Ericsson secures $14bn Open RAN contract with AT&T

The deal is a boost for Ericsson as it will work with one of the largest telecom players in the world, while Nokia’s shares fell after the announcement.

AT&T has chosen Ericsson to help upgrade its network infrastructure, in a deal that could be worth up to $14bn over five years.

The telecoms giant said it aims to have 70pc of its wireless network traffic flow across open-capable platforms by late 2026.

AT&T expects to have fully integrated open radio access network (Open RAN) sites operating from 2024, in collaboration with Ericsson and Fujitsu.

Open RAN differs from traditional radio access networks by allowing different parts of the network’s infrastructure to be built by different vendors. Supporters claim these networks will break down barriers to entry in the telecoms sector, increasing the amount of competition and lowering costs as a result.

AT&T said it plans to scale up its Open RAN environment throughout its wireless network in 2025 with the help of multiple suppliers, including Dell Technologies, Ericsson, Fujitsu and Intel.

“This move to an open, agile, programmable wireless network positions AT&T to quickly capitalise on the next generation of wireless technology and spectrum when it becomes available,” the company said.

“These innovative technologies will enable lower power, sustainable networks with higher performance to deliver enhanced user experiences.

“Ericsson’s open architecture will provide a foundation and springboard for developers driving innovation through open and programmable networks and bringing new suppliers into the industry. This will foster modernisation and competition in the US wireless equipment market.”

Ericsson plans to use its 5G Smart Factory in Texas to manufacture the necessary equipment for this contract. Its president and CEO Börje Ekholm said high-performance and differentiated networks will be “the foundation for the next step in digitalisation”.

“I am excited about this future and happy to see our long-term partner, AT&T, choosing Ericsson for this strategic industry shift – moving to open, cloud-based and programmable networks,” Ekholm said.

“Through this shift, and with open interfaces and open APIs, the industry will see new performance-based business models, creating new ways for operators to monetise the network.”

Meanwhile, AT&T’s decision to choose Ericsson for this deal has been seen as a blow to Nokia’s presence in the US. Nokia’s shares fell by 8pc after the announcement while Ericsson’s rose by 9pc, Reuters reports.

AT&T chooses Ericsson for new US network

STOCKHOLM: AT&T says it chose Ericsson to build a telecom network that uses only open radio access network (Open RAN) technology and will cover 70% of its wireless traffic in the United States by late 2026, marking a milestone for the new technology.

Open RAN promises to cut costs drastically for telecom operators as it uses cloud-based software and gear from many suppliers instead of relying on proprietary equipment supplied by such companies as Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei, which do not work with each other.

While several telecom providers, such as Telefonica and Vodafone, have tested the technology, mass adoption has been slow by existing carriers. New networks by Dish and Japan’s Rakuten use Open RAN.

AT&T has been analysing Open RAN for six months with a team of hundreds, an executive said and has looked at multiple vendors and sought proposals.

“All of the new equipment that we are going to be putting out will be Open RAN capable,” AT&T Network president Chris Sambar said.

AT&T’s spending could approach US$14bil over the five-year term of the contract with Ericsson, the company said.

Winning the Open RAN deal will make Ericsson the largest supplier to AT&T as it slowly takes over Nokia’s share, the company said.

In 2020, Nokia suffered a setback when Samsung won a US$6.64bil contract to supply 5G equipment to Verizon in the United States.

Open RAN has struggled as major telecom vendors resisted opening up their proprietary interfaces for other companies over fears of losing business.

Ericsson has agreed to open up those interfaces across its footprint, Sambar said.

“You’ve got to supply them something that they want, and in return, we are going to get something that not only AT&T wants but the entire industry wants,” he said.

AT&T will still have contracts with other Open RAN vendors outside of this deal.

AT&T expects fully integrated Open RAN sites operating in coordination with Ericsson and Fujitsu, starting in 2024. In 2025, the company’s network will have equipment from multiple suppliers. — Reuters

Orange, Ericsson combine for Spain private network push

Ericsson and Orange Spain outlined a plan to work together on 5G private networks for the B2B segment, highlighting logistics, transportation and manufacturing as potential target sectors for the partnership.

The drive will see the pair combine to offer customised networks designed to serve specific enterprise use cases, such as real-time automation to deliver improved productivity and higher levels of worker safety.

Ericsson explained the deployments will use its 5G core technology and Orange’s 5G standalone network with dedicated network functions supported at the enterprise’s facility. As part of the deal with B2B customers the operator will manage the private network.

The two claim the partnership is the first of its kind within the Spanish market.

Orange Spain CTO Monica Sala said tailored private networks could “empower businesses to embrace new opportunities and gain a competitive edge in their industries,” adding the infrastructure would offer “enhanced security, real-time automation and unmatched customisation”.

Ericsson Iberia head of cloud software and services Luisa Munoz noted companies would be able to streamline operations and cut costs to make the businesses more efficient.
