Interbrand released its 16th annual Best Global Brands report today, identifying the top 100 brands that are globally the most valuable. For the third consecutive year, Apple and Google bagged the top two spots. Apple increased its brand value by 43% to USD 170.276 billion whereas Google increased its brand value by 12% to reach $120.314 billion.

Microsoft took the fourth spot, edging ahead of IBM which dropped to No. 5. Amazon ranked in the top ten for the first time, coming in at No. 10 with a brand value of $37.948 billion.

Rounding up the top ten were Coca-Cola at No. 3, Toyota at No. 6, Samsung at No.7, General Electric at No. 8 and McDonald’s at No. 10. Facebook was the top riser this year, increasing its value by 54% and ranking No. 23.

Commenting on the report, Jez Frampton, Interbrand’s global chief executive officer, said, “The Best Global Brands report examines what it takes for brands to succeed in today’s hyper-fragmented world. As people demand immediate, personalised and tailored experiences, business and brands need to move at the speed of life. Many of the brands in this year’s top 100 are so intuitively aligned with people’s priorities that they are able to seamlessly integrate into their everyday lives.”

There are a total of 15 automotive brands on the list, but the 13 technology brands truly dominate – making up 33.5% of the total table value. Tech brands take up four spots in the top ten itself.

This year saw five new entrants: Lego (No. 82), PayPal (No. 97), MINI (No. 98), Moët & Chandon (No. 99), and Lenovo (No. 100). Lenovo is the second Chinese brand to rank on the Best Global Brands list, following Huawei (No. 88) which first appeared in 2014.

The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, has said the size of the country’s population with full access to internet connectivity is just about 20 per cent.

Speaking on a national television thursday, Shittu explained that internet connectivity in the country at present is restricted to only areas that has mobile telephone network service.

“We need to have sufficiency in satellite communication, for now we are still deficient in it in the sense that accessibility to internet throughout the country is about 20 per cent and until we have sufficiency in the laying of cables to connect every part of this country, that deficiency will still be there.

He said at present, network subscribers cannot only get access to the internet only where there are mobile telephone network.
The minister, who also spoke yesterday during the inauguration of 18-member committee on the establishment of an ICT University in Nigeria, said the drive was in realisation of the critical role of Information Communication Technology (ICT) could play in the sustainable growth and development of the nation.

The former Executive Secretary National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, is heading the committee whose mandate it is to develop a robust curriculum of the proposed ICT University of Nigeria, among other recommendations.

While giving the rationale for the venture, Shittu said one of the obvious ways to re-strategise our ICT skills requisition and R&D to focus more on solutions to current and anticipated challenges in the sector.

“In response to the foregoing, the Ministry of Communications has identified the establishment of an ICT University as one of the ways to move to the next phase of the nation’s ICT growth by the enhancement of ICT learning environment that is geared towards the stimulation of creative thinking.

“To ensure that Nigeria keeps pace with the rapidly changing technological development in the global ICT industry, deliberate policy strategies must therefore be put in place within a nationally and globally defined agenda for sustainable ICT development,” he said..

The minister further explained that the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), which had served as ICT training facility with campuses in each of the six geo-political zones would be converted to serve as the ICT University with specialisation in various ICT fields and expertise.

He said the ministry has secured necessary endorsements from relevant stakeholders both within and outside of government including global leaders in the ICT industry such as Cisco, Facebook, Huawei, MTN, D-Links, Globacom, Lenovo, Samsung, Apple, Siemns, Nortel, Intel, Motorola, Ericsson, Dell, HP, ZTE and IBM.

These industry giants according to the minister have expressed their unequivocal support for this project with pledges in the provision of faculty, library content, syllabus, logistics, including funds towards the realization of the ICT University of Nigeria

Shittu also said the appointments would soon be made for the positions of acting vice chancellor and acting Registrar in preparation for the take off of the institution.

The Board of Secondary Education in Assam has developed a mobile application for the benefit of school students, Ranoj Pegu, Minister of Education, Welfare of Plain Tribe and Backward Classes, Assam stated.

The app will have online lessons, question banks and worksheets, among other features, all of which will help students get information beyond what is covered in school syllabus, official sources said.

Pegu further mentioned that the education department have been exploring digital education mechanisms in keeping with the growing use of technology in all spheres of life.

Speaking at the launch of two mobile phone applications by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), Pegu said technology and digital means are being adopted to ensure greater benefits for students.

He maintained that his department was working towards implementation of digital education and was developing necessary infrastructure for it.

Google has teamed up with Facebook to work around Apple's privacy tools in Safari to continue tracking end-users, an update to an antitrust lawsuit claims, with the search engine also doing what it could to slow down other regulatory initiatives surrounding privacy.

A lawsuit was filed against Google in December 2020 by a group of attorneys general, accusing the search engine of "engaging in market collusion to rig auctions," reports AppleInsider.

While the lawsuit largely focuses on a deal between Google and Facebook to cooperate in the online advertising business instead of competing, an update accuses the two tech giants of trying to work against initiatives by Apple to help protect the privacy of its users.

The amended complaint filed on October 22 and first reported by The Register, expands on the original claim in some directions, revealing more ways that Google may have tried to subvert user privacy.

As part of the complaint, it is alleged Google and Facebook "have been working together to Strengthen Facebook's ability to recognise users using browsers with blocked cookies on Apple devices, and on Apple's Safari browser, thereby circumventing one Big Tech company's efforts to compete by offering users better privacy.

This was apparently prompted by the two companies working closely and in integrating their SDKs "so Google can pass Facebook data for user ID cookie matching," the complaint reads.

"They also coordinated with each other to harm publishers through the adoption of Unified Pricing rules," it added.

Apple has implemented many privacy protection measures into its products, including Safari, such as 2018's Intelligent Tracking Protection 2.0.

The system required websites to request tracking privileges from users on an opt-in basis with a culling of cookies 30 days after the user stops visiting relevant sites along with independent tracking of widgets and embeds.

UAE students have come out with flying colours in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Grade 10 exams of 2022, despite the new mode of conducting examinations in 2 semesters.

Sahasra Buddharaju from JSS International School (JSSIS) and Ahan Mishra from GEMS Modern Academy (GMA) were the joint UAE toppers with 99.4%.

Sahasra Buddharaju from JSSIS, who scored 3 centums out of 5 subjects, said she wasn’t always the best student in class. “I started to feel a little competitive when I saw so many people doing better than me,” she said. “So I slowly built my game up to par over the last couple of years. From the beginning of this year, I knew I wanted to be the topper. So I doubled down and studied whenever I could. I did a lot of practice questions and revisions and took detailed notes in all my classes. I was studying at least 6 hours a day.”

The art hobbyist aims to be an interior design major. “Art was my way of unwinding, and I hope to take it up as a profession. I don’t have a dream college, but I hope to study in Australia or the UK. Five years from now, I hope I am studying in a good college and having fun with it.”

The 15-year-old’s brother has just graduated from the 12th standard of the same school. “I am hoping my results are better than his,” she chuckled.

Ahan Mishra from GMA, who celebrated his achievement with dinner with his parents, said he was ecstatic with his results. “I had in mind that I wanted to do well, so I worked really hard,” he said. “I am happy to see that it paid off.”

However, the 16-year-old strived for a very balanced lifestyle throughout the year. “I played basketball and was on the school team,” he said. “I was also taking piano lessons. I participated in cricket and badminton occasionally. I also played video games with my friends when I could. Art was a great way for me to destress. Whenever I would get worked up, I would open my book and sketch something.”

The youngster made it a point to study at least 2-3 hours a day. “I didn’t study for too long, but when I was studying, I was completely focused,” he said. “That came a long way. Science was the easiest subject for me. Languages were never my forte, so I struggled a bit with French. My ambition is to get into medicine. I have some dream universities in the UK. My next aim is to get into those.”

This year, the ICSE followed a new format of dividing the academic session into two semesters, with approximately 50 per cent of the syllabus being covered each semester.

“The Council’s two-semester exams with different formats in November and March set up a challenge for our students and teachers,” said Nargish Khambatta, Principal/CEO of GEMS Modern Academy, Vice President – Education at GEMS Education and Convenor of CISCE, UAE.

She added, "Barely had the students prepared and appeared for the first semester exams, when they had to quickly re-calibrate for the second set of exams. Once again, our students have inspired us with their transformative ability to adapt to change, stoic resilience and laser sharp focus for the Board exams.”

A total of 252 students appeared for the ICSE Grade 10 test from GEMS Modern Academy, with a batch average of 91.6%, surpassing that obtained in pre-pandemic years.

Ahan Mishra was followed by Siddhant Punamiya and Parna Sur, both of whom secured 99.2%. Standing third in the batch is Saayuj Ion Matthew and Sarah Manoj, who both secured 99%. Desiree Moraes, Akshay Akhileshwaran and Shreya Pulujkar all scored 98.8%.

A total of 85 students appeared for the ICSE Grade 10 test from JSS, with a batch average of 90.8%. Following Sahasra Buddharaju was Sunaina Reji Baker who scored 99% and Suhani Sharma who scored 98.8%.

Ambassador school, another ICSE school in the UAE posted impressive results with two school toppers- Parv Wadhwa and Chirag Sharma- scoring 98.6 percent. They were closely followed by Anushka Vastawat and Sailakshmi Narayanan scoring 98 and 97.2 percent respectively.

Killexams : CBSE 2022 results in UAE: Students celebrate high Class 12 results despite new test format

Dubai: Many Indian schools in the UAE reported a 100 per cent pass rate in the Class 12 CBSE results released on Friday, with some students scoring 99 per cent and higher.

CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) is India’s biggest school board and its Class 12 results weigh heavily on students university prospects.

On Friday, schools in the UAE following the CBSE curriculum announced high scores despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a new format for the Class 12 exam. This academic year, the test was split into Term 1 and Term 2 exams – the results on Friday were compiled from both terms.

The UAE-based schools also shared their toppers list. Atharva Tyagi of Asian International School, Al Ruwais, scored 99.4 per cent. Meanwhile Aryan Muraleedharan from The Millennium School Dubai scored 99 per cent, with schoolmate Liam Pimenta scoring 98.8 per cent.

Divyalakshmi Sudha

Divyalakshmi Varadha Rajan Prem Sudha, the topper at GEMS Our Own English High School – Dubai, who scored 99.2 per cent, said: “It all feels really surreal to me. I surely could not have asked for more. I’d like to dedicate this success of mine to my school, teachers, mentors and family. Without their moral support and guidance this would not have been possible."

She added: "This year we had a different pattern of exams. My secret strategy, I would say, would be studying the textbook line-by-line, solving papers from previous years, and familiarising myself with the art of solving different types of questions.”

Students’ plans

At the Delhi Private School (DPS) Dubai, Anveeshka Chouhan scored 97.8 percent. She told Gulf News: “I knew I had done well, but never imagined I would top my school.” She plans to enrol in medical school soon.

Meanwhile Mehul Agarwal and Sahil Khan from GEMS Our Own English High School [OOEHS] Sharjah, both achieved 97.2 per cent. Mehul told Gulf News: “Online classes due to the pandemic helped me be more productive each day, since I got more time to focus on my studies. Being a computer science aficionado, I am strongly determined to pursue my further education and career in Artificial Intelligence.”

Sahil said: “My secret to success was never to miss any classes, especially the extra classes where the biggest portion of the syllabus was covered.” Khan intends to take up a bachelor in Life Science course at McMaster University, Canada, and later pursue a medical degree.

Schools support

Punit MK Vasu, CEO of the Indian High Group of Schools, Dubai, said: “To ensure complete preparedness for the exams, students were split into smaller groups, and based on their internal performance, remedial and performance-boosting classes were launched. This was backed by practice papers, which were based on the new assessment pattern.”

Vandana Marwaha, principal and director of DPS Sharjah, said: “This year, the teachers, and students had to invest twice the effort as they prepared for the Board examinations in the new format, consisting of two major exams, especially the MCQ [Multiple Choice Questions] paper [the first by CBSE]. Such remarkable results reflect our students’ adaptability to any given situation.”

She added: “The school specially congratulates and celebrates the results of the students of determination who have done extraordinarily well. All these students have achieved over 85 per cent marks, of which two students scored over 90 per cent.”

Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO-Principal, Credence High School in Dubai, said: "We are absolutely delighted by the amazing result of our first batch of Grade 12 students. This batch of students displayed tremendous resilience, appearing for two-semester exams conducted in new formats and performing exceptionally well."
