Software developers are some of the most highly sought-after IT professionals, and many companies consistently struggle to find the coders they need. 

That can be especially true of smaller businesses, particularly if they lack the money to tempt developers who might otherwise end up going to big technology companies. But what's also true is that not every developer wants to work for a giant, faceless corporation. And in any case, every software developer has to begin designing code somewhere, whether at a mid-size tech company or their old college roommate's startup, which means that smaller businesses are often a route into the industry for many developers just starting out.

And depending on a company's size, a developer will face different challeges and use different skill sets.

Brendan O'Leary, developer evangelist at GitLab, says that smaller companies can offer greater feelings of connectedness between a developer and their work's impact on their company. O'Leary says smaller companies allow developers to focus more on their cycle time, which is the time it takes from writing the first line of code to seeing it go into production.

That can be a huge advantage that a small company can offer, he says: "That's an intrinsic motivator that's really hard to replace with money or anything else."

O'Leary says developers at larger companies are more likely to feel disconnected from their work's direct impact on their company and its customers.

Amanda Richardson, CEO of CoderPad, agrees that developers at smaller companies have a unique chance to witness the fruits of their labor by working on a project in its entirety.

"Working at a smaller company can provide the opportunity to work from start to finish on projects while seeing the immediate impact of your work," she says. 

According to Richardson, small businesses might be the route new or inexperienced developers choose, as startups are typically operating within the bounds of small budgets. Developers at smaller companies will need excellent problem-solving and research skills. On the other hand, she says more prominent companies are in the market for IT professionals who might not have a broad scope of experience in all facets of software development but have a deep understanding of one specific topic.

"Because budgetary constraints often mean startups can't match the pay of large companies, they are more open to considering profiles that don't tick all the boxes in terms of degrees or professional experience," she says.

Bigger businesses do offer specific advantages for certain types of individuals. At a larger company, software developers and engineers can expect more structure, clearly designated roles and responsibilities, and established processes. A larger company is probably further along in its DevOps growth and hires developers who are ready to face a project head-on. That can be a good environment for someone just starting out.

"Working as a developer at a large company implies a structured environment with well-established processes and roles," Richardson says. "It can be especially valuable for young graduates to learn within a structured environment and see software development at scale while acquiring best practices."

The downside, of course, is that developers in a bigger business might find themselves completing mundane tasks. According to a Stack Overflow survey, 45% agreed that feeling unproductive is the number one reason they're unhappy at work, with inflexible working practices not far behind as something to complain about.

This issue is particularly true at larger companies if developers work on a small part of a larger project, with each team of developers holding one piece of the puzzle, and little sense of what the completed work looks like.

In contrast, smaller companies can offer software developers a more comprehensive range of knowledge, as each developer will need to take on more pieces of the puzzle and manage more parts of a project. At these companies, developers will be closer to understanding a problem and will work closely with the required steps to find a solution. 

Both Richardson and O'Leary agree that smaller companies have a slight advantage over larger companies with how fast they can develop new software. 

Richardson thinks this advantage is because larger companies must make more complex decisions. At the same time, O'Leary says it's because developers can focus more intensively on their cycle time at smaller companies.

Larger companies overcome some of the challenges of building software by using smaller groups to make the process more manageable. Smaller teams can communicate and collaborate faster, releasing software at lightning speed. As a company grows, it will need to split its engineers and developers into much smaller teams, and each team will oversee a small portion of a project.

Even some of the largest tech companies still want their developers to keep to small teams, to emulate the agility of small businesses.

"The smaller the team, the better the collaboration," says Amazon – hardly a small company – in its so-called "two-pizza team rule", which states that DevOps teams should be small enough for two pizzas to feed everyone on the team.

"Collaboration is also very important as the software releases are moving faster than ever. And a team's ability to deliver the software can be a differentiating factor for your organization against your competition. Imagine a situation in which a new product feature needs to be released or a bug needs to be fixed – you want this to happen as quickly as possible so you can have a smaller go-to-market time," it says.

Flexibility is another factor. Richardson says developers working at small companies and startups have more autonomy and responsibilities than they would at larger business. This autonomy creates room for developers to pitch new ideas to the company. According to the Stack Overflow survey, 39% of respondents said that a lack of growth opportunities makes them unhappy with their jobs. A developer's possibilities to expand and grow in their career might be much higher at smaller companies.

But the same autonomy can mean a lack of guidance and more room for error.

"The drawback of working for a smaller company is you're unlikely to have the reassuring support of a seasoned engineer to answer questions and help you ramp up or be able to test your ideas at scale," she says.

O'Leary says it all depends on the developer and what kind of career goals they have. Some people might enjoy the challenges of trialing new code and solving problems that small businesses face. Others might prefer the stability of a larger, more established company.

Working at a small, mid-size, or large company has positive and negative aspects. It all depends on what an individual developer or engineer strives for in their career, and how many responsibilities they'd like to take on in their professional lives.

But it's almost universal for developers to want to understand the impact of their work and feel like the work they complete is meaningful and valuable to society. So in a tough market, hiring managers at companies big and small should look at the work they are offering and consider how the developers they recruit can be made to feel like they are really making a difference.

Today, “thinking” has become a necessary skill in the job market. But it has been split into creative thinking, critical thinking, design thinking, analytical thinking, logical thinking, strategic thinking, and holistic thinking. These are then further pigeonholed into higher-order thinking skills (HOTs) and lower-order thinking skills (LOTs). Not to forget Edward de Bono’s classification of lateral thinking and vertical thinking. All of which only intensifies one’s confusion instead of providing clarification.

While “thinking” is a highly desired skill, it eludes many because it is highly demanding until one is habituated. Then there is the inundation by print and social media and the fact that thinkers are often misunderstood and condemned.

Vital two

To engage learners in the cognitive process, we need to consider models and texts. Of the former, two have proven to be impactful: Hegelian dialectical thinking and Bono’s Six Thinking Hats. Dialectical thinking, although traced back to the Socratic method, is attributed to Hegel, the 19th century German philosopher who advocated seeking true meaning in two apparently contradictory positions. Instead of extremes such as “right” or “wrong”, he postulated moving away from “either-or” to “both-and”. In other words, right is not totally correct, and wrong is not totally wrong. An interesting metaphor illustrative of this model is “having an elephant in the room with two blindfolded people on its opposite ends”.

Bono’s Six Thinking Hats ideally comprises a group of six, each wearing a different hat. But it can also involve one individual wearing six hats one after another. Each hat has a colour that symbolises a different kind of thinking: white for facts, red for emotions, black for negatives, yellow for positives, green for new ideas and blue for summarising and decision-making. This helps learners tackle an issue from multiple perspectives and overcome the usual mono-dimensional thinking.

The problem confronting teachers is integrating this skill into prescribed textbooks, which may often be unyielding. This then compels them to browse through a high volume of texts available online in a variety of formats but how many are willing to do this?

Applications

The current Russia-Ukraine war is an apt context to apply dialectical thinking. While Russian president Vladimir Putin defends the war as an attempt to retrieve lost land and Russian pride; Ukraine and the west blame it on his autocratic behaviour and warmongering. Where does the truth lie? Achieving a dialectical balance is vital. The Six Thinking Hats would bring into focus aspects such as facts on both sides (white); the emotional turmoil of civilians and soldiers (red); sufferings of both nations and the world at large (black); positives if any for the two countries and globally (yellow); probable solutions to the problem (green); a standpoint based on critical engagement with the ideas put forth (blue).

We live in a tumultuous world of issues at local, national, regional and global levels. Tapping into them will be effortless, but narrowing them down to thought-provoking material for the classroom will be a challenge. Will our teachers think out of the box?

This Week In Games is a weekly column that tackles gaming’s biggest stories. This week, Jake Tucker argues that players shouldn’t presume to know better than the people who make their favourite game – especially when harassment comes into play.

What is it that makes game fans so eager to criticise the games they ostensibly love? That sounds dramatic, but it’s always tough to watch social media swell with lots of armchair experts, eager to claim they have the one idea a AAA game studio needs to fix its flagship product.

These ideas, made by untrained players who don’t have any idea in a lot of cases about the work that goes on behind the scenes and even which ideas might have been experimented on behind the scenes, are often not perfect.

This week we’ve been able to see not just one but two controversies at once. After the first week of its beta, there have been complaints that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is too different / similar, depending on who you ask. Elsewhere, a social media statement dropped on Twitter by Respawn Entertainment asking for fans to stop harassing their development team.

There’s a couple of different issues throughout these different complaints, but it all comes down to one crucial thing: fans of games seem to feel so much ownership that they can demand changes to the games they’re playing. Several responses to Respawn’s tweet suggested that if Respawn changed the things they wanted changed, the harassment would stop. “Then switch back the iron sight on the heat sink and don’t sell the reactive skin for $160” claimed one response. “You will get constructive feedback when you construct a playable and enjoyable game,” said another.

Elsewhere, streamers and content creators have complained that Modern Warfare 2 has changed the series trademark minimap, as it no longer shows little blips of enemies while shooting, something developer Infinity Ward has said is because they don’t want to punish players for firing their weapons. Which seems reasonable for a shooter. Others have complained that the time to kill is too different to previous games in the series, alternating between claims that it is too fast or too slow.

I personally think Modern Warfare 2’s minimap changes are positive, but it isn’t really about whether the changes are good or bad, or even about feedback in general. Constructive criticism makes just about everything better – journalists thrive on getting edited for example – but constructive criticism isn’t yelling at someone to fix their game, or demanding something is more in line with what you want.

Sadly, this isn’t a new issue. In March 2012, Mass Effect 3 released. The game’s ending was viewed by some fans as so bad that the community created a firestorm on social media, harassing developers and even going so far as to start a petition to demand Bioware change the game. Bioware changed the ending. There’s a great video by People Make Games where the developers talk about how much it impacted them, and if you’re the sort of person that might think of tweeting abuse, maybe watch the video to see the sort of impact this can have.

It would be easy to blame the Dunning–Kruger effect and write it off if it weren’t for the fact that in games it is often such a toxic event – and so often leads to the harassment of developers, disproportionately including those who identify as anything other than straight white men – that it’s one of the single biggest threats to open and transparent communication from developers out there.

As game developers and publishers start to get better at looking after their employees and their mental health, it seems less likely that this sustained pressure will get fans the things they think they want, and instead lead to developers isolating themselves further and being less transparent about upcoming developments. That’s bad news for the entire industry, so maybe if the angry fans could lay off the abuse we could all just enjoy games – the thing we’re supposed to be here for – and just have a nicer time in general.

"And it doesn't have to be a process. There can be a process, but there doesn't have to be. You're the president. You make that decision. So when you send it, it's declassified. Because I declassified everything."

FBI agents carried out a court-approved search of Trump's home in August as part of a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into whether the former president was hoarding classified and other sensitive documents. Trump responded with a civil lawsuit that successfully sought the appointment of a special master, an independent arbiter to sort out private materials hauled away by FBI agents.

DOJ lawyers have argued in court filings that Trump has not proven that he declassified the documents. Trump's legal team additionally has not argued that the documents were declassified.

Judge Raymond Dearie, the recently appointed special master in the case, asked Trump's lawyers to provide details on the former president's declassification of documents. Trump's legal team earlier this week objected and suggested that doing so would mean disclosing their defense to a potential future indictment of the former president.

Dearie reportedly told Trump's lawyers during a hearing Tuesday that they cannot "have your cake and eat it too."

Others have disputed Trump's claim that he declassified documents he took to Mar-a-Lago at the end of his presidency—including members of his inner circle.

Mick Mulvaney, who served as Trump's acting chief of staff from January 2019 to March 2020, said during a Newsmax interview in August that there's "a formal structure" to declassifying documents.

"You can't just sort of stand over a box of documents, wave your hand and say these are all declassified," he said. "That's not how the system works."

Other high-ranking members of Trump's administration, including former Chief of Staff John Kelly and former national security adviser John Bolton, said they were unaware of any "standing order" to declassify documents taken to his residence.
