Rising temperatures, floods, droughts, wildfires and other offshoots of climate change present major challenges to economies and communities around the world. As a result, businesses are feeling the pressure to adopt new strategies to reduce their carbon footprint in the long term. But many have yet to prepare themselves for the impact that climate change can and will have on their operations.

Many companies are already feeling the heat, experiencing climate-related damage to their assets, and disruptions to supply chains. According to a exact report from the World Economic Forum, global heat waves and other extreme weather conditions could also cause a spike in the cost of raw materials for production, which would inevitably present huge revenue losses across sectors.

With such a high risk the question is, why have so few businesses prepared for the potential effects of climate change?

The complicated world of climate data

While an overwhelming majority of businesses have plans in place for cyberattacks and Covid-19, the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2021 found that extreme weather, climate action failure, and human-led environmental damage are in fact the top three most likely risks for businesses over the next ten years. Yet, many still don’t have clear strategies and risk analyses in place to guide decision-making.

“One of the major challenges for general business operations is that companies are still getting familiar with the many variables involved in collecting climate data,” says Miguel Modestino, an Associate Professor and Director of the Sustainable Engineering Initiative at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering.

Indeed, tracking climate data requires historical weather data, sensors, intensive manual labor, computing power, as well as internal climate and data science skills. An EY study found that only 41% of organizations conduct scenario analysis of climate-related risks. This means that, in the increasingly likely event that a weather-related disaster does occur, many organizations don’t have a clear picture of what the potential risks, costs, and action plan would be. Without this understanding, prevention measures, budgeting, and other essential decision-making becomes a guessing game for business leaders who need to present this information to investors and other stakeholders.

“We’re sitting on this mountain of information, yet we’re only looking at the tip of the iceberg. There’s all of this high value data out there including observations about our planet Earth, but we’re not taking advantage of that to make better decisions,” Hamann explains.

Curbing climate impact with new tech

Geospatial analysis is key to unlocking the potential of climate data – but these insights are based on massive amounts of complex and disparate data types, including satellite, GPS, and historical weather data and imagery. The use of AI and machine learning holds great potential for helping businesses access and analyze these datasets in a way that is more manageable.

“With AI, companies can also develop advanced models that use machine learning to really quickly calculate the environmental impact of a particular set of business operations,” Modestino explains. “Having efficient machine learning models can help optimize their operations to maximize profit while maintaining a particular climate target.”

IBM recently launched its Environmental Intelligence Suite (EIS) which brings together a wide variety of weather, climate, AI and operational technologies into a single software as a service offering that companies can use to better plan for and respond to climate risks.

  • Almost half (47%) of surveyed CSCOs said they have introduced new automation technologies in the last two years—an approach that can add predictability, flexibility, and intelligence to supply chain operations, and they're using AI to help monitor and track performance.

Sustainability is both a challenge and a force for change.

  • Surveyed CSCOs rank sustainability as their third biggest challenge in the next few years, trailing only supply chain disruptions and technology infrastructure.

  • 52% place sustainability at or near the top of their priority list.

  • 50% report that their sustainability investments will accelerate business growth.

Batch 2 of the Chief Operations Officer Programme by IIM Lucknow is set to begin in December. This program, in collaboration with Emeritus — a platform aimed at providing quality online learning for in-demand skills — will be taught by the leading faculty at IIM Lucknow. This programme aims to upskill professionals toward leading operational excellence and business growth.


PTI report stated that IIM Lucknow is ranked sixth among the top business schools in India as per NIRF 2022. The institute announced that the Chief Operations Officer Programme will be launched on December 30, 2022. The first batch of this 11-month programme — which received a rating of 4.4 out of 5 — trains business leaders and aspiring new COOs to gain the skills required to Excellerate their organisation’s operational efficiency resilience to disruption and scale sustainable business growth, stated the report.


According to a study by IBM Insight, 2021, about 81% of the COOs in the world rely on data to Excellerate their organisation’s operational efficiency. This data is based on customer demand, technology and data that is undergoing seismic shifts. Increasingly, COOs are at the forefront of their organisation's sprint toward transformation.
The PTI report also stated that the position of a COO in a company is essential for the growth of the business and the COO must find new ways to recalibrate their priorities and focus on cost control and efficiency.
 

This programme by the IIM Lucknow will train the students to take up mid and senior-level operational leaders and business heads who want to increase their existing knowledge and transition into COO roles. This training will allow these professionals to enhance their practical aligned and industry-aligned skills with a robust knowledge of both digital and engineering operations management roles. The sessions of this programme will be organised through an online session that is in collaboration with the Emeritus and five-day in-campus sessions in which the lead faculty of IIM Lucknow will be coaching. The PTI report stated that this will have a good impact as eight of ten IIM Lucknow professors were senior professionals and business leaders with over 10 years of experience in the field.

 
Commenting on the launch of the programme, Programme Directors, Dr Suresh K Jakhar, Associate Professor, Operations Management and Dr Himanshu Rathore, Assistant Professor, Operations Management, IIM Lucknow, said, “As traditional boundaries fade, a COO must go beyond operational excellence and become a company's strategic steward. In a modern world of complexity and rapid changes, there are two kinds of organisations.” He added, "As a Chief Operations Officer, how do you ensure your organisation is a thriver? How do you increase responsiveness, create new sources of value, and develop sustainable growth? We have designed the programme curriculum to provide the right balance between functional excellence and visionary growth,” as reported by PTI.


Mohan Kannegal, CEO of India and APAC Emeritus, added, “As per PWC's 25th CEO survey, Indian leaders are including new metrics in their companies' long-term corporate strategy. 81% include customer satisfaction metrics, while 75% focus on employee engagement metrics and 78% include automation and digitisation goals. Sustainability is both a challenge and a force for change.

  • Surveyed CSCOs rank sustainability as their third biggest challenge in the next few years, trailing only supply chain disruptions and technology infrastructure.
  • 52% place sustainability at or near the top of their priority list.
  • 50% report that their sustainability investments will accelerate business growth.
