According to Morgan Stanley, the revenue generated by the global space industry may rise to more than $1 trillion by 2040.

A lot of the action is predictably happening in the US, with companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin grabbing most of the headlines.

But Australia also has a burgeoning space scene, and local space startups here are making giant leaps recently.

Sydney-based incubator Cicada Innovations is right in the midst of the action. Working at the forefront of innovation, Cicada supports ventures seeking to create life-changing technology by applying cutting-edge science.

In February, Cicada, with support from the NSW Government, delivered and launched the National Space Industry Hub (NSIH) in Eveleigh, Sydney.

The Space Hub residency is open for startups who wish to be based within Cicada’s deep tech incubator.

It also offers resources, mentoring and connections for emerging space ventures, as well as bringing together industry and researchers to ensure we’re at the forefront of this highly competitive industry.

The NSIH received a major boost recently after Microsoft was announced as its first ‘Constellation Partner’.

The global giant is expected to invest its time, capabilities and human capital in the innovators, entrepreneurs, and researchers who form the NSIH community.

Building a thriving space industry

The NSIH Constellation Partners Program was especially designed to engage industry and foster investment in the local space industry.

Microsoft’s involvement will allow NSIH to expand its national programs and become sustainable over the long term, following initial funding from the NSW Government.

The global giant is expected to contribute in enhancing NSIH’s commercialisation programs, including through events and workshops, free technology credits for participants, and mentoring.

NSIH members will be supported by Microsoft technology advisors and Microsoft Azure Space engineers as they build their solutions for commercial use.

Sally-Ann Williams, CEO of Cicada Innovations, said that strengthening ties between space innovators and industry will be critical for building a local space industry that is globally competitive.

What Microsoft brings to the table

Microsoft’s decision to partner with NSIH reflects the US giant’s approach and strategy to making space accessible and affordable.

The company aims to integrate its powerful Azure cloud platform with an ecosystem of space partners around the world in order to develop a multi-orbit, multi-band, multi-vendor, cloud-enabled capability.

The partnership with the NSIH follows several other exact initiatives by Microsoft Australia to power the growth of the local space industry.

In August last year, the Microsoft for Space Startups Australia program was launched to support emerging enterprises focused on cloud-powered innovation, on and off the planet.

That was followed up in September by a ground-breaking collaboration with Nokia and the Government of South Australia to innovate on space technology and 5G telecommunications.

In the same month, Microsoft also signed an MoU with the Australian Institute for Machine Learning to jointly explore how advanced cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and computer vision can be applied in space.

It’s also currently working with the CSIRO on an initiative to use AI, space technology, and cloud capabilities to track feral buffalo.

After 14 years of development and six months of calibration, the James Webb Space Telescope is finally ready to embark on its mission to probe the depths of our cosmos. On Monday, NASA and President Joe Biden shared the first colored image from the space telescope, showcasing a look at the early days of the universe.

According to NASA, "Webb's First Deep Field" represents the sharpest and "deepest" image of the distant universe to date. What you see is a snapshot of a cluster of galaxies known as SMACS 0723 as they appeared 4.6 billion years ago. The combined mass of all the galaxies pictured acts as a gravitational lens, magnifying the much more distant celestial bodies seen in the background. Some of the galaxies have never-before-seen features that astronomers will soon study to learn more about the history of our universe. NASA notes Webb's First Deep Field doesn't represent our earliest look at the universe. Microwave telescopes like the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) captured snapshots closer to the Big Bang but did not offer a view of stars and galaxies like the one captured by Webb.    

“Mr. President, if you held a grain of sand on the tip of your finger at arm’s length, that is the part of the universe that you’re seeing,” NASA administrator Bill Nelson told President Biden during Monday's briefing. “Just one little speck of the universe.”

Getting to this historic moment has been a long road for NASA. When the JWST was first announced, the agency’s plan was to launch the telescope in 2007. After a redesign in 2005, NASA finally completed work on the project in 2016 and said the spacecraft would be ready to launch by 2018. In 2019, NASA completed assembly of the telescope, but then the pandemic hit, leading to further delays in testing and shipping. All told, those delays eventually led to the JWST project costing $10 billion. 

NASA's decision to name its most advanced space telescope ever after former agency administrator James Webb has also been a source of controversy. Before Webb oversaw the Mercury, Gemini and early Apollo programs at NASA, he worked at the US State Department during a time when the agency fired hundreds of gay and lesbian personnel. In September, NASA said it would not change the name of the JWST. 

The image Biden shared today is only the first of a handful of photos NASA plans to share this week from the JWST. The rest of the initial slate will arrive tomorrow morning at 9:45PM ET when NASA hosts a press conference with Webb leadership. NASA Delays Mission VIPER Moon Rover Launch To 2024

NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative allows rapid acquisition of lunar delivery services from American companies for payloads that advance capabilities for science, exploration or commercial development of the Moon.

Through CLPS, NASA contracted Astrobotic of Pittsburgh to deliver the agency’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) to the lunar surface in search of ice and other potential resources. The measurements returned by VIPER will provide insight into the origin and distribution of water on the Moon and help determine how the Moon’s resources could be harvested for future human space exploration.

While VIPER was originally scheduled for lunar delivery by Astrobotic in November 2023, NASA has requested the Astrobotic and VIPER mission teams to adjust VIPER’s delivery to the Moon’s South Pole to November 2024.

NASA’s decision to pursue a 2024 delivery date results from the agency’s request to Astrobotic for additional ground testing of the company’s Griffin lunar lander, which will deliver VIPER to the lunar surface through CLPS. The additional tests aim to reduce the overall risk to VIPER’s delivery to the Moon. To complete the additional NASA-mandated tests of the Griffin lunar lander, an additional $67.8 million has been added to Astrobotic’s CLPS contract, which now totals $320.4 million.

“Through CLPS, NASA has tasked U.S. companies to perform a very challenging technological feat – to successfully land and operate on the Moon,” said Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

“VIPER is NASA’s largest and most sophisticated science payload to be delivered to the Moon through CLPS, and we’ve implemented enhanced lander testing for this particular CLPS surface delivery.”

CLPS is a key part of NASA’s Artemis lunar exploration plans. The science and technology payloads sent to the Moon’s surface will help lay the foundation for human missions on and around the Moon. The agency has made seven task order awards to CLPS providers for lunar deliveries between in the early 2020s with more delivery awards expected through 2028.
