ALFRED — Alfred State College architecture students in Design Studio 5 presented comprehensive plans to reimagine the village of Angelica.

Two groups of 15 students worked for eight weeks and presented their concepts and ideas to citizens in Angelica.

The groups looked at a variety of different areas around Angelica including Main Street, Park Circle, Joncy Gorge Park and the Allegany County Fairgrounds. The groups showed concepts for economic enhancement, community beautification, rehabilitation and preservation of historical resources, and introduced new business opportunities that would be beneficial to the residents.

Led by professors William Dean and Matt DiRado the students met with groups from the village to learn more about the village, researched the area, and then put together presentations that included vision boards, a formal presentation of their ideas, and an animated walking tour of the concepts proposed.

“Projects like this deliver our students a real-world experience,” commented DiRado. “In eight short weeks, each group worked together to develop plans from what they had learned and seen in Angelica. The students did an excellent job taking what they have learned in the classroom and applying it to a client. Our hope is that the Village will be able to use some of the concepts as they plan for their future.”

Karin Bruton-Winterfeldt was in attendance for the presentation and was impressed.

“From street design, business growth and all the way up to affordable housing, the suggested revitalization of our beautiful village is a hoped-for reachable goal. We were blown away by their professionalism and incredible foresight.” 

The Architecture Department has done similar projects in the past with other villages — Alfred, Andover, Bolivar, Belfast, Belmont, Caneadea and Fillmore.

Cisco IoT Security Architecture Launched To Simplify, Defend Industrial IoT

The new Cisco IoT security architecture will Boost visibility industrial IoT environments, according to the tech giant.


Cisco is strengthening IoT security with the introduction of a security architecture for industrial IoT.

Launched at Cisco Live EMEA in Barcelona this week, the new IoT security architecture will Boost visibility across IT and operational technology (OT) environments, said Cisco’s director of global IoT, Joe Malenfant.

"First, you have to connect things, then, you have to secure them to be able to get that data," Malenfant told CRN. "We're taking something that's designed for security and made it relevant to the operations team."

Cisco's IoT security architecture gives businesses insight into their entire IoT environments, including both their networking and industrial assets in the field or at the edge of the network. The new architecture is powered by Cisco Talos, the firm's security intelligence and research group, which will provide real-time cybersecurity monitoring and anomaly detection, San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco said.

The architecture includes Cisco's industrial IoT network security product called Cyber Vision and its Edge Intelligence data extraction tool. Cisco Cyber Vision is a software-based security solution for the automated discovery of industrial assets and relies on technology from Sentryo, the IoT security startup that Cisco acquired in 2019. Cisco Cyber Vision can analyze traffic from connected assets, create segmentation policies in Cisco ISE and DNA Center to prevent threats from moving around within operational environments.

Also integrated into the architecture is Cisco Edge Intelligence, a new edge computing offering that can simplify data extraction at the edge of the network, said Cisco.

Cisco said that the goal of the IoT security architecture is to remove the complexity of a multi-vendor infrastructure to simplify IoT cybersecurity that can be managed on any of Cisco’s gateways, switches, or routers.

"It's really a holistic IoT security architecture with Cyber Vision at the center of it all and integrated with our robust portfolio on the IT side," Malenfort said. "Digitization is letting companies take what they are doing on the OT side and connect it with the IT side because that network is getting more robust and smarter."

For partners, Cisco Cyber Vision will allow partners to offer new value-added services to their customers, such as security assessments for operational environments, Malenfort said. "There's a huge opportunity for partners in building services around Cyber Vision to integrate IT and OT and make the network even more relevant for their clients," he said.

Partners can also use Cisco Edge Intelligence to help customers extract data, Malenfort said. "Once they secure the data, [partners] can help customers build data flows," he said.

Cisco last January went big with its partners in IoT space. The company rolled out an expanded product line that expanded its networking capabilities to the IoT edge and introduced a brand-new set of resources for partners, including a formal IoT partner program.

Cisco is changing its DNA from a hardware company to a software, service-centric leader with the launch of its new Digital Network Architecture on Wednesday, setting the stage for a new enterprise networking sales motion for its 70,000 channel partners.

"For Cisco, who had really a consistent approach for networking for the better part of 25 years or longer, this is a departure from a hardware-centric model," said Brian Ortbals, vice president of Advanced Technology at World Wide Technology, a St. Louis-based solution provider and Cisco Gold partner ranked No. 11 in CRN's 2015 Solution Provider 500 list. "This is going to create such huge services opportunity for partners, and it's going to reinforce the value of Cisco software proposition and leadership in that space."

Robert Soderbery, senior vice president of Cisco's Enterprise Products and Solutions, said every Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) will eventually become an expert at selling the new digital architecture.

"We are absolutely going to change the DNA of the channel," said Soderbery, in an interview with CRN.

Digital Network Architecture (DNA) is an open, software-driven, service-centric solution based on automation, virtualization, analytics, managed services and open APIs that is aimed at enabling digital business. DNA is delivered within the Cisco One Software family and includes a new automation platform and applications, an array of cloud-based management services, and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) targeting the enterprise.

The San Jose, Calif.-based networking giant has been lecturing for years about digitization and businesses transitioning to the digital age. DNA appears to be Cisco's answer to digitization and shedding the notion that Cisco is still a hardware-centric company, according to WWT's Ortbals.

With DNA, Ortbals said, Cisco has recognized what customers are demanding in the market.

"Customers are looking for new methods to be able to create simplicity in management to deliver services more quickly, to create more automation and ultimately one of the best upsides with the overall model is the ability to gain insight and manage more readily the security compliance of an environment," said Ortbals.

DNA also opens the door for new opportunities involving the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) market, which WWT is having more conversations about in 2016, he said.

"IoT creates new network traffic demand and new opportunities to do analytics at the edge, and the legacy model is not [conducive] to those types of customer requirements today, at least not easily. So they're allowing for new technologies to help provide solutions to those changing customer requirements," Ortbals said.

New technology inside DNA unveiled at Cisco Partner Summit in San Diego on Wednesday includes an automation platform, APIC-EM, which consists of a new version of Cisco's enterprise controller retooled for greater scale and resiliency, with a broad set of network services and device support. The platform has been deployed in more than 160 customer environments running up to 4,000 devices from a single instance, according to Cisco.

The digital architecture also consists of policy services including an enhanced Cisco Intelligent WAN (IWAN) and a new Easy Quality of Service (QoS) that enables the network to update QoS settings consistently across the network in real time. Another service is Plug and Play, a cloud-based deployment service that sits on routers and switches talking directly to the network controller, which reduces deployment time from weeks to days, according to Soderbery.

"We believe automation and APIC-EM is so compelling, we want every customer and ever partner to take advantage of it. So we're distributing that completely free -- the platform and the base automation services are free ," said Soderbery.

Cisco also revealed Enterprise NFV, which decouples hardware from software. Cisco's NFV provides a full software stack including the virtualization infrastructure software, the virtualized network functions (VNFs) and orchestration services to enable branch office service virtualization. The infrastructure software can be hosted on Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System) and eventually for x86 hardware. VNFs include routing, firewall, WAN optimization and wireless LAN services, and will be expanded to additional Cisco and third-party VNFs.

"Being able to virtualize your functions and run them in the cloud or on industry-standard hardware platforms has really been a service provider conversation -- we're now making it an enterprise conversation," said Soderbery. "Its an enterprise NFV as a package solution for enterprises that want of take advantage of NFV."

The final new technology launched around DNA is CMX (Connected Mobile Experiences) Cloud, a cloud-based management service for Cisco wireless infrastructures that allows customers to take advantage of location and presence analytics to provide businesses with insights and personalized engagement.

Nirav Sheth, senior director for Cisco's Americas Partner Organization, said DNA is giving channel partners the tools to become a digital leader for customers and a way to accelerate an install-based refresh. He said Cisco is also driving closer alignment between its internal sales teams and partners around DNA.

"Looking holistically, it's an opportunity for our partners to go deeper with their customers, to have more upfront professional services, there's recurring revenue opportunities and an opportunity for our partners to accelerate because they're going to be in lockstep with their Cisco sales team," said Sheth, in an interview with CRN.

DNA also complements Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) technology by extending the policy-driven approach and software strategy throughout the entire network -- from the campus to the branch, wired to wireless, and the core to the edge, said Soderbery.

Worldwide spending on digital transformation technologies will grow to $2.1 trillion in 2019, with a CAGR of 17 percent, according to a accurate report by market researcher IDC. Cisco plans to put its channel community on the front end of the transformation with DNA, said Soderbery.

"Partners are moving to the line of business or the digital conversation. … They're not just technology providers, but solution providers for managed services," said Soderbery. "I can't imagine anyone being able to compete with us."

Cisco is changing its certification strategy to have more focus around DNA in order to make every CCIE and CCNA a software specialist. DNA will be included in many Cisco incentive programs including VIP (Value Incentive Program), according to the company.

"We fully expect that every single partner driving enterprise networking is going to be on this DNA journey with us," said Sheth.

The mission of the Drexel Bachelor of Architecture degree is to pursue architecture as a professional discipline by combining the rigors of the academy with the realities of contemporary architectural practice. Drexel Architecture’s work/study program is an experience-based learning model that complements and provides an alternative to traditional programs. 2+4 Option

The 2+4 Option is an accelerated route designed for a class of well-prepared students entering directly from high school. In this program, two years of full-time coursework address the basic principles of architectural design and satisfy fundamental university core requirements in the arts and sciences as well as those job-related skills that are needed for entry-level professional positions. A comprehensive review of performance will take place after each year to ensure that students are making sufficient progress in all areas.

After successfully completing the minimum requirements of the full-time phase, students find professional employment in the building industry, including architecture firms, while continuing their academic program part-time in the evening for four additional years. The Part-Time Evening Option is one of only two part-time evening architecture programs in the United States, and it leads to an accredited Bachelor of Architecture degree. The part-time evening sequence is seven years, but transfer students with university-level design credits can reduce its length by meeting specific program requirements through transcript and portfolio review. Bachelor of Architecture students may be able to receive credit in the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) for work experience obtained before graduation, which is part of most state licensure requirements. The Bachelor of Architecture program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

Accreditation Information

In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 8-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.

Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

At Drexel University, in the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, the Department of Architecture, Design & Urbanism the following NAAB-accredited degree program:

Bachelor of Architecture 227 credits, (equivalent to 150 semester credits)

Cisco Expands Learning Portfolio with New Business Architecture Training and Certifications

Cisco announced it is expanding its learning portfolio with new business architecture training and certifications designed to accelerate the pace of business transformation, innovation and growth. Providing professionals with the latest skills, tools and best practices enables them to build and strengthen the bridge between technology solutions and business needs. These new offerings mark the second accurate addition to Cisco’s business transformation-focused learning portfolio.

“The relationship between customer and vendor is being significantly disrupted by digital transformation, with the long-term result being a closer relationship, spanning more than the deal,” said Shadi Salama, Channel Leader – East Region, Cisco Middle East. “As the industry transforms and companies try to evolve their businesses, new talent gaps are forming. Our new Business Architecture training and certification offerings target the business skills that go hand in hand in conjunction with the technology skills to address the growing talent needs brought forth by business transformation.”

According to a accurate analyst report, only about 15 percent of organizations feel they have the right talent in place for digital transformation. Cisco is addressing this skill gap by expanding its training, certification and enablement programs. Three new specialist certifications and related training courses have been designed to progressively build and validate expertise in business architecture:

  • Cisco Business Architecture Analyst Certification
    • Equips professionals with a general awareness of business architecture principles and provides a methodology for uncovering a company’s business goals. These desired outcomes could then be bridged to the technology solutions required to achieve them, thus building credibility and rapport with customers or key internal stakeholders.
  • Cisco Business Architecture Specialist Certification
    • Builds on the foundational skills and knowledge assessed at the Analyst level with a focus on change management and the creation of a customized transformation roadmap.
  • Cisco Business Architecture Practitioner Certification
    • Expands upon the Specialist level by validating a candidate’s mastery in leveraging tools, methodologies and best practices to bridge IT solutions with the organization’s business goals. Participants will be assessed for their ability to create and map the customer engagement journey to deliver tangible business outcomes and value.

Training courses supporting each of these certifications, respectively, include:

  • Adopting the Cisco Business Architecture Approach
  • Applying Cisco Business Architecture Techniques
  • Mastering the Cisco Business Architecture Discipline

These new offerings broaden Cisco’s Business Transformation portfolio initiatives, launched in April 2017, with the introduction of the Customer Success Manager certification. Cisco continues to develop a pipeline of additional training and certifications that will further advance skills in this area.

Why architecture students must learn about cultural diversity

The inclusion of cultural diversity in design has a pivotal role to play in Architecture. Architects are problem solvers who create safe spaces according to people’s needs. The new trend is to create an environment suitable for diverse cultures and not just for a specific group of people. A culturally diverse space design adapts to evolving cultural requirements. Cultures change with time; for example, the development of office spaces within homes after the pandemic. Architecture students, therefore, need to understand the importance of cultural diversity.

Architecture is the mirror that reflects society and culture. Exposing students to diverse design philosophies and building practices enriches their learning experience and helps them develop cultural sensitivity to create designs that consider the local context, values, and beliefs of the community they serve. This also leads to innovation, as students experiment with new forms and technologies while applying diverse architectural approaches to their work.


In the Indian context, we have diverse design traditions such as the Chettinad, the Mughal, the Nagara, and Colonial styles of architecture. These are rooted in a particular era’s culture, beliefs and values. Studying all this helps students establish a link between past and present and also gain insights into how construction materials and spatial arrangements were influenced by culture.

Creating an environment for discussion and learning from diverse perspectives is critical for architecture education. This involves inviting guest faculty and architecture experts to talk about cultural diversity, setting up a design studio for projects, organising mandatory case studies and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration for architecture students to interact with departments like history, anthropology, sociology and others.


The most significant benefit is creating cultural awareness and sensitivity, which help students design viable spaces according to the community’s needs. Students also learn to be flexible in their approach as they have to adapt to specific requirements. Finally students also learn to engage with the community that they are serving as architects and to understand, respect and value differences.

At Expo 2020 Dubai, Cisco announced the launch of a UAE-wide competition for university students. ‘Power the Future: The Cisco Sustainability Challenge’ invites young entrepreneurs and environmental advocates to share how technology can accelerate the sustainability agenda and measure its impact.

In close alignment with the UAE’s vision to build an innovative, sustainable and green future, Cisco is encouraging students to provide insights into the biggest challenges facing the region. Each participant must identify a challenge, design a solution which leverages technology, and highlight clear impact – focusing on one of four themes:

  • Sustainable Utilities
  • Sustainable Citizen Services and Governance

Following the development of a prototype solution, the top 5 innovators will once again present to the jury, detailing their operating model, architecture of the solution and financial analysis.
