The partnership represents Visa’s broader strategy to collaborate with and invest in rapidly growing FinTech companies that are reaching consumers and merchants not previously addressed by traditional financial services.

As a part of the agreement, Branch will also implement Visa payment services into its platform, to deliver consumers the ability to make payments using a card or a mobile phone. The move is part of Visa’s strategy to leverage mobile to digitize payments and is expected to pave the way for cash-free payments.

Commenting on the partnership, Visa’s Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, Fintech and Ventures, Otto Williams said, “Traditional barriers such as a credit score and bank account make financial accessibility a challenge for millions of people in Kenya and the region. By focusing on digitizing payments, we aim to build a more digitally inclusive ecosystem. We are confident that our collaboration with Branch will deliver on seamless access to finance for the unbanked.’’

Branch will also offer preferential loan terms to Visa merchants who accept Visa on mobile QR codes. Branch will extend this service to additional geographies in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically Tanzania and Nigeria. The loans will provide merchants with funds to grow their business through supplemental stock, infrastructure investment, and other key operational needs. Loans will be disbursed to Visa virtual credentials attached to merchants’ phones.

“With the partnership we seek to offer value beyond just transactions. We would like to help merchants grow their business and drive financial inclusion among the small merchant segments that are often unable to access quick loans.” Williams added.

Branch CEO, Mathew Flannery said: “At Branch, we think our innovative mobile financial app will be able to provide consumers and merchants access to financial services thereby creating a larger and more robust open loop payments ecosystem for all participants. Nov 21 (Reuters) - Dell Technologies Inc (DELL.N) posted a 68% rise in quarterly operating profit on Monday, as strong demand for servers and network equipment cushioned weak PC sales and easing supply-chain pressures helped rein in costs.

Revenue in the company's infrastructure solutions group, which includes servers, storage devices and networking hardware, rose 12% in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, the widely recorded cooling demand for personal computers and laptops from pandemic highs weighed on the company.

Consumer revenue tumbled 29% and large enterprises, or commercial, revenue, fell 13%. Total revenue slipped 6% to $24.72 billion but beat expectations of $24.54 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

The company benefited from an improving supply chain that eased pressure from higher component and freight costs, as well as measures to reduce expenses such as a freeze on external hiring.

Operating expenses fell 8% in the third quarter ended Oct. 28, the company said.

Net income tumbled 93% to $241 million, due to the $1 billion settlement of a lawsuit over a disputed 2018 stock swap. read more

Dell Technologies Inc. has announced a revamped lineup of PowerEdge servers that will be powered by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s 4th Gen EPYC Genoa central processing units.

The latest generation of AMD’s EPYC chips were unveiled today, and Dell wasted little time in showing how it intends to put that newer silicon to use in its flagship server portfolio.

According to Dell, the refreshed PowerEdge server lineup is designed to power compute-oriented workloads such as data analytics more efficiently. The servers employ its unique Smart Cooling technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, while their built-in cyber resilient architecture helps to reinforce security.

At the same time, the new servers are expected to pack a real punch, with AMD’s latest chips based on an advanced, five-nanometer process that delivers both greater density and power efficiency. The new Genoa EPYC server CPUs are also the first to support the new PCIe 5.0 connectivity, DDR5 memory and Compute Express Link 1.1 standards.

Dell’s revamped PowerEdge server lineup is available in one- and two-socket configurations and can support up to 50% more processor cores compared to last year’s models. The company also claims the highest performance ever seen for AMD-powered PowerEdge systems, with a 121% improvement over the previous generation, 33% more front drive for 2U servers, and 60% higher front drive count for 1U servers.

The lineup is led by the flagship Dell PowerEdge R7625, which delivers a big increase in application performance and data storage. Designed to serve as the backbone of the data center, it’s a two-socket, 2U platform that’s been shown to accelerate in-memory database performance by 72%, surpassing all similarly configured servers. Dell said it will be made available later this month in limited configurations, with full global availability planned for February 2023.

Customers can also choose from the PowerEdge R7615, a one-socket, 2U variant that boasts faster memory bandwidth, an improved hard drive and lower latency. According to Dell, it can complete multiple jobs simultaneously with a smaller footprint than comparable, earlier-generation servers.

The lineup is rounded out by the two-socket, 1U PowerEdge R6625 and the one-socket, 1U R6615 systems, which are said to provide a strong balance of performance, flexibility and density. All three of the latter models will become generally available in February, Dell said.

“Customers demand uncompromising compute performance delivered in the most sustainable manner possible,” said Rajesh Pohani, vice president of portfolio and product management for PowerEdge, HPC and Core Compute at Dell Technologies. “Our latest PowerEdge servers are purpose built-to meet the needs of today’s demanding workloads with efficiency and resiliency.”

In terms of sustainability, the new servers offer design enhancements with Smart Cooling tech that enables greater airflow through the systems, helping them to remain cooler for longer durations. That will lead to a reduction in heat generated and energy consumed by customer’s data center operations, Dell said. Overall, it promises up to 55% greater processor performance efficiency compared with the previous generation of PowerEdge servers.

In addition, the new PowerEdge systems are made from recycled plastic, and large numbers of them can be shipped simultaneously though Dell’s multipack option, reducing their overall environmental impact.

Finally, Dell stressed, the new systems are anchored by a “cyber resilient architecture” with features that include system lockdown, drift detection, multifactor authentication and support for confidential computing, where data is encrypted as it’s being processed. It all adds up to a more secure and resilient operation with “data center safety at its core.”

International Data Corp. analyst Kuba Stolarski, who said ongoing innovation in server performance is critical for enterprises, gave a big thumbs up to the new PowerEdge systems.

“With advanced security features designed directly into the platform, Dell’s new PowerEdge servers can help organizations keep pace with data proliferation in a growing threat environment,” Stolarski said. “The improvements in performance can enable customers to implement AI, HPC and other modern workloads to extract the most value from their data and IT investment.”

Dell has unveiled the next generation of its PowerEdge servers with 4th Generation AMD EPYC processors, designed for AI and high performance (HPC) computing workloads.

The company said the new hardware provides performance and storage advancements, suitable for businesses that perform advanced workloads including data analytics, AI, HPC, and virtualisation.

Dell underlined that customers can expect up to 121% performance improvement, up to 33% more front-drive count for two rack (2U) servers, and up to 60% higher front-drive count for one rack (1U) servers.

“Our latest PowerEdge servers are purpose-built to meet the needs of today’s demanding workloads with efficiency and resiliency,” said Rajesh Pohani, vice president of portfolio and product management for PowerEdge, HPC and Core Compute at Dell Technologies.

“With up to double the performance of the previous generation, combined with the latest in power and cooling innovations, these servers are designed to meet the growing demands of our customers.” 

There are four different servers available in the new PowerEdge series:

  • PowerEdge R7625 is designed for data centres through its dual 4th generation AMD EPYC processors. This is a 2-socket, which means two slots for CPUs, 2U platform that Dell claimed accelerates in-memory databases by over 72%.
  • PowerEdge R7615, a one-socket, 2U server with a faster memory bandwidth than previous generations. This is designed for smaller data centres and can speed up AI workloads.
  • PowerEdge R662, a two-socket, 1U server. Dell said this is suited for HPC workloads or running multiple virtual desktop infrastructure instances.
  • PowerEdge R6615, a one-socket, 1U server that offers more virtual machine density than previous generations. The server is smaller than the other but still offers increased compute power, and helps limit data centre footprint expansion.

The R7625 is currently available in limited configurations, while the rest of the servers are expected to become available in February 2023.

Dell has also boosted the security features that are built-into its servers. This includes system lockdown, drift detection, and multi factor authentication (MFA). Dell underlined this is extremely important for data centres, with its systems providing a more secure operation. AMD has also included an embedded security subsystem in the new processor to help protect data.

The servers also record details of the server hardware and firmware build at the time of manufacturing. Organisations can then verify that their server arrived as ordered and built from the factory.

The servers come with Dell’s cooling technology, Smart Cooling, to allow for more airflow through the systems than in previous generations. It said this will keep them cool while performing at the highest levels for long periods of time.

Additionally, the servers are designed to reduce heat generated, energy consumed, and the burden on other resources needed to power the systems. For example, the PowerEdge R7625 delivers up to 55% greater processor performance efficiency compared to its previous models, said the company.

Lastly, Dell said that the new servers will be part of its commitment to source recycled or renewable materials in over half of Dell product content by 2030. Also, when the company ships multiple servers at once, they will be delivered more sustainably by reducing the number of boxes and materials it takes to ship the systems.

Emails are one of the weakest links in a company’s defense against cyberattacks, and cyber thieves appear to be taking advantage of this vulnerability.

That’s according to a new study released today by Tessian, an email security platform.

“Organizations send and receive thousands of emails per day, making email a massive vulnerability for the enterprise and opening the door for advanced attacks like spear phishing, impersonation and ransomware,” Tessian said in a press release.

“These types of attacks also ranked as the top email threat that security leaders are most concerned about,” the company noted.

Tessian’s 2022 Email Security Report found that:

  • 92% of companies experienced a data breach caused by an end-user making a mistake on email—such as sending an email to the wrong person or failing to send the correct attachment.
  • Nearly 1 in 5 of these attacks were successful; 39% of respondents cited the breach of customer data, 34% reported financial losses, and 32% experienced a ransomware infection.
  • Smaller companies were most likely to receive email attacks from threat actors impersonating board members and investors. In contrast, larger companies received emails from threat actors who impersonated employees or company suppliers, reflecting how cybercriminals tailor their scams to make them more believable.

The survey was conducted in September 2022 for Tessian by third-party research house Censuswide, which queried 600 IT and security leaders in organizations across the U.S., UK, Middle East, and Africa.

The Latest Example

.American Airlines is the latest example of how businesses and organizations are vulnerable to e-mail-based cyberattacks.

In September, American Airlines reported a data breach it had discovered in July. “American Airlines said the successful phishing attack led to the unauthorized access of a limited number of team member mailboxes,” according to one news report.

The company notified told customers that “personal information such as an address, phone number, driver's license number, passport number and/or certain medical information may have been accessed by the hacker,” Reuters reported.

"We regret that this incident occurred and take the security of your personal information very seriously," American Airlines’ chief privacy and data protection officer Russell Hubbard said in a letter to consumers,” according to the news organization.

Seizing The Corporate Crown Jewels

According to the executive summary of the report, “threat actors are attempting to access corporate networks and are leveraging novel exploits to seize a business’ crown jewels, namely its data. Email remains a leading initial attack vector...that does not appear likely to change.”

“The issue of email as a go-to channel for threat actors is further complicated by the macroeconomic climate throughout the back half of 2022, with fears of a looming recession altering markets, and potentially headcounts moving into the next calendar year.

“Typically, malicious actors carry this out by baiting users with social engineering campaigns that can include impersonated pleas from trusted figures of authority or other fraudulent scams or promotions. Regardless, threat actors view the channel as one of the easiest inroads to compromising businesses,” the report noted.

A Costly Crisis

"Just one employee taking the email bait from a phishing attack can bring a successful organization to its knees. Corporate emails, targeted through phishing and weaponized malware, are the main entry point for most breaches,” Art Ocain, vice president of service delivery at cybersecurity company Airiam, said via email.

“Hackers are getting more innovative, and many employees unknowingly click a link or open an attachment and let the bad actors into the network,” he observed.

In addition to the crisis that a data breach can create for a company, the attacks can be costly. According to a report by IBM, the average cost of a data breach in the U.S. was more than $9 million, or more than double the global average.

‘The Solution Is Plain And Simple”

“When it comes to protecting against phishing attacks, it does seem like some employees always fall for them,” David Moody, a senior associate of Schellman, a global cybersecurity assessor, observed via mail.

“The solution is plain and simple: There is no substitute for training. A common method is to conduct simulated phishing exercises and use that information to identify and provide training for those who need it. There are companies who do this service for organizations and can also provide insight into larger company weaknesses, as well (such as email filtering and management policies).”

“Chief information security officers and business leaders need to focus on how they can defend and protect employees both within and, critically, beyond the walls of corporate systems,” Josh Yavor, chief information security officer at Tessian, said via email.

“On the corporate side, security teams should focus on preventing as many malicious emails from reaching inboxes as possible but anticipating that some will get through.

“”For those that do, they should ensure resilience by empowering employees with tools to help them avoid being tricked and by de-risking the impact of employees engaging with phishing emails by responding, opening files, or clicking links,” he advised.

Dell has announced the expansion of its PowerEdge server portfolio with three new products that aim to bring high-performance computing (HPC) to businesses of all sizes.

Built in collaboration with Intel and Nvidia, whose chips power Dell’s new servers, the leading launch is the PowerEdge XE9680 - the company’s first high-performance server to feature eight GPUs.

The PowerEdge XE9680 can be configured with either Nvidia H100 or Nvidia A100 Tensor Core GPUs to work in tandem with two upcoming 4th generation Intel Xeon processors to deliver faster performance in AI applications.

All three of the new server launches are also fitted with Dell’s new Smart Cooling technology that will assist in the smooth running of the equipment while performing tasks such as HPC modelling and simulation, and data visualisation.

“As the world’s largest privately-held cloud computing company, with 27 cloud data centre locations globally, it’s essential that we deploy technology to support the most demanding AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing workloads,” said J.J. Kardwell, CEO at Constant. 

“Dell PowerEdge XE9680 servers with the Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPU and A100 Tensor Core GPU will provide the capabilities needed to deliver maximum performance and value.”

The second launch, the Dell PowerEdge XE9640, aims to reduce an organisation’s energy costs by increasing the server’s rack density, combining it with a direct liquid cooling system - different from Smart Cooling’s air-cooled design.

The 2U server can be configured with four GPUs, combining Intel’s Xeon processors with silicon from its Data Center GPU Max series - Intel’s highest-density processors and the same chips that will be powering the Aurora supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory.

Lastly, the Dell PowerEdge XE8640 is for businesses that work with machine learning models for rapid data analysis. The 4U server is fitted with four Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs and two of the upcoming Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
