A four-year bachelor’s degree has long been the first rung to climbing America’s corporate ladder.

But the move to prioritize skills over a college education is sweeping through some of America’s largest companies, including Google, EY, Microsoft, and Apple. Strong proponents say the shift helps circumvent a needless barrier to workplace diversity.

“I really do believe an inclusive diverse workforce is better for your company, it’s good for the business,” Ginni Rometty, former IBM CEO, told Fortune Media CEO Alan Murray during a panel last month for Connect, Fortune’s executive education community. “That’s not just altruistic.”

Under Rometty’s leadership in 2016, tech giant IBM coined the term “new collar jobs” in reference to roles that require a specific set of skills rather than a four-year degree. It’s a personal commitment for Rometty, one that hits close to home for the 40-year IBM veteran.

When Rometty was 16, her father left the family, leaving her mother, who’d never worked outside the home, suddenly in the position to provide.

“She had four children and nothing past high school, and she had to get a job to…get us out of this downward spiral,” Rometty recalled to Murray. “What I saw in that was that my mother had aptitude; she wasn’t dumb, she just didn’t have access, and that forever stayed in my mind.”

When Rometty became CEO in 2012 following the Great Recession, the U.S. unemployment rate hovered around 8%. Despite the influx of applicants, she struggled to find employees who were trained in the particular cybersecurity area she was looking for.

“I realized I couldn’t hire them, so I had to start building them,” she said.

In 2011, IBM launched a corporate social responsibility effort called the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) in Brooklyn. It’s since expanded to 11 states in the U.S. and 28 countries.

Through P-TECH, Rometty visited “a very poor high school in a bad neighborhood” that received the company’s support, as well as a community college where IBM was offering help with a technology-based curriculum and internships.

“Voilà! These kids could do the work. I didn’t have [applicants with] college degrees, so I learned that propensity to learn is way more important than just having a degree,” Rometty said.

Realizing the students were fully capable of the tasks that IBM needed moved Rometty to return to the drawing board when it came to IBM’s own application process and whom it was reaching. She said that at the time, 95% of job openings at IBM required a four-year degree. As of January 2021, less than half do, and the company is continuously reevaluating its roles.

For the jobs that now no longer require degrees and instead rely on skills and willingness to learn, IBM had always hired Ph.D. holders from the very best Ivy League schools, Rometty told Murray. But data shows that the degree-less hires for the same jobs performed just as well. “They were more loyal, higher retention, and many went on to get college degrees,” she said.

Rometty has since become cochair of OneTen, a civic organization committed to hiring, promoting, and advancing 1 million Black individuals without four-year degrees within the next 10 years.

If college degrees no longer become compulsory for white-collar jobs, many other qualifications—skills that couldn’t be easily taught in a boot camp, apprenticeship program, or in the first month on the job—could die off, too, University of Virginia Darden School of Business professor Sean Martin told Fortune last year.

“The companies themselves miss out on people that research suggests…might be less entitled, more culturally savvy, more desirous of being there,” Martin said. Rather than pedigree, he added, hiring managers should look for motivation.

That’s certainly the case at IBM. Once the company widened its scope, Rometty said, the propensity to learn quickly became more of an important hiring factor than just a degree.

There's no denying it: This year's been a pretty lousy one for the market. The S&P 500 (^GSPC 2.65%) is down 23% year to date, and is sitting within easy reach of a new 52-week low. Blame the rout suffered by several key technology stocks, mostly, paving the way for most other equities.

There's a curious exception to this market-wide and tech sector weakness that's worth noting. IBM (IBM 1.23%) is holding up surprisingly well in the otherwise miserable environment. And it's arguably doing so for all the right reasons despite the specter of a recession. Here are the top three reasons.

1. Diversified business lines that are perpetually in demand

If the economy sours enough, it will take a toll on all businesses, with corporations being forced into extreme austerity. That's a worst-case scenario that doesn't seem a likely threat to IBM, though.

The company might not be positioned for significant growth, but it is positioned to generate revenue in almost any economic environment. Around one-third of its revenue stems from consulting work, while more than one-third comes from software sales. 

These aren't your typical consulting and software businesses, however. Much of it is contractual, meaning its client companies have pre-arranged access to employees or software for a specified period of time. Its annualized recurring software revenue, for example, now stands at $12.9 billion, making up roughly half of its current yearly software sales. Moreover, its software includes cybersecurity, data analysis, artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud computing, and transaction processing. These are service-based software suites that most of its customers rely on in a big way.

The kicker: CFO James Kavanaugh said a couple of years ago, "[For every $1 worth of business on a hybrid cloud platform], another $3 to $5 is
spent on software and another $6 to $8 on the cloud services." In other words, sales of hardware drive long-term software and consulting revenue, yet IBM's unique software and consulting offerings also drive hardware sales. It's a self-powering virtuous cycle.

IBM's solutions aren't something major enterprises can easily replace or simply stop using. In fact, the company argues that technology becomes an even more important growth driver when stagflation stifles traditional growth efforts.

2. IBM is making smart business-building acquisitions

Many companies make acquisitions to increase their revenue without much thought about where or how they fit in. But IBM's deals are made with purpose rather than rooted in status and stature. For instance, in July, the company announced its purchase of Databand.ai, adding the ability to spot errant digital data to the company's data-management arm. Earlier this year, it bought Neudesic, which operates a hybrid cloud consulting business specializing in Microsoft's Azure cloud platform.

None of the six deals the company has made this year have been particularly high-profile acquisitions. Neither have any of the other 20-plus acquisitions CEO Arvind Krishna has directed since taking the helm from Ginni Rometty in early 2020. IBM hasn't made any large-scale deals since buying Red Hat in 2019, in fact. But the smaller companies it's scooping up make its products more marketable.

While the accurate acquisitions have been relatively small, analysts at Evercore ISI (EVR 1.29%) suggest IBM could be mulling an acquisition worth as much as $30 billion, potentially pushing the company into an all-new line of business that creates synergy with its existing ones.

3. A little something is better than a lot of nothing

Lastly, IBM might never dish out enormous organic growth again, but it offers something even more valuable to investors amid economic weakness: a healthy dividend. It currently yields 5.2%, and given the consistent recurring revenue of much of its business as well as how well its payouts are covered, there's no reason to fear this dividend is in jeopardy.

Investors in tune with the company's fiscals might not completely agree. Last fiscal year, IBM dished out $6.55 per share in dividends, but the company only earned $6.41 per share. That's clearly not sustainable.

But it was a year complicated by COVID-19 and more corporate restructuring. In November, IBM completed the spinoff of its managed infrastructure business now called Kyndryl (KD 5.59%). While spinoffs don't technically incur direct operational costs, they can often take an indirect toll on a company's focus and ability to adapt to changing market conditions. IBM hasn't exactly escaped inflationary pressures and the fallout from broken supply chains, either.

Regardless, the company's bottom line is growing again. Analysts collectively expect per-share earnings of $9.34 this year, followed by an improvement to $10.05 next year. That's far more than enough to continue funding the dividend and extend its 27-year streak of annual dividend growth.

Dividends may not be your thing. Amid economic uncertainty, though, collecting good income becomes a pretty big deal.

Getting divorced is a complex process, and it is especially complicated in the military.

Most pitfalls for service members lie in the division of certain government benefits. There are particular restrictions for veterans that govern how their benefits are split during a divorce, as military or veteran benefits may or may not be distributed.

What Military Benefits Are Considered Marital Property?

A military pension may be considered shared property that must be divided in the event of divorce. In general, marital property that does not meet the criteria of separate property is split at divorce. Property obtained either before or after a divorce is referred to as "separate property." Property acquired during the marriage is usually considered shared property unless it was received as a gift or inherited entirely in the spouse's name.

New federal restrictions in 2017 also altered how pensions are distributed throughout all 50 states. The pension is currently locked in time as of the separation, divorce or annulment date. The purpose of this federal regulation was to prohibit an ex-spouse from receiving a higher-than-normal pension sum. For example, if the service member was a sergeant at the time of the divorce but is now a master sergeant, the ex-spouse will get a portion of the retirement income based on the lower rank.

Some examples of military benefits that would be considered separate property include Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) and VA Disability Compensation. These payments are considered separate property of the retiree and are not split upon divorce because they involve an injury or medical condition and are not retirement benefits. Similarly, Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation benefits are not subject to divorce since these benefits are viewed as a particular gratuity provided to veterans with disabilities related to their time in the military as recompense for any diseases or injuries they sustained while serving.

The 20/20/20 Rule

The 20/20/20 rule is often brought up during a military divorce when deciding upon an ex-spouse's access to the same benefits as a military spouse. The breakdown of the criteria that make ex-spouses eligible include:

  • Being married for 20 years;
  • The military spouse having served for 20 years; and
  • The 20 years of marriage overlapping the 20 years of military service.

Should the ex-spouse meet all of these requirements, they will receive access to the same benefits as a current military spouse for the remainder of their life, provided they don't remarry. They will still retain their military ID card, which grants them access to base commissaries and military exchanges. Continuation of Tricare benefits for qualifying spouses is not automatic and must be re-registered under their own names and Social Security numbers. Tricare requires applicants to provide original copies of their marriage certificates, divorce decrees and any other papers proving their ex-military spouse's service or retirement.

According to the Tricare website, eligible former spouses have the same Tricare coverage choices as retired family members up until they remarry or sign up for an employer-sponsored health plan.

The 10/10 Rule

Another rule that is often cited during a military divorce when it comes to awarding military pensions is the 10/10 rule. In short, the 10/10 rule states that, if the marriage lasted 10 years and the service member or former service member served in the military for at least 10 years during that time, the former spouse is entitled to pension payments directly from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). The spouse's attorney must ensure that specific language is included in the divorce paperwork.

The rule addresses only the source of payment to the spouse, which is a direct payment. The spouse gets pension-related payments directly from DFAS, which handles payments for the Defense Department. As a result, the ex-spouse is freed from the need to rely on and wait for payments from the retired service member.

The 10/10 rule generally causes confusion when retired military personnel claim that the former spouse is only eligible for military pension benefits if the pair were married for at least 10 years while they were together serving in the military. The 10/10 rule is only used to determine whether the former spouse will receive payments directly from DFAS instead of the service member or veteran. The 10/10 rule is not used to determine whether a former spouse is entitled to a portion of the pension.

The Uniformed Services Former Spouses' Protection Act

The USFSPA is a statute passed by Congress in 1982 to provide financial protection to some ex-spouses of service members. It permits states to divide military disposable retiree pay as marital property in the event of a divorce. Disposable retirement pay is defined as the total monthly retirement pay, minus:

  • Deductions for retirement pay forfeitures following a court-martial;
  • Deductions from a military member's waiver of retirement pay as a requirement for veteran benefits;
  • Amounts equivalent to retirement compensation under U.S. Code Title 10, Chapter 61 Script; and
  • Elective deductions in accordance with U.S. Code Title 10, Chapter 73 Code used for annuities paid to a spouse or ex-spouse in accordance with Title 10, Section 1408 of the U.S. Code.

Further, a former spouse can take out child support or alimony from the military spouse's retired pay; however, it still requires a court order and must pass the 10/10 rule should the award be sent as a direct payment. According to the USFSPA, no more than 65% of a retired military member's pension can be deducted for spousal and child support obligations.

Survivor Benefits Plan Elections

The SBP is an annuity that a retiring service member can elect to ensure that their beneficiary receives a portion of the retired pay after they die. SBP is a specific benefit that the retiree must elect, generally at the time of retirement from active duty or immediately upon receiving their 20-year letter as a reservist, for a spouse, child or anyone with an insurable interest in the retiree.

Even if some service members decide not to sign up for the SBP plan because they have no qualified beneficiaries, they might later get married or have a kid who qualifies for benefits and want to change their election status. Because the reasons for changing one's coverage are few and far between, the SBP election made by service members at the time of retirement is difficult to change. In such a case, a service member would have one year from the date of initial eligibility (marital change, childbirth, etc.) to announce their desire to have their beneficiary covered.

In the case of marriages, there are many different nuances to be aware of, and depending on whether it is a remarriage or not, the election process and coverage amount may be subject to change. Understanding Your Benefits in a Military Divorce

Divorces involving military personnel may be highly complex. What Is THC-B?

It has been determined that THC-B has an affinity for both CB1 receptors (cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system) and CB2 receptors (cannabinoid receptors mainly in the immune and digestive systems), much like Delta-9. But, the researchers who isolated THC-B did test out the compound in animal trials to get a basic understanding of what viable benefits it has. They displayed how it created some of the identical effects in mice as it did in humans.

These primary effects include:

  • Analgesic Properties: The researchers observed analgesic effects when testing out THC-B. Analgesics are agents that reduce pain levels by affecting the way in which the brain receives signals from pain receptors that belong to the nervous system. THC-B products wouldn’t be the only cannabinoid to have analgesic effects, as several other cannabinoids, like CBD and delta 8 THC also have this property.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Many cannabinoids offer anti-inflammatory effects, and THC-B appears to be no different. The observed anti-inflammatory properties associated with THC-B likely have to do with the cannabinoid’s interaction with CB2 receptors that, among other things, can regulate the immune system’s inflammation response.
  • Sleep Effects: THC-B was shown to have positive effects on sleep. Specifically, the researchers observed that THC-B allowed for deeper sleep, and a shorter sleep onset time, both of which can be enormously useful to those who struggle with sleep each night.

Note: If you’re currently taking any medications, you should talk to your doctor first (and regardless, you should if you’re new to this cannabinoid) about trying THC-B, as it could suppress the CYP3A4 enzyme that’s responsible for metabolizing half the popular meds we take.

Is THC-B Legal? 

So the THC-B benefits are great, but are they legal? When researching what is THC-B one of the most important pieces of information you need to find is if THC-B is legal in your state. And, as of now, there’s no reason why it wouldn’t be, at least on a federal level, as we all know that state laws can change rapidly and sometimes without a seemingly good reason. THC-B is not a specific type of cannabinoid, but rather the result of a chemical process applied to existing cannabinoids that are already protected under federal law.

Also, THC-B can be applied to non-psychoactive cannabinoids as much as intoxicating ones, so THC-B is not inherently associated with causing a high, which is what makes many cannabinoids legally controversial. At this point, THCB and THC-B products are considered legal and may possibly be shipped to most states. 

Does THC-B Show Up On A Drug Test? 

As a rule of thumb, any time you encounter a cannabinoid with “THC” in the name, you should assume that it puts you at risk of failing a drug test. Why? Because all THC-based cannabinoids are metabolized by an enzyme called THC-COOH, which is what standard drug tests are seeking to identify in a person’s urine.

Also, IBM spun off its managed infrastructure business into a new public company, Kyndryl. This business was less of a fit with the parent company amid its pivot to the cloud. Separating it off should make it easier for IBM to grow its revenue.

Time will tell if these moves can help the stock price recover. Nonetheless, IBM currently pays its shareholders $1.65 per share every quarter, or $6.60 per share annually. At the current stock price, that adds up to a yield of 5.6% per year. Additionally, bond interest payments are subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local taxes. In some cases, this is higher than taxes on dividends. Still, bond issuers are obligated to make such payments. In contrast, IBM faces no legal obligation to continue its dividend.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – In a move to enhance its hybrid cloud and AI capabilities, IBM will buy the digital product engineering consulting services firm Dialexa in a deal that will close later this year.

IBM announced the deal in a statement, which also notes that the purchase of the firm will “deepen IBM’s product engineering expertise and provide end-to-end digital transformation services for clients.”

When the deal closes, Dialexa will become the sixth company bought by IBM in 2022.

But Big Blue has been on a buying frenzy since April 2020, when Arvind Krishna became the company’s CEO.  According to the company, IBM has acquired more than 25 other firms, with 13 to bolster IBM Consulting.

The latest acquisition of Dialexa points toward how IBM may grow its consulting services presence.

“In this digital era, clients are looking for the right mix of high-quality products to build new revenue streams and Excellerate topline growth,” said John Granger, senior vice president, IBM Consulting, in a statement. “Dialexa’s product engineering expertise, combined with IBM’s hybrid cloud and business transformation offerings, will help our clients turn concepts into differentiated product portfolios that accelerate growth.”

The company’s 300 employees are based in Dallas and in Chicago, and will join IBM Consulting, according to the statement.  Among the firm’s clients is Toyota Motor North America, which will invest $2.5 billion in North Carolina to build the company’s first U.S. electric battery manufacturing plant in Randolph County.
