The outing was organized by the First Responder Golf Foundation, a nonprofit started by a fire captain in KCK that provides free rounds to first responders.

“You are out here with your like-minded brothers and sisters, and you are decompressing and recalibrating,” said founder Steve Pope. “It’s very peaceful to me. I destress.”

Before the foundation, Pope said he struggled with mental health. In his experience, he felt his struggles jeopardized his relationship with his family.

“That’s why it means so much to me,” Pope said. “I’ll tell my story, and if it resonates, then hey, that’s what it is about.”

When forming the program three years ago, Pope said he focused his efforts on encouraging others to speak about their trauma and seek help when they need it.

“What people don’t realize is that we are human beings. So, the things we go out and do and see on a daily basis, it stays in your mind," said retired fire chief Rob Stottlemyre. "It’s very traumatic. When us older guys came on the job, you were weak when you talked about it.”

Situated on the eighth hole, mental health professionals offered expertise in treating mental health.

Counselor Cassidi Dye, who specializes in helping first responders, said there is a weakening stigma around mental health in the first-responder community.

“Allowing them to get the help is important because the helpers need help,” Dye said. “The more of us that try to break down that barrier and accept help is going to be the best outcome.”

When rocked by tragedy, the Bahlinger family didn't retreat into themselves. Instead, they put their energies into working so that others wouldn't have to go through what they did.

In February 2022, Matthew Bahlinger took his own life at the age of 24 after a yearslong struggle with depression. In the aftermath, Matthew's parents created a foundation, the Matthew Bahlinger Memorial Fund, to raise awareness and take concrete steps to assist others struggling with mental health issues.

Gerald "Bert" Bahlinger said one of the foundation's key aims is to start a conversation around mental health.

"It's about making people comfortable in talking about (mental health), reducing stigma" he said. "If you see someone who's uncomfortable, talk about it. If they're struggling, let's do something about it."

The foundation's efforts are primarily aimed to help the LSU Tiger Band, with which the Bahlinger family has a longstanding connection. Not only did Matthew play saxophone in the band in 2016 and 2017, but three of the family's four children were also members.

The foundation provides Tiger Band section leaders with QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training, which helps to recognize and assist people struggling with mental health.

Donations to the fund are also going toward installing a part-time graduate student counselor from LSU's Psychological Services Center for the current school year. The counselor’s office will be in the College of Music and Dramatic Arts building, with their services available to all music and drama students and all LSU bands.

Having someone available on short notice is crucial — it's something that both Gerald and Alice Bahlinger say wasn't available to their son when he desperately needed it.

Another of the foundation's programs is Matt's Dinner. With food donated by local restaurants — including ones Matthew worked at — volunteers serve dinner to Tiger Band students and staff at the end of Band Camp. Last weekend the foundation hosted its second dinner: operating like a well-oiled machine, it fed over 350 people in 20 minutes.

Matthew's mother Alice said her son was a funny, lovable young man who was often on-hand to assist others.

"He always wanted to help people who needed it," she said. "Even though, in reality, he was the one who needed help the most."

The foundation stays true to that kind, helping nature. Though Matthew is no longer here to help, his memory may well help save the lives of others.

"(Setting up the foundation) was bittersweet at first, because the very thing we were doing was something that would have helped Matthew the most," Alice Bahlinger said. "It felt a bit like closing the gate after the horse had already escaped. But we want to help anyone who needs help, anyone who wants it."

According to the American Psychiatric Association, one in every six people will experience depression at some time in life. Initially, it often affects people in their late teens to mid-20s.

"(Mental health care) seems to be more needed these days," Alice Bahlinger said. "Everyone knows how vital this need is."

The CVS Health Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CVS Health, has awarded $6.6 million in grants to remove barriers to maternal health services and expand the doula workforce. It is focusing its awards on three main entities: Massachusetts General Hospital, the American Heart Association and the March of Dimes.

Each grant will be focused on improving maternal health outcomes for historically marginalized communities by addressing the conditions most often associated with maternal mortality and severe morbidity, CVS said.

"Black women have a maternal mortality rate 2.6 times higher than white women, and studies continue to show that over 80% of maternal deaths in the U.S. could have been preventable," said Sheryl Burke, senior vice president of corporate social responsibility and chief sustainability officer for CVS Health. "By collaborating locally with organizations who know the community best, we are working to diversify the doula workforce, and bring maternal health services and educational resources to the people that need it most."

WHAT'S THE IMPACT?

Of the funds, $1.66 million over three years will go to support the Mass General Brigham DrEaMH (Driving Equity and Maternal Health outcomes) Initiative. This effort will expand the MGB Birth Partners Program and launch the Maternal Health Equity Postpartum Program in Suffolk County.

The programs aim to deliver maternal health services through a mobile van and increase access to doula care for people who are most likely to have adverse pregnancy outcomes during their third trimester and 12 weeks post-birth.

"To promote maternal health equity, we need to offer perinatal and postpartum services in a manner that is most accessible during and immediately after birth," said MGH Chief Community Health and Health Equity Officer Dr. Elsie Taveras. "These resources can set families up for a lifetime of physical and mental wellbeing and are vital to ensuring health equity in underserved populations."

About $4 million over five years will support March of Dimes' work to expand doula care regionally, diversify the doula workforce and provide educational materials to consumers and healthcare providers that highlight the benefits of doula care.

The doulas will focus on providing physical, emotional and informational support to pregnant people and their partners before, during and after childbirth. March of Dimes is actively researching where this program will have the greatest impact and will select six locations later this year to implement it.

Lastly, the CVS Health Foundation awarded the American Heart Association $1 million over two years to help address hypertension, which it called "a key risk factor in the most common killer of new mothers."

The program will link women and health care providers to hypertension education, monitoring and treatment during pregnancy and postpartum. It will use strategies, including doula-mediated referrals, to increase the percentage of Black birthing people with controlled hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and postpartum in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Orlando, Florida.

THE LARGER TREND

Nearly a year ago, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services invested about $20 million to reduce disparities in maternal and birth outcomes. The funding is meant to expand and diversify the workforce caring for pregnant and postpartum individuals, increase access to obstetrics care in rural communities, and support states in tackling inequities in maternal and infant health.

A study in Health Affairs published in February found that understanding the disparities faced by various racial and ethnic groups is key to addressing preterm births and low birth rates, which should spur action from payers, providers and lawmakers.

The link between race and maternal health has received increased attention in latest months. In September 2022, for example, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association released data showing evidence that women of color are at higher risk of pregnancy-related complications, regardless of having commercial health insurance or Medicaid.

Instead, the numbers indicate U.S. maternal health disparities are likely the result of broader health system and societal challenges, including underlying chronic conditions, racial inequities and likely biases within the healthcare system itself.

Leaders of a new health-care-focused foundation formed with the remaining assets from selling the nonprofit Hospice of Chattanooga and its parent company say they're looking to fund efforts that address health disparities in Chattanooga.

The newly formed nonprofit foundation, Journey Health Foundation, has $103 million in assets, making it the largest health-care-specific philanthropic organization in the region, according to board Chair Carol Newton.

Newton assumed the role of foundation chair after holding the position of board chair for Hospice of Chattanooga at the time of the sale.

Hospice of Chattanooga and other end-of-life care and support services providers within its then parent company, Alleo Health System, were purchased in September 2021 by Virginia-based Care Hospice, a for-profit company with locations in 19 states.

"We are fortunate that Alleo Health's merger with Care Hospice has provided us with the resources to invest in a wide range of community health initiatives, specifically those that can address long-standing public health disparities throughout greater Chattanooga," Newton said in an emailed statement. "This work by the Journey Health Foundation will happen independently of Care Hospice's operations, which will continue to provide compassionate, professional palliative care services to families in our region."

Journey Health Foundation CEO Tracy Wood, who was the CEO of Alleo Health when it was purchased by Care, said in an interview that the vision for the foundation is to take Chattanooga from being an unhealthy city to one of the healthiest cities in the nation.

To do that, Wood said the group is looking to take a data-driven approach and fund projects that will fill gaps in Chattanooga's underserved communities, which in addition to health care services could also include efforts to Boost access to food, affordable housing, transportation and other resources.

"We know our social environment plays a huge role in our overall health," she said.

Newton said the board, which is mostly comprised of medical professionals or people with long careers in the health care industry, is keenly aware that quality health care is not equitably administered in the U.S. or the Chattanooga region.

"Poor health outcomes can determine so much about a person's quality of life and a region's economic competitiveness," Newton said. "While we do not believe that we can rectify all of these inequities quickly or easily, every investment we make in communities that have been traditionally underserved can lead to tangible improvements, from increasing life expectancy to reducing infectious diseases, to promoting healthy behaviors and other preventative measures."

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- The Carolyn L. Farrell Foundation for Brain Health will be honoring both those who receive and provide compassion for others at “Inspire Joy: A Celebration of Care,” according to a latest news release.

The celebration/fundraiser will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Avon Oaks Country Club, 323400 Detroit Road in Avon.

The news release reflected on the 12 years that the foundation “has been providing programming to inspire and Boost lives of those challenged with brain health issues.”

“This is an important event,” noted Executive Director Jerry Devis, “because the foundation eases the stigma associated with brain health issues, and we encourage positive life experiences that people may still enjoy despite diagnoses like dementia.

“Money raised by the benefit provides unique opportunities and services for individuals in the community that strongly promote inclusive socialization and joyful experiences.”

The information from the organization emphasized that dragonflies symbolize happiness, hope and love. They will decorate the hall to remind donors and those they benefit.

The evening will be a joy itself, with an open bar and dinner. Entertainment includes pianist Ruth Williams and violinist Nadine Kodysz prior to dinner and a DJ from “On the Mic Entertainment” from Canton for post-dinner dancing.

There will also be a silent auction and a live auction.

The foundation’s annual celebration “honors the past and current work of the foundation and the hundreds of people with dementia/Alzheimer’s and their families served by the foundation since its founding in 2011,” the news release notes.
