Nvidia and Siemens are partnering to make it easier for manufacturing enterprises to build photorealistic digital twins of their products and production processes, and view and manipulate those twins in real-time.

“Everything we build in the real world is becoming so complex: We can’t imagine building these things without first simulating them inside the digital, virtual world,” said Rev Lebaredian, vice president of Omniverse and simulation technology at Nvidia.

Nvidia made its name designing chips that can dramatically accelerate certain kinds of calculations — those involved in rendering 3D models, for instance — but has recently moved into software development. It now offers application frameworks that enable enterprises to exploit masses of its processors to accelerate supercomputing tasks such as drug discovery, radio network planning, machining learning model training, or 3D simulation.

Siemens Digital Industries Software, a subsidiary of German industrial conglomerate Siemens, sells software that straddles the worlds of IT and OT (operational technology), including tools for low-code software development (Mendix) and IoT management (MindSphere) that may be familiar to CIOs, and a host of others for electronics design, manufacturing, product lifecycle management, and simulation.

Nvidia is joining the partner ecosystem of Siemens Xcelerator, the company’s portfolio of open, interoperable IoT-enabled hardware, software, and digital services.

Siemens Xcelerator has been slowly growing, but the addition of Nvidia to the ecosystem will accelerate that.

“We already have 50 certified partners,” said Siemens Chief Technology and Strategy Officer Peter Koerte. “Now, you may say, ‘Only 50?’ but we have an ecosystem of more than 4,000 today, and many of these we will be certifying also, if they qualify to participate in Siemens Xcelerator. We’re going to expand this over time, to build new partnerships.”

Another element of Xcelerator will be a software marketplace, where enterprises can find vendors and integrators that can put together a complete solution around Siemens software. This will begin with 400 offerings in four domains: real estate, utilities, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals, Koerte said.

The Xcelerator marketplace is not — or at least, not yet — an online store where buyers can drop the software and services they need in a shopping basket and obtain them. Koerte said Siemens doesn’t plan to monetize the marketplace directly, but sees its role more as helping broker deals. “If a customer comes to us and really wants to have multiple elements of a solution to be bought, … we facilitate that.”

One of the first signs of Nvidia’s involvement in the Xcelerator ecosystem will be the connection of Nvidia’s Omniverse platform for 3D design and collaboration with Siemens’ software platform to enable what Tony Hemmelgarn, CEO of Siemens DIS, called “the industrial metaverse.”

Software such as Siemens Process Simulate already produces renderings of what a production line looks like in operation so that manufacturing engineers can test out assembly sequences and check for collision clearance.

For enterprises using the two platforms, the result will be a dramatic improvement in the fidelity of digital twin renderings, from those produced by Siemens Process Simulate (above left) to those produced in real-time by Nvidia Omniverse (above right).

That can be more important in industry than people think, Nvidia’s Lebaredian said: “Often, people think about this as just nice to have: Making beautiful images is entertaining, or maybe superficial. But the reality is that when you’re building a real-world thing you really want to know how it’s going to look and feel and be perceived.”

In other cases, a photorealistic simulation may be the end goal, not the means: a sandbox in which to test something virtually. It’s much safer and more economical to test the software powering self-driving cars in a virtual environment, for example, than by letting it loose on real roads wrapped in two tons of speeding steel and silicon.

“If we’re going to build AIs that are truly intelligent and know how to operate inside the real world, we need to provide them with data about the real world, giving them experience of how the world looks. If we can’t simulate that accurately and match it correctly, our AIs are never going to have a chance of really understanding the world,” Lebaredian said.

Back in the real world — albeit one most of us will never see — Hemmelgarn suggested that the link with Nvidia Omniverse would be ideal for a company designing luxury yachts with Siemens’ software. “I could be working on the design of the ship and have a scene showing the ship at sea. I could see all the furniture and everything sitting on the ship. If I want to make changes to the fit, the style, anything about this, I can do it in real-time. And I can make these changes with much more confidence with the customer because they can then see exactly what they get. The value is how closely the virtual representation can represent the real product,” he said.

In other situations, though, that full-HD rendering will be something of a luxury, and not strictly necessary to perform the kind of collision clearance checks necessary to, for example, ensure that a new yacht can reach the sea without having to dismantle a bridge.

The Cortex-A715 focuses on efficient performance, delivering a 20% energy efficiency gain and 5% performance uplift compared to Cortex-A710. In addition, the Cortex-A510 and DSU-110 were updated to reduce power and Excellerate scalability up to 12 cores. On the GPU front, it debuted Immortalis-G715, the first Arm GPU to offer hardware-based ray tracing support on mobile, as well as Mali-G715 and Mali-G615 GPUs, which include variable rate shading to Excellerate energy savings and gaming performance in premium devices.

Cadence announced RTL-to-GDS digital flow Rapid Adoption Kits (RAKs) for Arm Cortex-A715 and Cortex-X3 CPUs and the Arm Mali-G715 and Immortalis-G715 GPUs on 5nm and 7nm nodes to help achieve optimized PPA goals and improved productivity. Synopsys QuickStart Implementation Kits (QIKs) are available that include implementation scripts and reference guides.

Cadence expanded its family of radar, lidar, and communications DSPs with two new DSP IP cores for embedded processing in the automotive, consumer, and industrial markets. The 128-bit ConnX 110 DSP and 256-bit ConnX 120 DSP feature an N-way programming model and are fully compatible with the ConnX B10 and B20 DSPs, and use an optimized instruction set for radar, lidar, and communications applications.

Flex Logix and CEVA announced a Flex Logix EFLX embedded FPGA (eFPGA) connected to a CEVA-X2 DSP instruction extension interface to enable flexible and changeable instruction sets to meet changing processing workloads. The ASIC was designed and taped out in a TSMC 16 nm technology by Bar-Ilan University SoC Lab, as part of the HiPer Consortium, backed by the Israeli Innovation Authority.

Truechip added USB 4 HUB & Retimer models to its lineup of verification IP.

Professional services firm Accenture will acquire XtremeEDA, a provider of silicon design and verification services. “By combining XtremeEDA’s strong and deep experience in advance silicon design with Accenture’s Cloud First capabilities, we are poised to deliver more value for clients in specialized hardware, distributed cloud, decentralized edge computing and complex security needs,” said Jeffrey Russell, president of Accenture in Canada. XtremeEDA was founded in 2002 and is based in Ottawa, Canada. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.


Cadence unveiled Xcelium Apps, a portfolio of domain-specific technologies implemented natively on the Xcelium Logic Simulator kernel to Excellerate verification performance for automotive, mobile and hyperscale designs. The portfolio includes a Machine Learning App to reduce regression times by learning from previous regression runs and guiding the Xcelium randomization kernel; a Digital Mixed-Signal App for co-simulation with Spectre SPICE analog simulation and SystemVerilog real number model-based simulation; a Multi-Core App to reduce runtime for long-running high-activity tests; a Safety App for serial and concurrent fault simulation; PowerPlayback App for glitch-accurate power estimation of multi-billion gate SoC designs; and X-Pessimism Removal App to shorten debug time by making the propagation of “X” values in simulation more accurate.

Keysight Technologies updated its integrated design and simulation software to address increasing design complexity and higher frequencies in the radio frequency (RF) and microwave industry. PathWave Advanced Design System (ADS) 2023 includes enhancements to electromagnetic (EM) simulation for circuit designers, such as automation of EM-circuit co-simulation setup and a single unified environment for EM solvers and meshing technologies. It also streamlines integration of multi-technology circuit assembly and simulation into enterprise EDA design workflows. “PathWave ADS 2023 directly addresses the needs of customers developing multi-technology high speed, high-frequency designs,” said Joe Civello, director of RF and Microwave Simulation at Keysight. “This new solution offers workflow and simulation performance improvements that accelerate the design and simulation process while delivering the analysis results necessary to ensure designs meet critical electrical and thermal performance requirements.”

New startup MachineWare launched, offering a high-speed functional RISC-V simulator that enables software developers to test full software stacks, including firmware, operating system kernel, and complex user-space applications, in real time. Versions of its SIM-V tool are tailored to different use cases, from HPC RISC-V systems to 32-bit edge computing. The company is a spin off from RWTH Aachen’s Institute for Communication Technologies and Embedded Systems.

Primarius revealed a flexible design environment for custom memory and analog/mixed-signal IC design that integrates with the company’s circuit simulators and includes schematic entry, layout editing, and in-design physical verification. It also introduced an automated Pcell library development tool, a solution for standard cell library characterization and qualification, and a low-frequency dynamic noise measurement system.

Intel Foundry Services (IFS) introduced the IFS Cloud Alliance, which aims to enable secure design environments in the cloud. IFS will collaborate with partners to ensure that EDA tools are optimized to take advantage of the scalability of the cloud while meeting the requirements of Intel’s process design kits (PDKs). Initial members of the program include Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, as well as EDA companies including Ansys, which made its tools, including RedHawk-SC, HFSS, Totem, PathFinder, VeloceRF, and RaptorX available as part of the interoperable, cloud-enabled semiconductor design flow, and Cadence, which made its design tools available to IFS users in a cloud-based environment. IFS said Siemens EDA and Synopsys are also taking part.

S2C debuted new FPGA prototyping software. The Prodigy Player Pro-7 suite breaks out Player Pro-RunTime, to strengthen prototype platform control and hardware test for its high-capacity platforms; Player Pro-CompileTime, to enhance the automation of multi-FPGA partitioning and pre/post-partition timing analysis; and Player Pro-DebugTime, to Excellerate the efficiency of multi-FPGA debug probing and trace viewing with S2C’s MDM Pro debug tools.

Ansys’ Redhawk-SC and Totem power integrity platforms were certified for TSMC’s N3E and N4P process technologies, enabling sign off of voltage-drop, power noise, and electromigration reliability down to 3nm. In addition, Ansys’ multiphysics platform supports the TSMC N6RF Design Reference Flow for designing radio frequency (RF) chips with TSMC N6 process technology. The reference flow includes fast in-design analysis of electromagnetic coupling and the layout synthesis of coils, transmission lines, and other inductive circuit devices. It also supports circuit-under-inductor techniques that can significantly reduce the area and cost of an RF design.

Scania adopted Keysight’s Scienlab Battery Test Solutions for its new battery laboratory at its research and development facilities. Scania also leveraged Keysight’s PathWave Lab Operations for Battery Test, an integrated, web-based lab management platform that optimizes workflow, test throughput and data management. The new 1,000-square-meter laboratory includes three 250-square-meter test halls for battery cells, modules, and packs. The main focus is on battery performance and lifespan evaluation in various climatic conditions from -40°C to 70°C.

Photonics, HPC

Intel Labs announced new research on advancements in multiwavelength integrated optics, including the demonstration of an eight-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) laser array that is fully integrated on a silicon wafer and delivers output power uniformity of +/- 0.25 decibel (dB) and wavelength spacing uniformity of ±6.5%. “This new research demonstrates that it’s possible to achieve well-matched output power with uniform and densely spaced wavelengths. Most importantly, this can be done using existing manufacturing and process controls in Intel’s fabs, thereby ensuring a clear path to volume production of the next-generation co-packaged optics and optical compute interconnect at scale,” said Haisheng Rong, senior principal engineer at Intel Labs.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) activated two new supercomputers for weather and climate modeling. The two Hewlett Packard Enterprise Cray supercomputers, called Dogwood and Cactus, utilize AMD EPYC 7742 processors and each run at 12.1 petaflops, a 3x improvement over the agency’s previous system. They are currently ranked as the 49th and 50th fastest computers in the world by TOP500. NOAA said the new systems will enable higher-resolution models that can better capture small-scale features like thunderstorms and use more realistic physics. The new supercomputers will enable an upgrade to the U.S. Global Forecast System this fall and the launch of a new hurricane forecast model called the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System, slated to be in operation for the 2023 hurricane season pending tests and evaluation.

Memory & storage

eMemory subsidiary PUFsecurity and UMC announced a physical unclonable function (PUF) embedded flash solution. PUFflash integrates eMemory’s NeoPUF into UMC’s 55nm embedded flash technology to enhance the security of embedded flash applications with a PUF-based Root of Trust while maintaining the access speed of the embedded flash.

Weebit Nano taped out ReRAM demonstration chips with SkyWater’s 130nm CMOS process. The embedded ReRAM module includes a 256Kb ReRAM array, control logic, decoders, IOs and error correcting code (ECC). The demo chip comprises a full sub-system for embedded applications, including the ReRAM module, a RISC-V MCU, system interfaces, memories, and peripherals.

Micron Technology started shipping its 176-layer NAND SATA SSD designed for data center workloads. The company said the SSD has improved reliability and endurance.


Siemens Digital Industries Software is expanding its Xcelerator platform. In addition to the portfolio of products already under the Xcelerator banner, the platform will include a marketplace of IoT-enabled hardware, software, and digital services from an ecosystem of partners. Nvidia is taking part, and the companies will connect Xcelerator with Nvidia’s Omniverse platforms to create AI-enabled, photorealistic, physics-based digital twins. The first pilot will be a solution for BMW’s showcase electric vehicle manufacturing site in Debrecen, Hungary.

Cyberon Corporation’s continuous command-based voice user interface (VUI) toolchain is now available for Renesas Electronics’ entire RA MCU line, enabling the addition of voice-recognition to a variety of endpoint applications in home appliances, building automation, industrial automation, and wearables markets. Renesas is making a Voice Reference Hardware Platform available to enable rapid prototyping and development of voice interfaces. The new hardware platform enables local voice recognition without a network connection using Cyberon’s DSpotter solution.

Infineon uncorked a battery-powered Smart Alarm System, which it says provides high accuracy and very low-power operation using AI-based sensor fusion that combines a MEMS microphone and digital pressure sensor.

Canon selected AMD’s Versal AI Core series for its Free Viewpoint Video System for live sport broadcasts. The video system consists of a ring of high-resolution cameras that surround a stadium or arena to allow broadcast viewers to see the action on the field from any position or angle in the stadium.


Hailo and Renesas teamed up to incorporate Hailo-8 neural network acceleration processors with Renesas’ R-Car V3H & R-Car V4H SoCs for scalable, efficient ADAS solutions for zonal and centralized vehicular ECUs. The solutions are scalable for a wide range of ADAS functions from ADAS L2+ up to L4 AD functions requiring very high TOPS and good TOPS/W.

Renesas will collaborate with Tata Group’s Tata Motors and Tejas Networks to develop automotive electronics for electric and connected vehicles. Renesas and Tejas will work together on design and development of semiconductor solutions for radio units (RU) used in telecom networks, from 4G, 5G, to open radio access network (O-RAN). The companies aim to roll out products and solutions initially for India and aim to expand its footprint in the global markets.

Killexams : Siemens and Nvidia collaborate to expand digital services

ZURICH (Reuters) - Siemens has signed a partnership agreement with chip designer Nvidia Corp to create an industrial metaverse - an enhanced virtual reality for companies to reduce the costs of running their factories, buildings and speed up new product design.

The deal is a cornerstone of Siemens Xcelerator, a new open digital platform also launched by the German technology and engineering company on Wednesday.

The cloud-based platform, which will feature hardware, software and digital services, is part of Siemens' ambition to grow its digital business by 10% per year from the 5.6 billion euros ($5.89 billion) generated in 2021.

"Siemens Xcelerator will make it easier than ever before for companies to navigate digital transformation – faster and at scale," Siemens Chief Executive Roland Busch said in a statement.

Siemens, which bought Brightly Software for $1.58 billion on Monday, is moving further into the digital space because it offers faster growth rates and higher margins than its traditional business of trains and industrial drives and automation.

Siemens and Nvidia are just two of the companies which are working in the so-called metaverse, which refers broadly to the idea of a shared virtual platform that people can access through different devices and where they can move through digital environments.

Facebook-owner Meta Platforms and Microsoft and others are also looking at metaverse technology can be used in business and leisure.

Siemens's Xcelerator will be the umbrella term for services which will allow customers to visualise yachts or factories, for example, before construction starts.

"We can essentially replace having to build a thing in the real world first," Tony Hemmelgarn, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries Software, told reporters.

The platform would also ensure products "are going to work well, before we commit to building them in the real world when it becomes really expensive and difficult to change," he added.

The services will be offered to customers through Siemens's software as a service (SaaS) subscription model, to make it more affordable for small and medium sized companies.

As part of the collaboration, Siemens will connect Xcelerator and its own software and digital twin products with Nvidia's Omniverse, a platform for 3D design.

The U.S. government agencies put out a warning that Russian military has been using a Kubernetes cluster to attempt distributed and anonymized brute force access against hundreds of government and private sector targets worldwide. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the National Cyber Security Center jointly issued the warning. The agencies said the attacks started at least in mid-2019 through early 2021 and have been called Fancy Bear, APT28, and Strontium. Specifically named in the warning is Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) 85th Main Special Service Center (GTsSS), military unit 26165. The GTsSS most often used Microsoft Office 365 cloud service to gain access although other service providers and on-prem email servers were attacked. One way to protect against the attacks is to use two-factor authentication.

The U.S. federal government has been beefing up its cybersecurity defense. DHS announced it has hired and onboarded 300 cybersecurity professionals and has tentative job offers out to 500 other people. The department is in a 60-day hiring action it calls the Cybersecurity Workforce Sprint. In all, 2000 vacancies need to be filled. The DHS’ CISA also will be keeping a published list of bad security practices. Finally a historically large budget for CISA $2.42 billion just passed unopposed out of its House subcommittee.

Microsoft announced its new operating system Windows 11, which has a more stringent security baseline required from the hardware it runs on. The OS is designed to only run on systems that have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 security chip. The TPM 2.0 generates, stores, and manages the use of cryptographic keys and supports a strong cryptographic algorithm called Secure Hash Algorithm 2 256 (SHA-2 256).

Adelphi University launched the Anita D’Amico Endowment Fund for Cybersecurity and Psychology Research. The endowment will fund research that looks how psychology intersects with cybersecurity. “I am honored that Adelphi University has launched this endowment fund for cybersecurity and psychology research in my name and I thank all those who are contributing to it. Human attitudes and behaviors are a major contributor to the safety and security of cyber systems,” said Anita D’Amico, vice president of Market Development at Synopsys. “Psychological principles can be used to better understand the interplay between cyber attackers and defenders and can shed light on how to motivate everyday computer users to adopt more secure practices and avoid risky behaviors. Human factors research can provide insight into the organizational characteristics that influence the introduction of vulnerabilities into software and systems. This endowment will fund interdisciplinary psychology and cybersecurity research to promote a more safe and secure cyber world.” D’Amico was recently the CEO of Code Dx, which was acquired by Synopsys.

The gate-all-around FET (GAA FET) promises to remedy the channel width variations and mobility loss seen in advanced node finFETs. Synopsys reports that its R&D collaboration with Samsung on the reference flow and GAA-focused power-optimization techniques is showing, according to a press release, “improved electrostatic properties that translate to increased performance and reduced power with the added benefit of new optimization opportunities based on the additional vector of nano-sheet-width control.”

AT&T will run its 5G mobile network on Microsoft’s cloud, which means all of AT&T’s mobile network traffic will be managed with Microsoft Azure. Microsoft will acquire AT&T’s Network Cloud platform technology, which includes its 5G core software used by mobile and IoT devices to connect to the Internet, and will invite the AT&T engineers to join Microsoft. Microsoft is developing its Azure for Operators product   AT&T will continue to operate its network for its customers but will use Microsoft’s hybrid and hyperscale infrastructure.

Marvell announced that its OCTEON 10 DPU (data processing unit) family will include Arm Neoverse N2 cores.

TotalEnergies Gas Mobility will be using Siemens‘ IoT MindSphere for monitoring of its Natural Gas for Vehicle (NGV) refueling stations across the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. MindSphere is an industrial IoT service available on the cloud and is part of the Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio of software and services.

Xilinx latest version of its Vivado Design Tools are now using machine-learning (ML) optimization algorithms to speed up FPGA programming. The Vivado ML Editions has ML-based logic optimization, delay estimation, and intelligent design runs to automate timing closure iterations. Xilinx is also introducing the concept of an Abstract Shell, where modules can be defined to compile incrementally and in parallel.

RISC-V processor designer SiFive has qualified the Imperas simulation models for the full range of the SiFive processor Core IP Portfolio.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) signed a three-year Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Verizon’s drone company, Skyward, to test cellular-connected drones. The two entities will separately collect and analyze data focused on how well cellular communications networks can handle the safety-critical command and control (C2) of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The data will help inform both groups as they suggest standards and regulations that will enable businesses to fly safely beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) and help shape a universal traffic management (UTM) system, which will be a traffic control for drones. In the U.S., drone operators are not allowed to fly drones BVLOS, although Skyward has experience flying BVLOS — with the FAA waiver — to inspect communications equipment during a 2020 wildfire. Verizon’s spectrum will be part of the test.

Automotive, transportation
Car companies must now report any accidents involving self-driving cars or autonomous systems in cars to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Manufacturers and operators of vehicles equipped with SAE Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) or SAE Levels 3-5 automated driving systems (ADS) must report crashes to the agency within one day of learning of the crash. NHTSA has a form online to ease data submittal.  “NHTSA’s core mission is safety. By mandating crash reporting, the agency will have access to critical data that will help quickly identify safety issues that could emerge in these automated systems,” said Dr. Steven Cliff, NHTSA’s acting administrator in a press release. “In fact, gathering data will help instill public confidence that the federal government is closely overseeing the safety of automated vehicles.”

Faulty software is the reason Porsche must recall 43,000 of its Taycan EVs (electric vehicles). The software, which causes the engine to suddenly shut down, cannot be fixed by an over-the-air update.

HERE Technologies, Porsche, and Vodafone are testing an early warning hazard system that uses 5G system to inform drivers in real time of hazards on the road ahead. HERE’s Live Sense SDK sensor and a camera system on the car that will send data to the edge — a multi-access edge Computing (MEC) system to decide via AI algorithm if there is a hazard. A message will be sent to the driver via a MQTT message broker on 5G mobile network technology. The tests are being conducted at Vodafone’s 5G Mobility Lab in Aldenhoven,

In a sort of dry run for the IAC (Indy Autonomous Challenge), 17 university teams competed in the Ansys Indy Autonomous Challenge Simulation Race, in which they ran simulated digital twins of their vehicles on a digital replica of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The winner PoliMOVE received $100,000 and runner-up TUM Autonomous Motorsport received $50,000.  The real live race will happen on October 23, 2021 at the speedway.

Chinese automotive SoC designer AutoChips is again adopting Arteris IP’s FlexNoC interconnect for its automotive SoCs. The FlexNoC is a network-on-chip (NoC) interconnect that manages the on-chip communication. AutoChips first used FlexNoC in 2018.
