A relative newcomer, Genesis has been staking its claim in the luxury arena with bold designs and fresh takes on traditional segments. The South Korean automaker—it's the luxury arm of Hyundai—launched its first nameplate with the full-size G90 in 2017 and impressed us right out of the gate, winning a comparison test on the strength of its well-appointed cabin and high-tech features.

Since then, Genesis has fleshed out its lineup with a stable of sedans and crossovers. The G70 sport sedan won our 2019 Car of the Year, and the GV70 compact SUV took home our Golden Calipers as the 2022 SUV of the Year. Sales have reflected the brand's overall excellence, as well; Genesis managed to move nearly 50,000 units in 2021—more than double its previous best and more than a third as many as Cadillac despite that brand's century-plus head start. The G90, however, had merely been face-lifted since it arrived. It remained a strong value in terms of features and comfort but lacked the stateliness of newer versions of long-running nameplates.

Now, the 2023 Genesis G90 is all-new and ready to challenge the full-size luxury sedan establishment once more, boasting a fresh exterior design, gorgeous interior, and new mild hybrid drivetrain.

A Striking Sedan

We were intrigued by the 2023 G90 as soon as the first images of the new luxury sedan emerged online. Genesis calls its design language "athletic elegance," which is apparent in its mixture of organic and straight lines. Additionally, Genesis uses a two-line graphic for the LED headlights and twin taillight bars to deliver the G90 instantly recognizable front and rear visages; we particularly like how the lighting elements flow into the wheel wells and reappear just ahead of each front door.

The signature "crest grille" mimics the shape of the shield at the center of the Genesis logo, a motif also reflected in the shape of the exhaust finishers. Both the grille and available 21-inch wheels make use of a layered design, with tiers of texture for additional nuance and depth. The result is a vastly more elegant car than the outgoing model, with the style and presence necessary to sit at the top of the Genesis lineup.

First-Class Cabin

The improvements extend to the G90's interior, which both looks and feels the part of a contemporary luxury flagship. High-quality leathers, metals, and other trim materials are on display, while exposed plastics are few and far between. Twin 12.3-inch displays include a fully digital instrument cluster that's configurable to a variety of styles, as well as a main infotainment display with gorgeous graphics and quick responses to inputs. However, scrolling through the horizontally aligned thumbnails can get frustrating if a menu item happens to be at the end of the list. Otherwise, the interior layout is very user friendly for the driver.

Unfortunately, buyers who only drive their G90 won't experience one of its finest points, the incredible back seat. Like other executive sedans from the long-benchmarked German and Japanese brands, Genesis generously equips its second row. Features include heated, massaging, and ventilated seats; the best spot in the entire car is the passenger-side rear seat, which can be fully reclined and offers a motorized leg rest. The front passenger seat folds away, as well, to open enough space for most adults to stretch out and wiggle the tips of their toes. Button-activated power soft-closing front and rear doors add to the overall feeling of opulence.

G90 variants equipped with this feature also receive a Chauffeur mode, which alters suspension damping for maximum comfort for rear passengers. When we arrived in Miami, Genesis sent a driver in a G90 to pick us up from the airport. With all the rear shades up to block out the hot Florida sun, the ventilated seats activated, and a massage cranking away, this felt like a serious upgrade from flying coach. All these features can be controlled via a display on the rear middle armrest. This small screen is easy to navigate and is positioned next to a large volume knob. Genesis told us its home market in South Korea will take advantage of this setup at a much higher rate than U.S. consumers will, as even wealthy Americans tend to drive their own cars.

First Drive Impressions

Since most American owners will find themselves in the driver's seat, the G90's road manners really matter. Fortunately, Genesis offers two powerful drivetrain options that provide ample grunt to haul around this large sedan and its occupants. The base engine is Genesis' familiar 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 producing 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. The top-spec car that we drove makes use of an upgraded version of that powerplant. Genesis equips the most powerful drivetrain option with an electric supercharger powered by a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Total output increases to 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque, with the torque curve improving dramatically because the electrically driven supercharger doesn't need to be spun by the engine itself. In fact, its battery is recharged via brake-based regeneration.

On the road, this engine is responsive yet relaxed. The unstressed nature of the drivetrain lends itself to an overwhelmingly calm driving experience. Shifts are smooth and fade into the background as the eight-speed automatic transmission, standard for both engines, shuffles through gears. All-wheel drive is standard on all G90s, as well. If you end up in a hurry, the big sedan feels brisk from a standstill. There's no sporty character whatsoever, but that speaks to the focus Genesis had in making this sedan feel as luxurious as possible. That's evident in the unobtrusive engine stop/start feature, as well. However, even when the V-6 is actively idling, it's nearly imperceptible; the engine turns at just 500 rpm when the G90 is stationary.

On our top-trim test car, adaptive air suspension with adjustable ride height gives the G90 a cushy feel over most road surfaces. When the pavement gets gnarly, the electronically controlled multilink system does a great job of blunting the impact of bumps or ruts. The steering is numb, as one might expect from a car like this, but it's accurate and rear-wheel steering provides uncanny nimbleness in parking lots.

Highway stability was excellent, too, and the G90 simply crushed miles of Florida's arrow-straight highways. Sport mode firms everything up, most notably adding heft to the steering, but had little effect on the way the G90 comported itself. Ultimately we preferred Comfort mode for the majority of our test drive, because of course.

We did find a couple roads and as many freeway ramps as possible with enough curves to get a sense of the G90's handling. Its body, which is said to be 12 percent more rigid than the outgoing G90's, felt well-controlled as we slithered through the bends. Even with the car softened in Chauffeur mode, our rear passenger reported feeling totally at ease during brisk runs onto the highway outside of Miami Beach. It's truly impressive the progress made to this flagship in just one generation.

High-Tech Appointments

The G90 comes equipped with the latest versions of almost all of Genesis' technology. Genesis partnered with Apple and Samsung to allow drivers to use their phones as a remote key. Seven ultra-wideband sensors allow the car to detect a mobile device as one approaches the G90, triggering the greeting procedure that includes a light show and extending door handles. A total of four digital keys can be active at one time, and the vehicle's owner can share keys with friends and family on demand with the Genesis Connected Services app. This same software allows the G90 to perform functions like flashing its lights, honking its horn, and starting or stopping the engine, as well. For this test drive, Genesis sent us a digital key via text message. We added it to our Apple Wallet and had no issues using it to lock, unlock, and start the car throughout the day. Two traditional key fobs are included with every G90, but it was surprisingly easy to get used to simply using your phone instead.

Genesis equips all versions of the G90 with a Bang & Olufsen sound system. Base models receive a 15-speaker setup, while top-trim versions have a premium 23-speaker arrangement. One of the car's party tricks is a configurable soundscape that uses seven microphones in the cabin to help emulate large and small spaces, such s Boston Symphony Hall or a living room.

A plethora of safety features are also included with every G90. Genesis equips the latest versions of its highway driving assist semi-autonomous technology, hands-on detection warning, advanced rear occupant alert, forward collision avoidance assist, reverse collision avoidance assist, and remote smart parking assist on the entire range.

Buyers may miss a few features they expect on a pricey luxury sedan, though. Genesis's Face Connect facial recognition, which is available on the GV60 electric crossover, is not being offered on the 2023 G90. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are absent, as well. When pressed, a representative from Genesis said this was done because the wired versions of these phone connectivity systems are so much more responsive and stable than their cord-free alternatives, but we think it should be up to the buyer to choose how they connect their device to the car. Wireless charging, on the other hand, is available in both the front and second rows. Otherwise, the G90 is as tech laden as flagship vehicles come, especially as over-the-air updates are standard for all G90 models and included for the entire lifetime of the car, even as it passes to new owners.

Should I Buy a Genesis G90?

Historically, the G90 was something of a value play within the full-size luxury sedan segment. It offered impressive materials and comfort at a far lower price than the competition. That's changed some with this new generation. The 2022 G90 started at $74,950; the base 2023 G90 3.5T AWD starts at $89,495. The version we drove, which Genesis calls the G90 3.5T E-SC AWD, starts at $99,795. As equipped, our car stickered at $100,370, factoring in the $575 metallic Saville Silver paint. Matte paint colors add $1,500.

That pricing puts the G90 above the 2022 BMW 740i, which starts at $87,795, as well as the 2022 Lexus LS500, which starts at $77,175. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class starts at $112,150, however, which still makes a fully loaded G90 a deal in comparison.

Although the Genesis G90 doesn't exhibit better, more engaging driving dynamics than most of its rivals, the South Korean luxury automaker's hyperfocus on luxury and interior appointments make this sedan stand out in its segment, and it's leaps and bounds ahead of the first-generation model in terms of refinement, opulence, and—most crucially—presence. With incredible attention paid to the smallest details, Genesis just may have another winner on its hands.

Google is finally bringing the Street View feature to India. People will now be able to explore landmarks while sitting at home, and virtually experience any place or restaurant. Google has announced the launch of its Street View experience in India in partnership with Genesys International, an advanced mapping solutions company, and Tech Mahindra, a leading provider of digital transformation, consulting, and business re-engineering services and solutions.

Starting today, the new Street View feature is available on Google Maps, but only in Bangalore on a pilot basis. Google told India Today Tech that the feature will then be released to Hyderabad and later in Kolkata. Shortly after that, the Street View will be rolled out to more cities in India, including Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Vadodara, Ahmednagar, and Amritsar.

It is pretty easy to access this feature. One just needs to open the Google Maps app, type the name of the location and search for it. There will be an icon at the bottom of the screen, just tap on it to get a Street View look. You will get to know the local cafes, and cultural hotspots or anyone check out the local neighborhood. "Street View will help people navigate and explore new corners of the country and the world in a more visual and accurate way, enabling them to fully experience what it’s like to be in these places, right from their phone or computer," the company said.

Google is promising to roll out the Street View feature to more than 50 cities by the end of 2022. In addition to this, the company has also partnered with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to provide air quality information on Google Maps.

Performance improvement expert David M. Williams, PhD, shares how to find and deploy meaningful benchmarks that contribute to overall system improvement

David M. Williams, PhD, senior improvement advisor of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and lead faculty for the Improvement Advisor Professional Development Program.

FirstWatch, supported by Prodigy EMS, has run a web series titled “Conversations that Matter” (CTM) for nearly two years, and over time it has had many discussions, using an open mic Zoom format, with many great industry thought leaders. At a accurate session, I was joined by David M. Williams, PhD, senior improvement advisor of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and lead faculty for the Improvement Advisor Professional Development Program; and Mike Taigman, improvement guide for FirstWatch, to benchmark our industry benchmarks.

The collective force of Taigman and Williams are the genesis of performance improvement EMS, and the latest CTM encourages all to find and deploy benchmarks that are meaningful and contribute to overall system improvement.

The premise for the session was based on the original thoughts of Jack Stout, the father of high-performance EMS, who used to encourage EMS leaders to compare their performance to the best systems in the country. He said, “If you only compare to the systems in your area, how will you know if you’re not just the cream of the crap?” In this interactive session, Williams, who has applied the science of improvement worldwide, shared his thoughts.

Q. What is benchmarking, and when may it be helpful?”

Williams: The term benchmarking comes from land surveying and refers to a marker of a previously determined position, which can be used to set up a new position. A popular book by Robert Camp defines benchmarking as “the process of identifying and learning from best practices or best performance from any industry to identify potential changes for improvement.” Back in the 1990s, EMS systems expert Jack Stout wrote an article in the Journal of Emergency Medical Services advocating for the practice of benchmarking. He made the case that benchmarking offered two opportunities:

  1. It helped you see where your results compared with peers
  2. It helped to find exemplars who we can go learn from

Stout described these as lateral benchmarking and best practice benchmarking. Cares, AIMHI, Press Gainey and Viszient are all examples of lateral benchmarking. Michael Dell cautioned that these can be useful, but what if the benchmark isn’t the best? The Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Research and Development process is an example of best practice benchmarking: it focuses on finding systems that have exemplar performance in an area and learning about the causal mechanisms (why something works well) more than the what. They develop a prototype to test and replicate results.

Q. Leaders believe that they don't want to "reinvent the wheel" and that they should look for the best practice and copy that. You teach people to look for the best and be cautious that replicating results isn't easy, and often the best answer isn't known.

Williams: In best practice benchmarking, we want to go learn from the place where leaders are producing the best results. In healthcare, there are examples all over the place of systems able to nearly eliminate infections, medication errors, etc. These are the places we want to learn from. Most leaders do not want to waste time. They want to get results. If someone is getting the results, we should go learn from them. Where this often fails, is in two places:

  1. The system getting the results may not fully appreciate the key drivers that are contributing to their results – the causal mechanisms.
  2. Leaders try to copy the solution, which very often does not reproduce the results when installed in a different context and with leaders who were not involved in developing the changes.

What’s missing is a method for learning in a structured way. I use an approach developed using the Model for Improvement which creates the conditions for leaders to learn, extract key characteristics, and set them up to test them at home to develop an adapted version that works in your context and with your team. A good example of this is sudden cardiac arrest and Seattle. There are decades of evidence better survival is possible. Copying the system’s approach to another system is not likely to replicate the results. We do have examples of a host of communities that extracted the key drivers and then worked to develop their contextualized approach and achieved similar results over time.

Q. You have been an EMS consultant worldwide and an advisor to school systems, large health systems, and national governments in the United Kingdom, Europe and the Middle East. What themes do you see across your work in trying to make a large-scale improvement?

Williams: Common positive themes include motivated professionals, who want to do their best work, and who want to help people have positive outcomes. Common issues include:

  • Second and third generation folks who grew up in the system of today with limited knowledge of the foundations of EMS systems … many don’t know why things are the way they are
  • Wide variation, but mostly limited appreciation of evidence-based (research) and best practice
  • Stuck in status quo mental models (speed, transport, etc.)
  • Data-saturation with limited measurement knowledge
  • Lots of best effort and reactionary practice and no method for problem-solving to results
  • Groupthink that every EMS system is unique and getting caught in the complexity of their system … the fundamentals are often their biggest lever for design or redesign.

Q. You have been working on a book with two of the biggest names in quality. The book is built on improvement science and includes five activities for leaders as a method to pursue organizational excellence. How is this method unique, and what does it enable leaders to do differently?

Williams: Quality improvement starts at and is executed at the project level. We find systems that aren’t doing what we want them to do, and we design or redesign them to get the results we want. Many organizations and industries have adopted the Model for Improvement as their method for doing projects and a segment of those folks can execute constantly to get results.

Many leaders get fired up by mastering a method to get project results and want to expand that to their method for leading their organization. Sometimes this starts with organizations that are struggling and need to work their way out and sometimes this starts with organizations that are benchmarking well but know they can do better. Our method, Quality as an Organizational Strategy (QOS), is built on 100-plus years of quality and has been used by several organizations that have sought and been awarded the Malcolm Baldrige Award. QOS uniquely combines five leadership activities to create a system of improvement:

  1. Create clarity about the need the organization is here on earth to fulfill, then align purpose and vision, and develop practical tenants or values for how they will run.
  2. Learn how to understand and map the organization as a system of linked, inter-dependent processes and develop a vector of measures that serve as the vital signs.
  3. Develop a system for gathering information from the community, the industry, the customers and partners that is collected and analyzed to support learning and change.
  4. Use a planning process where a family of inputs is reviewed, and a method helps sort the vital few opportunities for impact. Leaders charter these for improvement projects.
  5. Learn and use rigorous improvement methods to design and redesign the organization and get results.

The process is not easy, but those that embark on the journey describe it as transformational. Leaders learn about their organizations in ways they had not before; they reveal lots of opportunities for improvement and prioritize tackling the big rocks; and they finally have a method for learning, problem-solving and getting results.

Q. This sounds like a lot. How do you start this with organizations? This sounds very different than the traditional expert model consulting journey we see in EMS where a consultant studies the system and generates the report.

Williams: There are many approaches to consulting. My approach blends bringing a foundation of improvement science – systems, variation, learning and problem solving, people – and the method of Quality as an Organizational Strategy with the local expertise of the leadership team of any kind of organization. I usually start light with a co-produced mini-learning experience with a leadership team to consider their purpose, review their current results and how successful they are at fixing problems, and then pick a handful of projects to start improving. It’s a little engagement at first, built so everyone learns. Leaders decide from there if they are ready to change.

Linda Golden could live anywhere, especially with her acumen for building things from the ground up. But she’s stayed firmly planted in southeast Fort Wayne.

It’s where she grew up. It’s who she is. In conversation, she casually calls it “southeast.” When it came time to expand the headquarters of her family business, it only made sense to pour a foundation there.

“I’ve always lived and worked in southeast. I was raised in southeast. I love southeast Fort Wayne. That’s a natural passion for me,” she said.

LegacyOne Real Estate & Contracting Inc., the business Golden launched in 2015 with her son, Matthew Golden, began construction in May on a 6,000-square-foot building near Southtown Crossing next to Menards.

The development, Legacy Office Centre, is expected to have four more buildings on the 5-acre property. It will serve, in part, as affordable space for startup businesses to rent. Linda Golden said she hopes the center will drive more business to the area.

Making a home

Golden also wants to see more Black families own homes.

Nationally, 72% of whites own homes compared with 43% of Blacks, according to the National Association of Realtors’ 2022 Snapshot of Race and Home Buying in America.

And home ownership among Blacks in Fort Wayne is around 35%, Golden said, putting it below the national average. Indiana’s average is 38%, according to the Realtors’ association.

“We’re just so far behind,” she said. “It puts us behind having generational wealth to pass on to our children, or to be able to help our children go to college. It just puts us so far behind.”

Finding ways to close the gap has started with learning about what keeps the gap from closing, and that begins with providing resources, Golden said.

She is part of The Realtist Association of Northeast Indiana, or RANI, which held a “Black Homeownership, Everybody Wins’’ forum on June 23 at the Impact Center. The event focused on buying homes and building wealth.

At the forum, Golden learned that many potential homebuyers assume they would be unable to buy a home, which keeps them from even trying.

“There appears to be a disconnect between the Black community and the banking community,” she said. “RANI is to help to facilitate those relationships and to deliver the community access in what could be called a nonthreatening environment.”

Bankers who attended the forum were also members of RANI and interested in bridging that gap by speaking with individuals and answering questions. The event was “very, very well received,” and others will be scheduled, Golden said.

“I know the wealth piece is there for Black families … I know wealth is in the home,” she said. “The homes I’ve sold in southeast in the last few years with the housing market, I’ve seen families leave with checks of $75,000, $100,000. That money, they can go buy another home, start a business, pay off debt. There’s a myriad of things they can do. So that’s why it’s my goal to get more Black families in homeownership.”

In the beginning

Golden’s goal didn’t begin with real estate. It began in the 1980s when she was volunteering at Christ Temple Apostolic Church, where she attended.

“Almost every time the church doors were open, somebody was coming in there looking for help – either with their addiction issues or homelessness or whatever,” she said. “We had nothing in place at that time to serve them.”

A desire to meet those needs evolved into a housing project, a clothing bank and a 12-step program.

“The people would come once a week or whatever, but we were sending them back into the same environment,” she said. “That got me to thinking, ‘We need them longer than them just coming in for a meeting once a week.’ ”

From that, Genesis Outreach began. Genesis is a nonprofit that offers rehabilitation and housing programs for the unhoused and chemically dependent populations of Fort Wayne. It was founded in 1988, according to

Albert Brownlee worked at Genesis with Golden for 11 years. He credits her for starting his career.

Brownlee met Golden when he attended Memorial Park Middle School, where she was a school administrator. They went to the same church, and he was close friends with her sons.

It was Golden who prompted Brownlee to consider a career change in 2000 when there was a job opening at Genesis. Brownlee was a bail commissioner, working in the Allen County Superior Courts pretrial diversion program. Golden asked if he’d ever considered working in community development and affordable housing.

“I said, ‘Absolutely not,’ ” he said, with a laugh. “Her response was, ‘I think this will be a good space for you.’ I credit Linda with really creating what I call the servant leader in me.”

Brownlee started as a project coordinator at Genesis Outreach and took on more responsibilities while working under Golden, who was CEO of Genesis until she retired in 2011. Brownlee, who served as CEO through 2019, now works in Indianapolis but remains on the board as an executive consultant for Genesis.

Although Golden is driven, she also is compassionate, Brownlee said.

“Linda leads with her heart,” he said. “People often mistake that she has this very strong, external presence but she’s one of the sweetest, most giving people I’ve ever met.”

He sees Golden as a community giant, based on her interest in seeing people’s lives change. She wants to see the community be its best, especially when it comes to addiction or housing concerns in southeast Fort Wayne, he said.

Time, talent, treasure

Brownlee isn’t the only person who respects and appreciates Golden. City Councilwoman Sharon Tucker, D-6th, echoed his sentiments.

“Have you ever encountered a quiet, powerful giant who is not interested in having the spotlight shine but making sure there is a spotlight?” Tucker said. “Then you would have met Linda.”

Tucker said Golden has given her “time, talent and treasure” to make sure the southeast community gets the development it needs. That includes the new location Golden chose for her business.

“She does all of that with a humble heart and a willingness to seek answers for herself, her community and anybody who is willing to participate,” Tucker said.

All of the things Golden stands for publicly, she exhibits privately with her family, said her son Matthew Golden, the second of four children.

“She made sure we were playing outside, riding bikes, going through the cornfields, would have treasure hunts,” he said. “I had an awesome life, I really did.”

Matthew Golden said he’s worked with and for his parents since he was old enough to help.

At age 13, he started a lawn mowing company with his cousins and eventually made enough money to buy a pickup truck. Every Saturday, Matthew Golden’s dad, Sylvester Golden, would drive them around to mow.

“Mom instilled that dedication part,” he said. “And Dad instilled that, ‘You gotta work. You gotta get your hands dirty’ part. And combine the two, I’ve always worked.”

Devotion to the community was taught in the Golden home as well. Matthew Golden remembers going to the first Genesis shelter as an early teen.

“I had the task of assembling all of the bunk beds,” he said. “From day one, that was our life. Her showing us to serve the community, that’s what we did every day.”

After 45 years of marriage to Linda, Sylvester Golden died on May 20. But that didn’t stop her from continuing the work.

“I call it transitioning, I’ve learned to find my way without him here,” she said. “One thing is a blessing to me is I do have a large family. … I’m not alone, and that means a lot right there.”

With Linda Golden’s four children and 15 grandchildren, there’s always something going on. And the grandchildren regularly visit her home.

The Goldens began taking annual vacations to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, when the children were young. Except for when the theme park was shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, the family hasn’t missed a year.

“I don’t have a favorite character,” Linda Golden said. “I just like being there, being there with my family. They call it magical and in a lot of ways it is. It’s a whole other world.”

But Golden also still finds the magic in southeast Fort Wayne, the place she calls her heart and home.

She wants to reach out to help others because she’s been in a broken place before. When her family was very young, her self-employed husband broke his leg and was unable to work for nine months.

“We lost everything during that time,” she said. “We lost our house, we lost our car. So I’ve been here. I’m not talking to anybody from a place of not knowing. I can show them it’s not the end of the world. It can be a new beginning.”

Google Maps on Wednesday announced a slate of new partnerships in India with local authorities and organisations. These partnerships aim to bring helpful features customised to the unique and diverse needs of people in the country. The announcements are in line with Google’s focus on building helpful maps that offer a more visual and accurate navigation and exploration experience, and democratise critical and useful location-based information to help communities.

Google has additionally partnered with traffic authorities and aggregators to help people across eight cities in India, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Gurgaon, Bangalore, and Agra, helping them make informed travel decisions and avoid congestion zones with information on road closures and incidents.

Moreover, Google has joined hands with local entities to help India achieve its climate action goals and reduce carbon footprint. Till date, it has collaborated with 250 NGOs, 60 Universities, 30 government agencies, and 15 research organisations who have used Google’s geospatial products to find actionable insights on climate change.
