Robert Loredo is the IBM quantum ambassador worldwide lead and a master inventor based in South Florida. Catherine Treviño is a z Hardware brand technical specialist based in Poughkeepsie, New York.

In this Q&A, these three employees open up about how mentorship has benefitted their careers and share the importance of giving back to fellow members of the Hispanic community. 

Tell us about your journey at IBM.

Flores: I joined IBM over 30 years ago as an intern and student at the University of Texas at Austin where I obtained a degree in computer science. As a software developer, I thrive on leveraging technology to accelerate business and collaborate with clients to drive app modernization. IBM has superlative talent around the world, many of whom have guided my journey. Being a strong technologist means being a continuous learner of technology as well as establishing a strong network.

Loredo: I joined IBM in 2004 and am fortunate to have a successful career because of IBM's network and community. I have 20 years of experience in enterprise product development leveraging leading-edge technologies, most recently with quantum computing, a technology that's expected to solve intractable problems that today's most powerful classical supercomputers find challenging to solve.

Treviño: My journey at IBM has been short but accomplished! I joined in 2020 as an intern and rising senior from the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley. Upon completing my internship, I accepted an offer and returned in 2021. I've since switched roles to a different business unit, thanks to the guidance of fellow volunteers of Hispanics@IBM, the community for Hispanic IBM employees.

How has mentorship impacted your career?

Treviño: Networking led to a new opportunity within my first year at IBM. When I first joined full-time, I quickly realized the role was not the right fit. As a first-generation professional, I wasn't sure how to navigate the situation. I chatted with Alan, IBM D&I leader for the Hispanic community, who connected me with Cleo, a Hispanic executive council leader, who brought up an open role. I'm grateful for that connection! Long story short, I'm now part of Cleo's global sales team, where I help financial market clients find solutions with our z Systems.

Loredo: I'm grateful for the mentor who saw my potential and found a unique way to teach me complex subjects. While at Miami-Dade College, I struggled with the courses for engineering majors. My professor knew I enjoyed music and began teaching me mathematics using music as an analogy. That was my 'aha!' moment. My grades improved, allowing a transfer to the University of Miami, where I completed my bachelor's and master's degrees in computer engineering. That moment, when my professor found an unconventional way to teach, had a profound impact on me. I use that technique today. I wrote a book that teaches quantum computing implementation and I use analogies to explain it.

As a mentor, what advice do you share with mentees?

Flores: I've mentored hundreds of college students and IBM employees, including distinguished engineers and technologists. I've been told— especially by females and underrepresented minorities — that they've never seen a technologist with my level of impact, and they ask, "What's your secret to success?" This inspired me to develop the "Eight Cs: Blueprint for Success" which I believe are key attributes for attaining success: competence, communication, commitment, creativity, collaboration, confidence, community, and chuckle – we often forget about this last one, but our work should be fun!

A four-year bachelor’s degree has long been the first rung to climbing America’s corporate ladder.

But the move to prioritize skills over a college education is sweeping through some of America’s largest companies, including Google, EY, Microsoft, and Apple. Strong proponents say the shift helps circumvent a needless barrier to workplace diversity.

“I really do believe an inclusive diverse workforce is better for your company, it’s good for the business,” Ginni Rometty, former IBM CEO, told Fortune Media CEO Alan Murray during a panel last month for Connect, Fortune’s executive education community. “That’s not just altruistic.”

Under Rometty’s leadership in 2016, tech giant IBM coined the term “new collar jobs” in reference to roles that require a specific set of skills rather than a four-year degree. It’s a personal commitment for Rometty, one that hits close to home for the 40-year IBM veteran.

When Rometty was 16, her father left the family, leaving her mother, who’d never worked outside the home, suddenly in the position to provide.

“She had four children and nothing past high school, and she had to get a job to…get us out of this downward spiral,” Rometty recalled to Murray. “What I saw in that was that my mother had aptitude; she wasn’t dumb, she just didn’t have access, and that forever stayed in my mind.”

When Rometty became CEO in 2012 following the Great Recession, the U.S. unemployment rate hovered around 8%. Despite the influx of applicants, she struggled to find employees who were trained in the particular cybersecurity area she was looking for.

“I realized I couldn’t hire them, so I had to start building them,” she said.

In 2011, IBM launched a corporate social responsibility effort called the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) in Brooklyn. It’s since expanded to 11 states in the U.S. and 28 countries.

Through P-TECH, Rometty visited “a very poor high school in a bad neighborhood” that received the company’s support, as well as a community college where IBM was offering help with a technology-based curriculum and internships.

“Voilà! These kids could do the work. I didn’t have [applicants with] college degrees, so I learned that propensity to learn is way more important than just having a degree,” Rometty said.

Realizing the students were fully capable of the tasks that IBM needed moved Rometty to return to the drawing board when it came to IBM’s own application process and whom it was reaching. She said that at the time, 95% of job openings at IBM required a four-year degree. As of January 2021, less than half do, and the company is continuously reevaluating its roles.

For the jobs that now no longer require degrees and instead rely on skills and willingness to learn, IBM had always hired Ph.D. holders from the very best Ivy League schools, Rometty told Murray. But data shows that the degree-less hires for the same jobs performed just as well. “They were more loyal, higher retention, and many went on to get college degrees,” she said.

Rometty has since become cochair of OneTen, a civic organization committed to hiring, promoting, and advancing 1 million Black individuals without four-year degrees within the next 10 years.

If college degrees no longer become compulsory for white-collar jobs, many other qualifications—skills that couldn’t be easily taught in a boot camp, apprenticeship program, or in the first month on the job—could die off, too, University of Virginia Darden School of Business professor Sean Martin told Fortune last year.

“The companies themselves miss out on people that research suggests…might be less entitled, more culturally savvy, more desirous of being there,” Martin said. Rather than pedigree, he added, hiring managers should look for motivation.

That’s certainly the case at IBM. Once the company widened its scope, Rometty said, the propensity to learn quickly became more of an important hiring factor than just a degree.

SC State is host to one of 20 Cybersecurity Leadership Centers that IBM is developing with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to fill the need for trained personnel. The opportunity arrived as SC State began offering a full bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity this fall semester in addition to the minor already in place. Since 2019, SC State has been a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

SC State was one of six HBCUs that IBM initially announced as partners in the SkillsBuild effort last spring. On Wednesday, another 14 partnerships were announced, bringing the total to 20 in 11 states. Voorhees University became South Carolina’s second HBCU in the program after SC State.

Swain said IBM provides no-cost access to SC State students and faculty to customized cybersecurity curricula, innovative learning access to real world simulated cyber-attacks, access to multiple Software as a Service (SaaS) models in the IBM Cloud, and opportunities for faculty to consult with IBM cybersecurity personnel.

“This will help us to provide our students with practical skills and experience needed to be successful in ever changing landscape of cybersecurity,” Swain said.

Jordan Brown graduated from SC State in May with a degree in computer science, but he stayed on this fall to be one of the first Bulldogs to complete a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity.

“The software and courses that IBM have brought to SC State has helped both my academic and professional career tremendously,” Brown said. “I had the honor of earning an IBM Data Science Practitioner's and Design Thinking Badge through the partnership here on campus.

“IBM offers modules that break down subjects that are usually too hard to understand studying independently into interactive projects and real-world situations that relate the information to what we may experience after college. Since I earned the badges, hiring interests have increased tremendously due to the use of data scientists across almost every career field.

“I believe maintaining a partnership with IBM and SCSU will continue to allow IT and STEM students to acquire extra skills needed to get an edge in such a competitive field of work,” Brown said.

IBM staff visited the SC State campus in July for a series of workshops intended to make sure the center brings the best benefit to faculty and students at SC State. IBM’s relationship with SC State has included deployment of assets in the student labs over $1 million in estimated value. Faculty also have been being trained to teach students to use the assets maintained by IBM subject matter experts.

With 500,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs in the U.S., the need for expertise is critical. According to a recent IBM Security study, insufficiently staffed organizations average $550,000 more in breach costs than those that state they are sufficiently staffed.

TCD and IBM are collaborating on research activities and extending their pre-PhD programme to train next-gen talent in quantum, AI and security.

Trinity College Dublin (TCD) has signed a memorandum of understanding with tech giant IBM to expand their existing collaboration on education and research activities.

The deal will see the extension of a pre-PhD programme that was launched in 2021.

IBM and TCD also intend to engage in industrial partnerships in Ireland and the wider EU ecosystem. They will consider co-locating research activities with the aim of boosting joint projects and the accelerated discovery of new materials.

Researchers from TCD and IBM will work together to create new materials with targeted properties through new approaches that include the use of cloud-based, AI-driven laboratories, remote robotic laboratories and computational methods.

The aim is to significantly reduce the timescale of the discovery of important materials. These materials will potentially have impacts on environmental sustainability, energy storage and conversion, decarbonisation and polymer science. Research may also focus on the discovery of drugs and pharmaceuticals using various computational and synthetic approaches.

Prof Wolfgang Schmitt, director of research at TCD, said that both parties are “committed to research excellence”.

He added that the deal would help Ireland “to develop new partnerships between industry and academia” and help attract new industry partners to the country.

Last year, TCD also teamed up with Microsoft Ireland to advance quantum research and train talent in the sector.

TCD and IBM want to scale up their pre-PhD programme, aimed at students eventually hoping to complete a PhD in areas such as quantum computing, AI and security. Supported by IDA Ireland, it offers participants an opportunity to work with scientists tackling real-world problems while gaining hands-on industry experience.

Juan Bernabe-Moreno, director of IBM Research Europe in Ireland, said that the country is a “key part” of the company’s research ecosystem. He added that the deal was a sign of IBM’s “ever-deepening commitment to the country which dates back to 1956”.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris, TD, said that research and innovation attracts foreign direct investment and generates new ideas, technologies, skills and knowledge that can be “transformative” to the way we work and live.

“In working together, between those three important strands of academia, industry and government, we are preparing the next generation of researchers to deliver the science and technology for the challenges we face,” Harris added.

IBM has announced a new partnership with 20 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to address the cybersecurity skills gap by setting up Cybersecurity Leadership Centers. 

According to a recent study by IBM, organizations that don’t have sufficient security teams experience $550,000 more in costs related to data breaches compared to companies with sufficiently staffed security teams. 

Faculty and students at these 20 schools will be able to access coursework, lectures, immersive training experiences, certifications, IBM Cloud-hosted software, and professional development resources, for free. 

This includes access to IBM Security’s Command Center, where students can experience a simulated cyberattack to learn and practice response techniques.

IIT Madras joins IBM Quantum Network to advance quantum computing skill development and research

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has become the first Indian institution to join the IBM Quantum Network to advance quantum computing skill development and research in the country, IBM (International Business Machines) said on Monday. As member of the IBM Quantum Network, IIT Madras will get cloud-based access to IBM’s most advanced quantum computing systems and IBM’s quantum expertise to explore practical applications and realise the wide-ranging benefits of this technology for business and society.

IIT Madras’ Centre for Quantum Information, Communication and Computing (CQuICC) will focus on advancing core algorithms in research areas like Quantum Machine Learning, Quantum Optimization, and applications research in finance, a release said.

IBM Quantum services will be used alongside the open-source Qiskit framework to explore areas such as quantum algorithms, quantum machine learning, quantum error correction and error mitigation, quantum tomography, and quantum chemistry and to advance and grow the quantum computing ecosystem in the country.

Researchers from IIT Madras will lead advancement of research in the application of quantum computing with support from IBM Research India to such domains that are relevant to India, the release said. IBM and IIT Madras have a long association in education and research areas like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Last year, IIT Madras joined IBM’s Quantum Education Program to provide its students and faculty access to IBM quantum learning resources, quantum tools, and quantum systems for education and research purpose. In August last year, IBM Quantum and IIT Madras also jointly offered a course on quantum computing on the NPTEL Platform to over 10,000 participants.

The present initiative makes IIT Madras join more than 180 members of the IBM Quantum Network, a global community of Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, academic institutions, and research labs working with IBM Quantum technology to advance ‎quantum computing and explore practical applications.

The IBM Quantum team and its global ecosystem of network organisations are researching and exploring how quantum computing will help a ‎variety of industries and disciplines, including finance, energy, chemistry, materials science, ‎optimization, and machine learning. Speaking about this collaboration, Prof V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, "we intend to continue this relationship to greater heights and aim at setting up an IITM-IBM Quantum Innovation hub at IIT Madras.”

“It builds on our successful collaboration on quantum computing education, last year, and promises to open up new avenues and directions for research and innovation,” said Dr Anil Prabhakar, professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras.

“Becoming a part of the IBM Quantum Network will provide our faculty direct access to state-of- the-art quantum hardware and software. It enables us to use our interdisciplinary expertise to tackle some of the challenging problems in the domain of quantum computing today,” said Dr. Prabha Mandayam, associate professor, Department of Physics, IIT Madras.

Welcoming IIT Madras to the IBM Quantum Network, Sandip Patel, managing director of IBM India, said the collaboration will open new avenues to work with industry partners to accelerate research, make quantum real and create a vibrant quantum ecosystem in India.

"We believe the joint work will contribute towards India’s National Mission on Quantum Technologies and Applications to grow and prepare India for the future, further advancing India as one of the global powerhouses in computing,” Mr Patel said.
