Hexagon and Centennial College Support Micro-credential Certification Programs for Advanced Manufacturing

July 26, 2022 - Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division has announced its industry-education partnership with Centennial College in Toronto, ON, to support their innovative micro-credential certification program. The college, in cooperation with Unifor and the Ministry of Labour, Training, and Skills Development, has offered skills-based training at no cost to the unemployed and underemployed labor force in the advanced manufacturing sector.

Micro-credential programs allow students to explore potential career paths and earn qualifications in a condensed timeframe as compared to a full-time collegiate curriculum. Centennial College offers specialized training in three specific career streams: advanced manufacturing and production, automation and industry 4.0, and quality control and assurance. Hexagon partnered with Centennial to support the Quality control and assurance stream, and fortified the program with resources from metrology equipment to educational assets for real world applications in measurement and inspection. To learn more about Centennial College’s expanded suite of OSAP approved micro-credential programs, visit here.

The intensive micro-credential program enables students to acquire skills and knowledge in-demand for Canadian manufacturing jobs. Over a period of 16 weeks, a student commits to ten hours of online and in-person learning per week, evenings and weekends. The immersive experience in the Quality stream develops work-ready graduates earning a certification from Centennial College, in addition to a certificate from Hexagon. Centennial educators are OEM certified to train students to perform quality checks on manufactured products utilizing Hexagon’s metrology portfolio - PC-DMIS and Q-DAS software, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and portable articulating arms used for data acquisition and management, analysis, and reporting. Upon completion of the Quality stream, students also benefit from job search and placement services at the college. Earned micro-credentials are stackable, allowing students to earn a certificate of achievement upon conclusion of multiple programs.

"Centennial College is proud to offer our second round of micro-credentials in advanced manufacturing. Hexagon's digital certificate is a valuable addition to our Quality Control & Assurance stream. Because of our close collaboration with world-class companies such as Hexagon Canada, our micro-credential program has seen graduates land great entry-level positions at industry-leading companies,” said Donald Wang, chair, Advanced Manufacturing & Automation Technology, Centennial College.

Centennial’s micro-credential program has produced its first cohort of graduates, and Hexagon was among the first to hire from the Quality stream. Graduates Andrei Moreira, Abdullah Hussain, and Nathan Savoy have joined Hexagon for careers in application engineering. Graduate Nathan Savoy, now a Hexagon application engineer in the Montreal office, shared his path. “I researched the job market to gain an understanding of what skills I would need for a future in manufacturing. I had an interest in mechanical engineering, but I wanted an interactive learning environment as opposed to a long-term classroom setting. The Quality stream gave me hands-on access to metrology equipment in almost every single class. I was able to learn PC-DMIS software to program inspection routines online and offline for CMMs. The Centennial College micro-credential program enabled me to realize my personal career goals.”

“Working with higher education organizations like Centennial College is absolutely key to solving the critical workforce gap in manufacturing. For lifelong learners and people looking for a new or different line of work, these micro-credential streams enable people to develop sought-after skills in a very reasonable period of time,” stated David Hill, director of Commercial Operations–Canada, Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division.

“For decades, Hexagon has been developing industrial-strength, intensive training programs to get our customers quickly running on their metrology investments. We were very happy to support the development of the new Quality stream and add a second industry certification credential to the program. In addition, our prior work with Centennial culminated into two Quality Concepts courses for their Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering Technology advanced diploma program. In these classes, full-time students learn the fundamentals of quality assurance, inspection techniques, CMM operations and analytical software,” concluded Hill.

Killexams : PHP Tools for Testing and Debugging

1. Cucumber

I recently attended a local Ruby usergroup meeting, and was treated to an introduction to the Cucumber behavior-driven development tool. Cucumber allows you to write tests in "plain English" (or any of 30 other spoken languages) and then execute them in conjunction with a third-party tool such as Watir, Selenium, or Mechanize to execute the tests within a browser.

For instance, check out this Cucumber test (part of the Cucumber example suite), which is intended to confirm the results of a search executed through the Google search engine:

Feature: Search
  In order to learn more
  As an information seeker
  I want to find more information
  Scenario: Find what I'm looking for
    Given I am on the Google search page
    When I search for "cucumber github"
    Then I should see

Although originally written for testing Ruby on Rails applications, Cucumber can be used with many mainstream programming languages, including Java, Python and PHP. Learn more about how to configure Cucumber to test your PHP-driven websites

2. PHPUnit

Test-driven development (TDD) is all the rage these days, and for good reason. By elevating the role of testing -- insomuch that tests are developed alongside the application code rather than after much of the application code has already been written -- developers are constantly encouraged to think about the different ways in which errors or unexpected outcomes can occur. As a result, they accordingly write tests to ensure their application doesn't succumb to those errors.

The PHPUnit testing framework offers PHP developers a fantastic solution for doing TDD, offering a rigorous solution for writing, organizing and automating tests. Incorporating such a tool into your daily development routine can result in enormous productivity increases by saving you the hassle of having to test features such as the user login process manually. For instance, the Zend Framework offers support for PHPUnit, allowing me to write tests that can automate testing of the login process, as demonstrated here:

public function testValidLoginShouldAuthenticateSessionAndRedirectToHomePage()
           'email' => '',
           'pswd'  => 'secret',
           'public' => 0

This test will confirm that the account controller's login action can accept a valid email address and password, authenticate the account, redirect the user to the site's homepage, and finally confirm that a valid user session exists.

3. SimpleTest

SimpleTest is another great automated testing solution, which like PHPUnit allows developers to write unit tests using familiar PHP syntax. Additionally, SimpleTest offers several features not natively available to PHPUnit (although these features can be used with PHPUnit in conjunction with third-party tools) such as Web interface testing, including the ability to test authentication and Web forms.

For instance, the following SimpleTest test will navigate to the Google home page, insert the query "PHP" into the search field, and submit the form by clicking the Google Search button:

class SimpleFormTests extends WebTestCase {
  function testDefaultValue() {
    $this->setField('q', 'PHP');
    $this->click('Google Search');

Although not as well known as PHPUnit, SimpleTest's user-friendly approach to testing continues to earn the framework accolades among many members of the PHP community. For this reason, if you're a relative novice to programming and feel particularly intimidated by the various testing frameworks, SimpleTest may be well worth a look.

4. XDebug

Much of the time you spend testing and debugging will involve grunt work that requires you to inspect the state of your application at various stages of execution. Typically accomplished using native PHP statements such as echo and var_dump, reviewing the contents of an object can quickly become a messy affair due to the lack of coherent formatting when the object contents are output to the browser.

The XDebug PHP extension can greatly enhance the readability of this data by changing how array and object contents are output to the browser. Consider the improvements when reviewing even a simple array such as this:

$sports = array();
$sports[] = "Football";
$sports[] = "Baseball";
$sports[] = "Basketball";

For output using var_dump, the array contents will look like this:

array(3) { [0]=> string(8) "Football" [1]=> string(8) "Baseball" [2]=> string(10) "Basketball"}

However, with XDebug enabled, the array contents will appear like this:

  0 => string 'Football' (length=8)
  1 => string 'Baseball' (length=8)
  2 => string 'Basketball' (length=10)

Installed in mere minutes, XDebug is one of those tools that quickly will make you wonder how you ever got along without it. For more information about XDebug,.

5. Firebug

These days, creating great websites isn't simply a function of understanding a server-side language, with even the simplest of websites are driven by a symphony of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and a language such as PHP. Therefore, your ability to test and debug all facets of the website effectively is going to weigh heavily on your productivity. And for such purposes, there are few tools more capable than Firebug, a Firefox extension that you can use to inspect and manipulate every conceivable characteristic of a Web page.

Whether you want to see what your website looks like with all images disabled, experiment with CSS-driven font sizes, or easily measure the dimensions of a DIV using a built-in ruler, Firebug contains a seemingly endless array of useful features capable of answering any question you may have regarding your website's operation.

6. FirePHP

FirePHP extends the aforementioned Firebug's capabilities to the server side, allowing you to easily log messages and other data hailing from a PHP script. This can be tremendously useful when debugging Ajax-driven features, or when you simply want to inspect the contents of an object or array without having to repeatedly insert and delete echo or var_dump statements.

Like Firebug, FirePHP is also a Firefox extension. However you'll also need to install a simple PHP library on the server running your PHP-driven website. This script serves as the bridge for communications between the server and Firebug/FirePHP..

7. Watir

As its name implies, Watir ("Web Application Testing in Ruby") has its roots in the Ruby community, but it can be used in conjunction with a wide variety of programming languages, PHP included. The toolkit allows you to write scripts that automate browser-based tasks in order to determine whether both your Web interface and server-side application are performing as expected. These tests are written in Ruby's always easily understandable code and can perform tasks such as testing a website's login interface, as demonstrated here:

require 'rubygems'
require 'watir'
browser =
browser.goto ""
browser.text_field(:name, "email").set("")
browser.text_field(:name, "password").set("secret")
browser.button(:value, "Login").click
if browser.contains_text("Welcome back, Jason")
  puts "Test passed. Test user login successful."
  puts "Test failed. Test user did not successfully login."

Although originally natively capable of testing only Internet Explorer, numerous extensions allow you to automate testing within all of the major browsers, including Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome. Further, you can automate the execution of your Watir tests just as you can with PHPUnit using Ruby's Test::Unit framework.

8. Selenium

Like Watir, Selenium is a testing solution that allows you to verify the proper operation of your website from the user's perspective. In addition to providing developers with the ability to write scripted tests, an impressive Firefox extension known as Selenium IDE allows test developers to record tests directly from within Firefox simply by interacting with the website. These actions will then be converted into the scripts that Selenium will use to execute the tests. Scripting capabilities are supported for all of the other major browsers.

9. Human-powered Testing with

Most small businesses or open source projects lack the funding necessary to hire a full- or even part-time quality assurance team. Yet those of you in search of feedback from your fellow humans aren't out of luck, because quite a few online usability testing services can offer extremely detailed and frank feedback at a surprisingly low cost.

One such service is, which for just $39 will provide you with both video and written summaries of their testing panel's experience interacting with your website.'s services are so popular that globally recognized companies such as, Staples and Cisco have relied upon the service for unbiased third-party feedback.

10. Bug Tracking with Bugzilla

With all of these great testing and debugging utilities at your disposal, you're going to need some effective way to keep track of the problems you uncover, not to mention assign them to various team members. One of the most popular issue tracking solutions is BugZilla, an open source project used to manage issues within not only high-profile project initiatives such as the Mozilla Foundation and the Apache Software Foundation but also organizations such as NASA, Facebook and The New York Times.

Bugzilla supports all of the features you might expect in a high-quality issue tracking solution, including the ability to track the status of reported bugs, assign and change the status of bugs, and create useful reports analyzing metrics such as bug reporting frequency. Although not written in PHP, it's a Perl-based project meaning you'll be able to run it on any server capable of supporting PHP.

Killexams : Teachers: To make extended learning work, first help students get to school

Tuesday, Aug 2, 2022 11:38 Updated Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022 11:38

It’s not just a problem in Alamogordo: By the end of 2021, there were 2,010 students across New Mexico who were officially unaccounted for, Searchlight New Mexico reported. (Shelby Wyatt/Special to Source NM)

Lawmakers hear from educators on classroom time limitations and absences

As many New Mexico public schools choose not to extend their school years, teachers in Alamogordo with decades of experience say for a longer year to make sense, districts should first provide students the support they need to be able to make it into the classroom in the first place.

Legislative Education Study Committee Vice Chair Rep. G. Andrés Romero (D-Albuquerque) asked a panel of highly experienced teachers at Alamogordo Public Schools for their opinions of extended learning time near the end of a hearing on Friday inside The Tays Center at New Mexico State University’s campus in Alamogordo.

The question came two days after the head of the state Public Education Department told lawmakers that it is “not acceptable” that school districts aren’t using $400 million meant to extend the number of days in the school year.

Alamogordo Public Schools extended its previous school year by 10 days, said Melanie Hallbeck, a government and economics teacher at Alamogordo High School. She is opposed to statewide pressure and said districts should be able to choose.

The amount of days already allotted for public education in New Mexico is “incredibly sufficient,” she said.

“I don’t think it’s effective unless the systems are in place already for effective learning,” she said. “I don’t necessarily agree that quantity is better than quality.”

Sarah Johnston, a teaching coach in Alamogordo, questioned whether extended learning time is something that can work if schools cannot get students to come to class.

The Alamogordo district had difficulty tracking down students over the past year, she said, so it created a task force that works with teachers to find students and figure out why they’re absent.

“They’ve been working really hard – sometimes going door to door – just trying to figure out where they’re at and how they’re doing, and how we can pull them back into our schools,” she said.

It’s not just a problem in Alamogordo: By the end of 2021, there were 2,010 students across New Mexico who were officially unaccounted for, Searchlight New Mexico reported.

How teachers and students spend time in the classroom has a greater effect on the quality of education than the length of the school year, Hallbeck said.

Hallbeck, who graduated from Capitan High School in 1990, said she said her education from that very small school with very limited technology, “is the equivalent of anything I could have gotten anywhere in the country.”

“What that comes down to, I believe, is the quality of educators that you have in the classroom, the quality of support professionals that you have in the school building, and the ability and the time to teach and the time to learn,” she said.

If you can reduce the amount of white noise that comes at teachers and students all the time about other things that have to get done, Hallbeck said, you can focus on the meat and potatoes of teaching and learning.

A lot of students’ time is taken up with multiple tests, while teachers’ time is taken up preparing and assessing those tests, Hallbeck said. Teachers are also required to go through a lot of impractical training that doesn’t have tangible results in the classroom, she said.

Districts are not required to participate in extended learning, and Hallbeck said she does not think they should be.

“So I am not a proponent of extended learning time or K5 Plus, unless a school district actively chooses that and sees it as a very essential need,” she said.

District officials are trying to help students navigate the underlying issues that may be causing the attendance problems, Hallbeck said, by allowing teachers to refer them to “The Hub” where there are services, social workers and health care in one place.

Jackie Holycross, an English teacher at Alamogordo High School, said it’s important to find out why a student is absent.

“We can put all the systems in place, but we need to know what’s going on in their lives,” she said. “Parent contact is a huge part of that.”

She said the district lets teachers take the time to contact parents of students who don’t show up. She saw more attendance simply from telling parents that their student was missing or from texting the student: “What’s going on in your life? Why aren’t you here?”

But it does take time, she acknowledged, which is in short supply for teachers.

Romero said lawmakers should think about what the school day for teachers looks like, how that is divided up, and provide them the leeway to do what they need to do. He is a social studies teacher and said he often calls parents on weekends because he doesn’t have time during the school day.

“For all of us here, how that school day looks for educators, not just the school year, is something we need to keep in mind,” he said.

The National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) has honored Gateway Technical College by recognizing its students for industry-focused skills training excellence. NC3 has officially named the school a 2022 Dennis Iudice Memorial Award winner for the number of industry-recognized certifications students earned in its programs in 2021.

“I am honored to receive recognition from the National Coalition of Certification Centers,” said Gateway Technical College President and CEO Bryan Albrecht. “It’s an organization I admire for their commitment to supporting educators and students through world-class industry partnerships.”

NC3 aims to build a workforce prepared to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s industries by connecting employers and educational institutions in synergistic partnerships. Through these partnerships, the relationships foster effective training, the elevation of skilled careers, and employment opportunities.

Gateway ranks third overall

Certifications from NC3 may be easily added to the classroom first as a foundational skillset, as it has been at Gateway. A total of 2,117 certifications were awarded to students attending Gateway and enrolled in programs. This is the third most of all NC3-participating colleges in the nation. These are industry-acknowledged certifications that lead to career success. The announcement was made on July 21 at the NC3 2022 Leadership Summit: an event that brings collegiate and business leaders from across the country to Gateway for the national summit.

“This award showcases the dedication of our students and faculty,” said Matt Janisin, vice president, Gateway Business and Workforce Solutions Division. “It showcases faculty for continually aligning their curriculum to industry skills and students for becoming a certified pro in their chosen profession. Gateway is honored to be recognized as a national leader in career and technical education.”

Killexams : Teaching Students With Learning Differences: Results of a National Survey

When teachers use research-based practices and strategies to serve students with learning differences, they promote equity in education and help to develop the nation’s future workforce. A clearer understanding of the degree to which teachers implement such practices can inform efforts to Excellerate teacher preparation and training.

In 2021, the EdWeek Research Center fielded a survey to learn more about teachers’ perspectives regarding instructional practices that can help students with learning differences to succeed. In the survey, researchers defined this population to include students with specific learning disabilities (such as dyslexia) and students with other processing challenges that can impact learning (such as attention deficits). The study’s definition of this group included students who had been formally identified for special education services and those who had not been identified for such services but experienced learning challenges.

Effective approaches for teaching these students have taken on even more critical importance due to the coronavirus pandemic. When schools were forced to abruptly switch to remote learning in early 2020 to curtail the spread of virus, students of all backgrounds experienced unprecedented disruptions to their learning and their daily lives. There is widespread concern that those changes have caused many students to miss out on key academic content and to face mental health difficulties. Students with disabilities and learning differences, in particular, lost existing services and supports. The pandemic also made it more difficult for educators to identify students in need of special education services. Implementation of instructional best practices will be vital in helping them recover lost ground.

The survey examined teachers’ perspectives on effective practices, their implementation of those instructional strategies, and the broader beliefs that impact their approaches to teaching. This report outlines survey findings. The goal of the research is to provide resources that help to guide teacher training and to boost teachers’ use of effective strategies.

Killexams : Evolution Academy Charter School Expands Community Healthcare Worker Certification

Open enrollment for the program available for Dallas, Houston and Beaumont campuses

DALLAS, Aug. 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Evolution Academy Charter School, along with Texas Education Agency and Region 10 Education Service Center, now offers a Community Health Worker (CHW) Certification as an option to help students prepare for the workforce as part of its College and Career Readiness requirements.

Community Health Workers (CHWs) are non-medical public health workers who connect communities to health care and social service providers. CHWs have been identified by many titles, such as Community Health Advisors, lay health advocates, promotoras, outreach educators or community health representatives. Community Health Workers are a necessary link for hospitals, churches, insurance companies and nonprofits to connect with diverse populations and promote healthy behaviors.

This is the first year this program was offered to high school students and Evolution Academy Charter School Richardson took advantage of the opportunity by enrolling fourteen students to participate in the pilot program in partnership with Region 10. These students were required to meet 120 hours of core competency in eight areas: communication, interpersonal skills, service coordination, capacity building skills, advocacy skills, teaching skills, organization and knowledge base.

"Our students completed individual and group projects. They also gained hands-on experience by hosting a Health & Wellness Fair as well as a blood drive earlier this spring," said Cynthia Trigg, superintendent and founder, Evolution Academy Charter School. "We are so proud of all the work they have accomplished and for the jumpstart this certification will provide them in their careers."

Seven students have completed the program thus far. These students will receive their Community Health Worker Certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services and Region 10 Education Service Center, which will allow them to have an advantage at landing a job in the healthcare Industry.

Following the success at the Richardson campus, Evolution Academy is now launching the Community Health Worker Certification program on all three of its campuses, located in the Dallas, Houston, and Beaumont, Texas. Programs like this support Evolution Academy's ability to provide students with access to college, career and military readiness skills while they earn a high school diploma, ultimately providing students with increased opportunities post-graduation.
