Oracle drills down on Fusion Sales

Six months ago, at Oracle Live, Oracle talked about its plans to bridge the sales and marketing gap with the help of AI and automation. During that event, Larry Ellison talked about how the CRM (or sales automation system) needs to evolve, arguing:

The sales automation system has value. It keeps track of your opportunities, keeps track of your contacts. It allows you to communicate with management and say, 'I expect these deals to close in the quarter.' It's really a management tool for individual salespeople and their bosses to make estimates: how many deals will close in the quarter, and figure out what revenues will look like in the quarter.

Now, that has value. But the sales system does not increase sales. It doesn't automate sales. It automates sales, forecasting and improves communication. But what we want to do is actually build systems that help you sell more.

To get to this point, Oracle started by creating a new way for marketing to generate qualified leads to send to Sales with the launch of Oracle Fusion Marketing. I'm not going to dive into the details of Fusion Marketing because Jon did a great job of that himself. But what happens once Sales gets those leads? Something needs to change to help them work with them - that's the concept at the heart of the release of Oracle Fusion Sales.

Removing the manual steps in the B2B process

At an Oracle Live event: The Future of CRM: Engineering Connected Sales Experiences, Rob Tarkoff, Executive VP & General Manager, Oracle Advertising and Customer Experience, talked about the need for a tighter hand-off between Marketing and Sales (and how rare that is today). For that to happen, a transformational approach to managing sellers is needed.

Tarkoff referenced an Oracle study of 200 sales professionals that found 86% want s
Sales and Marketing to work more closely, and 88% need the tools and technologies to make that happen. It's true that there are plenty of marketing technologies to help Marketing and a growing number of sales technologies to help Sales, but the integrations between the two are not always that ‘integrated’ or indeed useful.

Not only are sellers wary of the leads passed on by Marketing, but they are spending a lot of their time going in and out of different technologies to manage routine processes in addition to the work they need to do to work with prospective customers properly.

Next gen?

Oracle's answer to these challenges is Oracle Fusion Sales, dubbed “the next generation of CRM”.  So what does the next generation of CRM look like? Katrina Gosek, VP, Oracle CX Product Strategy & Marketing, took me through the details.

Gosek said that Fusion Sales shifts the CRM from a system of record to a tool that will help sellers sell more. It does this in a few ways.

First, a new user interface makes it much easier to see what's happening with an opportunity. If you're accustomed to the busy interface of Salesforce, then you might appreciate the simplicity of this one.

The opportunity screen provides a high-level look at all the data around this opportunity, from activity by the account to sales activities, contacts, products purchased, services, billing, and more. The Sales rep can drill down further if they want to see more detailed information in any particular area.

The left-hand side of the screen provides what Gosek calls “guided selling”. These are guided workflows based on best practices and past deals (or built from industry templates). Guided selling is a useful feature for new salespeople coming in to help them learn faster and smarter, but it's also useful for more seasoned salespeople.

As Gosek pointed out, sellers still struggle with a predictable path to success because the models are continually changing, the groups involved are changing, and there's no one right now to move forward. But data can help make the process easier.

Underlying Fusion Sales is data - data from existing deals and opportunities, as well as past deals. Leveraging AI, the application can bring forward the best recommendations that help sellers move the opportunity forward. So, for example, it can recommend the next step in the process, whether that's making a phone call or email, creating a quote, or scheduling a demo.

And then there's the automation that takes the mundane, manual processes away from the seller. For example, Zoom meetings can be launched from within the Fusion application, and all notes, transcripts, and replays are automatically added to the activity for that opportunity. If you make a phone call from within the application, that call and any call notes are added. Let's say you made a note to schedule a demo meeting for a specific date and time. The application guides the seller to schedule the meeting as a next step and automatically fills in as many of the details as possible based on information in the notes.

Another automation feature is the creation of quotes and proposals based on customer data and past deals. Gosek explained that historical deal data related to similar closed deals, similar price points, and the combination of products sold together is used to help automatically generate a proposal or quote that the seller can review and customize.

The AI provides an estimated closed win rate and can suggest changes to increase the potential of closing the deal.

Other features in Oracle Fusion Sales include:

  • Content recommendations - A native integration with the CMS helps surface the right content to share with an opportunity. The seller doesn't have to search for content, instead selecting from content recommended based on the past activity of the opportunity, similar opportunities, and other data.
  • Digital Sales Room - The seller can create a sales room for an opportunity that includes everything from recommended content to the contracts and quotes, meeting transcripts and demo replays, and so on. This information is automatically added to the salesroom; the seller requires no manual work.
  • Advanced Analytics - Oracle Fusion Analytics provides a wealth of data on sales and marketing performance, pulling in data from all parts of the organization, including sales, marketing, and service/support. Gosek said Fusion Analytics enables cross-engagement visibility to revenue leaders and pulls forward insights early enough in the quarter to support adjusting things sooner instead of reacting after the fact.

The overall goal of Fusion Sales is to deliver sellers one place to work that can perform many of the manual, mundane tasks and let the sellers focus on the work needed to win new sales. An action bar discretely hides additional functionality (like creating a deal room), so the seller isn’t overwhelmed with the interface. In addition, the tight integration with Fusion Marketing surfaces what Gosek called the 'conversation-ready' opportunities, so sellers spend their time with the best potential prospects.

My take

I've helped salespeople with their processes. I've worked in Salesforce and helped set up different sales technology. It's often a convoluted process, working through multiple tools with little to no integration. Oracle Fusion Sales changes that, and I was pleasantly surprised with the clean, easy-to-understand UI and the guided selling.

The digital sales room didn't surprise me. I recently covered Drift's new Deal Room, and the two are very similar. And there are others too. This sales experience is so late in coming, but at the same it, it's timely. As Gosek said, a lot more selling is happening virtually, and even when we get back to more in-person meetings, that digital experience isn't going away. These deal rooms will become much more popular and widely used, especially when the buying team is large and distributed.

I'm all for AI and automation if it allows us to focus our efforts on the more critical work in marketing and sales. However, I am also keenly aware that for AI to work well, you need the right data. Oracle is pulling together a lot of data from different applications to ensure its AI is providing the best insights and recommendations, but a company needs to have a sufficient amount of customer data to work with for the AI to work well.

Killexams : Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison says he wants to transform healthcare. First his company will have to tackle a billion-dollar mess.
  • Oracle in June purchased Cerner, a medical-records giant, for about $28 billion.
  • The US Department of Veterans Affairs tapped Cerner in 2018 to overhaul its information systems.
  • Long-standing issues with the technology and the cost of the project just became Oracle's problem.

In June, Larry Ellison, Oracle's chairman, chief technology officer, and cofounder, joined a growing list of billionaires to make lofty promises about transforming healthcare in the US.

The software giant bought the medical-records company Cerner for about $28 billion to dramatically expand its healthcare portfolio.

Shortly after the deal closed in June, Ellison laid out a vision for how the two companies could build a "revolutionary" health-information system in the cloud, creating a way for providers and public-health officials to access patient data from across organizations.

That's a dreamy departure from today, where a person can show up to an emergency room that has no available record of their blood type.

"We're going to solve this problem," Ellison said at a company event.

At $4.1 trillion — or $12,530 worth of spending per American in 2020 — the US healthcare industry is an attractive target for companies that have transformed other sectors and need new ways to grow. Amazon just made its third-largest acquisition to buy a primary-care startup, and experts have speculated it could be used to build a Prime-like offering for people to manage their health.

But after years of pivots and flops, some of Big Tech's projects in healthcare are looking more modest. Last August, Cerner hired Dr. David Feinberg from Google, which had assembled and disassembled a whole health-related product area in three years.

Oracle isn't new to health. But it's a big undertaking to fix the lack of a shared technology infrastructure for US health records, and Ellison's statements will be tough to live up to.

One issue — how well Oracle can navigate a complicated project with the US Department of Veterans Affairs — will be its most visible test.

Oracle's first major test in healthcare is public and messy

The VA is the nation's largest health system, caring for more than 9 million veterans at more than 1,200 healthcare facilities each year. In 2018 it signed a contract with Cerner to replace its 40-year-old electronic medical records. Cerner had already made about $2.8 billion from the project as of April, according to the US Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

But delays and technical issues have plagued the VA's rollout of Cerner's technology. The VA initially won a $10 billion budget to pay Cerner with, but cost estimates have rocketed far beyond that sum such that Congress passed a bill to increase scrutiny of the program.

Citing a study set to be published by the Institute for Defense Analyses, Sen. Jon Tester said in a congressional hearing on July 20 that the lifetime cost of the deployment, upkeep, and other measures would be $50.8 billion over 28 years. The hearing was Oracle's first about the VA contract since acquiring Cerner.

It's unclear to what extent Oracle will use the VA's $10 billion budget to implement fixes and upgrades and how much of the cost Oracle will eat.

"Right now the new EHR is not getting her done," Tester said in the hearing, referring to the electronic-health-records system. He added, "I really do hope that the acquisition by Oracle is going to be a game-changer."

The VA rollout has involved patient harm, shutdowns, and glitches

Oracle has set its sights on using its cloud assets to Excellerate the flow of health information. The company has said it plans to create a unified national health-records database "on top of" hospitals' individual data reams. Oracle also wants to make the records themselves more useful with voice-based search and similar tools.

"That is now our primary mission here at Oracle," Ellison said.

Before 2018, the VA was identifying some of the same problems Ellison said he wanted to fix. The Department of Defense provides medical care to troops until they become veterans, at which point the VA takes over. One goal of the VA's upgrade was to deliver providers at both organizations a way to see those patients' records digitally.

But VA officials have said this goal, among others, has suffered as the Cerner rollout has dragged on. The Office of Inspector General overseeing the VA has issued more than 10 reports about several issues and more than 60 recommended fixes, a handful of which are two years old and still haven't been implemented, frustrating lawmakers.

Crashes and slowdowns of Cerner's technology have caused VA staffers to switch to pen and paper. Providers have struggled to learn the new system, leading the VA to implement more training. And a quirk of the Cerner record has sent physicians' medical orders in Spokane, Washington, to an unmanned inbox, leading to delays in care.

One of the reports described a case in which a psychiatrist's order to schedule a follow-up appointment for a patient without a home was lost in the queue. The report said the patient, who was at risk of suicide, called a crisis line four weeks later about a plan to self-harm, then was hospitalized.

The first VA facility launched Cerner's technology in October 2020, and four more have followed, but no further deployments are planned for 2022 while the VA assesses these issues. Dr. Terry Adirim, who's leading the records project for the VA, said in the hearing that there's concern about what would happen in larger, complex medical centers that perform surgeries and have intensive-care units.

Oracle is pouring resources into the VA issues

To face the music on Capitol Hill, Oracle sent Mike Sicilia, an executive vice president who's leading the Cerner acquisition.

"In my recent meetings with many of you and other congressional stakeholders, your frustration with the current situation was clear," Sicilia said.

The executive said that this was Oracle's first priority and that it had already shifted its top talent, including senior engineers, to work on the VA and Defense Department's EHR system. He said Oracle's main strategy to remedy bugs and cut costs is to move the Cerner application to a modern cloud data center within nine months, if it gets permission from the government to do so.

Oracle did not respond to Insider's request to say more about how that would work, but Sicilia said the migration would come at no additional expense to taxpayers.

Asked whether Oracle knew about the magnitude of these challenges, Sicilia, nearly smiling, said there are always things you discover after the fact.

"We certainly had read things that were publicly disclosed," he said. "But there's nothing like owning something to fully understand what's going on."

Oracle Fusion Sales provides sellers with AI-powered recommendations and guided steps to close deals faster

AUSTIN, Texas, July 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle today announced the next generation of Oracle Fusion Sales, a sales automation application that identifies high-quality sales opportunities and guides sellers to close deals faster. Part of Oracle Fusion Cloud Customer Experience (CX ) and powered by artificial intelligence (AI), Fusion Sales automatically provides sellers with quotes, proposals, and recommended steps to help them increase productivity, close more deals, and instill confidence among buyers.

Nearly one third of sellers struggle to close deals and meet quotas, according to a recent study conducted by CRM analyst firm Beagle Research Group in partnership with Oracle. The study, ” Does Your CRM Leave Money on the Table,” highlights the struggles that sellers face with customer churn and archaic sales processes. In turn, sellers have noted that they are open to greater automation and trust AI to take on greater responsibilities, including qualifying leads (70 percent), identifying priority deals (60 percent), and tracking deal progress (80 percent).

“Traditional CRM systems were designed to be a system of record for planning and forecasting versus a tool to help sellers sell more. As a result, sellers spend countless hours on data entry and administration that stunts sales productivity,” said Rob Tarkoff, executive vice president and general manager, Oracle Fusion Cloud Customer Experience (CX). “Applying 40 plus years of data and business process expertise, we have done the heavy lifting to engineer the next era of CRM. Oracle Fusion Sales removes the manual steps in the B2B sales process to help sellers close more deals faster and more efficiently.”

Oracle Fusion Sales provides sellers with:

  • Step-by-Step Guided Processes: Sellers can onboard faster and Excellerate productivity with a guided step-by-step process to help engage with accounts, progress opportunities, and close deals faster. Customers can choose to base the processes on best practices set by leadership or customizable, industry-specific templates.
  • Conversation Ready Opportunities: Sellers can automate the process of re-qualifying and converting marketing leads into opportunities. Connected to Oracle Fusion Marketing, Fusion Sales automatically creates highly qualified leads and then passes them to sellers for follow-up.
  • Automated Quotes and Proposals: Sellers automatically receive initial quotes, proposals, and implementation schedules when opportunities are created. The quotes are automatically updated throughout the sales process as a deal progresses and are based on historical data that includes prior successful deals, a customer’s industry, and other account attributes.
  • Intelligent Content Recommendations: Sellers can automatically receive marketing-approved content that is most likely to progress the sale. This saves sellers’ and buyers’ time at each step in the sales process and puts the right offers and answers to commonly asked questions directly in the seller’s hands.
  • Digital Sales Rooms: Sellers can Excellerate the buying experience and better engage buyers by building personalized microsites. Helpful resources like quotes, past contracts, reference stories, and details for past or upcoming Zoom meetings are aggregated to help move buyers closer to a purchasing decision. As buyers use Digital Sales Rooms, sales operations can capture buying signals and other customer engagement data that can inform sales insights, internal training and enablement, and drive future deal success.
  • Advanced Revenue Intelligence: Sales leaders can easily access and report on business trends, spot outliers, and monitor customer sentiment and sales performance with Oracle Fusion CX Analytics. Fusion Sales provides a complete view across the business being able to pull in data from sales, marketing, service, finance, and HR all without support from IT.

What Customers and Partners are Saying About Fusion Sales

Killexams : Rimini Street manages Manukau Institute of Technology’s Oracle applications

Manukau Institute of Technology has switched to enterprise software products and services provider Rimini Street to support its Oracle applications.

The switch will allow Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) to continue using its current Oracle software for fifteen or more years into the future without any upgrades while receiving more support.

“Our goal is to ensure our clients’ support needs are met, whatever they may be. Many organisations are pushed into costly, unnecessary and disruptive upgrades by enterprise software companies, because they don’t know about Rimini Street’s proven alternative support programs that do not require upgrades or migrations,” said Rimini Street group vice president and regional general manager Oceania Daniel Benad.

“MIT proves that you can avoid both upgrades and disruptions by turning to Rimini Street support and gaining years of application and technology roadmap flexibility.”

Support needed to maintain IT roadmap flexibility
MIT hosts 11,000 students on five campuses and provides technical, vocational, and professional training education on subjects including hairdressing, automotive, engineering, and digital technologies.

The nursing school provides an opportunity for Māori and Pacific students to study cultural health care practices and learnings to best support their communities.

MIT runs several Oracle applications critical to the institute, including finance, student management, and data warehousing.

However, the vendors providing MIT’s student management and finance services decided to move away from Oracle support, as each application had been earmarked by the vendor with end-of-life dates where full support would cease in 2023.

The institution would have faced costly upgrades to the latest versions in order to remain fully supported by the software vendor.

“We were in a bind. We knew the software vendor’s support for each Oracle application would cease next year, but we wanted to continue using our current applications,” said MIT head of technology Gerald Masters.

“Our current Oracle version was stable, and there was no reason for us to move off it other than Oracle saying ‘we had to’.”

The institute needed to find a way to enable it to continue to use its current software and obtain mission-critical support, while also providing it with the sufficient time needed to identify and implement its next-generation of finance and student management systems.

“Rimini Street stepped up with a unique value proposition and service solution. They could keep us on our current version, which meant we could avoid upgrading to a new Oracle version, at great expense, that we didn’t want or need,” said Masters.

“Rimini Street will provide support for our existing system while giving us the flexibility to decide our next steps in our IT roadmap without pressure. This was a key reason why we made the shift as it really helps us out of a tough situation with a great solution.”

Award-winning comprehensive support
Each Rimini Street client benefits from the company’s enterprise software support model, including its service level agreement of 10-minute response times for all critical Priority 1 cases.

All clients are also assigned a primary support engineer with an average of 20 years’ experience in enterprise software and backed by a team of functional and technical engineers.

Furthermore, Rimini Street ensured a well-controlled transition with upfront information, a dedicated project manager, and continual updates on progress.

“We’re undergoing an institution-wide transition and working to a deadline. Waiting for a patch or an update that takes systems offline for days at a time would have really hindered our other internal efforts, so having Rimini Street support there ensures our mission-critical systems are online and working smoothly, so we’re pleased to know Rimini Street has us covered,” said Masters.
