Last week the computing world celebrated an important anniversary: the UNIX operating system turned 50 years old. What was originally developed in 1969 as a lighter weight timesharing system for a DEC minicomputer at Bell Labs has exerted a huge influence over every place that we encounter computing, from our personal and embedded devices to the unseen servers in the cloud. But in a story that has seen countless twists and turns over those five decades just what is UNIX these days?

The official answer to that question is simple. UNIX® is any operating system descended from that original Bell Labs software developed by Thompson, Ritchie et al in 1969 and bearing a licence from Bell Labs or its successor organisations in ownership of the UNIX® name. Thus, for example, HP-UX as shipped on Hewlett Packard’s enterprise machinery is one of several commercially available UNIXes, while the Ubuntu Linux distribution on which this is being written is not.

The real answer is considerably less clear, and depends upon how much you view UNIX as an ecosystem and how much instead depends upon heritage or specification compliance, and even the user experience. Names such as GNU, Linux, BSD, and MINIX enter the fray, and you could be forgiven for asking: would the real UNIX please stand up?

In the beginning, it was a relatively contiguous story. The Bell Labs team produced UNIX, and it was used internally by them and eventually released as source to interested organisations such as universities who ran it for themselves. A legal ruling from the 1950s precluded AT&T and its subsidiaries such as Bell Labs from selling software, so this was without charge. Those universities would take their UNIX version 4 or 5 tapes and install it on their DEC minicomputer, and in the manner of programmers everywhere would write their own extensions and improvements to fit their needs. The University of California did this to such an extent that by the late 1970s they had released it as their own distribution, the so-called Berkeley Software Distribution, or BSD. It still contained some of the original UNIX code so was still technically a UNIX, but was a significant departure from that codebase.

UNIX had by then become a significant business proposition for AT&T, owners of Bell Labs, and by extension a piece of commercial software that attracted hefty licence fees once Bell Labs was freed from its court-imposed obligations. This in turn led to developers seeking to break away from their monopoly, among them Richard Stallman whose GNU project started in 1983 had the aim of producing an entirely open-source UNIX-compatible operating system. Its name is a recursive acronym, “Gnu’s Not UNIX“, which states categorically its position with respect to the Bell Labs original, but provides many software components which, while they might not be UNIX as such, are certainly a lot like it. By the end of the 1980s it had been joined in the open-source camp by BSD Net/1 and its descendants newly freed from legacy UNIX code.

In the closing years of the 1980s Andrew S. Tanenbaum, an academic at a Dutch university, wrote a book: “Operating Systems: Design and Implementation“. It contained as its teaching example a UNIX-like operating system called MINIX, which was widely adopted in universities and by enthusiasts as an accessible alternative to UNIX that would run on inexpensive desktop microcomputers such as i386 PCs or 68000-based Commodore Amigas and Atari STs. Among those enthusiasts in 1991 was a University of Helsinki student, Linus Torvalds, who having become dissatisfied with MINIX’s kernel set about writing his own. The result which was eventually released as Linux soon outgrew its MINIX roots and was combined with components of the GNU project instead of GNU’s own HURD kernel to produce the GNU/Linux operating system that many of us use today.

So, here we are in 2019, and despite a few lesser known operating systems and some bumps in the road such as Caldera Systems’ attempted legal attack on Linux in 2003, we have three broad groupings in the mainstream UNIX-like arena. There is “real” closed-source UNIX® such as IBM AIX, Solaris, or HP-UX, there is “Has roots in UNIX” such as the BSD family including MacOS, and there is “Definitely not UNIX but really similar to it” such as the GNU/Linux family of distributions. In terms of what they are capable of, there is less distinction between them than vendors would have you believe unless you are fond of splitting operating-system hairs. Indeed even users of the closed-source variants will frequently find themselves running open-source code from GNU and other origins.

At 50 years old then, the broader UNIX-like ecosystem which we’ll take to include the likes of GNU/Linux and BSD is in great shape. At our level it’s not worth worrying too much about which is the “real” UNIX, because all of these projects have benefitted greatly from the five decades of collective development. But it does raise an interesting question: what about the next five decades? Can a solution for timesharing on a 1960s minicomputer continue to adapt for the hardware and demands of mid-21st-century computing? Our guess is that it will, not in that your UNIX clone in twenty years will be identical to the one you have now, but the things that have kept it relevant for 50 years will continue to do so for the forseeable future. We are using UNIX and its clones at 50 because they have proved versatile enough to evolve to fit the needs of each successive generation, and it’s not unreasonable to expect this to continue. We look forward to seeing the directions it takes.

We’ll get to that part of it in a minute. We received a DMCA Takedown Notice from Tektronix (which you can read after the break) demanding that we remove the post. We have altered the original post, but we believe our coverage of this story is valid and we don’t agree that the post should be completely removed.

First off, Tektronix sells the modules to unlock the features already present on the Oscilloscope in questions. We’re operating on the moral assumption that using these features without paying their asking price is wrong. If you want the features they’ve developed you should pay for them.

The real story here is that Tektronix designed a woefully weak system for unlocking these modules. Learn from this. If you’re ever designing a hardware key, don’t do it like this!

An EEPROM, a connector, and a plain text string of characters which is already published publicly on their website is all that is necessary to unlock these “crippled” features. Let’s just say that again: apparently every hardware key is the same and just uses a plain-text string found on their website which is not encrypted or obfuscated. If you were selling these keys for $2.99 perhaps this would be adequate, but Tek values these modules at $500 apiece.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — U.S. wildlife managers are being sued over their new management rule for the endangered Mexican gray wolf, with a coalition of environmentalists saying the recently adopted court-ordered changes fail to address genetic concerns and limit the predators from roaming bigger swaths of the American Southwest.

The rule, released before a July 1 deadline, was the result of another years-long legal battle over the predators. Among other things, it outlines when and how wolves can be removed from the wild or released from captivity.

In a complaint filed in U.S. district court in Arizona, the Center for Biological Diversity and Defenders of Wildlife note that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service set a population target of 320 wolves in a single area that spans parts of Arizona and New Mexico. They also say the rule prohibits wolves from moving into promising but yet unoccupied territory in the Grand Canyon and southern Rockies regions.

The groups say scientists have identified that establishing additional Mexican wolf populations as essential to eventual recovery.

They also argued that while the rule calls for the release of enough captive wolves to Boost the wild population’s genetic diversity, federal officials will consider the population’s genetic problems solved if the released wolves survive to a certain age, regardless of whether they ever breed.

“The government’s new management program threatens failure for the entire Mexican gray wolf recovery effort,” said Timothy Preso, managing attorney for Earthjustice, which is representing the environmental groups in the case.

Regional officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not respond to messages seeking comment on the latest lawsuit.

When the rule was released at the end of June, Amy Lueders, the agency's Southwest regional director, said the revisions would ensure that wildlife managers are on “the best path toward recovery” while continuing to provide tools for managing conflicts on the landscape. She was referring to the continued killing of livestock by wolves.

New Mexico ranchers fear that trading a population cap for a “management target” will only lead to more confrontations.

Meanwhile, other environmental groups have notified the agency that they also plan to sue over the rule.

The rarest subspecies of the gray wolf in North America, the Mexican wolf has seen its population increase over the last six years. A survey done earlier this year showed at least 196 Mexican gray wolves in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona.

As well as putting plans in place to deal with the difficulties, Renault has kept its focus on Europe, preparing the ground for a major offensive in EVs while also become ever stronger in hybrids.

This report, the first in a series, examines next generation models for the Renault brand.

The 5, a long-ago small hatchback, is to return, it was announced in January 2021. A week later the group’s chairman Jean-Dominique Senard said the car would be manufactured in France at the Georges Besse plant in Douai. Production of the Talisman at this factory ended in February (2022) and build of the Espace is also due to cease.

Unlike the original 5 and its Super-Cinq replacement, this one will be electric and have five rather than three doors. The ‘Renault 5 Prototype’ showed some guidance for how a production model might look. This model will also serve as the Zoe’s replacement.

The 5’s CMF B-EV architecture will also be used by Nissan, Alpine and Dacia with the first vehicle to arrive in 2024, Renault-Nissan stated in a January 2022 presentation about the Alliance’s future EV strategy.

Another retro-themed small EV which Renault hopes will become a big seller is due to arrive in 2025, five years before the brand becomes electric-only in Europe. To be a reinvention of the 4/Quatr’elle, the ‘4ever’ (rumoured model name) will be a small crossover sharing much with the 5. The life cycle may be as long as ten years.

Launched just over a year ago, the Kiger is also a small car but in this case it’s ICE-only and a special model for India. Renault developed the 3,991 mm long SUV mainly for the local market where it offers the choice of 72 kW and 96 Nm non-turbo 1.0-litre or 100 kW and 160 Nm 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines.

The life cycle will probably be seven years although as the basic vehicle is fairly aged, it might only be around for three-six years. The Nissan Magnite and Renault’s Kiger are part of the same project. Each is manufactured at the Alliance’s Oragadam plant in Tamil Nadu.

A successor for the Clio isn’t due until 2026 and there is a chance that this model will be launched in electric-only form. However, as with today’s model, there might also or instead be a hybrid powertrain at first.

Renault’s existing Clio E-Tech has a 1.6-litre engine and two small electric motors – one of which is a starter-generator – connected to the gearbox, while the electrics are 12 V not 48 V. This and other powertrains will likely be updated in 2023 to coincide with a mid-life facelift.

Also due for some styling changes in 2023, albeit later in the year, is the Captur, its life cycle being due to continue until 2027. Unlike the Clio, this small SUV can also be ordered as a PHEV.

The Captur E-Tech Plug-in features a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and two motors. The capacity of the battery pack is 9.8 kWh, the top speed in EV mode is 135 km/h and the maximum range (WLTP) is 50 km. The standard transmission is a CVT.

It’s too early to say how Renault will replace the Captur but it’s within the realms of possibility that its next generation could be EV-only.

The Mégane E-Tech Electric is the brand’s existing model.

Build commenced in early 2022 at Douai. The vehicle’s world premiere took place at the Munich IAA in September 2021. Customer deliveries in LHD European markets started during the second quarter but it will be September before cars reach the UK and other RHD regional countries.

The 4.2 m long crossover is a competitor for the larger VW ID.3, along with the Nissan Leaf, Citroen e4 and others in the C-EV class. The fourth generation Mégane five-door, which remains in production, is 4,359 mm long.

There are two motor options: 96 kW (130 hp) and 250 Nm or 160 kW (218 hp) and 300 Nm. As for the battery pack, Renault says it weighs 395 kg and is only 110 mm thick (1,960 mm long and 1,450 mm wide). The chemistry is lithium-ion NMC (Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt) and LG is the supplier.

Battery choices are 40 kWh for a range of 300 km or 60 kWh for a range up to 470 km (WLTP cycle, depending on each version). The 40 kWh one has eight modules of 24 cells each, distributed over a single layer whereas the 60 kWh pack consists of 12 modules of 24 cells each, spread over two layers.

The Kadjar name vanishes when the replacement arrives later in 2022. The 4.51 m long Austral (development code: HZH), revealed in March, is mainly for Europe and will be built at the Palencia plant in Spain.

The architecture is CMF-CD3, an evolution of the Alliance’s CMF-C/D. As for engines, there will be two non-hybrid choices when deliveries commence:

  • 1.3-litre 12 V four-cylinder TCe E-Tech (mild) Hybrid, front-wheel drive, 140 PS with manual transmission but 160 PS as an automatic, 136 g/km of CO2
  • 1.2-litre 48 V three-cylinder TCe E-Tech (mild) Hybrid, front-wheel drive, 130 PS, 123 g/km of CO2

As for the Austral E-Tech Hybrid, this features the Alliance’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and two motors. One of these can power the vehicle with the secondary one being a high voltage starter-alternator. The latter fires the engine and charges the battery. There are two versions, combined power being 160 PS or 200 PS.

The market launch is due to take place in the fourth quarter and the life cycle should be seven years, meaning a facelift in 2026.

Renault will launch a new Scénic in 2024 but rather than again being an ICE-powered monospace/MPV, this one will be an electric SUV. It will be around the same size as the Austral but should offer seven seats. A preview, in the form of the (hydrogen-fuelled) Scénic Vision, was revealed in May: see the image above.

RKM (formerly RSM)

Renault Group stated in March that it had begun the process of phasing out the Renault Samsung Motors name, replacing it with Renault Korea Motors (RKM). At that time, the French company held an 80.1 per cent share of the car maker with Samsung Card having the remaining 19.9 per cent. Samsung stated in 2021 that it would dispose of its entire holding. Then in May, Geely announced its intention to buy 34.02 per cent of RKM.

There are currently three Samsung models, South Korea being their main market. Two were launched in 2016 – the SM6 and QM6 – with the XM3 added in 2020. The third of the three is the same vehicle as the Renault Arkana while the SM6 is a rebadging of the former Renault Talisman. As for the QM6, this is a slightly altered Renault Koleos.

Models which use Geely Group’s CMA as their basis are due to be in production at RKM’s Busan factory from 2024. These will likely be both sold domestically and exported with Renault branding. Build of the QM6 and SM6 should end at the same time but the XM3 will probably continue until 2027.

The formalization of these programs adds pressure to the already difficult task of finding and retaining qualified teachers. Teachers are also facing added pressure to teach in ever-increasing class sizes while staying up to date with modern academic principles and new teaching methodologies.

In Latin America, one of ELL's target markets, the lack of English proficiency skills and pedagogical training has been a problem, according to a report by the Inter-American Dialogue. Researchers found that "many, if not most, English teachers in Latin America lack either the necessary English skills, the necessary pedagogical skills, or both, to be effective educators in the classroom."

“After 7,889 test kilometers (4,900 miles) during the first half of 2022, we’re on a very good path but there is still work to be done before the start of next season,” outlines Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Motorsport. “Our new Porsche 963 should continue the legacy of legendary models such as the 917, 935, 956, 962 and the 919. I’m positive that we’ll be well-positioned when it comes to technology and we’ve also created the relevant team structures to set us up for wins in the thrilling competition between many manufacturers and different concepts.”

The official race debut of the Porsche 963 is planned to take place in January 2023 at the 24 Hours of Daytona in the USA where it will race in the new overall class to be known as GTP class. In the meantime, the FIA WEC has opened the door for testing as part of the upcoming world championship races this year. Porsche Penske Motorsport has targeted a non-competitive dress rehearsal at the final round of the season in Bahrain this November.

“Over the past few months, our people at Porsche Motorsport and Team Penske have grown into an efficient and committed squad – the Porsche Penske Motorsport Team,” acclaims Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Motorsport LMDh. “We’ll have powerful driver crews in the four factory cars. The collaboration with our long-standing tire partner Michelin and the chassis manufacturer Multimatic works flawlessly. The Porsche 963 should be homologated this autumn. Until then, we want to make further progress with test drives and gain additional insights. We can hardly wait for our first outing.”

The drivers selected for the races in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship include the experienced “works” drivers Kévin Estre (France), Michael Christensen (Denmark), André Lotterer (Germany), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), Matt Campbell (Australia), Mathieu Jaminet (France) as well as accomplished sports car drivers Dane Cameron (Glen Ellen, California) and Felipe Nasr (Brazil). In the initial development phase, Frédéric Makowiecki played a key role during the rollout at the test track at Porsche Motorsport headquarters in Weissach, Germany in January. The Frenchman drove the first miles in the Porsche 963 and also turned the first laps in the simulator. Other experienced drivers from the Porsche squad will be added to the cockpit crews at the endurance races at Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona and Road Atlanta (Petit Le Mans).

Porsche Penske Motorsport prepares a total of four 963 for the world’s most important sports car races at its bases in Mooresville (North Carolina) and Mannheim (Germany). The WEC facility in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg is a former Porsche Centre of Penske Automotive, built to state-of-the-art standards. The exchange of data between the three high-tech centers of Porsche Penske Motorsport occurs almost in real-time. The WEC team will move into the Mannheim premises this autumn.

Jonathan Diuguid is the Managing Director of Porsche Penske Motorsport: “Expectations are extremely high,” acknowledges the American. “Not only from the public but also from Porsche and Team Penske, who have written great motorsport chapters together in the past.” Diuguid and Travis Law (Competition Director) will guide the global Porsche Penske Motorsport Team, with direct oversight and management of both the FIA WEC and IMSA programs. Daily operations of the FIA WEC team will be led by Bernhard Demmer (General Manager) and Francis Schammo (Team Manager. Joel Svensson (Team Manager) will be responsible for these roles in the IMSA GTP championship in North America.

In compliance with the LMDh regulations, the Porsche 963 is based on an LMP2- category chassis. This newly developed vehicle chassis is supplied by the Canadian high-tech company Multimatic. Bosch, Williams Advanced Engineering and Xtrac contribute the standard hybrid components. At the heart of the powertrain lies a 4.6- liter twin-turbo V8. The engine is based on the high-performance 918 Spyder hybrid sports car. Its DNA goes back to the RS Spyder racing car, with which Porsche and Team Penske notched up many victories between 2005 and 2008. The design of the new Porsche 963 hails from the victorious 956 and 962 classics from the 1980s. A continuous strip of lighting at the rear echoes the distinctive feature of the latest 992- generation 911. The white-red-black vehicle design is a salute to Porsche’s successful racing cars. Another tradition also lives on as the new Porsche 963 will be available to customers beginning in the car’s first year of competition. The first Porsche customer teams will begin to communicate their programs in the next few days.

For its envisaged campaign in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and WEC – the world’s two most prestigious endurance racing series with iconic events including the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Daytona 24 Hours and the 12 Hours of Sebring – Porsche Penske Motorsport joins forces with strong and proven partners. The tire manufacturer Michelin continues its close alliance, as does ExxonMobil with its Mobil1 brand. In addition to the software specialist Ansys, which supports the global team with cutting-edge simulation solutions as the official technology partner, the Penske Corporation, which will highlight a number of subsidiaries and brands, is also on board as an official partner. With its expertise in development and engineering, Multimatic joins the project as a technology partner. The luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer also joins the global team as the official timing partner of the Porsche Penske Motorsport program. The fashion brand Hugo Boss as the team’s clothing partner and outfitter as well as the sports lifestyle company Puma as the technical partner for fireproof race clothing complete the portfolio of top-level partnerships of Porsche Penske Motorsport.

Lingo Media Corporation (TSX-V:LM), an edtech language-learning and content development company, revealed that Cambridge English School, an established English language training institute in Mexico, has selected the English for Success (EFS) online English course as its turnkey blended learning solutions platform.

EFS is provided through Lingo Media's e-learning subsidiary, Everybody Loves Languages Inc. (ELL), an advanced language-learning content solutions provider.

With more than 700 hours of educational content, EFS uses storytelling to engage students to help them progress through various learning levels, said Lingo. Teachers can access and import supplementary lessons and materials, respectively, and deliver students extra practice to reinforce their learning, it added.

Cambridge English School chose EFS to enhance the company's online learning options and expects to double its enrollment by the end of 2022.

Thanks to the surging demand for English language education in Mexico, Cambridge English School recently expanded its program to include online learning, noted Lingo Media.
