Cybercloud Platform, an indigenous VMware cloud service provider, was recently recognised with VMware Cloud Checked status.

VMware Cloud Provider Programme Manager, sub-Saharan Africa, Dave Funnell, who announced the new feat, explained that, “it means when you see the VMware Cloud Checked logo, you know you can easily access the full set of capabilities of VMware’s Cloud Infrastructure. Get the ultimate in cloud choice through flexible and interoperable infrastructure, from the data center to the cloud. Support all your apps – from existing to cloud-native to SaaS – across private, public and hybrid clouds using services displaying the VMware Cloud Checked logo.”

The Head, Cybercloud Business, Miss. Laurel Onumonu, who spoke at the just concluded Zenith Tech Fair, in Lagos, said featuring the VMware Cloud Checked logo in any marketing campaigns and content signals to customers and prospects that foundational cloud technologies and services are based on VMware Cloud Infrastructure.

VMware is the global leader in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology.
According to Onumonu, “We have domesticated VMware services locally and organizations can be rest assured of their data security, integrity and availability. We are aware of the Data Sovereignty Policy of the Federal Government hence we built a VMware Checked Cloud Platform situated in a Tier 3 Certified Data Centre. We are proud to say that CyberCLOUD offers true first Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) services in Nigeria.

“Recently, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) expressed readiness to comply with full implementation of this provision in the Nigerian setting. This means that sensitive financial and commercial data will no longer be hosted abroad.

Killexams : Modernizing VMware Data Protection

App Modernization

Veritas is focused on keeping applications protected, available and performant. Underlying infrastructure has shifted over the years and Veritas has kept pace by being software-defined and application-focused. While stateful data continues to be protected by NetBackup, we are developing new solutions for native integration for Kubernetes data protection with VMware.

Data Protection for the MultiCloud Enterprise

Adopting public clouds and deploying private clouds across all infrastructures is simple and intuitive with VMware and Veritas. NetBackup is certified for VMware vSAN and VMware Cloud on AWS, with day-one support for new versions. And it’s engineered to deliver the control you need, providing instant access to virtual machines.

Intrinsic Security

Reliable data protection remains as crucial as ever to protect against data corruption, human error and malicious threats such as ransomware. VMware and Veritas help customers build a strong defensive line with VMware Workspace ONE and Carbon Black, coupled with NetBackup to manage and protect hundreds of thousands of VMs.

Killexams : Public Cloud Giants Turn Their Attention To Private Clouds

Public cloud revenue is up across the big six cloud giants. Alibaba, Amazon, Baidu, Google, Microsoft and Tencent all had solid double-digit to spectacular triple-digit revenue growth from Q2 2017 to Q2 2018. Tencent almost tripled its public cloud revenue year-over-year*, while Alibaba , Google and Microsoft all roughly doubled their public cloud revenue. Baidu reported a 64% increase and Amazon was up about 50%. Meanwhile, enterprise stalwart IBM reported its cloud revenue up 18%, with Oracle estimated to be in similar shape. (Huawei doesn’t report its cloud revenues.)

How can public cloud giants sustain their growth? Part of the answer appears to be hijacking core enterprise applications away from VMware during digital transformation using private cloud offerings.

Private Cloud Strategies & Products

All the cloud giants except Amazon now have private cloud strategies and products in place:

Alibaba Cloud Apsara Stack Enterprise

Alibaba Cloud introduced Apsara Stack Enterprise V3.0 a few weeks ago (V1.0 shipped in 2015). Alibaba says that Apsara Stack is a “full-stack” on prem private cloud solution for mid- to large-sized businesses. Alibaba says that its Apsara Stack is based on the same underlying proprietary cloud native hyperscale architecture as Alibaba Cloud; it labels Apsara Stack as an “extension” of its public cloud. Alibaba says that Apsara can scale to connect millions of servers. Alibaba initially focused Apsara Stack on IaaS and big data and has recently focused on financial applications. It is not very clear how Alibaba deploys Apsara Stack at customer sites, but it looks like a professional services style engagement with Alibaba.

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

AWS suggests assembling a bag of parts (its modus operandi), starting with its Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) service as a base. Then add a Hardware Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection between AWS and a private data center. At this point, AWS suggests combining VPC with VMware Cloud on AWS, which will enable VMware’s vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), Virtual SAN (vSAN) and its NSX network virtualization platform. You’ll need a cloud services architect and some other talented IT folks to help you assemble the parts and connect it to your existing virtualized on prem infrastructure.

But rolling your own infrastructure to migrate VMs between private and cloud infrastructure really isn’t a modern private cloud, even though the “Virtual Private Cloud” label says the right words.

Baidu Cloud ABC-STACK

A large part of Baidu’s most exact earnings call was dedicated to enabling artificial intelligence. Baidu’s hybrid cloud platform is ABC-STACK (AI, Big Data, Cloud Computing), which supports Baidu’s PaddlePaddle and other major AI development frameworks. A rack-sized, all-in-one, 64-GPU “ABC server” is the on prem hardware delivery unit for the private cloud component of ABC-STACK. Up to 1,000 ABC servers can be clustered together. Baidu targets ABC-STACK at large organizations with huge data lakes and matching AI budgets.

Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) On-Prem

Google is also making big bets in AI and in container-based microservices. A few weeks ago, Google announced at its Cloud Next ’18 conference that Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) On-Prem is in alpha availability, with beta availability coming later this year. GKE On-Prem will be Google’s private cloud software solution. Google promises “a quick and simple install and upgrade experience that’s validated and tested by Google,” but target customers will want to invest in refactoring their applications into containerized microservices. If you are unsure what that means or how much budget that takes, you’ll want to pass on GKE ON-Prem, at least for the next year or two.

Huawei FusionCloud Private Cloud Solution

Huawei Cloud is a key public cloud partner of China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Orange and Telefonica. It has launched public cloud services for its telecom partners in China, Europe and Latin America. Huawei’s FusionCloud Private Cloud Solution is based on Huawei’s FusionSphere OpenStack distribution using the KVM virtualization engine. Huawei has hardened its commercial OpenStack release for enterprise-grade maintenance, security and reliability. But OpenStack deployment is still complex.

IBM Cloud Private

IBM Cloud Private for data is a Kubernetes-based container platform. It is in the same class as Google’s solution – for customers who make the investment to architect their application using microservices. IBM considers enterprise AI its key competitive advantage and wants to enable analytics and artificial intelligence in a hybrid cloud usage model. IBM says its Cloud Garage Service will help enterprise IT shops modernize development and deployment practices for IBM Cloud Private.

For contrast, IBM Cloud for SAP is intended to do the opposite: migrate local legacy SAP applications into SAP Cloud Platform private edition running on IBM Cloud.

Microsoft Azure Stack

Microsoft redesigned its Azure public cloud code to implement its Azure Stack private cloud. Azure Stack is a subset of Azure designed to run on the smallest set of hardware – four dual-socket Xeon servers (scaling to fill each rack) plus a fifth management server. Azure and Azure Stack use the same development and management tools for strict consistency across private and public Azure Cloud deployments. Azure Stack is a combined hardware and software solution delivered in half- and full-rack solutions by several server OEMs (Avanade, Cisco Systems, Dell EMC, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Huawei, Lenovo and Terra).

Microsoft targets Azure Stack at edge of network and disconnected solutions, as well as cloud applications that meet specific regulatory requirements.

Oracle Cloud at Customer

Oracle Cloud at Customer is fully managed by Oracle. Oracle links Oracle Cloud and Oracle Cloud at Customer via SaaS, PaaS and IaaS integration. Oracle Private Cloud Appliance (PCA) is a scalable hardware IaaS platform with two to 25 dual-socket Intel Xeon compute nodes per rack. Oracle is focused on migrating customers’ VMware vSphere virtual machines to its PCA.

Oracle Cloud at Customer appears to be a turnkey VM “lift-and-shift” solution, unlike AWS’s offering, for customers trying to avoid the complexity of assembling a virtualized hybrid environment themselves.

Tencent Cloud TStack Solution

Tencent Cloud’s TStack Solution is based on OpenStack. TStack Solution supports the KVM and QEMU hypervisors, VMware’s ESXi bare metal hypervisor and Docker containers. Tencent says that its TStack Solution is a loosely coupled architecture, designed for independent deployment and has integrated cloud management capabilities. Like Huawei, Tencent is trying to simplify OpenStack deployment.

Killexams : VMware Details its Tanzu/Kubernetes Strategy after Pivotal Merger

After acquiring Pivotal at the end of last year, VMware has detailed in a exact webinar how it will go about fulfilling its strategy aimed to help customers build their apps, run them using Kubernetes, and manage them from a single control plane.

When VMware announced its intention to acquire the Kubernetes-centered cloud platform and service provider Pivotal in August 2019, VMware had just introduced its VMware Tanzu strategy. While VMware clarified from the outset that Pivotal was going to be an integral part of its new strategy, no details were provided concerning how Pivotal products and VMware products will coexist.

In the webinar, VMware product vice-president Craig McLuckie stated Pivotal Application Service (PAS) on Kubernetes is a top priority and will receive continued support. PAS on K8s is currently in alpha and will reach GA by the end of the year. Additionally, PAS development will include extending support for Kubernetes on Windows, already in version 2.9, scheduled for Q1 2020. Among additional new features in PAS 2.9 are improved configuration of graceful shutdown, access to high-level metrics in Apps Manager, and more.

On a similar note, McLuckie also confirmed VMware's commitment to continuing the support of BOSH, an open-source project aiming to unify release, deployment, and management of cloud applications over hundreds of VMs. In particular, VMware will focus on BOSH automated cluster and OS lifecycle management.

The existing Pivotal Container Service (PKS), also known as VMware Enterprise PKS, will get a new release, PKS 1.7, in Q1 2020. This will include additional monitoring metrics, improved upgrade and configurations, and Windows container support in beta.

One of the major goals VMware will be pursuing is providing an integrated control plane to manage both VMs and K8s in a unified way:

We made an important decision in the last few months which was that, in order to make this experience complete, we really wanted to containerise the control plane, so that it actually has the ability to run on Kubernetes, and to effectively remove the need for a discrete cluster of virtual machines off to the side. This ultimately brings considerably reduced operational complexity, potentially a smaller footprint, easier to adopt at a team level'.

Several other remarks worth highlighting referred to the convergence of the VM and K8s worlds. With the acquisition of Pivotal, VMware has two different K8s focused domains: one in Enterprise PKS, and the other is vSphere, which will integrate K8s through Tanzu K8s Grid. According to McLuckie, those two streams will converge in a non-disruptive way, and all Enterprise PKS customers will be entitled to Tanzu K8s Grid. Similarly, VMware will aim to make PAS on VMs and PAS on K8s to level up in terms of available capabilities, so both platforms receive the same treatment.

As a final note, Ian Andrews, VMware marketing vice-president for modern apps, presented the VMware stack after Pivotal merger, showing their integration from the hypervisor level to the application level.

Recently announced, VMware vSphere+ and vSAN+ integrate Kubernetes with VMware virtualization technology to help transform on-premises workloads into SaaS-enabled infrastructure and simplify its management and evolution, says VMware.

On-premises deployments have a number of benefits, including locality, low latency, performance, and predictable cost. Where they fall short is usually on the side of flexibility and maintenance.

In many instances, customers’ vSphere environments are distributed across siloed locations, edge sites, and clouds leading to operational complexity and inefficient maintenance experience.

According to VMware, vSphere+ makes it possible to provision infrastructure on-premise with the same ease as is possible on the Cloud, for example by scaling services in and out based on demand. Central to vSphere+ is the integration between vCenter and the Cloud Console, which enables metadata collection and management in a centralized location.

This is made possible by vSAN+, which delivers vSAN storage services for on-premises deployments and represents the connection point between vCenter instances and the VMware Cloud for centralized management. Thanks to this connection, you can use higher-level services to access your on-premises as well as Cloud deployments, including admin, developer, and add-on services.

Admin services aim to simplify and streamline the overall management of the system, including for example lifecycle management to distribute and install updates; an inventory service to track all available resources such as clusters, hosts, VMs, and so on; an event viewer for alerts and other kinds of events; VM provisioning, to quickly create new VMs, and more.

Developer services, says VMware, bring the integration of vSphere with Kubernetes beyond what is available in VMware Tanzu, enabling the unification of VMs and Kubernetes containers. This means for example you can create VMs using Kubernetes commands and APIs, run containerized apps using a Kubernetes distribution integrated with vSphere, managing network connectivity for VMs and Kubernetes workloads, etc.

Finally, add-on services provide extended capabilities, such as VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery, a solution to protect and recover mission-critical applications, which will be available soon.

VMware says they have defined an incremental and non-disruptive way to adopt vSphere+ which does not require migrating or moving any vCenter instances, both for vSphere and vSphere Enterprise Plus customers.
