Killexams : Add An OSHW Certified Stopwatch To Your Toolkit

[MakingDevices] has created a simple stopwatch that makes for a nice introduction to surface mount electronic design and assembly. The project is open source hardware (OSHW) certified, with Gerbers, KiCAD files, and software all available.

Conceptually the stopwatch is straight forward, with a row of two four digit seven-segment displays being driven by a PIC18LF14k50 microcontroller through multiple NPN transistors. The PIC doesn’t quite have enough data lines to drive the two displays at once so an inverter is used to toggle between the two seven-segment blocks.

The circuit is continuously powered from a CR2032 coin cell battery. For normal usage with display, [MakingDevices] estimates 30+ hours of operation and 140+ hours without display, but still counting time. When idle, the “Extreme Low-Power (XLP)” capabilities of the PIC put the operating window estimates well beyond the self discharge of the coin cell battery. There’s an in circuit serial programming (ICSP) footprint that accepts a pogo pin TC2030-MCP-NL adapter for flashing the PIC.

Don’t let the simplicity fool you, this is a well documented project with detailed posts about the design, simulation and battery consumption. Various videos and glamour shots supply a whole picture of the process, from design, assembly, testing to final validation.

It’d be wonderful to see the project extended or hacked on further, perhaps with a cute enclosure or case.

Killexams : EP PEGA Committee to investigate Greek spyware scandal on the ground

The committee set up by European Parliament to look into the spy and surveillance software scandal, known as PEGA is set to travel to Greece and Cyprus to interview key witnesses on the ground.

PEGA will visit the two countries in early November to investigate reports of the illegal use of spyware against citizens, including politicians and journalists. The scandal came to light when EP member and Greek socialist party leader Nikos Androulakis filed a report after European parliament authorities detected traces of Predator software on his phone.

EP Vice-President Dimitris Papadimoulis told EURACTIV on Monday that attempts by the Greek government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will not fly in Brussels.

“A vast majority from the Left, including members of the EPP and the committee’s rapporteur, Sophie in ‘t Veldt, that belongs to Macron’s group, are determined to get to the bottom of this, which is also proven by the request to investigate surveillance through Europol”.

PEGA released a document on Monday asking Europol Executive Director Catherine de Bolle to suggest further investigations into spyware abuses in Europe.

The mission to Greece and Cyprus will include meetings with the Cypriot and Greek parliament, ministers, the owner of Interlexa (the firm that provides Predator), its CEO, and other critical witnesses. The EP Committee will also meet with targeted politicians and journalists.

The majority-controlled Greek parliamentary committee, which looked into the spyware scandal starting on September 7th and concluded its works on September 30th, blocked the testimonies of most of those directly involved with Predator, such as the owner and the CEO of Interlexa.

After Papadimoulis released the agenda, Jeroen Lenaers, chair of the PEGA committee and EPP member, wrote on Twitter that this would be “only a very very first draft agenda, for internal administrative use only, that has not been shared even with the political groups, let alone with potential interlocutors”. He attacked Papadimoulis saying “it’s disgraceful that a vice-president of the European Parliament would share such an internal draft document for domestic political purposes.”

However, sources at the European Parliament told EURACTiV that Lenaers had upvoted the proposed schedule for the PEGA investigative mission to Athens and Nicosia.

Killexams : Helper 'parks' wheelchair-bound elderly at roadside to buy lottery

Helper 'parks' wheelchair-bound elderly at roadside to buy lottery

A helper apparently 'parked' a wheelchair-bound woman in between two stationary cars by the roadside in Serangoon Gardens and then went to buy lottery.

Stomp contributor J was concerned to see this on Wednesday (Oct 12), at around 5.05pm.

Photos show the elderly woman left in between two parked cars while the helper was in the queue at a Gerk Chwee Trading (an authorised retailer of Singapore Pools) outlet.

J told Stomp: "Helper parked granny on the road between two cars and went to buy her $4.5 million TOTO."

J acknowledged that the helper might have been buying lottery on behalf of the elderly woman, but felt that what she did was unsafe regardless.

The Stomp contributor added: "I should have just told the helper off and reminded her that it was extremely dangerous to leave granny on the road alone."

In a separate incident just a day later (Oct 13), another Stomp contributor shared how she spotted a domestic helper behaving intimately with a man at Waterway Point while looking after her young charges.

Killexams : New Domestic Helper Law comes into force from December 15
UAE750x500

Under the new law, which will come into effect on 15th December 2022, domestic helpers may not be recruited from their home country before being informed of the nature of work and the wages.

The new law on domestic helpers aims to regulate the employment relationship of domestic helpers in the UAE, as well as set and balance the rights and responsibilities of all relevant parties involved, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) said on Tuesday.

Under the new law, which will come into effect on 15th December 2022, domestic helpers may not be recruited from their home country before being informed of the nature of work and the wages, as well as presenting evidence of their fitness, health, psychological, and professional competence to complete the work required.

Recruitment offices, whether directly or through third parties, are prohibited from accepting a commission in return for obtaining work or incurring any expenses from the domestic helpers.

The decree also covers the obligations of recruitment agents, which include treating domestic helpers in a humane way, not exposing them to violence, and raising their awareness of the relevant authorities they must contact if their rights are violated.

Agents must also provide domestic helpers with a booklet with details of their wages or other related information to ensure that they receive the correct wages, in line with the mechanisms determined by MoHRE.

Recruitment agents must cover the cost of returning domestic helpers to their home countries and either provide a substitute helper or refund the amount paid by the employer, in line with the decisions issued by the ministry.

"The UAE continues to establish a legislative framework that safeguards domestic helpers, in line with its mission to establish the country’s pioneering status as a preferred global destination to live and work,” the ministry stressed in a statement.

"The ministry is eager on building on the UAE’s achievements in supporting domestic helpers by committing to its role in overseeing the enforcing laws, decisions, and legislation that would regulate recruitment and employment of domestic helpers in line with international best practices during the contractual period.”

"The new law sets a comprehensive legal framework that outlines the obligations of both parties and helps recruitment offices to provide exceptional services that achieve comfort, satisfaction, and happiness for employers and employees alike. It also protects the rights of domestic helpers and meets the aspirations of both parties, which contributes to reduced labour disputes and enhances the UAE’s competitiveness.”

The decree-law identifies the responsibilities of employers, which include maintaining the appropriate environment for performing the agreed upon work; providing suitable living accommodations for the domestic helpers; providing meals and appropriate clothing to enable the helpers to perform their duties as long as they were hired on a full-time basis and not on temporary contracts, except if agreed otherwise.

The employer’s obligations also include paying the wages of domestic helpers as per their contracts; covering the costs of medical treatment for domestic helpers under the framework the UAE’s health system; treating domestic helpers in a manner that preserves their dignity and integrity.

Furthermore, the employer may not make the domestic helper work for others except if this is part of the terms and conditions as stipulated in the executive order of the decree-law and the decisions issued by MoHRE.

The employer is also prohibited from employing any domestic helper unless he or she is licenced to do so. Also, the domestic helper should not be asked to work for others or in a profession different from the nature of his work mentioned in the work permit, except under the helper’s consent and if it is one of the professions mentioned in the executive regulations of this law-decree.

The decree gives the domestic helper the right to keep his/her own identification documents while granting the heirs of the domestic helper who died during service the wage for the month in which he/she died and any other entitlements.

The decree dealt with the obligations of the domestic helper, as it stipulated that he or she must perform the work according to the direction and supervision of the employer and in accordance with what is specified in the contract, take the necessary care and not stop work without an acceptable excuse, in addition to observing the customs and traditions of the UAE society and adhering to public morals and the instructions of the employer regarding the implementation of the agreed work unless it is in violation of the contract, the law, public morals, or what exposes it to danger or legal accountability.

The domestic helper must also respect the privacy of the workplace, preserve the employer’s property, work tools and everything in his custody, and not use them outside work except with the approval of the employer, and not to work under any form except under a work permit issued to him/her by the ministry and in accordance with the applicable conditions.

The new law stipulates that the recruitment or temporary employment of domestic helpers shall not be allowed unless after obtaining a licence from the ministry, and that the recruitment or employment of domestic helpers shall not be permitted except in accordance with the conditions and procedures stipulated in this Law and its Executive Regulations.

It also stipulates that the recruitment or employment of a domestic helper under the age of 18 is prohibited, and in the event of the recruitment or temporary employment of domestic helpers, there must be no discrimination among them on the basis of race, sex, religion, nationality, social status, or disability, which would weaken equal opportunities or prejudice equality in obtaining or continuing a job and enjoying its rights. It also prevents any form of forced labour or any practice that falls within the framework of human trafficking in accordance with the laws issued by the country or ratified agreements.

According to the law, the domestic helper is entitled to a weekly rest day as determined by the executive regulations of this law. The helper may be employed on his or her weekly rest day but in this case he/she is entitled to an alternative rest day or a cash equivalent to that day, and the helper’s daily rest must not be less than 12 hours per day, subject to a minimum of at least eight continuous hours’ rest.

The annual leave should not be less than 30 paid days for each year, and if the domestic helper is asked to work during all or part of his/her annual leave, and the period is not carried over to the following year, the employer must grant the helper the wages plus a leave allowance equal to his/her wages for the days he/she worked in that period, bearing in mind that the domestic helper may not be asked to work during his/her annual leave more than once during two consecutive years.

If the domestic helper wishes to travel to the home country to spend his/her annual leave, the employer shall pay the value of a two-way ticket once for every two years, and if the two parties agree to terminate or not renew the employment contract after the annual leave, the employer shall pay for a one-way ticket only.

The law grants the domestic helper the right to transfer to a new employer, provided that all contractual requirements specified in the contract are fulfilled, taking into account the rights of the original employer, and in accordance with the conditions and procedures in force by the ministry, and the employer shall not be bound by the expenses of the helper returning to his/her country if he/she joins another job, in accordance with the provisions of this Law and its Executive Regulations.

According to the law, in the event of a dispute between the employer and the domestic helper and the inability to settle it amicably, it must be referred to MoHRE, which has the right to take a decision as it deems appropriate to settle the dispute amicably in accordance with the procedures stipulated in the executive regulations of this law. If an amicable settlement is not possible within the specified period, the dispute shall be referred to the competent court.

The law obliges both the parties to the contract with the approved occupational health and safety requirements and health prevention methods in accordance with the provisions of the executive regulations of this law and any other legislation in force in the country.

The law stipulates that the contract is concluded between the office of domestic helpers’ recruitment and the employer to regulate the obligations related to the recruitment of the domestic helper, provided that the contract includes in particular the period specified for the implementation of the recruitment procedures and the conditions specified by the employer for the domestic helper whom the office is entrusted to recruit, in addition to the basic rights and obligations that the employer is obligated by towards the helper, especially the type of work, the wages and the financial obligations necessary for the travel of the domestic helper from his/her home country to the UAE, and in return for the services.

The Law allows the employer to refuse to employ the domestic helper if the recruitment office violates the terms agreed upon in the contract. In this case, the provisions stipulated in the executive regulations of this Law and any relevant decisions issued by the ministry regarding the provision of an alternative domestic helper or reimbursement of recruitment fees to the employer should be applied, without prejudice to the right of the employer to demand compensation from the recruitment office for any damage that the employer may incur as a result of the contract breach.

Killexams : Certified nursing assistants do important work. They deserve to be paid a living wage for it

In mid-April 2020, as Covid-19 shutdowns and lockdowns were being put in place across the U.S., my grandmother’s health started to decline. With so many unknowns, the assisted living facility where she lived, like most others, had a strict no-visitors policy. When it became clear that my grandmother was in her last hours of life, the facility figured out how to safely allow my aunt into the building for my grandmother’s last breaths.

When my aunt arrived, certified nursing assistants were there, providing comfort and care throughout my grandmother’s passing. At the time, doctors and nurses were being lauded as heroes. CNAs didn’t get that acclaim, though they should have.

Under the supervision of registered nurses, certified nursing assistants provide care in individuals’ homes, nursing homes, subacute/rehab centers, assisted living facilities, and a variety of other settings. Their work is both physically and emotionally taxing. They are responsible for helping their patients with activities of daily living like eating, bathing and grooming, lifting and moving them, making beds, and cleaning living spaces, as well as communicating their patients’ needs to their health care teams and families.

advertisement

Certified nurse assistants also provide their patients with companionship during difficult and lonely times.

Despite all that they do, CNAs they are not well paid. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly rate for a certified nursing assistant is $14.83 but, in some states, they make less than $10 an hour. That’s less than many Starbucks or McDonald’s workers are paid.

advertisement

Most of this undervalued workforce is comprised of women and people of color. The U.S. Census Bureau says women consist of nearly 90% of the nursing assistant workforce. A report by PHI, a nonprofit organization working to Excellerate long-term care services and job quality for direct-care workers, estimates that people of color make up the majority of the nursing assistant workforce, even though they make up one-quarter of the total U.S. workforce. More than one-third of these workers are Black or African American.

Improving job quality for the direct-care workforce is also a matter of racial and gender equity.

Not only are certified nursing assistants underpaid, but they must also spend money before they can earn it. To be certified, they are required to participate in a state-approved training program that can cost anywhere from $400 to $3,000 for a federally mandated minimum of 75 hours (though some states require more) — with limited information about the success rates of these programs — and they must also pay for the cost of final state exams, ranging from $80 to $105.

I recently had the opportunity to work on a team exploring the challenges facing the certified nursing assistant workforce in Massachusetts and across the country as part of the Project on Workforce, a collaborative project between Harvard’s Kennedy School, Business School, and Graduate School of Education. Our team found that only nine states and the District of Columbia offered public information about the average pass rate for the written and clinical test in 2019. In other words, many individuals are assuming the costs of required certification programs with limited knowledge about whether the state-approved training program they enroll in will properly prepare them for the state CNA certification exams and ultimately lead to a return on their investment.

These barriers to entry are at odds with the shortage of health care staff, including certified nursing assistants, in long-term care facilities and for in-home care across the U.S. Many people assume that the shortage is a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. That’s not so: the pandemic only intensified an already-existing shortage of health care staff in long-term care.

Improving working conditions and wages for certified nursing assistants is not only the right thing to do, but smart public policy. Given that Medicaid is the top funding source for nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, increasing Medicaid funding with an appropriated portion for increasing wages of nursing assistants and other lower-paid health care workers can help support these integral health care staff members and address workforce retainment. In addition, states could design CNA tenure and promotion programs, like the recently implemented Illinois CNA Subsidy/Incentive Program, which provides certified nursing assistants with wage increases based on their years of experience, to help keep wages competitive and create career pathways.

Some Americans don’t know what certified nursing assistants do, or why they are needed. Others know it all too well. I often hear people say that, given the low pay, nursing assistants must truly care about helping others and that “it is a calling.” Whether it is a calling or not, these essential workers have bills to pay and families to support. As the minimum wage in many states across the country increases, wages for CNAs need to stay competitive. If an individual can make the same or more money in another industry, with a less strenuous and emotionally taxing position, there is little incentive to join the CNA work force, or stay in it.

I will forever be thankful to the certified nursing assistants who cared for my grandmother during her last few days of life. As an important element of the U.S. health care system, these essential health care workers need to be treated with the same dignity and respect with which they treat our loved ones. We can start by paying them a living wage.

The new program, called Certified Select, also covers certain non-Nissan vehicles for the first time. While the update offers added peace of mind when buying an older vehicle, shoppers should note that the program’s limited warranty is significantly truncated compared to the one for newer models.

Certified Select: What’s Included?

Previously, the brand’s CPO program only applied to used Nissan models up to 6 years old. The Certified Select program now covers used Nissan and some non-Nissan vehicles up to 10 years old with up to 100,000 miles on the odometer. Two key benefits of the program include an 84-point inspection and a six-month/6,000-mile limited warranty. The limited warranty covers any repairs that fall outside of the original manufacturer’s limited warranty for breakdowns related to the engine, transmission, transfer case, hybrid or electric vehicle components, drivetrain and replacement parts.

The program’s bonus perks include complimentary 24-hour roadside assistance, one complimentary maintenance visit in the first year of ownership, car rental reimbursement and a three-month complimentary trial of SiriusXM.

Nissan Certified: What’s Different?

Nissan’s standard Certified CPO program covers vehicles up to 6 years old with up to 80,000 miles and includes a notably longer seven-year/100,000-mile limited warranty. Nissan Certified cars also get a more robust 167-point inspection and a one-year complimentary maintenance plan that includes up to two oil and filter replacements and two tire rotations.

The Common Denominators

Shoppers can search for both Certified and Certified Select vehicles online via the Nissan At Home tool, which enables browsing, scheduling test drives and completing the purchase online. A participating dealer can then deliver the vehicle to the shopper’s home. Additionally, the limited warranties for each CPO category are transferable from the original shopper to one private party owner for the duration of the warranty term.
