Recently, Fortinet spoke with Austin Lawrence, Senior Tech Consultant, Modern Application Platforms at CDI (Computer Design Integration) for a virtual Q&A to discuss his view of the current state of cybersecurity, as well as his experience with earning his NSE 7 certificate, and how it has impacted his career.

A Conversation with a NSE Level 7

Q: What is the state of the cybersecurity industry?

A: I started in security in 2016 and notice a significant difference in the industry and the approach to cyber. One of the biggest changes is that the industry is a lot more tense now. There is a much bigger focus on cybersecurity for organizations. You really don’t go a day or two without seeing attacks or data breaches in the news. The folks that defend their networks—the defenders—are really looking for cybersecurity vendors and OEMS to provide holistic solutions that cover their users and their devices no matter where they are—whether they are in the cloud, in the data center, or on-premise.

With these increased data breaches and security incidents happening, I think companies like Fortinet have really stepped up their game in providing holistic solutions to ease the burden. The attack surface has widened since 2016, and that’s forced security vendors and OEMs to rethink the solutions they provide.

Q: What is your professional observation about the cyber skills gap?

A: The biggest change that I’ve seen in the technology since 2016 is that there is a wider area to protect. It’s multi-cloud. It’s on-premise. It’s wherever your endpoints are located and that makes it much more difficult for someone who is defending networks or in a cybersecurity role to keep up. So, I would say breadth of knowledge is something that’s missing as part of the skills gap.

It’s not anyone’s fault. Things are changing really fast and if you’re in a specific role or a specific area, it can be hard to keep up with all the other systems that you have to understand to defend.

Q: What value do you place on certifications?

A: Certifications play a big role in a security professional’s ability to keep up with the changing technology landscape. You need to understand modern threats and the systems that defend against them. NSE certifications is a great place to start to offset the cybersecurity skills gap. Certifications have played a big role in helping to cast a wider net of knowledge and area of study. If you want to learn something new or if you have a specific area of technology that you want to dig into, certification is a great place to start. You get to learn things that you wouldn’t necessarily learn on the job. I think it definitely helps offset that skill gap.Q: What Fortinet NSE certifications do you have, and when did you receive them? What was the process like?

A: I have NSE 1-3. I got them when I started working at a value-added reseller (VAR) in 2020.

In January of 2021, I went for the NSE 7 enterprise firewall certificate. That experience was good. I spent a couple of months training in a lab, spinning up virtual appliances and such—and just picking apart the firewall. I used the Fortinet Training Institute and had a positive experience there. The LMS was pretty well laid out. The lessons were well-structured. I pretty much got all the information I needed there along with on-the-job experience to pass the certification test.

Q: What does it mean to you to have a Fortinet NSE certification? Has it helped in your career?

A: I think it’s helped in two ways. From a day-to-day perspective, it’s helped me have a little more breadth in the technologies that I commonly work with. If I don’t know a Topic very deep, I might have touched on it in the certification training. I’ll know what it does and how to interact with it. From a security perspective, I’ll know how to secure it. Then I also think the certifications have helped me in career mobility—upward mobility. From that standpoint, it helped me get into a new role or helped me work on different types of projects. If I wanted to work on more Fortinet projects and go a level deeper, I could take the NSE 8 course. I think it definitely helps open up your options. From a career perspective as well.

Q: What motivate you to pursue NSE certifications?

A: It was primarily to get more familiar with Fortinet’s line of products. I had worked with other vendors’ security products in the cloud and on-premise for quite a long time before getting my NSE 7. And I was really impressed with Fortinet Security Fabric and how it is an ecosystem of products and services to solve a security problem. A lot of the clients I work with have Fortinet gear set up, so it naturally made sense to learn more about Fortinet through NSE 7, so I can learn more about the firewall in the cloud and on-premise, and help integrate those customer environments.

Q: What’s your background? What did you get your degree in? Where did you go to school?

A: I don’t have a degree. I went to a technical school when I was in high school. It covered a couple of things, including cybersecurity. Half of the day was high school classes and the other half was technical classes. We got to dig into networking and security topics, which was cool. That’s where I started.

Q: What advice would you deliver someone debating getting certified with Fortinet?

A: I would say if you see any of the subjects in the NSE that interest you, get logged into the Fortinet Training Institute and take some courses. Try to configure a lab and train with virtual appliances. Make sure to understand the presented subjects well and you’ll be likely to form some new skills throughout the process.

Fortinet has raised prices on products and services to address macroeconomic challenges including shipping delays, longer activation timelines and the suspension of sales in Russia.

The Silicon Valley-based platform security vendor says price hikes have more than offset supply chain and geopolitical headwinds in latest months, allowing Fortinet to increase both product gross margins and short-term deferred revenue from a year ago, according to CFO Keith Jensen. Service gross margins dropped since it will take longer for that side of the business to benefit from higher prices, Jensen says (see: Fortinet CEO Ken Xie: OT Business Will Be Bigger Than SD-WAN).

"Our goal is really to try over a longer period of time to just match the cost increases and maintain a consistent margin," Jensen tells investors Wednesday. "It's not that we're really trying to take down more margin."

Fortinet has found that higher prices don't tend to result in lost business since the company has historically offered 30% to 40% better performance at the same price as products from competitors, Jensen says. Fortinet tracks "very religiously" in its CRM tool why it loses competitive deals and hasn't seen any uptick in deals being lost on price since the company began charging customers more, he says.

"The question is always, 'How far can you push the envelope?'" Jensen says. "We know we come into the conversation with a significant price performance advantage."

The company has even raised prices around products that are no longer shipping since higher labor costs mean the expense associated with providing services and renewals on older products has increased, according to CEO Ken Xie. Although the price of the older product itself hasn't changed, Xie says customers now have to spend more to service and support that product.

Channel partners receive 60 days advanced notice before a price increase takes effect, and Jensen says the impact of price hikes is felt fairly quickly from both a product revenue and billings perspective. The trickle-down effect is much slower when it comes to service revenue, but Jensen expects growth to accelerate there as well in late 2022 and 2023 thanks to the price increases.

"You're going to see the benefit over a much longer period of time on the service revenue line," Jensen says. "You will see the benefit in billings much sooner. That's a very good leading indicator of where service revenue growth is going to go in the future."

Surviving the Supply Chain Squeeze

Price hikes are just one way Fortinet has attempted to address supply chain challenges alongside increasing inventory purchase commitments, redesigning products and qualifying additional suppliers, according to Jensen. But even with those actions, Jensen says demand continues to outpace supply, meaning that Fortinet's backlog is expected to increase throughout the rest of 2022.

"As we balance our pricing actions with the opportunity for continued market share gains, we have passed along most but not all cost increases," Jensen says.

Fortinet's backlog increased yet again in the quarter ended June 30 by $72 million to $350 million, but the rate of increase is down from $120 million in the first quarter of 2022, according to Xie. Networking equipment accounted for 50% of Fortinet's backlog due to continued challenges sourcing raw materials for switches and access points, while the company's FortiGate firewalls accounted for 40% of backlog.

"Our operation and R&D teams did an excellent job navigating the tough supply chain environment," Jensen says. "Nonetheless, we still expect supply chain constraints to be challenging throughout the remainder of the year."

Fortinet's gross margins have been affected not only by price increase but also the product mix from one quarter to the next, Jensen says. The company earns more profit on high-end firewalls as compared with entry-level firewalls, meaning that if Fortinet introduces a high-end firewall in a specific quarter or ends up with more high-end firewall shipments, the company's margins are likely to be higher, he says.

The impact of the economic downturn on Fortinet has thus far been brief and relatively insignificant, Jensen says. Fortinet saw a dip in field closure rates during the first half of June as well as the addition of an approver or negotiator on the customer side in larger deals to ensure the client was making the right decision, according to Jensen. But despite the pause, close rates actually increased slightly last quarter.

"For whatever reason, there was a slight pause there for a couple weeks in June," Jensen says. "But everybody came back and got the deal done that last week in June."

Fortinet's revenue of $1.03 million in the quarter ended June 30 was in line with Seeking Alpha's sales estimate. Meanwhile, the company's non-GAAP earnings of $0.24 per share edged out Seeking Alpha's non-GAAP estimate of $0.22 per share.

The company's stock is down $5.88 - 9.35% - to $57 per share in after-hours trading Wednesday. That's the lowest Fortinet's stock has traded since July 26.

The Americas accounted for 40.2% of Fortinet's revenue in the second quarter, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa, or EMEA, delivered 38% of revenue and Asia-Pacific, or APAC, was responsible for the remaining 21.8% of revenue.

For all of 2022, Fortinet expects non-GAAP net income of $1.01 to $1.06 per share on revenue of between $4.35 billion and $4.4 billion. Analysts had been expecting non-GAAP net income of $1 per share on sales of $4.38 billion.

JOHANNESBURG –October 24 , 2017 – The changing face of IT security is seen in such factors of modern life as the pervasiveness of the Internet, the sheer abundance of mobile devices, the rise of social media, and dramatic shifts in web and cloud-based technology. The Internet of Things (IoT) adds another layer of complexity in which applications are at the core of this changing landscape. According to F5 data that tracks the 25 largest security breaches between 2000 and 2015, an astounding 72 percent of today’s attacks target identities and applications, not the network.

This is according to Simon McCullough, major channel account manager at F5, who says, “This shift has come about because data is what hackers are after, and the most direct pathway to data is through user credentials and applications. In this complex and vulnerable environment, applications and corresponding data can be anywhere and everywhere.

“The traditional network perimeter has dissolved in this online, interconnected world, and so, in an attack on applications, traditional network firewalls are not enough of a defence. However, according to F5 research (specifically, marketing sizing estimates aggregated from global research firms), 90 percent of today’s IT security budget is spent on perimeter solutions, leaving minimal budget on protecting user identities and applications, where 72% of today’s attacks take place .”

McCullough says that in this new, borderless security landscape, it’s important to know your company’s threat profile. He clarifies, “In this regard, you need to understand the likelihood of exploitation at all of your network’s entry points - users, applications, data centres, and network infrastructure - and the resulting impact if these entry points get hacked. Your threat profile is a key element in determining that likelihood. Could your business be a target because of such factors, for example, as its geographic profile, industry, systems, software, or data?”

McCullough offers the following 10 useful focus areas to consider in order to help businesses strengthen their security programmes and risk mitigation strategies.

1. Understand the enemy
Although hackers today include less-skilled novices who are out to cause malicious chaos, as well as those who are driven by social and political agendas, the majority of today’s hackers are cybercriminals who are motivated by money. Although they have a reputation for sophisticated methodology, in fact, many of their methods are actually relatively unsophisticated, and they tend to take the path of least resistance, going after easy targets.

2. Sort out your cybersecurity budget properly, including cyber insurance
As outlined previously, applications and user identities form around 72 percent of today’s IT attacks, yet this is not generally reflected in IT budget allocations. Spend your security budget in the right way, and ensure that you have cyber insurance as part of your budget. Data breaches will cost you money, and insurance here is as necessary as household insurance for a homeowner facing the aftermath of theft.

3. Train all employees to understand that security is everyone’s responsibility
Awareness training makes everyone more alert. Train your users to recognise and curtail factors such as spear phishing attempts and social engineering. Help them understand the importance of proper password management. Train developers in secure coding so that your web applications don’t have coding vulnerabilities.

4. Properly control access

  • Remember that access is a privilege. Strictly manage what your user identities are authorised to access, so that when an identity is compromised, a threat actor doesn’t have unlimited access within the network.
  • Manage your volume of user identities. Enable single sign-on to reduce the number of passwords that are stored insecurely or repeated across multiple critical systems.
  • Implement multifactor authentication (MFA) for accessing your network and applications, because identities get compromised and MFA will help to protect data from being breached in the event of user credentials being compromised.
  • Tighten up on username and password combinations: Don’t use weak or default combinations, and implement account lockouts after six failed login attempts. Also, implement stronger encryption methods on password databases.

5. Manage your vulnerabilities

  • Have a scanning solution for every network, system, and software type; don’t limit yourself to externally facing IPs.
  • Scan inside your network, and do black box and static code analysis of your apps. Layer your tools, because no single tool can universally find everything.
  • Scan, test, and scan again. Have a continual testing process aligned to your development cycles and patch releases of your vendors.
  • Implement a consolidated reporting platform that tracks all vulnerabilities by system and can produce valuable improvement metrics over time.
  • Prioritise web application vulnerability management. You can get extremely good guidance from the OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project) Top 10, which describes today’s most critical web application security risks and how to mitigate specific types of attacks.
  • Automate web application vulnerability management. Allow Web Application Firewalls (WAF) to patch a vulnerability automatically. A WAF requires routine attention by an experienced engineer. Many organisations are opting for managed WAF services versus hiring in-house expertise.
  • Patch everything monthly, including desktops, laptops and servers, and especially if you are running Windows. Don’t skip important patches, as they will ultimately be required later in a queue chain of dependencies.
  • Keep it updated: Don’t allow end-of-life software or hardware in your network.
  • Force updates to Adobe Flash, Oracle’s Java, and don’t allow old versions of Internet browsers to run on company computer assets.

6. Ensure you have the required visibility
You can’t manage what you can’t see. It’s particularly important to make sure you have the visibility you need into your critical data. It’s important to properly architect, implement and continually manage intrusion detection/ prevention systems (IDS/ IPS), Security Information Event Managers (SIEM), data loss prevention (DLP) systems, and others. These systems need to have access to all parts of your network, systems, data, and data centres, and encrypted and non-encrypted traffic. Pay special attention to visibility within new virtualisation software.

7. Consider embracing the dark side… at least briefly
If you have an application that could cause significant harm to your business if it were compromised, it’s worth hiring an engineer to try to hack it. If hiring a hacker doesn’t sit comfortably, implement a public bounty programme.

8. Use the experts to help you
Compliance and incident response are two key areas for using the guidance of experts.

  • Security as a service is a great option for effectively managing high-risk controls that require immediate response by highly skilled engineers.
  • Test the effectiveness of your controls and control operators. Don’t let poorly designed controls or inadequate operators become the culprit.
  • Get help in the event of a breach. Get the professional experience you need after a breach so that they can make the important decisions that could have a material impact on the outcome of the incident.

9. Have a DDoS strategy
The DDoS attack landscape has shifted rapidly. No longer are complex, expensive attacks launched only at high-value targets. Today’s reality includes bots with plug-and-play attacks that criminals can rent at low cost, as well as IoT botnets that are easy to make and capable of launching terabyte-per-second attacks. Having a DDoS plan is critical.

10. Tell the ‘big shots’ about the likelihood and effect of a breach
Communicate the possibility and subsequent effect of a breach to your board of directors, senior management and others who need to be in the know. They need to be armed with this information rather than being hit with the reality of a breach that they never imagined. Properly done, this should also support your budget requests.

Brian Carlson was signing his scorecard following his final round in the Prince Edward Island Open in Canada when he was told he had won the tournament.

But Carlson needed to see it for himself.

“I asked someone to deliver me a cart ride back to the 18th green to make sure,” Carlson said. “It turned out to be right, but I still wanted to make sure everyone signed their card.”

It was official: Carlson, a Madison native, had won his first tournament on PGA Tour Canada. He’s been on the tour since 2019.

What made it even more special was his dad, Bill, caddied for him.

“That was special,” said Carlson, 26. “He been wanting to watch me play. He had not been to an event in awhile.”

Carlson birdied the 16th and 17th holes to take a 2-shot lead into the final hole, but then hit his tee shot on 18 into the water hazard. After his penalty stroke and subsequent third shot, Carlson pitched onto the green to 7 feet. It was then that he checked the leaderboard and realized he had a 2-shot lead.

Carlson proceeded to make the putt for par. He shot a final-round 65 and won by 1 shot.

“I was finally able to clear up those doubts I’ve had on the course. Now I know I can win if I get into these scenarios more frequently,” Carlson said. “It feels great to win. The level of competition is insane. You really have to play solid for four days to win.”

Carlson won $36,000 — in Canadian and before taxes, he noted — but still a big payday. He is able to pay off credit card debt built up from tournament fees and travel expenses. Like a lot of sports, it is difficult to make a living if not playing on the biggest of stages, in this case the PGA Tour.

“Golf is an expensive sport. I feel like availability and opportunity now allows for more competition to be had. Every kid coming out of college is insanely talented,” Carlson said.

Carlson was a standout in the Big 10 Conference at Purdue University, graduating in 2018. He played on the Dakotas Tour immediately out of college before making PGA Tour Canada.

But that particular tour was one of the most affected by the pandemic. Americans couldn’t compete in Canada each of the last two years. So in 2020, Carlson played in eight LocaliQ events in the U.S. to keep his game sharp.

Last year, the Forme Tour was created for players in the U.S. who could not cross the border.

Carlson has a degree in economics. But he really hasn’t given much thought to a fall-back plan if it doesn’t work out. He is all in on his golf career.

“(Being a professional golfer is) definitely not for the faint of heart. You have to be willing to go into the lowest of the lows, I know it sounds cliche, but you have to be put under pressure like that. It’s a good test to find out what you are made of,” Carlson said.

More important than the prize money is the 500 Fortinet Cup points Carlson received for the win. That put him into first place after three events. The tour is now on a three-week break before the final seven events of the season.

The top 10 finishers on the points list receive some status on the Korn Ferry Tour for next season. Golfers are guaranteed spots in some fields if they finish second through fifth while the points champ is fully exempt on the Korn Ferry for next season.

“The goal is to move up as quickly as I can to the next point of my career on the Korn Fery Tour if everything goes as planned,” Carlson said.

Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT), a global leader in broad, integrated, and automated cybersecurity solutions, today released its global 2022 State of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity Report. While industrial control environments continue to be a target for cyber criminals – with 93% of Operational Technology (OT) organizations experiencing an intrusion in the past 12 months – the report uncovered widespread gaps in industrial security and indicated opportunities for improvements. Key findings of the report include:

  • OT activities lack centralized visibility, increasing security risks. The Fortinet report found that only 13% of respondents have achieved centralized visibility of all OT activities. Additionally, only 52% of organizations are able to track all OT activities from the security operations center (SOC). At the same time, 97% of global organizations consider OT a moderate or significant factor in their overall security risk. The report findings indicate that the lack of centralized visibility contributes to organizations’ OT security risks and weakened security posture.
  • OT security intrusions significantly impact organizations’ productivity and their bottom line. The Fortinet report found that 93% of OT organizations experienced at least one intrusion in the past 12 months and 78% had more than three intrusions. As a result of these intrusions, nearly 50% of organizations suffered an operation outage that affected productivity with 90% of intrusions requiring hours or longer to restore service. Additionally, one-third of respondents saw revenue, data loss, compliance and brand-value impacted as a result of security intrusions.
  • Ownership of OT security is not consistent across organizations. According to the Fortinet report, OT security management falls within a range of primarily director or manager roles, ranging from the Director of Plant Operations to Manager of Manufacturing Operations. Only 15% of survey respondents say that the CISO holds the responsibility for OT security at their organization.
  • OT security is gradually improving, but security gaps still exist in many organizations. When asked about the maturity of their organization’s OT security posture, only 21% of organizations have reached level 4, which includes leveraging orchestration and management. Notably, a larger proportion of Latin America and APAC respondents have reached level 4 compared to other regions. More than 70% of organizations are in the middle levels toward having a mature OT security posture. At the same time, organizations face challenges with using multiple OT security tools, further creating gaps in their security posture. The report found that a vast majority of organizations use between two and eight different vendors for their industrial devices and have between 100 and 10,000 devices in operation, adding complexity.

OT Security is a Corporate-Level Concern
As OT systems increasingly become targets for cyber criminals, C-level leaders recognize the importance of securing these environments to mitigate risks to their organizations. Industrial systems have become a significant risk factor since these environments were traditionally air-gapped from IT and corporate networks, but now these two infrastructures are becoming universally integrated. With industrial systems now being connected to the internet and more accessible from anywhere, organizations’ attack surface is increasing significantly.

With the IT threat landscape becoming more sophisticated, connected OT systems have also become vulnerable to these growing threats. This combination of factors is moving industrial security upward in many organizations’ risk portfolio. OT security is a growing concern for executive leaders, increasing the need for organizations to move toward full protection of their industrial control system (ICS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

Best Practices to Overcome OT Security Challenges
Fortinet’s global 2022 State of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity Report indicated ways organizations can address OT systems’ vulnerabilities and strengthen their overall security posture. Organizations can address their OT security challenges by:

  • Establish Zero Trust Access to prevent breaches. With more industrial systems being connected to the network, Zero Trust Access solutions ensure that any user, device or applications without proper credentials and permissions are denied access to critical assets. To advance OT security efforts, Zero Trust Access solutions can further defend against both internal and external threats.
  • Implementing solutions that provide centralized visibility of OT activities. Centralized, end-to-end visibility of all OT activities is key to ensuring organizations strengthen their security posture. According to Fortinet’s report, top-tier organizations – which make up the 6% of respondents who reported no intrusions in the past year – were more than three times as likely to have achieved centralized visibility than their counterparts who suffered intrusions.
  • Consolidating security tools and vendors to integrate across environments. To remove complexity and help achieve centralized visibility of all devices, organizations should look to integrate their OT and IT technology across a smaller number of vendors. By implementing integrated security solutions, organizations can reduce their attack surface and Boost their security posture.
  • Deploying network access control (NAC) technology. Organizations that avoided intrusions in the past year were more likely to have role-based NAC in place, ensuring that only authorized individuals can access specific systems critical for securing digital assets.

Fortinet is committed to addressing this growing industry issue through training and certifications offered through the Fortinet Training Institute as part of the Training Advancement Agenda (TAA). During the onset of the pandemic in 2020, Fortinet made all its self-paced training courses available to anyone for free to increase access to its training curriculum for everyone, regardless of background or lived experience.

Free Cyber Training for Educators and Academia
Educational institutions are seeing an increase of bring your own devices (BYOD) by students, faculty and administrators, among other IT challenges, leaving them more vulnerable to threats due to the expanding attack surface. As a result, educational institutions must ensure they are securing their critical digital assets and sensitive information about their students.

To help further protect U.S. school districts from cyber threats, Fortinet is making its information security awareness and training service available to schools for free. Schools that take advantage of the free offering will be training their staff and faculty with skillsets and knowledge that could prevent them from falling victim to popular threat methods, such as social engineering attempts, reducing the likelihood of a breach. The service will be available to approximately more than 8 million faculty and staff across the U.S. starting this fall.
