Later this month, HP Enterprise will ship what looks to be the first server aimed specifically at AI inferencing for machine learning.
Machine learning is a two-part process, training and inferencing. Training is usign powerful GPUs from Nvidia and AMD or other high-performance chips to “teach” the AI system what to look for, such as image recognition.
Inference answers if the subject is a match for trained models. A GPU is overkill for that task, and a much lower power processor can be used.
Enter Qualcomm's Cloud AI100 chip, which is designed for artificial intelligence on the edge. It has up to 16 "AI cores" and supports FP16, INT8, INT16, FP32 data formats, all of which are used in inferencing. These are not custom Arm processors, they are entirely new SoCs designed for inferencing.
The AI100 is a part of the HPE Edgeline EL8000 edge gateway system that integrates compute, storage, and management in a single edge device. Inference workloads are often larger in scale and often require low-latency and high-throughput to enable real-time results.
The HPE Edgeline EL8000 is a 5U system that supports up to four independent server blades clustered using dual-redundant chassis-integrated switches. Its little brother, the HPE Edgeline EL8000t is a 2U design supports two independent server blades.
In addition to performance, Cloud AI100 has a low power draw. It comes in two form factors, a PCI Express card and dual M.2 chips mounted on the motherboard. The PCIe card has a 75 watt power envelope while the two M.2 form factor units draw either 15 watts or 25 watts. A typical CPU is draws more than 200 watts, and a GPU over 400 watts.
Qualcomm says Cloud AI 100 supports all key industry-standard model formats including ONNX, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Caffe that can be imported and prepared from pre-trained models that can be compiled and optimized for deployment. Qualcomm has a set of tools for model porting and preparation including support for custom operations.
Qualcomm says the Cloud AI100 is targeting manufacturing/industrial customers, as well as those with edge AI requirements. Use cases for AI inference computing at the edge include computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) workloads.
For computer vision, this could include quality control and quality assurance in manufacturing, object detection and video surveillance, and loss prevention and detection. For NLP it ncludes programming-code generation, smart assistant operations, and language translation.
Edgeline servers will be available for purchase or lease through HPE GreenLake later this month.

I’m personally not a big believer in annual trends. I see more continuous shifts that blur into each other over years. Of late, what we see more than a central shift is fragmentation. Influences that have become much more non-linear. Here are some of the big shifts in consumer behaviour and society:

Personal taste as a driver:
So far, the main purchase drivers were affordability, status and belonging to a cohort. The idea of who I am and what I like corresponds to a more crystalised view of personality; the desire to be distinct rather than part of a group. We’ve begun to see a desire to define a personal style and aesthetic, a set of things I do and things I don’t. This is likely to result in more experimentation in grooming at a mainstream level.
In food, the desire for experimentation coexists with a desire for health:
Consumers want these trends to be located in the same place, which requires some reconciliation since they can move in opposite directions. In metros this is driving the idea of authenticity. Food that is also storytelling, particularly when you eat out, is a very big trend. In smaller towns you see an opening out of the palate with multi-cuisine options still being the favourites.
The rise of the professional consumer:
Consumer choices are increasingly based on the quality of experience. As a result, individual brands and options are finding a market. This is because consumers are turning into producers. The idea of creating something based on what you like and your own consumption patterns is catching on, instead of what there’s supposed to be a market for. We are seeing new kinds of brands emerge that speak to people of a particular mindset. More sophisticated consumers lead consumption rather than following. And a desire to reconstruct the past to seek that: whether it is in the reaction against jallikattu or the rise of identity politics.
Women have more freedom but less independence:
Women enjoy a greater practical, everyday level of freedom. We are simultaneously finding a rise in attacks and the issue of safety. The men are feeling threatened and the reaction is an attempt to reclaim masculinity; an imagined masculinity seen in cinema. Salman Khan, for instance, is a fantastic form of masculinity, not set up against any real conflicts. It creates a spectacle but is not trying to claim anything higher than that. We are also seeing a similar twofold narrative when it comes to marginalised sections of society. We’ve seen a sense of confidence and movement in Dalit enterprise but that equally creates anxiety. We are at a stage where these are becoming big and significant enough to create countermovements and backlashes.

Here's how the Honors Thesis course, HON 4V87, is generally structured:
Students enroll in the variable hour class, HON 4V87, usually for 2 credit hours during each of their final two semesters (for a total of 4 hours).
Students are placed into a section of HON 4V87 with their thesis mentor as faculty of record.
Grades for the thesis are awarded by the thesis mentor at the end of each semester.
Thesis grades are either "credit" or "no credit" as determined by the thesis advisor.
Specific expectations and deadlines are provided to enrolled students in a semester-specific syllabus each term.
Prerequisites and Course Requirements
During the final two semester before graduation, Honors Program seniors most often enroll in HON 4V87 for two credit hours during each semester. (HON 4V87 is a variable hour class, so the student must specify the number of credit hours for which they are enrolling). In this manner, the Honors Program senior submits a major portion of the thesis project, viz., half the thesis during each term (see “Thesis-Chapter Submissions” below). In most cases, students officially beginning this sequence of Honors Thesis courses should have already completed:
Honors Colloquium (HON 3200)
At least one upper-level Honors contract/unit (usually via an Honors course contract in a 3000- or 4000-level class)
Both Advanced Readings courses (HON 3100 and 3101); andtherefore
The formal thesis proposal (one of the requirements for HON 3101)
During the penultimate semester, then, students will generally submit two complete chapters of the Honors thesis. Though these submissions are subject to further revision, they must be more exacting and more polished than mere first drafts.
During the graduation semester, students write and submit the remainder of the chapters of the thesis. The full-draft version of the thesis is often due (at the latest) around Spring Break for May graduates. This final draft of the thesis must be polished and submitted to a faculty committee for an oral defense. After the successful defense, the student then submits a final, properly formatted thesis to the Honors Program office for binding. (Other, smaller-scale requirements will be announced and explained in the relevant syllabus each semester).

Canon's Pixma MP160 is an "all-in-one" consumer color inkjet printer that can scan documents and images onto your computer's hard drive or print them. You can use the MP160 to scan documents such as tax papers, book pages or a school syllabus, then, once they are on your computer, email them, archive them for your records or use them as part of a digital project.
Open the MP Navigator software that was included with the MP160. If you haven't yet installed the software, insert the software disc into your computer and then follow the installation instructions as they appear. Once finished, click the program's icon to open it.
Press "Scan" on the MP160 if you're using the printer for the first time; otherwise you can skip this step. A list of software options will appear. Use the arrow keys to select "MP Navigator," then press the "OK" button.
Open the scanner lid. Lay your document face-down onto the glass so that one of its corners is flush with the designated corner of the scanner's glass; this corner has a slight marking that sets it apart from the other three corners. Close the scanner lid.
Press the "Scan" button. The MP160 will scan your document and transfer it to the MP Navigator software on your computer, where you can then adjust the resulting document image and save it to your computer.
