

According to Newsam, a drawback to molecular mechanics–based approaches is that they historically have relied on simplified methodology for calculating the strength of interactions between a protein and a small molecule. The simplification is to use a model system that doesn’t account for solvation or entropy. But these complicating factors can be accounted for in a different approach by calculating free energy perturbations (FEP). FEP is a statistical mechanical method for determining the free energy difference of molecules going from an unbound to a bound state.

In drug discovery, using FEP typically means calculating the free energy of a solvated ligand and protein target before and after they bind together, which can help Excellerate binding affinity predictions. In a 2017 paper, researchers from Roche and Schrödinger used the latter’s platform to calculate FEPs of novel ligands for a binding pocket on the protein cathepsin L. FEP worked better than two more-established computational methods, as well as a model-free approach (in which a medicinal chemist selected building blocks taking into account only known structure-activity relationships), and yielded eight compounds with improved affinity over a reference compound compared with only one with each of the other methods.

Schrödinger has an internal drug discovery pipeline, collaborates with partner pharmaceutical companies, and supplies the software platform to organizations that want to use its FEP-based computational tools. However, with all its projects, scale can be an issue. FEP calculations require a large amount of computational power, and “it takes between 2,000 and 5,000 molecules to get to a candidate,” says Wayne Tang, Schrödinger’s executive director of medicinal chemistry. And according to Robert Abel, its executive vice president of science, FEPs can demand nearly a full day of calculations per molecule per graphics processing unit (GPU), an image-rendering processor.

Schrödinger has its own capacity for performing calculations for ligands in parallel using servers with multiple GPUs, but Chief Technology Officer Pat Lorton notes that many GPUs are required over the course of a drug discovery project. In March 2020, Schrödinger partnered with Google Cloud to expand its platform’s capacity.

Cloud-based computing represents a potential order-of-magnitude acceleration for drug discovery. It allows for a much larger scale of parallel computing, which can boost the number of simultaneous FEP calculations made for potential drug molecules. The failure rate for a drug discovery project generating a candidate that reaches clinical trials is notoriously high, but Abel says an analysis copublished with Schrödinger and GlaxoSmithKline showed that predictive affinity scoring via large-scale deployment of computational algorithms could double the success rate of drug candidates advancing into the clinic. Its deal enables Schrödinger to use thousands of Google Cloud’s GPUs, which is crucial for accelerating its own drug discovery projects and those of its partners and for improving the probability of success.

To help quickly find therapeutics and vaccines for the fight against SARS-CoV-2, Google Cloud has donated 16 million hours of GPU time to empower Schrödinger to accelerate the discovery process. “We saw a dramatic acceleration in terms of how fast we could get good hits and move on,” Lorton says.

Which cloud delivery model is best for your business?

Determining the most appropriate cloud strategy for an organisation can be a daunting task and highly dependent on particular organizational circumstance. While total costs of a particular cloud solution are usually the most significant and deciding factor, other considerations also need to be weighed. Regulatory constraints, performance concerns, data security and privacy risks, and the availability of existing infrastructure can all influence business decisions. Enterprise cloud delivery models are generally divided into three distinct categories, each bringing unique advantages and disadvantages.


Private clouds utilize internally owned or leased infrastructure for the sole and exclusive use of the enterprise. They can be either situated on-premises (internal private cloud) or off-premises on shared or dedicated infrastructure (external private cloud). Private clouds are usually protected by network firewalls and virtual LANs to isolate workloads from the public internet or other private clouds operating on the same infrastructure. Management of the cloud environment may be handled internally or outsourced to a third-party.

This model enables the greatest control the platform and data contain within, as well as greater reliability through predictable service availability. Solutions can be tailored to suit specific business requirements, and this fine-grained control can result in higher levels of security and privacy. Lower network latency and higher performance can also be achieved with private clouds that are either on-premises of have dedicated network connectivity.

These advantages do come at a cost however. Internal private clouds require significant capital investment and incur ongoing static operational costs such a power, cooling and datacentre space. This model can result in lower resource efficiencies since designing private clouds that allows for growth leads to under-utilised infrastructure. If not properly planned, private clouds may be unable to offer burst capability when additional resource capacity is required.


Public clouds operated and managed by third-party providers offer virtual resources which can be dynamically requested and allocated via APIs or web services. The location of the shared (multi-tenancy) infrastructure they are generally hosted on may not be known. Some cloud service providers do offer dedicated infrastructure at additional cost.

The major benefit derived from public cloud model is lower capital expendature since businesses need only pay for resources consumed. There are little or no hardware or maintenance costs with this approach. Service providers do not require long term lock-in contracts yet offer virtually unlimited and elastic scalability.

While public clouds remove the complexity and costs associated with operating a private cloud, there are trade-offs. Outsourcing service management and maintenance reduces the level of control over the platform and data stored within the cloud. The nature of shared infrastructure and multi-tenancy lead to increased security risk and potential performance degradation through resource contention and over-subscription. A lack of transparency in security mechanisms implemented by cloud service providers may introduce further risk.


The hybrid model employs a mixture of private and public clouds to create a heterogeneous environment. Depending on the architecture and specific services required, this approach allows businesses to take advantage of benefits provided by both private and public clouds located on-premises and off-premises. Organizations can retain business critical systems on private infrastructure while providing the ability to provision additional capacity with the public cloud.

As a mixture of private and public cloud infrastructure, hybrid solutions provide flexible capacity and a cost-effective path for growth. Control of commercially-sensitive data and workloads can be retained within a private environment while larger, less critical datasets can be shifted to more cost-effective public cloud storage.

With the advantages of the hybrid cloud come additional complexity and risk. Dependency on internal infrastructure as single points of failure can be a concern. Mitigating the impact of such failure requires redundancy to be built into the private cloud at additional cost. Integration points between internal systems and public cloud infrastructure can be complex and problematic. Compliance is often harder to achieve and requires both private and public cloud operators to agree to and meet certain minimum standards. Data transferred between clouds must also be protected.


The three major cloud delivery models presented above are widely used and the pros and cons of each approach are well documented. In order to determine which cloud strategy is right for your enterprise, decision makers must consider factors such as budget, regulatory compliance, infrastructure requirements and risk appetite. Ultimately, business priorities will guide any compromises necessary to provide a solution that balances performance, scalability, and security.

Google Photos cloud content will soon appear in Android's Photo Picker, finally

  • Google Photos is preparing to integrate with the photo picker so you can share photos or videos stored in the cloud.

One of the key features of last year’s Android 13 release was the new system Photo Picker. The Photo Picker lets you choose exactly which media files to share with an app. In contrast, the custom media pickers that many apps use either get access to all or none of your photos and videos. It would be great if more developers adopted Android’s Photo Picker since it’s more private by design, but there’s a good reason that many haven’t: It’s still missing basic features like letting you select media files stored in the cloud. That could change soon, though, since we’re finally seeing signs that cloud content from apps like Google Photos will appear in Android’s Photo Picker.

If you’re not that familiar with Android’s Photo Picker, I don’t blame you, since there aren’t a lot of apps out there that utilize it right now. The Photo Picker is available natively on all devices running Android 11 and newer as it’s part of an updatable Project Mainline module, but it’s also available on devices running Android versions as far back as Android 4.4 thanks to a backported version provided by Google Play Services. Here’s what the Photo Picker currently looks like if you were to find an app that invokes it:

As you can see, the Photo Picker has two tabs: “Photos” and “Albums”. The “Photos” tab shows you all your photos, videos, or both in reverse chronological order. The “Albums” tab shows you media items from the Camera, Videos, Screenshots, Downloads, and Favorites albums on your device. If you store all your media files locally on your device, then the Photo Picker will show every media file you could possibly want to share. However, if you store most of your photos and videos on Google Photos, then Android’s Photo Picker will be missing a lot of items.

Google knew this would be a problem for many users, which is why they designed Android’s Photo Picker to support selecting items from cloud media providers from the get-go. Cloud media providers don’t automatically appear in Android’s Photo Picker, though; they need to implement an API that gives apps read-only access to media files stored in the cloud. This is similar to how the older system file picker works with cloud media providers, but since that experience has existed for years now, many apps have had time to integrate with it.

Android’s system file picker, which the Photo Picker supplants for picking media files, has a more dated UI but offers broader access to files from local and cloud storage providers. It can be invoked directly or indirectly (leftmost image, tapping the “browse” button).

The same can’t be said for the new Photo Picker, which still hasn’t had a single cloud media provider integrated with it. This is even though back at I/O 2022, a year and a half ago, Google said that cloud media providers like Google Photos will be supported in an upcoming update. This is finally coming to fruition soon, though, since recent versions of the Google Photos app have added full support for Android’s Photo Picker.

After activating this feature, a new “Cloud media app” page appears under Settings > Apps. Here, we were able to activate Google Photos as a cloud media provider for Android’s Photo Picker. Enabling this feature also opened up a new “Google Photos access” option in the settings page for the Google Photos app. This option leads to an in-app “Photo picker” page that lets you decide whether to grant the Photo Picker access to the photos and videos you’ve stored on Google Photos.

With Google Photos now set as the cloud media provider, the Photo Picker is able to pull in the photos and videos I backed up to the cloud. This greatly expands the number of media files I can share with an app, as shown below.

Even with this expansion, however, the Photo Picker still has some limitations. First, the “Albums” tab still doesn’t show local albums created by apps like Snapseed, so you’ll need to find media files saved in those albums by scrolling through the “Photos” tab. Second, cloud media items aren’t shown when the Photo Picker is invoked through the permissions dialog, which is part of a new feature introduced in Android 14 that lets users grant apps partial access to photos and videos. That means cloud media items are only when the Photo Picker is invoked by an app. Fortunately, this applies even when an app indirectly invokes the Photo Picker, as is the case in apps like Google Chat and Google Keep following a recent Google Play System Update.

Hopefully, Google rolls out this feature soon to users since the lack of cloud media support in the Photo Picker is partly why many developers aren’t utilizing it in their apps yet. After Google Photos integrates with the Photo Picker, hopefully, other cloud media providers like Microsoft OneDrive follow suit.
