From Microsoft and IBM to Alphabet’s unit X and Canada’s D-Wave Systems, companies are racing to build powerful quantum computers that may solve problems beyond the capacity of the most sophisticated conventional processors, and do it much faster.

It’ll be some years before such uber-computers are robust and reliable enough for broad commercial use. But tech companies are already writing the novel kinds of software these revolutionary computers will need in order to operate—and businesses are even helping to train the workforce for a future era of “quantum speed-up.’’ For that training task, Microsoft and X, the cutting-edge research arm of Google parent company Alphabet, have partnered with a San Francisco-based educational technology company called Brilliant.

In a new course offered by Brilliant, students can learn the basics about quantum computing, write some quantum code, and provide it a spin on a system that simulates the workings of a quantum computer—all using their smartphones if they like, says chief operating officer Eli Ross.

Advanced skill in quantum computing is rare—even more rare than expertise in other emerging fields where engineers are highly sought, such as in artificial intelligence disciplines like machine learning and deep learning. The global number of high-level researchers in quantum computing may be less than a thousand, the New York Times estimated in October. And that scarcity could stymie progress for companies in the field.

“To date, the tech talent shortage in quantum science has been a critical bottleneck to the industry’s progress,’’ the quantum software company Zapata Computing said as it announced a $21 million Series A funding round in April.

Brilliant and its two big partners hope to do something about that bottleneck.

Brilliant teaches STEM topics, from math fundamentals on up, by feeding online students with small, digestible bites of content along with exercises that encourage them to make immediate use of what they’ve learned.

Among Brilliant’s courses is an introduction to basic, classical computer science concepts, like the fact that each “bit’’ of information consists of only one of two numbers: zero or one. (A string of 8 bits, such as 0 1 0 1 1 0 1 0, makes up a byte, which codes for a single letter or other character, such as an “A” or a “&.’’)

In its new course, though, Brilliant is teaching students to set aside that traditional CompSci canon and grapple with the bizarro-world perspective of quantum computing, which looks at 0 and 1 and says, “Why choose?’’

In quantum computing, the units of information are known as quantum bits, or “qubits,’’ that can each stand for 0, or 1, or—brace yourself—they can be said to represent both 0 and 1 at the same time. This startling feat is achieved when quantum computer designers nudge the qubits into a state called superposition.

Tech innovators anticipate that computers based on such underpinnings could outperform conventional processors by exponential leaps when tackling certain complex problems. The technical challenges are huge, but companies are pouring resources into creating qubit chips, quantum software, and cloud-based services where enterprise-scale businesses can test out early quantum computers.

Not surprisingly, conventional software algorithms won’t do for these quantum computers. They’re based on quantum mechanics—which concerns the behavior of atoms, subatomic particles, and energy—-rather than on the classical physics that describes the familiar behavior of relatively large-scale things like tennis balls. (Subatomic particles such as electrons can exist in transient, in-between states, similar to superposition in a qubit.)

Brilliant’s class in quantum computing moves on to explain much more complex and counterintuitive concepts—like what happens when two qubits become entangled. Along with superposition, entanglement is a key technique in amplifying computing power. There’s a payoff for mastering all this weirdness, because it opens up a universe of strange possibilities. (Hint: Teleportation!)

The course introduces students to Microsoft’s Q# programming language, which was designed to work with the real quantum computers that have already been built. Though these machines are still at an experimental stage, and so far lack the capabilities needed to tackle the most challenging computational tasks, they are already serving as test beds for their inventors and for selected companies invited to explore their potential.

Developers of these powerhouse computers want more researchers and programmers to be up to speed on quantum computing—and standing ready to pose really big questions—as the technology matures and becomes more widely available. Quantum computers could deliver breakthroughs in fields from code-breaking to drug development and to the design of super-catalysts, advocates say. Their anticipated ability to bust through the encryption that shields sensitive data raises national security concerns—one of the reasons why quantum computing is an arena of intense international competition.

Cambridge, MA-based Zapata Computing is one of the US companies competing to make hires from the scanty global pool of quantum computing experts. Zapata’s work on a software platform for quantum computing is based on a collection of quantum algorithms it licensed from Harvard University. Zapata’s hiring struggles may have been worsened by restrictive US immigration policies, its CEO and co-founder Christopher Savoie told the New York Times late last year.

Zapata helped organize a campaign to bolster US education and research on quantum computing as a co-founder of the Quantum Industry Coalition—one of the groups that advocated for the passage of a new federal statute, the National Quantum Initiative Act, which became law in December. It sets up a multi-part initiative to support not only research in quantum computing, but also a raft of US educational programs in the field. Much of this 10-year initiative will involve universities and research centers, which can apply for millions of dollars in funding from federal grants.

Companies are already contributing to the training of experienced engineers through entry points such as Microsoft’s Quantum Development Kit.

But Brilliant and its partners Microsoft and X also provided students anywhere a quick way to get started in the field when the company first offered its Quantum Computing course to existing users in December.

This is the first micro-credential to be offered at UF, joining eight online or hybrid certificate programs.

Micro-credentials have emerged as an ideal way for working professionals to become proficient in a specific area through short, non-credit courses that culminate in a competency-based badge.

Earning a micro-credential helps fill knowledge gaps, especially for those in the workforce who have limited time and cannot commit to a semester or longer of learning.

The AI micro-credential program allows participants to learn skills they can leverage for career advancements, from a new job to a raise, new title or additional responsibilities and status with a current employer.

High Demand for AI skills
People with such skills are in high demand. There were nearly 15,000 AI-related job postings in Florida in 2021, according to the AI Index 2022 Annual Report.

UF launched its AI micro-credential program in the fall in partnership with NVIDIA, which provided funding. NVIDIA is a leading manufacturer of high-end graphics processing units and chip systems used in two-thirds of the world’s supercomputers, including UF’s HiPerGator.

The AI micro-credential consists of seven non-credit courses offered in various modalities that allow people with any level of machine learning background to participate. The courses are available to everyone, from faculty and staff to the broader community.

Regina Rodriguez, provost fellow for professional education, says the program is a great way for anyone to learn skills in AI that will help them play a role in a world of growing reliance on technology.

“The courses that we are launching at UF are for those that may not have any understanding of AI,” she said. “So really starting with foundation courses and teaching the users of AI versus the developers of AI.”

To earn the micro-credential, participants complete a 15-hour foundation course that focuses on ethics in AI and a second, 15-hour fundamentals course – with a focus on either engineering or STEM.

Micro-credential offers specialized focus areas
After the foundation courses are completed, participants choose a final course, designed to demonstrate how AI is used in various fields to solve real world problems, from one of four focus areas.

The current focus areas are agriculture and life sciences, applied data science, business and engineering. UF is adding specialization courses from the College of Medicine in mid-August and the College of Law in the fall. The program is also collaborating with UF Research Computing to offer short courses and access to the HiPer Gator supercomputer.

Upcoming 15-hour course offerings include Ethics of AI on Aug. 1, AI in Business on Sept. 3, AI in Agriculture and Life Sciences of Oct. 3 and AI in Applied Data Science on Nov. 1.

For people who are interested in learning about AI but do not want to commit to earning a micro-credential, there are one and four-hour asynchronous courses available apart from the 15-hour hybrid courses needed to earn a micro-credential. The one-hour course is free and provides users with basic knowledge about AI and the four-hour course costs $249 and earns participants a certificate of completion. However, the shorter courses do not provide as much faculty interaction and discussion as the $1,095 for each micro-credential course.

The courses are priced comparable to other universities professional development courses. UF faculty and staff can take the courses for free to better perfect their craft.

“A proactive approach for executives”
The micro-credential program is also beneficial for companies and executives looking to expand their knowledge. CEOs and other C-Suite business leaders working in and outside of AI have taken courses offered by the program.

Pete Martinez, the CEO of Sivotec Bioinformatics and a former IBM vice president, participated in the Ethics of AI course, which he described as intellectually stimulating.

“The University of Florida Ethics of AI program provides a proactive approach for executives to engage in deep-thought through a multi-disciplinary forum on the ethical impacts of AI innovations,” he said in a message to Rodriguez. “What I found of great value was the involvement from industry in its development. If treated as a pure academic program, it would lose the real-life implications of policies and regulations.”

The program has recently partnered with FlapMax, a conference and training program for AI startups, to provide over 80 worldwide companies in its network with webinars and info sessions on AI in agriculture. The program has also partnered with the technology company L3Harris to develop and deliver short courses for industry professionals learning about deep neural network-based solutions.

Rodriguez says the program is just getting started with artificial intelligence offerings.

“You can start to become an expert in AI today,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what stage of educational background you’re in.”

Design is having a moment. The process of identifying a user’s needs, prototyping and iterating ideas, observing user testing, and getting feedback has become a buzz-worthy approach across industries. One of our most prominent alumni, IBM CEO Virginia Rometty, was recently featured in a New York Times article on the company’s new strategy. “Design thinking is at the center,” she was quoted as saying.

At Northwestern Engineering, we have been teaching design thinking as an essential skill for 20 years. Design puts humans at the center of the process. What do users want? What do they need? What is the real problem behind the perceived problem?

It begins at the beginning with our first-year students: Every engineering student must enroll in Design Thinking and Communication, a two-quarter course in which they work in teams to design solutions for real clients. Many projects involve clients at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. One patient, for example, needed a way for his walker-leg gliders to slide more easily. Another patient wanted a way to crochet with one hand.

Design innovation empowers leaders to develop meaningful solutions, create new value, and envision new possibilities. At the highest level, design unlocks creativity and the ability to imagine a new future.

These projects, and our design-thinking approach, were highlighted by The Wall Street Journal in February. The article underscored how these problems teach our students resiliency: how to observe the problem in action, brainstorm several solutions, prototype their ideas, conduct user testing, fail, reframe their approach, and try again.

I am pleased to feature our approach to design innovation in this issue of the magazine. Through the Segal Design Institute, we teach these skills across undergraduate and graduate programs, and, increasingly, across the University. Design innovation empowers leaders to develop meaningful solutions, create new value, and envision new possibilities. At the highest level, design unlocks creativity and the ability to imagine a new future.

Another skill our undergraduates are increasingly seeking is proficiency in computer science. Programming skills have become necessary in every field, and students from across Northwestern are taking computer science courses to prepare for a multitude of careers. Our Fundamentals of Computer Programming class enrolls students from nearly every school at the university and fills our biggest classroom. This is an area of increasing focus for us, and we will continue to revamp courses and broaden our offerings.

This issue also features ways our faculty are working toward energy sustainability. Sossina Haile, who we welcomed as a new materials science and engineering professor in 2015, is working to make liquid solar fuels a reality. Civil and environmental engineering professor Kimberly Gray’s vision for a living city involves an entirely redesigned system that reimagines how energy, water, and information should flow. This issue shows this is an exciting time to be an engineer. I hope you agree.

Information Technology Management for Business is home to future leaders of the IT industry.

Everything on the IT Management for Business course is focused on the application of practice, enabling you to understand the real-life challenges faced by industry.

No previous technology experience is required to join the course, only a passion for harnessing innovation and creativity to Improve the management of IT.

Teaching and learning

You will normally study four or five course units per semester.

Each week there are usually two hours of lectures for each course unit and a one-hour workshop in alternate weeks, although this varies slightly.

You are expected to double this in private study.

Group work and group or individual presentations will form a regular part of your assignments.

Coursework and assessment

Essays, multiple choice tests, project reports and presentations, in-class tests, and weekly assignments constitute the coursework component of assessment, although the nature and proportion of coursework varies across course units.

The remainder of assessment is by unseen examination.

Depending on the degree course, in your final year you can choose to do a research-based dissertation or project.

We aim to strike a balance between examinations and assessed coursework as well as providing opportunities for feedback on progress through non-assessed work.

Course unit details

You take course units totalling 360 credits over the duration of your studies in order to graduate with Honours (120 credits in each year of study).

Generally, one-semester courses are worth 10 credits and full-year courses are worth 20 credits.

As your studies progress you have increasing flexibility in choosing courses which suit your personal interests and career aspirations.

Project work integrates business and IT throughout the degree.

Our current first-year project is supported by Credit Suisse and involves developing an application to solve a real business problem.

In addition to foundation-level course units in IT, you will also study marketing, economics, and work psychology.

By the end of your first year you will have presented your team project to employers at two employer showcases and participated in skills sessions delivered by companies such as KPMG, Fujitsu, and Bank of America.

Industrial experience can be a significant component of the ITMB experience, offering real-world experience with innovative organisations.

Previous students have completed placements with Adobe, Bank of America, Credit Suisse, Deloitte, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Medallia, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, PepsiCo, PwC, and Vodafone, among others.

Our students have worked in placement roles spanning business analysis, e-commerce, digital marketing, and project management.

Your final year provides an in-depth view of big data and business analytics, IT risk, and architecture.

You will gain practical skills in the design and application of business IT architectures through a core unit developed with IBM, which applies a case study from the global technology giant.

You will also undertake your own final-year research project - the development of an IT solution to a business problem which will encompass investigation, requirement analysis, design, and evaluation of your proposed solution.

Previous ITMB students have studied a variety of subjects including how large corporations use technology to manage teams across geographic locations and time zones, IT provision in the treatment of diabetes in the NHS, and the implications of the rise in social networking on management.

Course structure

Our degrees first teach the core concepts underpinning computer science before allowing you to choose from a wide range of advanced computer science topics.

In year one, you will study the fundamental core skills and knowledge underpinning computer science: all three major programming paradigms; algorithmics; the mathematics integral to computer science; computer architecture; and software tools.

You will gain experience of implementing these techniques in supervised practical classes and individual assignments, solving problems using a variety of programming languages. This will quickly build up your analytic and programming abilities, enabling you to adapt easily to new programming languages and paradigms.

In year two, you will take classes introducing major areas within computer science, including theoretical and data-driven computer science and the relationship between computer science and society.

You will also gain experience working on a practical project in collaboration with a real-world client such as Hewlett Packard or the Environment Agency, before specialising in areas of computing that are of interest to you for the rest of your degree.
