CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — IBM (NYSE: IBM) Security released the annual Cost of a Data Breach Report, revealing costlier and higher-impact data breaches than ever before, with the global average cost of a data breach reaching an all-time high of $4.35 million for studied organizations. With breach costs increasing nearly 13% over the last two years of the report, the findings suggest these incidents may also be contributing to rising costs of goods and services. In fact, 60% of studied organizations raised their product or services prices due to the breach, when the cost of goods is already soaring worldwide amid inflation and supply chain issues.

The perpetuality of cyberattacks is also shedding light on the “haunting effect” data breaches are having on businesses, with the IBM report finding 83% of studied organizations have experienced more than one data breach in their lifetime. Another factor rising over time is the after-effects of breaches on these organizations, which linger long after they occur, as nearly 50% of breach costs are incurred more than a year after the breach.

The 2022 Cost of a Data Breach Report is based on in-depth analysis of real-world data breaches experienced by 550 organizations globally between March 2021 and March 2022. The research, which was sponsored and analyzed by IBM Security, was conducted by the Ponemon Institute.

Some of the key findings in the 2022 IBM report include:

  • Critical Infrastructure Lags in Zero Trust – Almost 80% of critical infrastructure organizations studied don’t adopt zero trust strategies, seeing average breach costs rise to $5.4 million – a $1.17 million increase compared to those that do. All while 28% of breaches amongst these organizations were ransomware or destructive attacks.
  • It Doesn’t Pay to Pay – Ransomware victims in the study that opted to pay threat actors’ ransom demands saw only $610,000 less in average breach costs compared to those that chose not to pay – not including the cost of the ransom. Factoring in the high cost of ransom payments, the financial toll may rise even higher, suggesting that simply paying the ransom may not be an effective strategy.
  • Security Immaturity in Clouds – Forty-three percent of studied organizations are in the early stages or have not started applying security practices across their cloud environments, observing over $660,000 on average in higher breach costs than studied organizations with mature security across their cloud environments.
  • Security AI and Automation Leads as Multi-Million Dollar Cost Saver – Participating organizations fully deploying security AI and automation incurred $3.05 million less on average in breach costs compared to studied organizations that have not deployed the technology – the biggest cost saver observed in the study.

Over-trusting Critical Infrastructure Organizations

Concerns over critical infrastructure targeting appear to be increasing globally over the past year, with many governments’ cybersecurity agencies urging vigilance against disruptive attacks. In fact, IBM’s report reveals that ransomware and destructive attacks represented 28% of breaches amongst critical infrastructure organizations studied, highlighting how threat actors are seeking to fracture the global supply chains that rely on these organizations. This includes financial services, industrial, transportation and healthcare companies amongst others.

Despite the call for caution, and a year after the Biden Administration issued a cybersecurity executive order that centers around the importance of adopting a zero trust approach to strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity, only 21% of critical infrastructure organizations studied adopt a zero trust security model, according to the report. Add to that, 17% of breaches at critical infrastructure organizations were caused due to a business partner being initially compromised, highlighting the security risks that over-trusting environments pose.

Businesses that Pay the Ransom Aren’t Getting a “Bargain”

According to the 2022 IBM report, businesses that paid threat actors’ ransom demands saw $610,000 less in average breach costs compared to those that chose not to pay – not including the ransom amount paid. However, when accounting for the average ransom payment, which according to Sophos reached $812,000 in 2021, businesses that opt to pay the ransom could net higher total costs – all while inadvertently funding future ransomware attacks with capital that could be allocated to remediation and recovery efforts and looking at potential federal offenses.

The persistence of ransomware, despite significant global efforts to impede it, is fueled by the industrialization of cybercrime. IBM Security X-Force discovered the duration of studied enterprise ransomware attacks shows a drop of 94% over the past three years – from over two months to just under four days. These exponentially shorter attack lifecycles can prompt higher impact attacks, as cybersecurity incident responders are left with very short windows of opportunity to detect and contain attacks. With “time to ransom” dropping to a matter of hours, it’s essential that businesses prioritize rigorous testing of incident response (IR) playbooks ahead of time. But the report states that as many as 37% of organizations studied that have incident response plans don’t test them regularly.

Hybrid Cloud Advantage

The report also showcased hybrid cloud environments as the most prevalent (45%) infrastructure amongst organizations studied. Averaging $3.8 million in breach costs, businesses that adopted a hybrid cloud model observed lower breach costs compared to businesses with a solely public or private cloud model, which experienced $5.02 million and $4.24 million on average respectively. In fact, hybrid cloud adopters studied were able to identify and contain data breaches 15 days faster on average than the global average of 277 days for participants.

The report highlights that 45% of studied breaches occurred in the cloud, emphasizing the importance of cloud security. However, a significant 43% of reporting organizations stated they are just in the early stages or have not started implementing security practices to protect their cloud environments, observing higher breach costs2. Businesses studied that did not implement security practices across their cloud environments required an average 108 more days to identify and contain a data breach than those consistently applying security practices across all their domains.

Additional findings in the 2022 IBM report include:

  • Phishing Becomes Costliest Breach Cause – While compromised credentials continued to reign as the most common cause of a breach (19%), phishing was the second (16%) and the costliest cause, leading to $4.91 million in average breach costs for responding organizations.
  • Healthcare Breach Costs Hit Double Digits for First Time Ever– For the 12th year in a row, healthcare participants saw the costliest breaches amongst industries with average breach costs in healthcare increasing by nearly $1 million to reach a record high of $10.1 million.
  • Insufficient Security Staffing – Sixty-two percent of studied organizations stated they are not sufficiently staffed to meet their security needs, averaging $550,000 more in breach costs than those that state they are sufficiently staffed.

Killexams : Quantitative Home-based Assessment of Parkinson's Symptoms: The SENSE-PARK Feasibility and Usability Study

Methods

A multi-centre, open-label, feasibility and usability study comprising 22 participants was conducted. Eleven PD patients were invited to use the SENSE-PARK System for 12 weeks and perform clinical assessments every other week. The other 11 patients only completed the clinical assessments.

The primary outcome was the frequency of drop-outs and the first secondary outcome was assessed through the IBM Post-Study Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ - rating score from 1, best, to 7, worst).

Technology Overview

The SENSE-PARK System consists of a set of wearable sensors (3 to be used during the day and one at night), a Wii Balance Board, software and a smartphone app (Fig. 1).

The sensors monitor movements of PD patients during daily activities, collecting motor-related raw data. Accelerometers and angular rate sensors measure the motion of the user, and map certain activities. When awake, the user wears a small sensor at the wrist and the leg of the more affected side, as well as at the lower back according to Fig. 1. When asleep, the user wears one sensor at the lower back only. This set of sensors, together with algorithms developed during the SENSE-PARK project phase, allows monitoring parameters associated with gait, hypokinesia, dyskinesia, tremor and sleep. Through the Wii Balance Board, data such as body weight and sway are also collected. The user also performs cognitive tests through specific software. These tests use virtual environments on a screen to evaluate specific cognitive domains, including alertness, divided attention, response control, visual exploration and working and topological memory.

Staff Training

A two day investigator meeting was conducted to train staff, including installation of equipment, and procedures for training participants in the use of the System. Investigators received training in test administration and scoring.

Participants

A trial of 22 PD patients was divided into two groups: SENSE-PARK System users and non-users. Inclusion criteria were (1) PD patients between 40 and 85 years of age, (2) stage 1 to 2.5 (ON) of the Modified Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) scale[4] and (3) having experience or interest in technical equipment (computer, regular mouse and keyboard).

Exclusion criteria included (1) illiteracy, (2) ≤24 in the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE),[5] (3) postural instability item MDS-UPDRS > 2, (4) inability to handle the device for some other reason.

There were no restrictions on prior and concomitant therapy. An approval was obtained from the local ethics committee at the three sites (University of Lisbon, Portugal; University of Tübingen, Germany; and University of Tromsö, Norway), and in compliance with national legislation and Declaration of Helsinki.

Study Design and Assessments

After signing the informed consent, participants were screened for eligibility. For the group of users, a home visit was scheduled to ensure users had the required home facilities for the use of the SENSE-PARK System and to install the full system (the mouse setting was defined according to the hand the user normally writes with). The users were also invited to perform a demo session, in order to get acquainted with the SENSE-PARK System. Only balance and cognitive testing had to be performed "actively". On cognitive test occasions, patients were instructed to be seated in a chair in front of the computer and place the computer and mouse on a table. Balance tests had to be performed with a Wii Balance Board which was connected to the local computer and the SENSE-PARK System. The other domains' data were collected with the sensors which were worn 24 hours per day: three to be used during the day and one at night.

After the installation, participants used the SENSE-PARK System at home for one week and then they were observed by the investigator who registered whether the participants made mistakes during the tasks and whether they needed assistance. When necessary, another week of training was allowed. The time needed for confident SENSE-PARK System operation, test taking, data storage and data transfer was recorded. As soon as the user was able to use the SENSE-PARK System adequately and it was working properly, the assessment phase of the study started.

During the assessment period, patients who used the SENSE-PARK System were asked to perform sway assessment and cognitive tests every other day at a similar time of day during ON stage. Patients selected, in advance, the days of the week they would perform their testing, which was then programmed into the SENSE-PARK System with a reminder coming up on the interface of the software. An ongoing check of data arrival allowed users who were near to missing their two day window to be contacted by the study staff. If any problems or questions developed, users had access to the study staff for backup support.

Every other week during the study, participants from both groups returned to a health professional expert in movement disorders or were visited to perform the control of concomitant medications, check data download, record the occurrence of any Adverse Event, confirm patient compliance and to perform the following rating scales: MDS-UPDRS,[1] H&Y,[4] Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA),[6] Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE),[5] Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39),[7] EQ-5D,[8] Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS),[9] Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS),[10] Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS),[11] Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UdysRS),[12] Clinical Global Impression - Severity Scale and Improvement Scale (CGI-S and CGI-I).[13]

Between investigator visits, semi-structured interviews were conducted by phone to gain insight into the experiences of the participants using the SENSE-PARK System. Topics discussed were: willingness to continue in the study, satisfaction with the SENSE-PARK System, changes in health status or medical condition, adverse events, feedback messages and doubts about the system. Those participants who were not using the SENSE-PARK System were asked about willingness to continue in the study, health status, medical condition and adverse events (usability evaluation).

After 4 weeks of active data collection with the SENSE-PARK System, the participants received a modified version of the software. This new version provided feedback to users (Fig. 2).

At the end of the study period (V8), participants were asked to fill in the IBM Post-Study Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ)[14] which assesses user satisfaction with, and usability of, technical devices. It is a 19-item closed-ended ordinal questionnaire, based on 7-point graphic Likert scales. The items address five important components of user satisfaction with general computer systems usability: ease of use, ease of learning, simplicity, effectiveness, information, and the user interface.[15]

Statistical Analysis

Statistical analyses were performed in R, version 3.0.3. Subject demographic and clinical data were examined by descriptive summary. Usability was assessed for system users and was tested with the PSSUQ values obtained at the end of the study (see above). Feasibility was assessed for users and non-users. For non-users, feasibility was assessed through willingness to continue in the study and through completeness of the study, i.e. withdrawals from the study. For users, feasibility was assessed through the following indices: willingness to continue in the study and through completeness of the study, duration of time to train participants to use the SENSE-PARK System confidently, compliance in terms of the number of completed test sessions and their timeliness with every other day assessments, compliance/adherence to system measures, success of data transfer and decryption, ease of use and program satisfaction.[16,17]

IBM has launched an Internet of Things system as part of Watson. The tools is called Cognitive Visual Inspection, and the idea is to provide manufacturers with a “cognitive assistant” on the factory floor to minimize defects and increase product quality. According to IBM, in early production-cycle testing, Watson was able to reduce 80% of the inspection time while reducing manufacturing defects by 7-10%.

The system uses an ultra-high definition camera and adds cognitive capabilities from Watson to create a tool that captures images of products as they move through production and assembly. Together with human inspectors, Watson recognizes defects in products, including scratches or pinhole-size punctures.

“Watson brings its cognitive capabilities to image recognition,” Bret Greenstein, VP of IoT at IBM, told Design News. “We’re applying this to a wide range of industries, including electronics and automotive.”

The Inspection Eye That Never Tires

The system continuously learns based on human assessment of the defect classifications in the images. The tool was designed to help manufacturers achieve specialization levels that were not possible with previous human or machine inspection. “We created a system and workflow to feed images of good and bad products into Watson and train it with algorithms,” said Greenstein. “This is a system that you can be trained in advance to see what acceptable products look like.”

According to IBM, more than half of product quality checks involve some form of visual confirmation. Visual checking helps ensure that all parts are in the correct location, have the right shape or color or texture, and are free from scratches, holes or foreign particles. Automating these visual checks is difficult due to volume and product variety. Add to that the challenge from defects that can be any size, from a tiny puncture to a cracked windshield on a vehicle.

Some of the inspection training precedes Watson’s appearance on the manufacturing line. “There are several components. You define the range of images, and feed the images into Watson. When it produces the confidence level you need, you push it to the operator stations,” said Greenstein. “Watson concludes whether the product awesome or defective. You let the system make the decision.”

The ultimate goal is to keep Watson on a continuous learning curve. “We can push this system out to different manufacturing lines, and we can train it based on operators in the field and suggest changes to make the system smarter, creating an evolving inspection process,” said Greenstein.

The ABB Partnership

As part of its move into the factory, IBM has formed a strategic collaboration with ABB. The goal is to combine ABB’s domain knowledge and digital solutions with IBM’s artificial intelligence and machine-learning capabilities. The first two joint industry solutions powered by ABB Ability and Watson were designed to bring real-time cognitive insights to the factory floor and smart grids.

Where Did Kaspersky Go?

Kaspersky Anti-Virus has topped the antivirus lab testing charts for many years, garnering perfect scores, or at least near-perfect. It has also held PCMag's Editors' Choice honor for countless years. It's both attractive and effective. And it no longer appears in our list of best antivirus products. Here's why.

For years, Kaspersky has faced accusations and censure based on its Russian origins, though none of the accusations have come backed by hard evidence of malicious behavior. We at PCMag focused on the capabilities of the products, not on the brouhaha around the company. However, the current war in Ukraine has raised the stakes. Governments and third parties are cutting ties with Kaspersky. The FCC labeled Kaspersky a national security risk.

After consideration, we can no longer recommend you purchase Kaspersky security products. We've left the reviews in place, with a warning, since they provide useful information. But at least for now, we're removing Kaspersky products from our "Best of" lists.


What Are Viruses, Malware, and Ransomware?

We call it antivirus, but in truth it's unlikely you'll get hit with an genuine computer virus. Malware these days is about making money, and there's no easy way to cash in on spreading a virus. Ransomware and data-stealing Trojans are much more common, as are bots that let the bot-herder rent out your computer for nefarious purposes. Modern antivirus utilities handle Trojans, rootkits, spyware, adware, ransomware, and more. As noted, PCMag has reviewed more than 40 different commercial antivirus utilities, and that's not even counting the many free antivirus tools. Out of that extensive field we've named several Editors' Choice products and honored others with a four-star rating. If you have malware, one of the products listed in this article should take care of the problem.

These commercial products offer protection beyond the antivirus built into Windows; the best free antivirus utilities also offer more than Windows does. However, Microsoft Windows Defender Security Center is looking better and better lately, with some very good scores from independent testing labs. The combination of good lab scores and a great score in our hands-on malware protection test was enough to bring it up to 3.5 stars. It doesn't appear in this roundup of commercial antivirus products, naturally.


We Listen to the Antivirus Testing Labs

We take the results reported by independent antivirus testing labs very seriously. The simple fact that a company's product shows up in the results is a vote of confidence, of sorts. It means the lab considered the product significant, and the company felt the cost of testing was worthwhile. Of course, high scores in the tests are also important.

We follow four labs that regularly release detailed reports: SE Labs, AV-Test Institute(Opens in a new window), MRG-Effitas, and AV-Comparatives. We've devised a system for aggregating their results to yield a rating from 0 to 10.


How We Test Malware, Spyware, and Adware Defenses

We also subject every product to our own hands-on test of malware protection, in part to get a feeling for how the product works. Depending on how thoroughly the product prevents malware installation, it can earn up to 10 points for malware protection.

Our malware protection test necessarily uses the same set of samples for months. To check a product's handling of brand-new malware, we test each product using a large collection of extremely new malware-hosting URLs supplied by MRG-Effitas(Opens in a new window), noting what percentage of them it blocked. Products get equal credit for preventing all access to the malicious URL and for wiping out the malware during download.

Some products earn stellar ratings from the independent labs, yet don't fare as well in our hands-on tests. What's the Best Antivirus for Malware?

Antivirus products distinguish themselves by going beyond the basics of on-demand scanning and real-time malware protection. Some rate URLs that you visit or that show up in search results, using a red-yellow-green color-coding system. Some actively block processes on your system from connecting with known malware-hosting URLs or with fraudulent (phishing) pages.

Software has flaws, and sometimes those flaws affect your security. Prudent users keep Windows and all programs patched, fixing those flaws as soon as possible. The vulnerability scan offered by some antivirus products can verify all necessary patches are present, and even apply any that are missing.

Spyware comes in many forms, from hidden programs that log your every keystroke to Trojans that masquerade as valid programs while mining your personal data. Any antivirus should handle spyware, along with all other types of malware, but some include specialized components devoted to spyware protection.

You expect an antivirus to identify and eliminate bad programs, and to leave good programs alone. What about unknowns, programs it can't identify as good or bad? Behavior-based detection can, in theory, protect you against malware that's so new researchers have never encountered it. However, this isn't always an unmixed blessing. It's not uncommon for behavioral detection systems to flag many innocuous behaviors performed by legitimate programs.

Allow-listing is another approach to the problem of unknown programs. This type of security system only allows known good programs to run. Unknowns are banned. This mode doesn't suit all situations, but it can be useful. Sandboxing lets unknown programs run, but it isolates them from full access to your system, so they can't do permanent harm. These various added layers serve to enhance your protection against malware.

Your antivirus utility works in the background to keep out any faint possibility of infestation by malware, but its abilities don't extend beyond the bounds of your computer. When you connect to the wild and wooly internet, you risk the possibility your data could be compromised in transit. A jobseeker has questioned why her Workforce Australia provider made her complete an online personality test that asked how well she expressed love, whether she gives into temptation, and which judged if “spirituality” and “zest” were among her strengths.

Emma Rayward, 33, said she was told by her employment consultant to take the test at her first compulsory meeting with Asuria, which has more than $150m in job services contracts under Workforce Australia.

“She said … these personality tests were coming from Workforce Australia, which kind of indicated to me that this was something I needed to do,” Rayward said.

In fact, the free online survey of character strengths was created by Cincinnati, Ohio-based non-profit the VIA Institute on Character and has no connection to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.

To complete the test, which takes less than 15 minutes, Rayward needed to create a profile with the company, using her personal email address.

The test included statements such as “I experience emotions when I see beautiful things”, “I am good at expressing love to someone else”, “My faith makes me who I am” and “I do not supply into temptation”, with the respondent required to answer on a five-point scale from “very much like me” to “very much unlike me”.

After she completed the test, Rayward received a “character strengths profile”, listing 24 different character traits in order from most to least applicable.

“It felt really pointless, but also I didn’t understand it,” Rayward said. “And I felt uncomfortable and very weird about it.

“Especially with the questions about appreciation of beauty and spirituality. Like, one of them is ‘zest’. If I ‘approach life with excitement and energy’.”

The VIA Institute on Character states that IBM, Coca-Cola, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the US army are among the organisations that have used its services, which are based on the relatively new theory of “positive psychology”.

Rayward said she was aware personality tests were used in the corporate world, but said in this case the findings had little connection back to her career. She said she received a follow-up email from VIA that included a few links that encouraged me to buy further tests, which she found “really inappropriate”.

“My strengths on my personality test were ‘love of learning’, ‘honesty’, and ‘creativity’,” she said. “And [the consultant] repeated that back to me, but then didn’t connect that with any kind of employment.

“I know in a number of corporations it can be common to do the Myers Briggs MBTI personality tests, so they can understand your work type. And they place a lot on this idea of … personality types, but it’s something that I just really don’t agree with.”

Generally under the mutual obligations system, jobseekers must attend meetings with their consultant to keep their benefits, while the initial appointment triggers a $600 service fee payment to the provider.

Under the contracts of the $1.5bn-a-year Workforce Australia program, this initial interview must be used to “ascertain a participant’s skills, strengths and any issues that may impact on a participant’s ability to find employment”.

Rayward said her consultant asked her to complete two other questionnaires. One had more conventional, but very general questions related to her employment history and career aspirations, while the other asked questions to “get to know” her.

“They were things like, if I could go anywhere in the world, where would I go? If I got million dollars, what would I spend it on?” she said.

Rayward said little of the 30-minute appointment was devoted to discussing her specific circumstances, including the fact she is completing a Doctorate of Creative Arts, which concludes in two months, and what industries she might pursue afterwards.

“It feels very frustrating that these job agencies are receiving all this money for what feels to be very pointless activity, while welfare itself sits below the poverty line,” she said.

An Asuria spokesperson said the provider had used the VIA Institute on Character test for seven years. It is not mandatory for jobseekers.

“This insight can help individuals identify jobs that would enable them to use their strengths,” the spokesperson said.

“It can also help to build self-worth and self-efficacy, which have been evidenced to Strengthen positive outcomes.

“Beyond this [if] an interviewer asks, ‘what will you bring to this company?’, this assessment provides an academically validated list of the job seeker’s true value they can bring to an organisation.”

The spokesperson said the question set had resulted from a three-year, 55-scientist study and was “used throughout our service delivery model to inform a personalised, strengths-based approach to preparing for and finding employment”.

Guardian Australia has reported extensively on the mutual obligations system, which underpins the privatised employment services model.

In the new Workforce Australia program, it has led to perverse outcomes including providers insisting on jobseekers attending appointments even if it has meant missing work or travelling more than 100km.

Another jobseeker said he was made by his Asuria consultant to complete an online employability course that included a basic computer and literacy test, despite having tertiary qualifications.

The Albanese government on Tuesday announced it would establish a parliamentary committee to look at Workforce Australia after flagging concerns about the design of the contracts.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations was approached for comment.
