Through a complex design process, some mistakes will inevitably slip by even the most expert system-on-chip (SoC) design teams. A disciplined V-model process (diagrammed below) will guard against many of these errors in the concept-to-design process (left arm) and in the verification-to-validation process (right arm). Within the industry, teams have developed significant tools and methodology automation for the right arm. The existing process is very good at testing what designers have been tasked to build from the design specification. There are also excellent point tools for the left arm. But methodology automation has not been as strong because system design tools and user domains span a wider range. Moving down the left arm still depends on manual translation from step to step, with the potential for misunderstanding and oversight. Overall, the V process is ineffective at testing the system requirements until the last step of the right arm - validation, though that is rather late to find basic errors.

The Design Specification as System Oracle

Testing depends on a reference specification that claims to offer a precise definition of one or more requirements. In testing jargon, this is known as an oracle, an ultimate arbiter of truth. Oracles may be design or use-case specifications or some other concrete definition of requirements. How precisely an oracle builder adheres to the original system objectives depends on the accuracy, clarity and definition of the input the designer receives. Understandably, a glitch anywhere in this path will propagate. Worse still, it will disseminate with all the authority of an oracle. Every step beyond that point will read that flaw as a non-negotiable requirement until a wider scope test hopefully reveals a disconnect.

It is routine in articles on verification to talk about the cost of finding a bug increasing exponentially the later it is found. The solution is always to shift left by doing more testing early – static verification, formal verification, emulation, etc. Accelerating all these tests is important. Verifiers will catch disconnects between low-level oracles and the design but cannot catch oracle problems. Issues commonly spring from two sources: ambiguity in natural language specifications and schedule pressure forcing incomplete or dropped requirements. Whichever cause applies, no amount of early verification will catch such problems.

Requirements Verification Aids Correct-by-Construction Design

W. Edwards Deming made this observation decades ago: “Inspection to Strengthen quality is too late, ineffective, costly. Quality comes not from inspection, but from the improvement of the production process.” Or in design terms, it is better to architect the first time accurately than to depend on verification to correct the implementation. Verification is still essential to confirm the appropriate behavior. The same statement could be made for updates and bug fixes.

High-level design languages attract some interest but are still quite low-level compared to the ultimate system design and do not have a better connection with system-level requirements. A superior approach is to compare directly with the requirements, minimizing error-prone intermediate levels of interpretation. Designers can compare against requirements from the next higher level in the left arm, leveraging the low-level details of implementation and intuition about higher-level system objectives. This comparison encourages correct-by-construction design. Verifiers equally and independently benefit when building tests. Both can tap into an oracle much closer to the original requirements when implementations are created and modified.

How can the SoC team know that the oracles are reliable? Requirements elaboration down the left arm of the V is ultimately what provides input against which designers will implement the SoC and against which verifiers will build their test suites. Traceability provides links from system specifications down through low-level requirements to implementation, unit tests, and system-level and full-system validation tests. These links ensure that architects, designers and verifiers can follow each requirement to ensure it is correctly interpreted. This process provides more eyes on each oracle, design and verification artifact, and more opportunities to catch misinterpretations.

Traceability’s Untapped Value in Design, Verification and Validation

Traceability is most often associated with compliance testing for safety in automotive and other markets. But it can offer much more in the accuracy of implementation to complex requirements in any domain as a method to encourage correct-by-construction design. It also complements verification left-shift through up-shifting attention to system specifications. Requirements traceability keeps oracles front and center for designers and verifiers. Verification ensures the correctness of the design to those oracles.

Many members of the open-source community—including HP—have embraced the concept of non-proliferation of open-source licenses due to interoperability and compatibility issues raised by having a large number of licenses. The reaction to any new license tends to center on whether a new license addresses an unmet need. That’s why I am concerned about a new license proposed by Oracle.

Recently, Oracle submitted the new Universal Permissive License (UPL) for approval to the Open Source Initiative (OSI), claiming the UPL filled the need for a permissive, MIT-style open-source license with explicit patent grants.

Oracle drafted the UPL to address concerns it had with proposed changes to the Java Community Process (JCP), specifically with regard to license rights in others’ reference implementation technology of Java specifications. Oracle expressed concerns with using other open-source licenses for reference implementation technology due to its need to license this technology under both proprietary licenses (with patent grants) and the GPLv2.

Regardless of what OSI and the JCP Executive Committee decide in regard to UPL in their independent review processes, I have the following concerns:

At a high level, the UPL copyright and patent licenses are overly broad. They extend to current and future versions of both the UPL-licensed code as well as any software or hardware identified in a file included with the UPL-licensed code. There is no requirement that the UPL-licensed code be associated in any way with the software or hardware included in the file in order to use the license to that software or hardware. This is a very expansive license.

There is no defensive termination clause under the UPL, which would allow a licensor to terminate part or all of its license if the licensee sues the licensor for patent infringement. As you can imagine, this is very attractive to those who frequently engage in litigation.

What does use of the UPL mean for companies?
Say Company X makes some code available under the UPL. At a minimum, Company X has just granted very broad copyright and patent licenses in the licensed software and any piece of software or hardware identified in an accompanying text file. Another company making a bug fix or more significant modification to this code could inadvertently grant a broad copyright and patent license to various technologies if it uses the same text file when it makes these modifications available under the UPL.
Given these issues, it’s hard to see why any company with IP interests would use the UPL unless it were compelled to do so (for instance, if it wanted to participate in the JCP and could only do so under the terms of the UPL).The most troubling part of all this is that Oracle has no intention at this time to make any of its own technology available under the UPL, and it intends to use it only so it can get the rights to make others’ technology available under another open-source or proprietary license. While there may be a need for a permissive, MIT-like license with an explicit patent grant, the UPL is not that license. Its grants are too broad, and Oracle has admitted it does not intend at this time to license its technology under it. From a non-proliferation standpoint, I have concerns that this license may make approval and adoption of another, more narrowly scoped permissive license with explicit patent license grants more difficult in the future. What can be done? If Oracle views the UPL as the answer to its concerns about potential changes to the JCP, I suggest it revises the UPL to be more narrowly scoped than its current form. Alternately, why not use the Apache 2 license and relicense Java under it? Oracle could call on the community to relicense any Java technology if it doesn’t possess the necessary rights to do so. Either of the suggestions above would solve Oracle’s stated concerns without creating a new, unnecessary open-source license tailored to the interests of only one member of the open-source community. I view the UPL as a cynical use of open source to get broad rights to others’ technology. I would challenge Oracle to make its technology and IP portfolio available under the same terms it wishes to receive technology and IP rights from others. Open source is about community and collaboration; proposing a license you’re not willing to apply to your own technology is counter to these values.

A frequently asked question is whether existing Java programs will continue to work after the update. Java 7 was first released in July 2011. Oracle will stop posting public updates of Java 7 after April 2015. This is consistent with their stated Java policy, which is to end public updates three years after the general availability date of the major release, one year after the GA of a subsequent major release, and six months after a subsequent major release has been established as the default JRE on Java.com.

Existing Java 7 downloads will remain accessible in the Java Archive on the Oracle Technology Network. For users who wish to continue receiving security updates for Java 7, a support contract with Oracle or a license for Java SE advanced products is required. Continued use of Java 7 without security updates is not recommended.
