As we transition from one year to the next, it's a season of reflection and looking forward. As an analyst, the end of the year is a time to learn from past work, analyze its outcomes and consider its potential impact on the future.

In 2023, enterprise data management (EDT) solutions underwent significant changes due to the influx of generative AI technologies. These technologies have fundamentally altered how businesses approach data management, analysis and usage. In this post, I’ll review some of 2023’s highlights in this field.

How Different Areas Of EDT Are Evolving

Over the past year, there have been promising developments in EDT across several key areas. These include data management itself, where the focus has been on using AI to Boost how data is organized and accessed. The data cloud sector has also experienced growth, with more businesses adopting cloud-based solutions because of their flexibility, scalability and facility for integrating tools that handle unstructured data.

In data protection and governance, there has been a continuous effort to enhance security measures to safeguard sensitive information. Database technologies have also improved, particularly in handling and processing large data volumes more efficiently by incorporating generative AI.

Recent advancements in data integration and intelligent platforms have been geared towards better aggregating data from multiple sources, allowing for more comprehensive data analysis. The integration of AI and ML has further enhanced the capabilities of these platforms, improving data analysis interpretation and offering more profound and insightful analytical outcomes.

“In a way, this AI revolution is actually a data revolution,” Salesforce cofounder and CTO Parker Harris said during his part of this year’s Dreamforce keynote, “because the AI revolution wouldn't exist without the power of all that data.” Harris's statement emphasizes the vital role of data in businesses and points to the increasing necessity for effective data management strategies in 2024.

As data becomes more central, the demand for scalable and secure EDT solutions is rising. My accurate series of articles focusing on EDT began with an introductory piece outlining its fundamental aspects and implications for business operations. This was followed by a more in-depth exploration of EDT, particularly highlighting how it can benefit businesses in data utilization. These articles elaborated on the practical uses and benefits of EDT and its importance in guiding the strategies and operations of modern businesses.

As businesses continue to leverage generative AI for deeper insights, the greater accessibility of data is set to revolutionize how they manage information. This development means enterprises can now utilize data that was previously inaccessible—a move that highlights the importance of data integration for both business operations and strategic decision-making. For instance, untapped social media data could offer valuable customer sentiment insights, while neglected sensor data from manufacturing processes might reveal efficiency improvements. In both cases, not using this data equates to a missed opportunity to use an asset, similar to unsold inventory that takes up space and resources without providing any return.

Revolutionizing Data Cloud Platforms

Incorporating AI into data cloud platforms has revolutionized processing and analyzing data. These AI models can handle vast datasets more efficiently, extracting previously unattainable insights due to the limitations of traditional data analysis methods.

Over the year, my own collaborations with multiple companies suggested the range of technological progressions. As I highlighted in a few of my articles, Google notably improved its data cloud platform and focused on generative AI with projects including Gemini, Duet AI and Vertex AI, reflecting its solid commitment to AI innovation. Salesforce introduced the Einstein 1 Platform and later expanded its offerings with the Data Cloud Vector Database, providing users with access to their unstructured enterprise data, thus broadening the scope of their data intelligence. IBM also launched watsonx, a platform dedicated to AI development and data management. These moves from major tech firms reflect a trend towards advanced AI applications and more sophisticated data management solutions.

At the AWS re:Invent conference, I observed several notable launches. Amazon Q is a new AI assistant designed for business customization. Amazon DataZone was enhanced with AI features to Boost the handling of organizational data. The AWS Supply Chain service received updates to help with forecasting, inventory management and provider communications. Amazon Bedrock, released earlier in the year, now includes access to advanced AI models from leading AI companies. A new storage class, Amazon S3 Express One Zone, was introduced for rapid data access needs. Additionally, Amazon Redshift received upgrades to Boost query performance. These developments reflect AWS's focus on integrating AI and optimizing data management and storage capabilities.

Recent articles have highlighted Microsoft's role in the AI renaissance, one focusing on the launch of Copilot as covered by my colleagues at Moor Insights & Strategy, and another analyzing the competitive dynamics in the AI industry. Additionally, Microsoft has expanded its data platform capabilities by integrating AI into Fabric, a comprehensive analytics solution. This suite includes a range of services including a data lake, data engineering and data integration, all conveniently centralized in one location. In collaboration, Oracle and Microsoft have partnered to make Oracle Database available on the Azure platform, showcasing a strategic move in cloud computing and database management.

Automating Data Protection And Governance

With the growing importance of data privacy and security, AI increasingly enables the automation of data governance, compliance and cybersecurity processes, reducing the need for manual oversight and intervention. This trend comes in response to the rise in incidents of data breaches and cyberattacks. AI-driven systems have become more proficient at monitoring data usage, ensuring adherence to legal standards and identifying potential security or compliance issues. This makes them a better option than traditional manual approaches for ensuring data safety and compliance.

Security is not only about protecting data but also about ensuring it can recover quickly from any disruptions, a quality known as data resilience. This resilience has become a key part of security strategies for forward-thinking businesses. Veeam emphasized “Radical Resilience” when it rolled out a new data protection initiative focused on better products, improved service and testing, continuous releases and greater accountability. Meanwhile, Rubrik introduced its security cloud, which focuses on data protection, threat analytics, security posture and cyber recovery. Cohesity, which specializes in AI-powered data security and management, is now offering features such as immutable backup snapshots and AI-driven threat detection; in 2023, it also unveiled a top-flight CEO advisory council to influence strategic decisions. Commvault has incorporated AI into its services, offering a new product that combines its SaaS and software data protection into one platform.

LogicMonitor upgraded its platform for monitoring and observability to include support for hybrid IT infrastructures. This enhancement allows for better monitoring across an organization's diverse IT environments. Additionally, Cisco has announced its intention to acquire Splunk. This acquisition will integrate Splunk's expertise in areas such as security information and event management, ransomware tools, industrial IoT vulnerability alerting, user behavior analytics and orchestration and digital experience monitoring that includes visibility into the performance of the underlying infrastructure.

Key Changes for Database Technology

Advancements in AI and ML integration are making database technology more intuitive and efficient. Oracle Database 23c features AI Vector Search, which simplifies interactions with data by using ML to identify similar objects in datasets. Oracle also introduced the Fusion Data Intelligence Platform, which combines data, analytics, AI models and apps to provide a comprehensive view of various business aspects. The platform also employs AI/ML models to automate tasks including data categorization, anomaly detection, predictive analytics for forecasting and customer segmentation, workflow optimization and robotic process automation.

In my previous discussion about IBM's partnership with AWS, a major highlight is the integration of Amazon Relational Database Service with IBM Db2. This collaboration brings a fully managed Db2 database engine to AWS's infrastructure, offering scalability and various storage options. The partnership between AWS and IBM will likely grow as the trend of companies forming more integrated and significant ecosystems continues.

Database technology also evolved with MongoDB queryable encryption features for continuous data content concealment. MongoDB Atlas Vector Search now also integrates with Amazon Bedrock, which enables developers to deploy generative AI applications on AWS more effectively. It’s also notable that Couchbase announced Capella iQ, which integrates generative AI technologies that exploit natural language processing to automatically create demo code, data sets and even unit tests. By doing this, the tool is streamlining the development process, enabling developers to focus more on high-level tasks rather than the nitty-gritty of code writing.

Leveraging Data Integration Platforms

Generative AI technologies have also improved data integration capabilities by using historical data, analyses of trends, customer behaviors and market dynamics. This advancement is particularly influential in the finance, retail and healthcare sectors, where predictive insights are critical for strategic and operational decisions. There's been a shift towards adopting data lake house architectures, which combine the features of data lakes and data warehouses to help meet the challenges of handling large, varied data types and formats, providing both scalability and efficient management. This evolution in data architecture caters to the growing complexity and volume of data in various industries.

Integrating various data sources is crucial for many companies to enhance their business operations. Software AG has introduced Super iPaaS, an evolution of the traditional integration platform as a service (iPaaS). This advanced platform is AI-enabled and designed to integrate hybrid environments, offering expansive integration capabilities. Cloudera has also made strides with new data management features that incorporate generative AI, enabling the use of unstructured data both on-premises and in cloud environments. Its hybrid approach effectively consolidates client data for better management. Informatica's intelligent data management cloud platform integrates AI and automation tools, streamlining the process of collecting, integrating, cleaning and analyzing data from diverse sources and formats. This creates an accessible data repository that benefits business intelligence and analytics.

In my collaborations throughout the year with various companies, one key theme has emerged in this AI-driven era – data has become even more fundamentally important for businesses. It's clear that the success of AI heavily relies on the quality of the data it uses, and AI models are effective only when the data they process is accurate, relevant and unbiased.

For example, in applications such as CRM or supply chain optimization, outcomes are directly influenced by the data’s integrity. Instances where AI failed to meet expectations could often be traced to poor data quality, whether it was incomplete, outdated or biased. This year has highlighted the necessity of not just collecting large amounts of data but ensuring its quality and relevance. Real-world experience underscores the need for strict data governance and the implementation of systems that ensure data accuracy and fairness, all of which are essential for the effective use of AI in business.

As AI technology advances and data quality improves, the use of generative AI in understanding and engaging with customers is becoming ever more prominent. Backed by good data management, this enhances the customer experience by making the customer journey more personalized and informative. It allows businesses to gain valuable insights from customer interactions, helping them continuously refine and Boost their offerings and customer relations. Cisco on Wednesday unveiled its new brand to help channel partners go after more small to midsized business customers: Cisco Designed for Business.

Cisco Designed for Business is a curated portfolio that includes traditional products, such as Meraki and WebEx, and other offerings that have been specifically created and priced for small business customers, Marc Monday, global head of small business at Cisco, said at the tech giant's 2019 Partner Summit in Las Vegas.

Cisco purchased Linksys in 2003 for $500 million as a networking option for the SMB market but sold the assets to Belkin in 2013. Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins told CRN at this year's partner summit that the company's efforts around targeting SMB customers is different than its previous efforts because the company has developed a "holistic" strategy as opposed to taking what it already had and trying to retro-fit those solutions for SMBs.

"We used to joke that we had an enterprise mini-me strategy. We would take enterprise products and paint them a different color," Robbins said. "In this case, we have purpose-built solutions and our team has done a great job of segmenting our customers and working with our partners to define programs, sales strategies, and incentives that all line up with what's needed in that segment. We have a huge opportunity for share there, and we are going to need to drive our programs very effectively with our partners."

Houston-based Computex thinks that the Meraki portfolio will be the best fit for small business customers. The firm is having a lot of success selling Meraki solutions to its own base of small business clients, said Worth Davis, CTO for Computex.

"Meraki fits very well into the S in SMB, but it's been moving up into the midmarket," Bhutto said. "I think this time around, if Cisco can just take [Meraki] and focus on the down-market, it will play well since they started out competing with Ubiquiti and others."

Cisco Designed for Business brand includes Webex for Collaboration; Firepower, Umbrella and DUO for Security; UCS and Hyperflex Edge for small-scale application compute; Cisco Business for on-prem networking; Meraki Go for easy, app-managed cloud Wi-Fi. New product developments include Cisco Business Wireless Access Points and a new Meraki Go offering. Cisco is also making the Catalyst 1K switch affordable for small businesses, the company said.

SMB customers can purchase Cisco Designed For Business solutions through their trusted partner, whether that's a VAR, a distributor, or if they prefer to buy digitally through a partner via a marketplace, Monday said.

"It's important for us to meet them where they are, and then meet them with the channel partners they prefer to work with," he said.

Partners should expect Cisco to drive customer awareness for the new portfolio, as well a dedicated partner-focused sales force for small business.

"We need to de-mystify the idea that we are too expensive and too complex. It's just not true," Monday said. "For partners, there's virtue in the bigness and support of Cisco."

Cisco has "barely scratched the surface" on the SMB opportunity, Jim Walsh, Cisco's senior vice president of growth marketing, told partners during his keynote on Wednesday. Cisco Designed for Business was designed to make it easier to buy, manage, and support IT and the effort includes new marketing tools and resources for partners, he said.

"Small businesses don't wake up thinking about technology, they are thinking about how they are going to drive business," Walsh said. "We need to make it easy for them to connect, compute, and collaborate securely."

The changing workplace underscores the importance of ensuring that organizations remain secure, comply with regulations, and protect their employees/data from cyber threats.

Security and compliance are core to Cisco Webex 

Cisco has been providing secure access and collaboration for many years. I recently tapped a panel of experts from Cisco to outline how the vendor is helping organizations achieve security and compliance in collaboration as they enter a new era of hybrid work.

I spoke with Radhika Chagarlamudi, vice president of Cisco Webex Platform and Infrastructure Engineering, and Niraj Gopal, director of product management for Webex Enterprise Security and Compliance, in my first three-person ZKast interview. Highlights of the ZKast video, done in conjunction with eWEEK eSPEAKS, are below:

Security and compliance are both important but very different 

  • Security and compliance are interchangeably used terms because both have to do with managing risk. But there is a different between the two.
  • Security is the implementation of technical controls that protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of an organization’s critical assets—both physical assets and data. 
  • Compliance is the process of implementing controls—whether it’s a solution provider, an enterprise, or a regulation mandating those controls. 
  • Security and compliance provide people with trust that they’re being protected.
  • For example, a security control is when an organization ensures that passwords are rotated frequently, while compliance is the process of validating that an organization actually rotated those passwords.

Security is integrated into Webex 

  • Cisco’s approach is unique because security is built into every Webex feature from the start, rather than being an add-on.
  • Cisco follows a 360 approach to security, where it examines the overall application attack surface and builds controls into the app to mitigate those risks. 
  • When it comes to user identity, everybody must be authenticated on their device. Only then can a user host a meeting, share files, or perform other actions.
  • Cisco also offers data loss prevention (DLP) by integrating with threat intelligence industry partners like Talos.
  • Since every organization is different, Cisco provides additional controls to fine tune individual deployments through the Control Hub—a single pane of glass for the Webex suite.
  • Control Hub simplifies the process for administrators by allowing them to set policies for specific groups and workflows.

Lack of awareness could cause businesses to violate policies 

  • Enterprise users are often unaware that they’re violating compliance policies, such as by using a personal device to forward a file to co-workers and exposing the organization to malware.
  • Cisco has controls that protect external collaboration. DLP policies follow users, no matter who they’re talking to externally. 
  • On the data governance end, Cisco classifies conversations based on content. For instance, a message announcing a company picnic is classified as public, whereas a shared confidential file is classified as restricted.

End-to-end encryption is a must have in collaboration 

  • Cisco specializes in end-to-end-encryption for meetings and messaging to protect content in the cloud. 
  • Cisco has built its own security endpoint within Webex—a combination of hardware and software.
  • Cisco provides end-to-end encryption for both room devices and third-party devices to secure the entire collaboration experience, whether participants are joining a meeting at work or at home with a personal laptop. 
  • When a user is in a secure meeting, the devices visibly show (with a badge on the screen) that the experience is end-to-end encrypted.
  • The Webex meeting client itself also shows that the identity of the participants in that meeting has been verified.

Webex has a broad partner ecosystem 

  • Cisco has an open Webex ecosystem, where it partners with the best-in-class security and compliance providers. 
  • Cisco has one of the biggest partner ecosystems in industry with 15-plus partners.
  • Cisco has a developer portal that lists of all of its public application programming interfaces (APIs), which developers use to build integrations. 
  • Cisco takes a similar approach with security through a public events API, which can be integrated into any tool or partner solution. 
  • Cisco also works with some competitors like Microsoft. For example, Microsoft Cloud App Security (MCAS) can be used with Webex without additional license fees.

Buyers should use security and compliance as part of the decision criteria 

  • When considering a collaboration solution provider, organizations should look for:
  • A company that’s not just checking the box for security, but has security built into its DNA.
  • The right security capabilities that align with the organization and its requirements.  
  • A company that values data privacy and transparency. Cisco conducts third-party penetration tests and shares the results with its customers—an example of the company’s privacy and transparency.
  • A company that goes beyond compliance basics like FedRAMP and keeps up with global certifications.

Cisco uncorks AI-based security assistant to streamline enterprise protection

With Cisco AI Assistant for Security, enterprises can use natural language to discover policies and get rule recommendations, identify misconfigured policies, and simplify complex workflows.

Cisco has unveiled its natural language-based AI Assistant for Security aimed at helping enterprise customers better assess security situations, eliminate configuration errors and automate complex tasks.

The Cisco AI Assistant for Security will first be implemented as part of the vendor's cloud-based Firewall Management Center and Cisco Defense Orchestrator services. Cisco’s Firewall Management Center is a centralized platform for configuring, monitoring, troubleshooting and controlling Cisco Firepower Next-Generation Firewalls. The orchestrator platform lets customers centrally manage, control and automate security policies across multiple cloud-native security systems.

Among the goals of the AI Assistant are to reduce the time it takes for customers to respond to potential threats and simplify the entire security process.

"Using natural language, an administrator can iterate with the AI Assistant to do things like discover and identify all the policies that control access to an application, define a new policy or rule for the administrator, and implement the policy," said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager of security and collaboration at Cisco, in a blog about the news.

"The AI Assistant can also identify duplicate or misconfigured security policies from amongst thousands of existing policies and make recommendations for resolving them. To me, this is mind-blowing, because this is a level of intelligence that just isn't possible without AI," Patel stated.

In addition, Patel said the security assistant will let customers describe and contextualize events across email, the web, endpoints, and the network to tell security operation center analysts exactly what happened, the impact, and best next steps to take to remediate problems and set new policies.

Cisco first talked about the security assistant at its Live event in June, saying an AI-based assistant will provide easy-to-use situation analysis for network and security teams, correlating intelligence across the Cisco Security Cloud and relaying potential impacts; going forward, customers "won't need to have a Ph.D. to manage a firewall policy," Cisco stated.

In addition to the Assistant, Cisco added a new security feature across its firewall family that lets security teams see into traffic to look for malware without having to decrypt it first. 

"Decrypting traffic for inspection is resource-intensive and fraught with operational, privacy, and compliance issues," Patel stated. With the 7.4.1 Operating System, which is now available, the system can analyze encrypted traffic to identify indicators of malicious behavior that humans can't, and it does so without decrypting, Patel stated.

"For instance, an insulin pump that's running certain operating systems cannot run an end-point client. If it gets attacked by malware that communicates with the outside world via encrypted traffic, you can lose control of the insulin pump," Patel wrote. "With Encrypted Visibility Engine, you can now block this at the firewall."

In Texas, Fort Worth’s Public Wi-Fi Initiative Gets People Online

When Fort Worth, Texas, began delivering more services digitally during the COVID-19 pandemic, officials found that several neighborhoods weren’t fully utilizing the resources because they lacked dependable at-home internet access.

“Some of it is infrastructure. The incumbent service providers didn’t have those types of offerings in those communities,” says Kevin Gunn, the city’s CTO and IT solutions director. “Some of it is financial. When faced with buying food or having internet service, it’s not a tough decision. We started thinking about ways that we could get internet service into those neighborhoods in short order.”

The city’s endeavor to supply public Wi-Fi had its challenges. There were building-related signal transmission issues. And there was the red-tailed hawk’s nest that paused equipment installation until fledglings living there decamped . (The bird is a protected species in the state.)

But by partnering with Cisco, Fort Worth was ultimately able to extend its government enterprise network to provide connectivity to 40,000 residents in the Ash Crescent, Lake Como, Northside, Rosemont and Stop Six neighborhoods via a separate, segmented network.

Cisco Supports Increasing Digital Equity

The network’s Cisco Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul infrastructure includes Meraki MR86 outdoor access points and Catalyst switches that have been mounted on towers and streetlight poles, distributing a high-speed signal throughout the neighborhoods, says Gary DePreta, area vice president for state and local government and education at Cisco.

“For a city to dig trenches and provide fiber optics to 40,000 to 50,000 residents, that would be measured in years,” DePreta says. “Because of the urgent need to provide services during the pandemic, time was of the essence. Essentially, that technology provides the data capacity and speeds of fiber-optic cabling, but you can deploy it from a wireless infrastructure.”

The city anticipated that the planning for its public CFW-Neighborhood network would take six months, but the process ultimately lasted nine.

“We’ve got beautiful landscapes and undulating hills and lots of mature trees and other things that interfere with radio signal propagation,” he says. “It was a lot more of a challenge than we anticipated initially.”

How Fort Worth Is Reaching into Communities

Fort Worth worked with radio engineers to determine where to install system elements, placing items out of reach of objects that could interfere with propagation, Gunn says.

“It’s picking the right location to put the two inputs so you get the best signal,” he says. “Some of the facilities we identified initially were places like libraries, which are one-story buildings here in Fort Worth; so, we pivoted to those that had two or more stories.”

Leading up to the public network’s August 2022 debut, the city sponsored an extensive community outreach effort to ensure that residents understood that their online activity wouldn’t be tracked. Only aggregate usage data is being gathered, Gunn says, to monitor network performance and service quality.

IT department members gave presentations at neighborhood association meetings and other community gatherings; when trucks were sent out to install system components, technicians had postcards with a QR code leading to information about what the vehicles were doing in the area.

“A lot of effort went into communication, making people aware and getting them excited about this project in their neighborhoods,” Gunn says. “That paid dividends once we were finally up and running. We saw users immediately jumping onto the network and becoming advocates for us by doing that.”

How Local Agencies Can Address Needs Now

Simplicity was a key design goal for the network; the city wanted a solution that would be reliable enough to withstand hot sun, sleet and other local conditions, and one that was easy to deploy, support and use, Gunn says.

“We really haven’t had any ongoing maintenance, other than maybe a storm coming through and misaligning an antenna or having one or two pieces of equipment with a power failure,” Gunn says. “Outside of that, it’s been set it and forget it.”

IT leaders in Fort Worth hope to eventually enable fiber optic connectivity for every address. Until that can be achieved, the current structure allows the city to offer Wi-Fi access in areas where it had been unreliable. And some system elements — such as the Cisco Catalyst switches, which contain additional ports — are helping to position the city for future tech growth.

“We knew this was deploying a significant amount of infrastructure in those neighborhoods,” Gunn says. “That’s now a platform for us to deploy smart streetlight technologies, smart signals at intersections, school crossing beacons and any of the other types of smart city initiatives we might want to pursue.”

Cisco’s Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul technology had traditionally been applied in areas such as the transportation sector, DePreta says. Fort Worth’s implementation was the first time the technology had been applied in a major metropolitan area.

DePreta believes the CFW-Neighborhood network could serve as a model for other cities looking to address a pressing connectivity gap before they’re able to fully institute a long-term solution.
