More precisely, you need at least 7,500 hours of business analysis experience over the last decade, and 900 of those hours must directly relate to four of the six BABOK Guide knowledge areas. Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP)

APICS is all about supply chain management. As part of its goal to develop qualified operators, supervisors and leaders, it offers the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) and a few other certifications. Basic Requirements

Students receiving federal financial aid are expected to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward completing their degree. Miami's SAP policy applies to the following federal financial aid programs:

  • Federal Direct Loan Program (Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and PLUS)
  • Federal Pell Grant
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
  • Federal TEACH Grant
  • Federal Work Study

To measure progress, the Office of Student Financial Assistance will evaluate a student’s academic record each year when the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is received. Records are reviewed in accordance with current academic standards of the University.

1. Credit Hours Attempted vs. Earned

Students must pass at least 67% of the cumulative institutional credit hours attempted at Miami to ensure the degree is earned within the maximum time frame allowed for the degree they are attempting.

2. Grades/Grade Point Average (GPA)

Undergraduate students must always maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA. Graduate students must always maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA.

Students must meet the academic requirements necessary to remain at Miami as a student as outlined in the Miami Bulletin, General Edition (MiamiOH.edu/bulletin).

3. Maximum Time Frame for Completion of Degree Program

Federal regulations require Miami to establish a maximum time frame for a student to complete a degree. For undergraduate students, we define this as 150% of the length of an academic program. For graduate students, we define this as five years from the acceptance into a Master’s program and 10 years from the acceptance into a Doctoral program. As a federal aid recipient, degrees must be completed within this time frame. The maximum time frame includes all prior terms of attendance at Miami, including part-time attendance and any other college or university, whether or not federal aid was received. The maximum time frame also includes all periods of attendance at Miami, whether or not a student received federal aid. Repeated coursework will count as additional attempted hours.

Please note: If an academic fresh start is received, all hours attempted prior to the fresh start are considered in the SAP calculation. Additionally, students pursuing a second degree are expected to maintain each standard of SAP, and progress will be monitored annually, per Miami’s academic progress review.

The policy is reviewed by comparing it to the Miami Bulletin, as well as any federal updates related to SAP. Annual Academic Progress Review

Progress is reviewed each academic year by dividing the cumulative number of credit hours earned at Miami and the total number of transfer credits, by the total number of credit hours attempted at Miami. Progress is also reviewed by ensuring that the student has not exceeded the maximum time frame for the degree the student is obtaining. If a minimum of 67% of the cumulative credit hours attempted are earned, progress is satisfactory. If less than 67% of the cumulative credit hours attempted are earned, progress is unsatisfactory. The GPA requirement and the maximum time frame will also be verified. The review process occurs at the end of spring semester for those students who have submitted a FAFSA. This review is based on the entire enrollment history at Miami and includes all transfer hours accepted. Transfer hours will also count toward the maximum time frame.

Appeal Process

Students may appeal the suspension or termination of federal aid if they have a reason(s) that prevented them from meeting SAP.

Common reasons for an appeal include:

  • Personal illness or injury that needed a lengthy recovery time.
  • Death or illness of a family member.
  • Trauma that impaired emotional and/or physical health.
  • COVID-19 related circumstances.

Common reasons for denial of an appeal include:

  • Poor academic performance due to being homesick.
  • Having a hard time adjusting to college, or the freedom of college life.
  • Being unhappy with classes or with an instructor.

To appeal, the Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Form and the following supporting documentation must be submitted:

  • Personal statement with the following information (in this order):
    • A detailed account of the valid reason(s) that prevented you from maintaining SAP.
    • The action(s) you will take to demonstrate improved performance (e.g. tutoring, academic advising, or other actions.
  • Documentation that supports the reasons for the appeal (i.e. statements from physicians/counselors including treatment dates and clearance to return to school, statement from clergy, birth/death certificates, obituaries, etc. These statements should not include detailed medical history or diagnosis).
  • If the appeal is due to exceeding the maximum time frame for degree completion, the SAP Maximum Time Frame Evaluation Form will also need to be submitted.

Appeals should be filed within three weeks of the date of notification that aid is suspended or terminated. Appeals must be submitted by the published deadline for the term in which the student is appealing to receive federal aid. Appeals are reviewed by a committee consisting of staff members from the Office of Student Financial Assistance. Students will be notified of the appeal outcome via email approximately three weeks after receiving the complete appeal. 


Additional Information Regarding SAP:

Change of Major

A student’s change of major can be considered as part of an SAP Appeal if the student is appealing as part of the Maximum Time Frame requirement. A change of major is not an automatic appeal approval.

Credit/No Credit Grade Option

Credit/No Credit courses do not affect a student’s grade point average (GPA) and are not factored into the GPA component of the SAP calculation, but the courses do count toward the pace of progression.

Incomplete Grades

Incomplete grades ('I', 'IG', ‘IU’, 'IGY', ‘IUY’, or 'S') count as attempted hours and will negatively impact academic progress. Notify the One Stop if a grade is changed. Eligibility for aid could be recalculated based on an increase in earned hours. This would include having a non-passing grade changed to a passing grade.

Non-Federal Financial Aid

SAP does not affect eligibility for private loans or Miami scholarships.

Re-Establishing Eligibility

Students may re-establish eligibility for federal student aid by taking classes to raise their cumulative GPA to 2.00 or higher and/or raising their completion rate to 67% or higher without the use of federal funds or through grade changes. Students should submit the SAP Appeal Form and a statement explaining that they have raised their GPA and/or completion rate to meet the SAP Standards and wish to have their federal aid reinstated. If a student is not able to re-establish eligibility by making up deficient hours, they may submit an SAP Appeal. Taking a semester off without enrollment or paying for coursework without aid for a semester will not be, in and of itself, sufficient for reinstatement of federal aid eligibility.

Remedial Courses

Students can receive federal financial aid for up to 30 credit hours of remedial coursework. Once 30 credit hours of remedial coursework is reached, federal aid will no longer be offered for additional remedial courses. Further, students can only retake remedial courses twice while receiving federal financial aid. Remedial courses and any repeated remedial courses will be included in the SAP calculation.

Repeated Coursework

Repeat course hours will be included as additional attempted hours. In addition, students can only take a specific course and receive a passing grade twice and still receive federal aid.

Withdrawal from a Course(s)

When a student officially drops a course during the first 20% of the course, no grade or other designation will appear on the official transcript. If a course is officially dropped after the first 20% of the course, the grade report and transcript will show a grade of W. Grades of W or F (and other negative grade marks) can affect aid for future semesters or years, because those hours will count as hours attempted but not earned. Withdrawal from Miami

When students receive aid from federal programs but officially withdraw during a semester, a percentage of aid may be used to pay the bill for the portion of the semester attended. Since the semester was not completed, 100% of federal aid may not have been earned. A federal calculation will be done to determine if any aid will be returned to the U.S. Department of Education. If aid is returned,the student will owe Miami for any unpaid charges. In addition, the student may jeopardize future federal financial aid. Federal Financial Aid Advisory

Students maintaining SAP but approaching financial aid suspension will receive written notification. The following guidelines are developed to notify students early of possible financial aid suspension:

Undergraduate Degree Program Guidelines for an “Advisory” notice:

  • Completion percentage is between 67% and 75%
  • The student has attempted 80 hours and has not completed an associate degree (if the student is seeking an associate degree)
  • The student has attempted 160 hours and has not completed a bachelor’s degree (if the student is seeking a bachelor’s degree)
  • The student has attended four years and has not completed a master’s degree
  • The student has attended nine years and has not completed a doctorate degree

Federal Financial Aid Probation

If the student’s progress is unsatisfactory but an SAP Appeal was approved, federal aid will be reinstated for one semester and reviewed each semester of attendance until progress is satisfactory. Students must complete at least 67% of the courses attempted and achieve the GPA required as part of the academic plan if the current cumulative GPA is less than 2.00. If SAP is not made during the probationary semester, federal aid eligibility will be suspended again.

Federal Financial Aid Suspension

A student’s pace, cumulative GPA, and whether the degree can be completed within the maximum time frame are reviewed annually by the Office of Student Financial Assistance with an automated process after official grades are posted. A notation is entered in the student’s electronic record to indicate that the student is meeting SAP standards.

If a student’s progress toward degree completion is unsatisfactory, federal aid eligibility will be suspended. The Office of Student Financial Assistance will send written notification of the suspension and information on appealing the suspension to the student. The notification includes an explanation of Miami’s policy on SAP Standards and the form for students to appeal their financial aid suspension. Submitting an appeal is not a guarantee of aid reinstatement. If an appeal is not submitted, denied, or it is determined that a student will not be able to complete their degree within the maximum time frame allotted, the student must complete coursework at their own expense until they are once again meeting the Standards of SAP. Denied appeals may be reviewed by the Director for reinstatement prior to meeting SAP Standards.  The student may complete coursework at Miami or at another institution, provided the credits can be transferred to Miami. Any credits earned and transferred to Miami must have been earned after the Miami term(s) in which federal aid was denied.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal

A student who is not meeting one or more of Miami’s SAP Standards as outlined may submit an SAP Appeal for reconsideration of eligibility for federal aid. Students that are not meeting SAP will receive instructions for completing an appeal as part of the notification of failure to maintain SAP standards. While there is no limit to the number of times a student may appeal, the review for subsequent appeals will be less lenient. Appeals should include a statement from the student explaining the circumstances that prevented them from being able to maintain the SAP Standards, as well as any corrective action taken by the student to Excellerate their progress. Documentation of the reason(s) for not meeting SAP should also be submitted as part of the appeal. Incomplete appeals will be denied and the student will receive a notification explaining that they may appeal again with complete information.

NAIROBI, Kenya-/African Media Agency(AMA)/- Graduates of the SAP Young Professionals Program are adding valuable digital skills capacity to African enterprises across the continent. 

According to Cathy Smith, MD SAP Africa, since the launch of the program in 2012, the support provided by graduates brings critical digital skills to African businesses to help drive greater digitalisation and innovation across industries. 

"African enterprises continue to grapple with widespread change and disruption brought by greater digitalisation and the impact of factors such as the pandemic. Having access to work-ready digital skills is essential to the success of every business on the continent. Initiatives such as SAP Skills for Africa and SAP Young Professionals Program continue to provide a welcome boost of digital skills to ensure African organisations meet their business and digital transformation objectives."

Addressing youth unemployment, underemployment

SAP Skills for Africa is SAP’s skills development and job creation initiative aimed at tackling the most pressing issues of our time, including youth unemployment and underemployment, as well as closing the digital skills gap. The initiative is part of SAP’s global commitment to promoting education and entrepreneurship, with the SAP Young Professionals Program - a two- to three-month program that sees participants graduating as SAP Associate Consultants - and the SAP Dual Study Program - held in partnership with universities - both offered under the SAP Skills for Africa initiative.

Youth unemployment remains a major challenge for countries across sub-Saharan Africa, with the regional youth unemployment rate sitting at 14.5%. Africa also faces a significant digital skills gap, with demand for digital skills training expected to surge in the coming years.

For many of the graduates of the SAP Young Professionals Program, however, the two- to three-month enablement program has provided a welcome springboard to fulfilling careers in the exciting field of ICT

YPP SAP Young Professionals Program graduates shine across Africa

Kenyan Daniel Oduri, who graduated as an Application Associate/SAP Associate Consultant for SAP Business One in 2017, gained hands-on experience at two different companies after graduating before joining Hashi Energy Limited. Here, he works as an in-house SAP Business One administrator, supporting the business across its operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“It was a great privilege to receive training from such a high profile and esteemed organisation. The skills I obtained have greatly impacted and shaped my career path. I am where I am today because of the program," says Oduri. "I believe my story will be a source of inspiration to many others."

Marvin Lomo, a graduate from Ghana who completed the SAP Young Professionals Program in 2020, says although he was not a developer at the time he joined the program, he was encouraged by his trainers to upskill in the technical domain of SAP. 

This advice paid off in a big way: Lomo currently has six SAP certifications and works as the lead Data Science Trainer at the German Institute of Business and Technology where he trains other learners in analytics and data science with the hope of improving their employability.

"I took this role primarily because of the impact the program had on me and, in my small way, I'd like to have a similar impact on other young graduates," says Lomo. "Currently I am one of the very few certified ABAP developers in Ghana, largely thanks to the support of the SAP Young Professionals Program."

Boosting representation of women in tech

Enabling more women in Africa to join the tech industry remains a top priority. According to industry figures, female participation in the sub-Saharan Africa economy has reached 61%, but women still only constitute 30% of the tech labour force.

Inspiring more women to join the exciting world of ICT was a top consideration for Grace Githinji. The young Kenyan graduate completed the SAP Young Professionals Program in 2021 and is hoping to encourage more women to enter the tech field in Africa. 

"The satisfaction of doing what I love and have a passion for while improving business processes through SAP's cloud solutions is something I would like others to experience too," says Githinji. "I also wish to offer the skills I've developed to add value to others and inspire others the way I've been inspired during the program."

For Rose de Lima Koffi, being part of the SAP Young Professionals Program was a route to full-time employment in her home country of Côte d'Ivoire. The MBA graduate completed the SAP Young Professionals Program in 2021 and is now a project manager at Cashew Coast. 

"I'm really grateful to have been part of the program. I developed new knowledge and really enjoyed the diversity of content in our sessions along with meeting likeminded people I now call friends. Most importantly, it was a route to finding a job I really enjoy in a company where I feel welcome."

Smith is encouraged by the way the SAP Skills for Africa program is enabling a new generation of tech experts to make an impact at African enterprises. “By providing a mix of functional technical knowledge and soft and future skills development, the SAP Young Professionals Program is inspiring more of Africa’s talented youth to enter the impactful world of tech. Through close collaboration with our private sector partners, the program is also enabling employment opportunities for young graduates while ensuring organisations have access to the skills they need to implement their digital and business transformation projects.”

Where applications, networking, infrastructure and security have always played off each other, it has been historically easy to treat each of those elements somewhat independently as well. But mobility has turned that view upside down and shifted it sideways. Network engineers need to support local, remote and mobile users, and provide proper infrastructure. Application and app development is more heavily slanted toward mobile environments, so security professionals must consider mobility from every angle.

The Citrix Certified Professional – Mobility (CCP-M) and the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate – Mobility (MCSA – Mobility) have been retired and are no longer available. To replace them, we added the Cisco Certified Network Professional – Wireless (CCNP – Wireless) along with GIAC’s Mobile Device Security Analyst (GMOB). The CCNP Wireless is geared more toward networking than toward mobility, but is popular with individuals and employers alike. Also, VMware’s AirWatch solution is now part of Workspace ONE yielding yet another change in the lineup.

Speaking of employers, we’ve listed the results of our informal search of several online job boards for our top five certifications. These numbers indicate how many postings across the U.S. included each certification in its qualifications or requirements on a specific day. This snapshot gives you a pretty good idea of the relative popularity of the certifications in the marketplace.

Mobile technology is changing so quickly that it appears that mobile certs are not viewed as keeping up with industry changes.

ACMP: Aruba Certified Mobility Professional

Aruba Networks, acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) in 2015, is perhaps best known for its network infrastructure solutions, but it’s also a major player in next-generation mobility networks.

The HPE certification program includes several Aruba mobility and network management credentials. The Aruba Certified Mobility Professional, or ACMP, identifies network engineers who install and maintain enterprise mobility and wireless LAN (WLAN) projects. It’s a step up from the Aruba Certified Mobility Associate (ACMA) and is a prerequisite for the more advanced Aruba Certified Mobility Expert (ACMX).

The primary difference between the associate- and professional-level credentials is a focus on skills in environments with a single “Mobility Controller” versus multiple controllers, respectively. The expert-level certification is concerned with implementation and troubleshooting in large-scale WLANs.

The ACMP test covers concepts, networking and topology design for Layer 2 and Layer 3 networks. An ACMP is expected to have deep knowledge of Aruba First Network Solutions, mobility and WLAN products, UCC Voice, firewall roles and policies, operations, planning and design, intrusion detection systems, troubleshooting techniques, and applications/solutions.

VCP-DW 2019: VMware Certified Professional – Digital Workspace 2019 (VCP-DW 2019)

Last year, we featured the VMware AirWatch Expert Accreditation: Enterprise Mobility in our list of the top five mobility certs. AirWatch, a VMware company, is an industry leader in enterprise mobility management. VMware rolled AirWatch into its Workspace ONE solution. Today, the AirWatch unified endpoint management (UEM) powers VMware’s Workspace ONE, providing end users with an integrated platform for digital workspaces. The featured cert for AirWatch/Workspace ONE is the VMware Certified Professional – Digital Workspace 2019 (VCP- DW 2019). CCNP Wireless: Cisco Certified Network Professional Wireless

A newcomer to the top five list, the Cisco Certified Network Professional Wireless (CCNP Wireless) is an advanced credential geared to IT professionals working with Cisco wireless enterprise networks. Ideal candidates are able to design, implement and secure Cisco wireless networks as well as troubleshoot issues as they arise. As senior team members, CCNP Wireless certification holders can assess business requirements, make recommendations and implement solutions.

Earning the CCNP Wireless is not easy. Candidates must first obtain either the Cisco Certified Network Administrator Wireless (CCNA Wireless) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) credential. In addition, candidates must pass four exams covering designing, deploying, troubleshooting and security Cisco wireless enterprise networks.

On February 24, 2020, Cisco will roll out new certification exams. The CCNP Wireless cert will migrate to the new CCNP Enterprise credential. Cisco encourages all candidates currently working on their CCNP Wireless cert to continue, indicating that any work completed in preparation for earning the CCNP Wireless will be credited toward earning the new CCNP Enterprise certification.

For more information, interested candidates should visit the CCNP Wireless Migration Tool to learn more about how their exams map to the new Cisco certification.  The last date to test on the existing CCNP Wireless exams is February 23, 2020.

The CCNP Wireless is valid for three years. To recertify, candidates must pass one of the following exams:  a 642-XXX or 300-XXX professional-level exam, the CCIE written exam, the CCDE written or practical exam, or the CCAr interview and board review.  Recertification requirements will change once Cisco releases its new exams, so credential holders should check with Cisco close to February 24, 2020, for the new recertification requirements.

GMOB: GIAC Mobile Device Security Analyst (GMOB)

Making its first appearance on the top five list is GIAC’s Mobile Device Security Analyst (GMOB). Part of GIAC’s Penetration Testing certification domain, the GMOB is geared toward penetration testers, network or system administrators, ethical hackers, technical auditors and security professionals who support tables and mobile devices.

The GMOB certification validates a candidate’s ability to assess and secure mobile devices, mobile applications, systems and networks. Successful candidates are also able to mitigate damage from malware, stolen devices, and penetration testing; unlock and root mobile devices; manage iOS and Android devices; and analyze and manage network activity.

A single test is required to earn the credential. While recommended, training is not required to earn any GIAC credential. Candidates have 120 days from the date the application is approved to attempt the exam.

To maintain the GMOB, certification holders must earn a minimum of 36 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) credits every four years and pay a renewal fee of $429.

VCP-DTM (2019): VMware Certified Professional – Desktop and Mobility 2019

VMware tackles mobility with virtual desktop infrastructures and a host of technologies that enable administrators to support mobile users using virtualization tools and platforms.

The VMware Certified Professional – Desktop and Mobility 2019 (VCP-DTM 2019) certification identifies individuals who can configure and manage environments running on Horizon 7.5 and install, design, and manage Horizon with View in vSphere implementations. Beyond the Top 5: More mobility certs

There are many more mobility certifications that can give job or promotion seekers an advantage in this IT niche.

Android professionals should check out the Android Certified Application Developer. If you’re interested in SAP, that company offers several SAP Mobile certifications on application mobility architectures that leverage the SAP Mobile Platform.

Professionals who work with Oracle Mobile Suite should consider either the Oracle Mobile Development Certified Implementation Specialist or the Oracle Cloud Platform Enterprise Mobile 2018 Associate Developer certification.

Some honorable mention goes to the Certified Casper certifications by Jamf and the Mobility certification from NetMotion. Also, keep your eye on the Credentialed Mobile Device Security Professional (CMDSP) from the Mobile Resource Group. Killexams : Four Red Flags To Look Out For With Direct Medical Programs

Direct Medical Programs (also known as BS/MD, BA/MD, BS/DO or BA/DO programs) can be a smooth journey to medical school for high school seniors. These competitive programs allow aspiring doctors to simultaneously apply to the undergraduate and its partnered medical school. As long as students meet the requirements to stay in the direct medical program, they will matriculate into the partnered medical school.

It might seem almost too good to be true, but for the most part, many of these programs are a successful pathway to medical school. However, some direct medical programs have unreasonably high standards that students must meet to stay in the program. Students need to consider carefully before committing to a BS/MD program to make sure that they can complete the requirements.

Here are four red flags students should look out for when choosing a direct medical program.

1. Doesn’t Offer A Guaranteed Spot

Some of the programs on BS/MD lists are masquerading as a direct medical program but don’t guarantee a spot in the medical school. Such programs are known as pathway programs. BS/MD counselor Kevin Trudel explains, “Pathway programs can be risky. I recommend students only commit to a pathway program if they are excited about the undergraduate school. If they are not accepted into the medical school, they might be stuck at an undergraduate school that wasn’t their top choice.”

Pathway programs often guarantee students just an interview at the medical school at the end of their undergraduate education, which the student must pass before being accepted. One example is the University of Toledo’s Baccalaureate 2 MD Pathway Program. For students accepted into the program, they must meet the following requirements as an undergraduate student:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities demonstrating a sincere interest in a medical career
  • Participate in special mentoring activities
  • Demonstrate a compassionate and caring attitude.
  • Pass an interview, which will occur in the fall of their third year in undergraduate

Of the 32 students who entered into the pathway program in 2017, only 17 met the requirements to qualify for an interview. Of those 17 students, ten (or 59% of the interviewees) were accepted to the University of Toledo's College of Medicine and Life Sciences in 2021.

Students should look carefully at what is required of them to get a med school seat. MCAT and GPA requirements are often standard, but read the fine print to ensure that you will be guaranteed a spot as long as you meet those requirements.

2. Strict MCAT Requirements

The MCAT, or the Medical College Admissions Test, is a dreaded part of the application process for countless med school students, with many spending 200 hours over the course of three months studying for the exam. For matriculants into medical school in 2021-22, the average MCAT was nearly 512.

“The reason why many students opt for a direct medical program is to avoid having to take the MCAT altogether,” Trudel explains. The programs at Brown University, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Adelphi University don’t require their students to sit for the test at all. Others, like the ones at St. Bonaventure and New Jersey Institute of Technology only require their students to take the exam, with no minimum score requirements.

However, not all programs offer their students that same luxury. In fact, their requirements might be even more strict than the average matriculant into a medical school. The University of South Florida’s program is one such program— students entering their program in 2022 must earn a 515 on the MCAT, with no individual test subscore lower than 126.

Hofstra University has a similarly strict MCAT requirement. Students must earn a 514 on the MCAT on their first attempt. If they don’t, they aren’t allowed to continue in the program.

3. Don’t Receive A Bachelor’s Degree

For BS/MD programs, you are required to spend time at an undergraduate institution before moving on to the partnered medical school. While you might assume that once you transition to the medical school curriculum, you will have already earned your Bachelor’s degree, that isn’t always the case. TCNJ’s 7 Year BS/MD Program doesn’t award the BS or BA degree until after the student has completed their first year of medical school.

Students attending the direct medical program at the University of Arizona never receive a bachelor’s degree. After the completion of the seven-year Accelerated Pathway to Medical Education program, students receive only an MD degree.

While this might not be a dealbreaker to students who stay in the program, it can deter students who want to keep their options open. If the student decides that they want to apply to other medical schools, they might not be able to until they receive their Bachelor’s Degree.

4. High GPA Requirements

Every BS/MD program has minimum GPA requirements. This should come as no surprise—they still want their students to be competent and ready to handle the intense med school and licensing process. Luckily, these requirements are often more lax than the traditional admission requirements.

For example, students in the Upstate Accelerated Scholars program at Syracuse University and State University of New York Upstate Medical University Alan and Marlene Norton College of Medicine must maintain a 3.50 cumulative GPA and a 3.50 science GPA to stay in the program. In 2021, matriculants who applied to the medical school the traditional way had a median GPA of 3.77.

Not all BS/MD programs are so lenient. Students in the direct medical program at the University of Central Florida must maintain a certain GPA average each year:

  • Year 1: 3.6 (cumulative and science)
  • Year 2: 3.7 (cumulative and science)
  • Year 3 and 4: 3.8 (cumulative and science)

While a higher GPA requirement isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker, it is something you should consider before adding a program to your BS/MD list.

Red Flags To Look Out For

BS/MD programs can be a ticket to medical school, but that isn’t always the case. If the student doesn’t meet the MCAT, GPA or other requirements, that means they are often placed on probation or kicked out of the program altogether. Therefore, students should do their research before making this multi-year commitment to a direct medical program.

You will then have a realistic picture of the achievements and possibilities that cloud computing will bring," he said. "Many SMEs continue to use many software and legacy systems that they developed themselves. But they should note that even though they can migrat their solutions and applications to the cloud, technology and standards are changing so fast that they might have difficulty catching up in the future."

Keep the Goal in Mind

A global leader in apparel manufacturing headquartered in Hong Kong, Crystal International Group Limited bolsters its transformation through an "One Team One Dream" culture, galvanizing its employees, technology partners and SAP teams, to work towards a shared goal. Karl Ting, the company's General Manager of Corporate Information Services, advised that companies embarking on cloud transformation to establish a clear picture of their "end state", with logical initial steps within a well-defined roadmap.

Establish the Business Case

"Although cloud operations can certainly Excellerate system availability and scalability, no cloud deployment can be successful if it is not supported by a business case and a return on investment assessment," he said. "Compliance is also another important factor from the risk management perspective. As Hong Kong and mainland China have different regulations on data management and data privacy, cloud transformation should take that into consideration."

For Chinachem Group, a leading property developer in Hong Kong and beyond, change management is the "secret ingredient" for transformation, according to Ben Fung, General Manager of Information Technology and Solutions. He reiterated the importance of close, two-way communication to align with the IT team and end-users.

"Every transformation project should involve showing end-users how digital solutions can help them do their jobs better," he said. La Posada Tax Clinic Director Robert Wunderle discusses the importance of low-income taxpayer clinics to the tax system and how his clinic serves the Twin Falls, Idaho, community.

This transcript has been edited for length and clarity.

David D. Stewart: Welcome to the podcast. I'm David Stewart, editor in chief of Tax Notes Today International. This week: clinical view.

Across the United States, there are just over 130 low-income taxpayer clinics. These clinics, also known as LITCs, help low-income taxpayers resolve tax disputes with the IRS at little to no cost.

But these clinics sometimes offer more than just tax resolution services to the community. They also act as taxpayer rights advocates, tax filing aids, and even financial literacy educators.

That is certainly the case for the La Posada Tax Clinic, the sole LITC in all of Idaho. This clinic in Twin Falls was founded in 2004 as part of the faith-based charity La Posada Ministries, which helps immigrants and temporary foreign workers adapt to life in the United States.

I spoke with the tax clinic's director, Robert Wunderle, about the tax clinic's founding, the role of LITCs in today's tax system, and his vision for the La Posada Tax Clinic tomorrow.

All right, let's go to that interview. Joining me now is Robert Wunderle, director of the La Posada Tax Clinic. Bob, welcome to the podcast.

Robert Wunderle: Thank you.

David D. Stewart: First off, could you tell listeners a bit about yourself and how you came to be the director of a tax clinic?

Robert Wunderle: Well, this is an interesting story because I did not start out as an accountant in life. I was actually in the Air Force and retired after 24 years, then went into accounting.

I had been working as a volunteer in the volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) program for many years when I had an opportunity to meet a Catholic nun who was helping immigrants and migrant workers in South Central Idaho. I asked her if she would like us to bring a team in to help some of her clients with their tax returns. She was thrilled by the idea.

That was back in 2004. As we went through that first year, I and three other volunteers came in every Friday to La Posada to help Sister Rosemary's clients. Come April 15, there was still a waiting list. Many of the people that were coming in had problems with the IRS. They were in examination, they had letters, their exemptions were being denied, and we continued to work on those things as we could. We kept coming back every Friday throughout the end of the year.

It was into December before we quit for that year. The next year we came back in January and started all over again, the same type of thing. In February, I got a phone call from the IRS Stakeholder Partnerships, Education & Communication office that oversaw the VITA program that we were operating under and said, "You have been working way outside the box, but there is a grant available and they're looking for someone in Idaho, in Boise, and we think you should apply." Well, I said, "Boise is not Twin Falls. What's the point if they want someone in Boise?" Well, they convinced me to apply. I applied for the LITC grant to do the kinds of things that we had been doing anyway outside the lines of the VITA program.

They started us off as an education grantee. In other words, we were funded just to help non-English-speaking clients to learn about their rights and responsibilities. We got a small grant, about $20,000, to do that.

We went from there and continued helping people with controversies. We got way behind in our reporting for the grants. In 2008, they didn't renew our grant. So we were out of the program, which was actually a relief for me in some extent because the reporting burden was extreme, we didn't have much funds anyway, and it seemed like the program office was never happy with us because we weren't doing things quite exactly the way they thought we should be.

Well, in 2008, the program again had what they call a "mid-year opportunity" for someone to come in and get a grant. After we were dropped out of the program, in the middle of the year I started getting phone calls from the local taxpayer advocate office from the former analyst who was working with us in the LITC program office. They were all encouraging me to apply again.

Again, I was reluctant because I never felt a great deal of comfort in operating the clinic the way they wanted us to. We were doing controversy and we had only been funded for educational outreach. But I was finally convinced, put in an application. The $20,000 grant became almost $60,000 for a half year.

Something was going on that I wasn't quite aware of, but I discovered later that (former Taxpayer Advocate) Nina Olson had taken notice of what we had been doing and had been impressed and made the decision to get us back into the program and give us better funding.

Now, up until that time, we were getting people into filing compliance, into collection compliance, into noncollectable status if they couldn't afford to pay, helping folks with individual taxpayer identification numbers (ITINs) and just resolving examinations, doing audit reconsiderations.

David D. Stewart: Why don't we turn from the specific of your clinic and talk a little bit more generally. I'm kind of curious about how you view the role of LITCs in general.

Robert Wunderle: The role of a LITC is basically to help to give professional and legal advice and assistance to low-income taxpayers who are in a controversy with the IRS and can't afford to hire a CPA or a tax attorney to represent them.

Let's talk about collections, for example. You've all heard the ads on TV, "If you owe the IRS $10,000 or more, we can settle that for pennies on a dollar." Yes, that's referring to what is called the Offer in Compromise program. In certain cases, it can be settled for pennies on the dollar, but only if you don't have the assets and income to pay what you owe and you can substantiate that.

The $10,000 threshold you hear in the advertisements is because the companies that are advertising this are charging around a $2,000 upfront retainer fee. I think I just saw today or yesterday a notice from the IRS they consider this a scam because most of the people that call in and pay are not eligible for the pennies on the dollar. A few might be.

David D. Stewart: Yeah. It seems anywhere where someone's talking about wiping out a debt and if you pay them they'll help you out, there's often some sort of scammy quality to that.

Robert Wunderle: Yes. The other thing that we do is, and I've talked about this, is advocacy. If we see something that is harming low-income taxpayers, especially disproportionately.

There's one right now that's going on that I just got off the phone with the IRS on. The IRS has what's called the Online Payment Agreement system. Now, that lets you set up an installment arrangement online. If you would set it up with direct debit and you're a low-income taxpayer, you should be able to do that without a fee being charged for setting up the agreement.

Well, agreements should be able to go out as much as 72 months, but the Online Payment Agreement software is not functioning correctly and it doesn't let you go more than 36 months. It wants far more money to settle a debt in that shorter period of time than our low-income clients can pay.

As soon as we pick up the phone and try to get that same agreement on the telephone, they're hit with a service fee that they wouldn't be hit if we could do it online. The IRS cannot fix that right now. They don't have the funds to do the IT work that would be necessary to reprogram it.

That type of advocacy is important.

Another thing we advocated for a long time and got nowhere with was having a flag put on tax numbers, these ITINs issued to children that were living outside the country so that those children couldn't be claimed for the child tax credit. The IRS didn't have the money to do that either.

They didn't quite say it to us that way. They told us that they didn't have the legal authority to do it, which I would dispute. They had the legal authority, they just didn't have the money to do the software changes.

Congress finally took it into their hands and said, "OK, no children with ITINs are any longer eligible for the child tax credit." It used to be that if they lived in the United States, they could get it. If they lived in Mexico, they couldn't.

That's the kind of things that LITCs do. Other LITCs have been very successful, for example, in getting other significant changes to IRS policy.

David D. Stewart: Now, does your clinic specialize in helping migrant workers, or is there other work that you do as well?

Robert Wunderle: We don't specialize in that exclusively, but we have become a resource throughout the country.

The IRS has done one webinar on tax law related to H-2A workers, but I have gone and spoken at various venues on the subject throughout the country, done a number of presentations for the National Council of Agricultural Employers.

We get calls sometimes daily, but at least one a week from either a tax attorney, a tax professional, an employer asking how they should be handling tax-related matters for their H-2A workers.

We are helping H-2A workers throughout the country because a lot of the agencies that we've reached out to now put our contact information in packages that they give to their employers. These are the agencies that actually help recruit the farm workers.

We have become nationally known as a go-to place to get good information on tax law regarding the H-2A worker community. But we do everything else that all other low-income taxpayer clinics do in addition to that.

David D. Stewart: In your time at the tax clinic, what would you say is the most complicated issue you've been presented with?

Robert Wunderle: Most complicated . . . There's one that comes to mind was a state issue.

I had a client come in who had not filed for a couple of years. Business had gone under, got involved in drugs, did some time in prison, came back out, and had huge debts with the IRS and the state that began when the IRS did what they call a "substitute for return."

In this particular case, we got the federal resolved and taken care of, but we were having a problem with the state. They had done their own substitute for return. It didn't matter how you did it on the state substitute for return, they just, in our opinion, had done it wrong.

We proposed them two or three different alternative ways to reconstruct the couple's income and pointed out that the auditor who had reconstructed it had taken 1099-MISC forms that had been issued by the different farms these people were working for and getting payments from and added those 1099-MISC reports of income to the income they had assessed based on prior year tax returns. This is somewhat complicated because when you do a Schedule C business return, you include in it all the 1099-MISC forms plus any cash that wasn't reported to the IRS as your income.

The state tax commission had taken a base year and extrapolated that into future years. The base year included the 1099-MISC in income from those years. But in the extrapolated years, they added the 1099-MISC to it.

It was a case that took us a year or so to resolve. It had to go to the state tax commission. They finally agreed that the levies that these people had been paying for a couple of years had more than paid what the true liability was and the case was dropped.

That was one that was more challenging than most. There have been a couple of others.

Right now, I'm having a senior moment.

David D. Stewart: Well, that's quite all right. That sounds pretty challenging, so that's a good answer to what I asked.

In your time at the clinic, is there a case that you look back on as something that you resolved that makes you proud? You're just really happy that this is something that you were able to get to a resolution on.

Robert Wunderle: We had one fellow come in fairly recently, and he has a disabled daughter who has epilepsy and she has a child. He had been filing with claiming his disabled daughter and his grandchild on his tax return. Because the child was disabled, he was claiming her for the earned income credit. In the tax provision, that's an allowable thing. But if you're audited, you have to be able to demonstrate that the child is disabled.

This is an immigrant from Peru. His English is limited. Several times he would go to his doctor and ask for correspondence and the doctor's office would write something. The first time they just gave us a note on a prescription pad. It never quite said what the IRS wanted it to say. So we continued to go back two or three times to the doctor, and it took us about a year and a half to finally get something from the medical provider in a format that the IRS would accept.

Just a few months ago, they finally released his refund from 1999.

David D. Stewart: Wow. That's a long time to resolve an issue. OK. That's impressive. All right.

Turning to a more general question again, what do you see as something that the IRS should be doing now to better support low-income taxpayers?

Robert Wunderle: I think they have to take a long, hard look at the filters they're using for their various programs. The integrity verification operation where people have to call in and identify themselves seems to me that a disproportionate number of low-income people are being hit in the filters that are freezing refunds or slowing things down. Again, it hits farm workers quite heavily.

When they call in, the IRS is expecting them to have records with a credit bureau that they can verify who they are, and yet people who come up every year as a guest worker and many undocumented people that are living here as residents but have ITINs don't have credit records. In Idaho, they can't even get a driver's license if they're undocumented.

These people are extremely challenged in proving who they are, and oftentimes they can't do it because of the systems that are set up. The IRS says go into a tax office. Well, there aren't that many tax offices around. Especially in rural areas where they can go in, they have to make an appointment.

For undocumented people, it's often in a federal building where they're at risk because they don't have identification to get in. For a guest worker, they have to rely on an employer to get the time off and the transportation to go somewhere.

It would be nice, I think, if the federal government would cooperate with some of the state tax offices and allow them to go into a state tax office and get that verification. After all, the federal government and the states have many agreements in which they exchange information all the time. That would be one way that they could make it easier for people to verify their identities when they get caught up in one of these filters.

David D. Stewart: OK. I have another question about your time running this clinic. You've been doing it for a while now. Have you noticed any trends of things getting better or worse for low-income taxpayers?

Robert Wunderle: Oh boy. I think the trend has been going on for years. It affects everyone, but it affects low-income taxpayers the most because if they have a refund frozen, or if they're having problems with the IRS and they can't get it resolved, they suffer a financial hardship that may be just an inconvenience for someone who has greater resources than they do.

For the past decade or more, the IRS's funding has been cut. Their number of employees they have to do the job has gone down. They've been tasked to do more and more and more. As I'm sure you're aware in the last couple of years with COVID-19, it has become horrendous. We're now sometimes waiting a year or more to get answers to correspondence.

When we try to work with someone and work with the IRS, it's exceedingly difficult to get information sent in, get it taken care of, and get a response back. Oftentimes, they end up in collections. You can get a collection hold for 30, 60, sometimes 90 days. But if it takes six months for the IRS to answer the letter you sent them explaining why they shouldn't be in collections in the first place, you have to keep going back or the notices keep coming.

David D. Stewart: Now, I mentioned in the intro, but it's worth repeating to be absolutely upfront about it. Tax Analysts is a sponsor of the Tax Analysts Public Service Fellowship.

Robert Wunderle: What I'm looking for is a succession plan. I started this clinic almost 18 years ago. I am now, I just celebrated my 80 birthday a while back.

David D. Stewart: Congratulations!

Robert Wunderle: So, I am looking for someone to come in here and keep this clinic alive for the period of the fellowship, and that will give us time, I hope, with me still on board, to raise additional sources of funding so that we can keep the fellow on board as the clinic director into the future and keep a LITC operating in Idaho. Right now, we're the only one.

David D. Stewart: Well, Bob, it has been great talking to you. Thank you very much. Thank you for all of the work that you're doing for your community.
