Unpatched vulnerabilities, common misconfigurations and hidden flaws in custom code continue to make enterprise SAP applications a target rich environment for attackers at a time when threats like ransomware and credential theft have emerged as major concerns for organizations.

A study that Onapsis conducted last year, in collaboration with SAP, found attackers are continuously targeting vulnerabilities in a wide range of SAP applications including ERP, supply chain management, product life cycle management and customer relationship management.  Active scanning for SAP ports has increased since 2020 among attackers looking to exploit known vulnerabilities, particularly a handful of highly critical CVEs.

The study showed that often attackers have proof-of-concept code for newly disclosed vulnerabilities in as little as 24 hours after initial disclosure. and fully working exploits for them in under three days. Onapsis observed attackers finding and attacking brand new cloud-hosted SAP systems in barely three hours.

Yet, many organizations are continuing to leave SAP applications unpatched or are failing to apply recommended updates for months—and sometimes even years—because of concerns over business disruption and application breakages. A Pathlock sponsored report earlier this year, that was based on a survey of 346 members of the SAPinsider user community, showed 47% of respondents ranking patching as their biggest challenge behind only threat detection.

"With known SAP vulnerabilities totaling 1,143, organizations continue to struggle with prioritizing which of these presents the greatest risk to their specific environment," says Piyush Pandey, CEO of Pathlock. "There must be a shift in mindset to factor in risk levels that allow for immediate mitigations of the most pressing threats," he says.

The security of custom code ranked as the next biggest concern after patching, with 40% identifying it as an issue. The Pathlock survey found many organizations have dozens or even hundreds of SAP systems in place making patching difficult and time consuming, especially because they are trying to avoid disruptions and app breakages.

3-Dimensions For Assessing SAP Security Risks

Threat Detection and Monitoring -- SAP systems need to be safeguarded to protect company information and processes by managing the access of internal and external entities. Although the servers, security logs, and system communications help secure data, it’s still vital to monitor and track every movement within the system. Out-of-the-box SAP tools do not allow for efficient monitoring and looking for anomalies on your own is a tedious process that requires a great deal of experience. Using these two solutions enables companies to monitor instance configurations across their entire SAP landscape to detect any deviations from the standard.

Users need to be aware that SAP vulnerability management cannot easily be achieved using the SAP Solution Manager for the following reasons:

●      Lack of User Friendliness - Securing SAP systems is an additional task for customers; it needs to be intuitive and as easy to implement as possible.

●       Tedious Setup and Maintenance - The required SAP functions are only available after an extensive implementation is completed, with additional maintenance efforts.

●       High Number of False Positives - The number of false positives (security violations that do not exist), is too high. Users do not trust the SAP Solution Manager results and ignore the time-consuming checks necessary to validate or disprove notifications.

SAP Patches -- A company’s SAP security team is one of the stalwarts of defense against internal and external security threats, particularly as many business practices continue to go digital. By controlling and monitoring access to SAP systems, companies can better protect confidential information and maintain the integrity of their business.

Cyber criminals’ techniques are increasingly sophisticated, and risk managers should anticipate new threats in advance. To keep these systems updated, security patches are being launched monthly by SAP, for businesses to integrate with their existing programs. Speed-to-security is essential for an up-to-date SAP security system. It’s important to note that cybercriminals quickly weaponize SAP bugs; businesses need to get SAP patches as soon as they become available to prevent breaches.

Hardening the SAP application stack in a timely fashion is necessary to ensure security, but difficult because determining the relevant SAP patches from dozens or more recommended monthly is another tedious process. To prolong the agony, a Windows-like upgrade process to implement SAP patches will not be forthcoming, even though it has been strongly suggested by the German-speaking SAP user group (DSAG). It is also important to note that implementing the necessary patches is not a panacea; real-time monitoring is still an essential defense.

Don’t Overlook the ABAP/4 Code -- Finally, in order to ensure cybersecurity, SAP users must not neglect their ABAP/4 program code. The application code base is massive, with many different components spinning different invoices to partners and manufacturers. If not maintained, it could have a snowball effect in terms of vulnerability. The customer-written ABAP/4 code must be constantly checked for vulnerabilities and appropriate bug fixes to achieve the desired level of efficiency.

Building An Effective SAP Security Strategy -- Obtaining visibility into SAP opens the door for risk managers to assess and monitor a wide range of potential vulnerabilities. It enables them to track risk violations to their company’s data while feeding managers constant information for their organizational strategies and compliance processes. However, building the security strategy for SAP is not a task for risk managers only. It requires knowledge about the SAP system architecture, business processes, data classification, interfaces, and even the SAP team structure. Risk managers need to work closely with SAP teams to share vital information on where, who, and what is happening. This process promotes active SAP roles, profile monitoring and assimilating information into a holistic risk assessment. Other pertinent SAP information that can be monitored includes:

SAP Innovation Challenges was launched in Armenia in October 2021 from a strategic collaboration with EU TUMO Convergence Center aimed at helping university students and latest graduates understand, utilize and shape digital technologies. With TUMO, SAP Innovation Center Network provided 22 innovation challenges to explore emerging technologies and concepts, each associated with one of four SAP Innovation Center Network projects: augmented extended planning and analysis (xP&A), augmented access control, future of self-service, and future of asynchronous work. During the four months, experts from SAP Innovation Center Network monitored the progress of all challenges and were in constant exchange with the participants to support if needed. 

After working on their projects, the students presented their outcomes at a demo day in April 2022 in front of SAP and TUMO experts as well as SAP customer ACBA Bank and partners.

The second round of the program, supported by SAP Startup Factory by BANA, ended in early October, 2022.

More than 100 students from various Armenian universities took part in the SAP Innovation Challenge at TUMO Labs and dozens of projects were made under the guidance of the SAP Innovation Center Network.

ASUE will be the first university in Armenia to join the SAP University Alliance as a full member and will be able to teach a range of academic disciplines using SAP products, as well as conduct academic research. The cooperation agreement at the SAP NOW business conference in Armenia was signed by Rector of ASUE Diana Galoyan and Managing Director of Multy-country cluster, SAP CEE Alexander Metechko. 

In this way ASUE will join a community of more than 3,100 of the world's leading universities in the education program. ASUE will have the opportunity to teach students, to Boost the qualifications of lecturers and to prepare research papers using the world's best practices accumulated by SAP. Students and lecturers will have access to courses and SAP learning systems.

ASUE also plans to participate in the SAP Innovations Challenges program run by the SAP Innovation Center Network. ASUE has planned to create innovation technology work zone/lab, where students will have the opportunity to get acquainted with and use SAP innovative solutions. In addition to that ASUE is planning to organize start up incubation events. The ASUE primary goal in this context is creating digital culture, boosting knowledge-based achievements and providing sustainable job opportunity for the young generation.
