Bitesize is knowledgeable, straightforward, approachable - and never patronising. Our content should make the user feel supported and comfortable while giving them the information they need to succeed. No matter what level the user is at, we want them to feel we’ve got them.

Bitesize curriculum content includes the familiar Bitesize learner guides, covering all the main GCSE and Scottish National and Higher subjects, a selection of subjects for primary and younger secondary students and functional skills English and Maths for post-16. Content is kept up-to-date with the UK curricula and each year we commission short-form video and animation for a range of subjects as well text, graphics and some interactive content.

Our support content includes video-led articles offering advice and guidance for young people on syllabus such as managing exam stress, choosing options, post-16 pathways and managing money. Bitesize Careers offers a collection of text, video and image-based job profiles as well as articles about skills for work and returning to learning. This new Bitesize content is designed to reach audiences aged 16-35 as well as the site's core audience of 5-16s.

BBC Education delivers curriculum linked programming through BBC Teach and Live Lessons, addressing societal and educational deficits within the UK by acting as a leader of strategic partnerships aimed at effecting tangible change. Our campaigns include:

In 2016 the BBC and its partners designed, manufactured and distributed up to 1 million BBC micro:bits free to every pupil in Year 7 in England and Wales, S1 in Scotland and Year 8 Northern Ireland. The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized codeable computer with motion detection, a built-in compass and Bluetooth technology. To ensure a long lasting legacy for this campaign we are supporting the micro:bit foundation by creating inspirational content for teachers and students using BBC brands.

Super Movers  is a partnership between the BBC and the Premier League and provides teachers with free, fun, curriculum-linked video resources to inspire children to learn while they move. Super Movers can be used at home with a range of videos and games designed to get children and grown-ups moving together in their living rooms, so parents as well as teachers can join in the fun.

BBC Terrific Scientific is a bold, ambitious science campaign to inspire 9-11 year-old primary school pupils and their teachers through exciting, innovative and accessible mass-participation scientific investigations. Terrific Scientific Do It Yourself complements the classroom campaign by encouraging families to get hands on with science during the school holidays.

Radio 1 Academy saw us join forces with Hull’s City of Culture to take up residency in Hull for 2017 to inspire local students to take the next step in creative careers. A series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activities in the area culminated in a packed week of live radio shows, gigs, masterclasses and Q&As. BBC Food is the most delicious part of the BBC website with over 10,000 inspirational recipes, how-to videos, articles on current food issues, health and diet advice. We publish recipes from programmes on the BBC as well as supporting our public service goals of encouraging healthy eating, teaching cooking skills and supporting audiences with variable dietary needs and budgets.

We are actively pursuing younger audiences with content and features that make it easy to learn to cook, whatever their budget, skill level and diet.

BBC Food is knowledgeable, but not stuffy, enthusiastic but, not gimmicky, friendly, but never patronising. Our content should make the user feel excited and inspired while giving them clear and simple instructions they need to cook. No matter what level they are at, we want them to feel that they can succeed.

Diversity is paramount, with different formats and styles serving a variety of audiences and keeping our content fresh and novel. Our content needs to combine entertainment and education, and the food always has to come first. Our audiences trust us to be reliable and accessible, but we have to tempt them with deliciousness.

Education is a human right

The right to education is enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, goes further to stipulate that countries shall make higher education accessible to all.

Education is key to sustainable development

When it adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015, the international community recognized that education is essential for the success of all 17 of its goals. Sustainable Development Goal 4, in particular, aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030.

Challenges to achieving universal education

Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future. But about 258 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. 

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.

(Nortel Networks Limited, Brampton, Ontario) Once a world leader in telecommunications products, Nortel filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and sold its CDMA business and LTE assets to Ericsson and its enterprise and government business to Avaya.

Nortel's products included switching, wireless and broadband systems for service providers and carriers, telephones and systems for residential and business users, computer telephony integration, multimedia and telephone network management systems.

With an international history that goes back more than a century, Nortel was a pioneer in telecom. After Alexander Graham Bell's father sold his share in his son's telephone patent to National Bell Telephone of Boston in 1880, a former sea captain, Charles Fleetford Sise, was sent to Montreal to create Bell Telephone Company of Canada. Within two years, the company began to make its own telephones. By 1895, the manufacturing branch was spun off into Northern Electric and Manufacturing, later renamed Northern Electric when it merged with the wire and cable subsidiary of Bell in 1914.

Over the next decades, Northern Electric manufactured equipment designed by Western Electric, which owned as much as 46% of the company at one time. It also made a raft of other products including radios, TVs, amplifiers, Hammond organs, sound equipment and police and fire call boxes. After the 1956 consent decree that caused AT&T to eliminate its partnerships, the company gained technical independence from Western Electric and established its own R&D labs in Ottawa.

In 1971, Northern Electric merged its research and development with Bell Canada to form BNR (Bell Northern Research). A year later, it introduced its first line of computerized PBXs, which evolved into digital PBXs and digital switches.

In 1976, Northern Electric was renamed Northern Telecom. Its DMS line of digital central office telephone switches, introduced a year later, provided explosive growth for the company, especially after the 1984 AT&T breakup. Northern Telecom became the first non-Japanese supplier to Nippon Telegraph & Telephone, and the company took advantage of opportunities in Europe and China.

In 1995, it adopted a new logo and name: NORTEL. In 1998, it added Networks to its name when it merged with Bay Networks, a major manufacturer of hubs and routers. From its roots back to Alexander Graham Bell, Nortel Networks became one of the world's largest suppliers of digital network solutions.

Far too often, it is loosely said that education is the way to go. In the last few decades, education is especially portrayed as the best way out of poverty.

It is difficult to focus on the subject matter of education without grounding ourselves on what education means. Naturally, education is a big word and has many nuances. Education primarily refers to the process of receiving or giving systematic instructions, or both the act of teaching knowledge to others and the act of receiving knowledge from someone else. In our modern times, education is also framed within a school or university setting.

In the minds of many societies, the importance of education is its mission and capacity to develop critical thinking. In other words, while receiving knowledge is integral to education, it is not the purpose of education to simply build a storage facility in students. Rather, it is what students do with what is stored in their memory banks, making critical thinking the more important goal of education.

At schooling age, and especially at the earlier stages, the role of education as the process of receiving or giving systematic instructions is highlighted. It is because students at very young ages both need and can only accept instructions at that level. The more sophisticated nuances of education are applicable only when the firm foundation of receiving and giving instructions is built. Only after is receiving and giving knowledge, the other major way of defining education, possible.

Of course, the meaning of education is easier understood when broken down into subjects or syllabus being taught. This convenient way of understanding education is very narrow, though, when taken out of context from the important goal of developing critical thinking. In other words, the subjects being taught may be wrongly viewed as separate from one another. Different as they are, they are also meant to be ultimately woven into one knowledge and application base in every student.

Knowledge stored and memorized may be key for children, but knowledge applied in daily life and human interaction is always a key result that we want to see and monitor among students. At any given milestone of education, or assessing the quality of its development, the volume of knowledge and its appropriate application are the primary concern.

Let me bring in at this point another meaning of education, the more meaningful one for me, and more critical, too, for Philippine education. Education is also defined as an enlightening experience – enlightening for students, enlightening for teachers. The quality of the student’s and teacher’s enlightenment from the earliest to the latest stages of education is actually the key measure of education; perhaps, the only meaningful measurement.

I cannot avoid bringing back to mind that disastrous learning poverty we are experiencing today. Actually, we must have been deteriorating for decades and have been ineffective in arresting the slide of education in the country. Our learning poverty is particularly painful and challenging because it has developed all the while the government has been adding more funds for education.

There was a time when most Filipino youth did not graduate high school. Poverty was the main cause as many children had to help their parents eke out a living. Or parents simply could not afford to support their children’s education and meals while in school. But that has greatly improved in the last two decades and the majority of students now do finish high school.

After heavily subsidizing elementary and secondary education, including related programs like Conditional Cash Transfer which supports school attendance of children of the very poor, more than 90% of Filipinos now go to school and the vast majority will finish high school. One would think that the quantity of education, meaning most young Filipinos do go to school, would lift the education status of our young.

Shockingly, the latest World Bank assessment on global learning poverty has the Philippines at the bottom in our region with 9 out of 10 Filipino children cannot seem to read and understand instructions. What a shameful blow to our educational system, the efficiency of education leaderships, and national governance as well. Forget critical thinking when 10-year-old children cannot read and understand simple instructions.

Without critical thinking, the whole program is headed to a horrible failure. Without critical thinking, only fractured enlightenment is possible. Without critical thinking, Filipino youth cannot thread the many subjects they are taught. And they would not be in a position to apply their in-school education to daily life.

To assume an intellectual deficiency among our young would be very wrong. To assume a teaching inefficiency would be right, but only partly so, if by teaching we mean giving lessons in various subject matters. But to assume a clear separation between education and life in general or culture in particular, would be disastrous.

Our culture has always taught us that we say what we mean, and we do what we say. The virtue of integrity starts in a very simplified manner, to be in integrity with our thoughts, our words, and our actions. Parents are great teachers and models, way before school teachers, but parents must be consistent in their words and their behavior. Because behavior teaches more effectively than words, especially among the young.

Truth is the main keeper of order. It is the universal platform of understanding that connects us all. When the truth is sacrificed for any reason, our sense of order is sacrificed as well. In the age of disinformation, those who actively place the fake and false over the real and the truth are criminals against societal order on all fronts. Unfortunately, our young are very vulnerable prey.

When our youth cannot read and understand instructions, they cannot distinguish between truth and lie either. There will be no workplace that will accept employees who are unable to understand instructions, and also unable to stand by the truth. Very scary prospects, indeed.

Commissioning  surged into contention for next year's Qipco One Thousand Guineas (G1) with an impressive performance in the Sept. 23 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmarket to maintain her unbeaten record. She could be the next potential star for trainers John and Thady Gosden.

However, far from overflowing with superlatives after Commissioning's runaway victory, John Gosden instead took greater pleasure in discussing the filly's family and what the success would mean to her owner/breeders Isa Salman and Abdulla Al Khalifa.

Intriguingly, he also spoke on how Frankie Dettori could not stop the juvenile after she crossed the line on her winning debut at the end of July.

"I trained her mother (Sovereign Parade )," Gosden said. "We're thrilled and thrilled for the owner/breeders. It's exciting when you buy a mare, race her, and then she quickly produces something like this at stud; that's very pleasing for an owner/breeder.

"We wanted to deliver her a bit of time after (her debut) as she was growing. Frankie was surprised that day. He said he couldn't pull her up and she went all the way to the end that day, which is a long way.

"We thought we'd wait for this rather than run her in the May Hill (G2). She met the rising ground, and she flew, so an extra furlong will help her a lot."

As well as training Commissioning's dam, Gosden also oversaw the career of her sire Kingman , who came close to landing the Two Thousand Guineas (G1) at Newmarket in 2014, only to lose out in the closing stages to Night of Thunder .

Next year's One Thousand Guineas could be a long-term target for Commissioning, who was cut to 6-1 (from 16) for the Classic by Paddy Power and Betfair, with the bet365 Fillies' Mile (G1) at Newmarket Oct. 7 a possible next target.


It is an option alongside the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf (G1T) at Keeneland, a race that Gosden's previous Rockfel winner Juliet Capulet  ran in back in 2017. With the Rockfel part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Series, it provides automatic, paid entry into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) Nov. 4.

"The Fillies' Mile comes up quickly, but it makes sense," Gosden added. "It's close to home, and she's happy and well, so we'll have a look at it. She'll get the mile.

"We have the Breeders' Cup option too—we did go to Del Mar with a filly who won this race. She didn't stay, but this filly will."

Commissioning was chased home by Electric Eyes , whose trainer Karl Burke took the opportunity to compare her favorably to another daughter of Siyouni  who was the star of his yard.

"She has a lot of similarities in terms of her personality with Laurens," Burke said. "You wouldn't get too close to her in her box, and she wouldn't go in the saddling boxes today, but it's all new to her.

"She's an inexperienced filly—a big, raw filly—but she's got lots of talent. She's exciting for sure."
