When a Cisco router is initially configured, the router’s DNS lookup function is enabled by default. This function is only useful if the router utilizes a DNS server on the network; otherwise, it will cause delays to users. When an erroneous URL is typed, the DNS lookup function will attempt to find the URL on the DNS server. If no DNS server is available, the user’s computer will hang while the lookup is performed. To decrease user delays if no DNS server is configured, disable the DNS lookup function on the Cisco router.

  1. Log on to the Cisco router using a terminal emulation application such as Hyperterminal.

  2. Type “enable” at the command line and press the “Enter” key. The “router>" command prompt appears.

  3. Type the administrator password and press the “Enter” key. The “router#” command prompt appears. If the router’s host name has been changed during configuration, the hostname will appear in place of the “router” prompt.

  4. Type “configure terminal” at the command prompt and press “Enter.” The command prompt changes to “router(config)#” or “hostname(config)#” where “hostname” is the router’s assigned host name.

  5. Type "no ip domain-lookup" at the command prompt and press “Enter.” The command prompt returns and the DNS lookup function is disabled on the router.

  6. Type “exit” and press the “Enter” key to exit configuration mode. The command prompt returns to “router>.”

  7. Test the router to ensure that the DNS lookup function is disabled. To test the router, type the command below and press “Enter”:

    show run | include domain-lookup

You should receive the verification “no ip domain lookup.”

  8. Type the following command at the command prompt and press “Enter” to save the configuration setting:

    copy running-config startup-config

To become an enterprise IT architect, you’ll need knowledge of systems deployment, design and architecture, as well as a strong business foundation.

Best CompTIA certifications

CompTIA is a nonprofit trade association made up of more than 2,000 member organizations and 3,000 business partners. The organization’s vendor-neutral certification program is one of the best recognized in the IT industry. Since CompTIA developed its A+ credential in 1993, it has issued more than two million certifications.

CompTIA certifications are grouped by skill set and focus on the real-world skills IT professionals need. Armed with these credentials, you can demonstrate that you know how to manage and support IT infrastructure.

Cisco Study: Mobile Access Creating Big Productivity Gains

In addition, the study claimed that use of mobile data services led to a 1.9 percent increase in the Gross Domestic Product of the U.S. in 2003. That productivity increase was the equivalent of $10.4 trillion, according to Cisco.

The study was conducted for Cisco by OMNI Consulting Group and measured total factor productivity (TFP), which is a method of determining how well businesses use capital, labor technology to produce goods and services.

The study found particularly strong productivity gains in specific industries. For instance, it found that insurance claims adjusters could handle 7.4 more claims per week by using mobile devices and wireless networks. Similarly, sales representatives in the healthcare and pharmaceutical field were able to conduct 8.3 more physician briefings each week because of mobile data and voice access.

The study also found that hotel guests were far more likely to select a hotel with broadband connectivity and would spend almost seven per cent more for hotel rooms with connectivity.

"This study shows that with mobile data services, workers are not only more productive, but they also develop new business processes that yield increased customer and job satisfaction as well as competitive advantage," Steve Hoch, Cisco's director of service provider mobility, said in a statement. "This research shows businesses that the rewards of investing in mobile data services are real and compelling."

"The scope of this research breaks new ground in quantifying the net impact of mobility and its associated productivity gains by examining business and worker performance under many different scenarios," Frank J. Bernhard, technology economist and managing principal with OMNI Consulting Group, said in a statement.

Ethernet switch

That's according to Canalys, which on Wednesday reported overall Q1 revenue for the Ethernet switch market as down 8.8 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.

Canalys attributed the revenue decline to aggressive port-pricing competition and the weakened public sector demand in both North America and Europe. Despite a 2.5 percent annual increase in ports, Canalys said, total end-user revenue also decreased 12.3 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010.

Matthew Ball, Canalys director of enterprise services, warned that increasing pressure on the switch market could have a ripple effect for the channel.

"If current trends continue, vendors and channel partners will have to sell more volume than expected to reach revenue targets," Ball wrote in a research note. "This competition could trigger a wave of merger and acquisition activity among smaller switch vendors as they try to gain economies of scale."

Among vendors, Canalys highlighted the ferocious competition between Cisco, HP Networking and Juniper. According to the researcher, Cisco's overall Ethernet switch share dropped to 68.2 percent from the fourth quarter's 69.2 percentage, and from 73.1 percent a year ago. Cisco, which is in the midst of a broad restructuring as it attempts to counteract several disappointing quarters' worth of earnings, still derives nearly half its revenue from switching and routing. Switching revenues declined 9 percent in Cisco's third quarter, according to its most recent earnings report.

HP Networking, on the other hand, is gaining in the market, according to Canalys, which gave HP a 14.1 percent share of Ethernet switching. HP, which increased its stake in part from the 2010 acquisition of 3Com, has been aggressively touting itself as a lower-cost alternative to Cisco, especially in data networking.

Juniper, meanwhile, continues to gain on its EX switches, and according to Canalys, also gained share from the year-ago quarter, currently pegged at 2.4 percent, with growth more than 22 percent from a year ago.

The fourth- and fifth-place enterprise switch vendors (Layer 2/3/4 only, as Canalys evaluates them) are Brocade and D-Link, the latter of which gained 18 percent and claims a 1.6 percent share. Other vendors account for 11.5 percent of the market collectively.

Cisco will continue to be challenged on all sides, Canalys noted.

"Cisco is facing intense pressure on both its core switch and overall enterprise networking business," Ball said. "It is up against aggressive competition from Juniper in routing, Riverbed [Technology] in WAN optimization, F5 Networks in application delivery controllers and Brocade in storage networking.

By region, North America saw the steepest declines in Ethernet switching, down 13.3 percent and largely attributable to declines in federal government spending. Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) decreased 6.7 percent year over year, and Asia Pacific (a 3.7 percent decline) and Latin America (a 1.4 percent decline) were also down. Canalys noted that the true effects of the March earthquake in Japan won't be known until Q2 numbers are finalized.

The "lone bright spot" in Q1 was the growth in 10Gb port shipments, according to Canalys. Those increased 69.9 percent year over year. 1Gb ports, by contrast, grew 12.4 percent, and 100Mb ports decline 5.7 percent. Data center networking will be an increasingly contentious battleground, Ball said, given the range of vendors that announced data center fabric strategies within the past year.

Programs

Program Details
ESF Short-Term Programs Travel abroad with an ESF faculty member and your classmates! Most short-term courses are between one to three weeks in length and take place over spring or summer break.
ESF Exchange Programs Spend a semester or summer abroad with one of ESF's university partners.
ESF Partner Study Abroad Study abroad for a winter, summer, or semester with one of ESF's recommended study abroad providers, any other SUNY institution or through another study abroad program provider. Many of these programs are immersive or field-based opportunities. Short-term, summer, and semester programs are all available!

Quick Tips

Before researching programs, think about your goals for education abroad. What type of experience are you hoping to have and what are you most interested in learning? What type of opportunities do you have limited access to in Syracuse and how might you gain those abroad? Use these questions to help guide you to better understand what it is you want out of your international experience and how you might be able to find a program that fits those criteria.

In addition to thinking about what is important to you, take some time to recognize what is not important to you. When choosing a education abroad program, it can be easier to find a "perfect" match if you understand what you are willing to compromise. Are financials the most the important piece to you? Specific classes for your major? Perhaps a research syllabu in a specific field? Rank the things that are most important to you so we can help you find that "perfect" opportunity.

You never know where you might find recommendations, advice or input. Ask your classmates, professors, advisors, parents, guardians, coaches, etc. You never know what you might discover. Don't forget to visit OIE as well – we serve as the repository for all of the different opportunities in front of you and can help guide you when you're not sure where to even start.

A Study Guide to Humanae Vitae

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, Priests for Life

Forty years is not a long time in Church history. Indeed, we are still living in the moment of Humanae Vitae (issued on July 25, 1968), and of the challenge it presents to the world.

Humanae Vitae does not identify the key problem of our day in the realm of sex or birth or "the pill," but rather in the myth that we can be God. Pope Paul writes at the beginning of the document, "But the most remarkable development of all is to be seen in man's stupendous progress in the domination and rational organization of the forces of nature to the point that he is endeavoring to extend this control over every aspect of his own life -- over his body, over his mind and emotions, over his social life, and even over the laws that regulate the transmission of life” (n.2).

The Pope here is painting a wider vision of the problem. We think everything belongs to us, but the reality is that we belong to God. "Humanae Vitae" means "Of human life." Human life came from God, belongs to God, and goes back to God. "You are not your own," St. Paul declares. "You have been bought, and at a price" (1 Cor. 6:19-20). Sex and having children are aspects of a whole cluster of realities that make up our lives and activities. We suffer from the illusion that all of these activities belong to us. “This is my life, my body, my choice.

The problem we face is not that our society is obsessed with sex. Rather, it is afraid of it-- afraid of the total reality and power of what it represents, where it comes from, and where it leads. Sex properly understood requires that we acknowledge God who made it. More than that, sex can never be separated from its purpose: to insert us into this immense, powerful movement of life and love that started when God said "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3) and culminates when the Spirit and the Bride say "Come, Lord Jesus!" (Revelation 22:17).

Sexual activity means so much that it is wrong to diminish its message or deny its full reality: it belongs in the context of committed love (sealed by marriage) and openness to life precisely because this is the only context great enough to hold its message and reflect the greater reality to which the gift of sexuality points us and to which it commits us.

This is a reality that is bigger than all of us. It is the self-giving which starts in the Trinity, and is revealed in a startling way on the Cross, and then challenges each of us in our daily interaction with others, with God, and with our own eternal destiny. It is so real and so big that it is scary. That's why so many today are afraid of the full reality and meaning of sex. That's why Pope Paul VI wrote Humanae Vitae.

That is also why our Priests for Life pastoral team wrote this Study Guide. We have also established a special website, www.HumanaeVitae40.com, to promote the teachings of this document. It is our daily prayer that this effort will lead many believers to understand, embrace, and proclaim the beautiful truth of human life.

INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY GUIDE

James J. Pinto, Jr., M.E.V.
Editor: A Study Guide to Humanae Vitae

This Study Guide will be most effective if one first thoroughly familiarizes himself with its content and layout. Review the table of contents and the location of each section listed. The Study Guide is to be used by an individual or group as a side by side companion with the text  of Humanae Vitae included in this booklet. The three Essays offer unique insight with questions for further discussion. The Contraception of Grief: A Personal Testimony presents a riveting and practical witness to why Humanae Vitae is the wholesome truth.

The Glossary assists the reader in clarifying some key terms contained in the Encyclical. Glossary terms are listed by the number/paragraph in which they first appear. The terms will be marked with an *asterisk in the Humanae Vitae text as a note to the reader that the term is contained in the Glossary.

After practicing Fr. Pavone’s Foreword one should read the Summary of the Introduction and Section I, followed by the practicing of the Introduction and Section I. of Humanae Vitae itself. After completing the Introduction and Section I. of Humanae Vitae; the reader answers the series of questions below the Summary of the Introduction and Section I.  The sequence followed for the Introduction and Section I is repeated for each following section: practicing the Study Guide Section Summary, practicing of the corresponding Encyclical section itself and returning to the Study Guide questions for that particular section. The questions are meant to refer the reader back to particular paragraphs/numbers (n.or n.n.) of that section where he/she will find the answers. One may work on the answers to these questions while practicing the paragraph/number, or, wait until he/she has read the entire section and then complete the answers. Continual returning to the text of the encyclical helps emphasize that the document itself is the primary source of instruction and the basis for individual and group applications.

The three Essays have several questions at their conclusion to help foster reflection and discussion. A personal witness to the truth and wisdom of Humanae Vitae is presented in The Contraception of Grief: A Personal Testimony.

This Study Guide is meant to be a “springboard” to delve more deeply into Humanae Vitae and its themes, in order to stimulate reflection, and a lifestyle of holiness.

For those considering the possibility of facilitating a study group, this study guide lends itself to a discussion study group method of learning. While a leader/facilitator encourages the group and keeps it “on track”, it is the individual sharing and group dynamic that contribute most to the learning process. The facilitator is not a lecturer, neither is he there to deliver all the answers. The facilitator seeks to shepherd the group learning process and does everything possible to solicit their contributions. Members interact and learn from everyone, including the facilitator. A Facilitator’s Guide is available through Priests for Life at www.HumanaeVitae40.com. The Facilitator’s Guide seeks to assist you in leading a group and lays out suggested study sessions.

It is our hope, that on the fortieth anniversary of Humanae Vitae, this study guide will assist in promoting the Church’s clear and authoritative word on transmitting human life. May all who hear this true, prophetic and lovely word be assured that: the Church has always issued appropriate documents on the nature of marriage, the correct use of conjugal rights, and the duties of spouses. These documents have been more copious in recent times. (n.4)
