Hundreds of people line up outside an Apple store in Chicago to buy the iPhone 4 in 2010. Apple had removed its products from EPEAT's registry of environmentally friendly electronic devices but later reversed course.
It's not often that one of the world's biggest companies says, "We goofed."
But in a surprising turn of events Friday, Apple admitted it made a mistake in pulling out of an environmental rating system for computers and other electronics. The company said it would rejoin the so-called EPEAT certification system, placing all 39 of its originally certified products back on the list. The company is also requesting certification for more products, including its new MacBook Pro model.
Apple's move comes after the company started to get hammered by customers who were not pleased by the company's initial decision.
For years, Apple has been actively working with EPEAT, a nonprofit that created environmental standards and a rating system for computers and other electronics.
But over the long Fourth of July weekend, when not many people were paying attention, Apple told EPEAT, which stands for Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, that it wanted to opt out of its rating system. Then, Apple removed all of its products from the group's environmentally certified list. All of the products had earned EPEAT's highest rating.
The company was bound to lose some sales from this initial decision. The federal government, cities including San Francisco and some companies have purchasing guidelines that favor EPEAT-certified products. Industry analysts say ultimately, the financial hit to Apple probably wouldn't have been much, but the company's reputation was clearly sullied in this episode.
It's still unclear why Apple decided to pull out of EPEAT's registry in the first place. Many observers suggest Apple was concerned that its existing products, including the MacBook Pro with Retina display, would not meet basic EPEAT standards and would not receive the green certification. Others speculate the company simply didn't want to be part of what it viewed as an antiquated product registry — one that didn't reward its environmental innovations.
But whatever the motive, the company heard from lots of customers who were not happy with its decision. A couple of days ago, Apple called EPEAT and talked about rejoining the list. On Friday, the company announced on its website that it had rejoined the certification process.
Within 20 minutes of the news, EPEAT's website, not exactly a household URL, was swamped with online visitors and crashed — an indication of how much attention Apple's decision has received.
Lingering Environmental Concerns
But environmentalists and some industry watchers remain concerned about the design trend in Apple's new products. While concerned consumers may welcome the news of Apple's rejoining EPEAT's registry, there are still unresolved environmental issues about the company's existing products.
According to Kyle Wiens, founder of the online repair site iFixit, Apple is now moving toward thinner and thinner laptops with glued-in batteries, which are difficult to recycle.
"This is like selling a car with tires that are welded to the car so that the only way to swap out the tires is to take it back to the manufacturer," says Wiens, who adds that replacing batteries is part of routine laptop maintenance.
Still, Apple has also made it clear that it wants to play a big role in helping to craft new EPEAT standards. In many respects, Apple has been an environmental leader, and the company wants to make sure it is rewarded, and gets credit for, its own green initiatives.

If you're looking at buying your first Apple Watch, the Watch SE 2 shouldn't be your budget pick, it should be your starting point. Apple's affordable smartwatch offers all the tools and features most users will need, plus unrivaled app support and highly-accurate fitness tracking. The lack of blood oxygen monitoring is a questionable miss and you'll have to live without the Series 8's larger, always-on display, but if you only want the essentials, there's no reason not to save your cash.
The second generation Apple Watch SE checks a lot of boxes. Primarily, it puts Apple’s iconic square smartwatch onto users’ wrists for a fraction of the price. While it might not have all the tools of its more expensive siblings, this budget-friendly wearable is stocked with everything users will ever need — as long as you’re rocking an iPhone, of course. Find out more in our Apple Watch SE 2 review.
About this Apple Watch SE 2 review: I tested the Apple Watch SE 2 for seven days. It was connected to my iPhone 11 Pro Max throughout the testing period. The Apple Watch SE 2 review unit was purchased by Android Authority.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
Apple’s smartwatch family expanded big time in 2022, launching three new watches in September 2022. Alongside the traditional Apple Watch Series 8, the company also introduced the rugged, super-premium Apple Watch Ultra and an updated, second-generation Apple Watch SE. The cheapest of these — the new Apple Watch SE (2022), which we’re calling the Watch SE 2 here for convenience — brings a number of improvements to Apple’s budget-conscious line while simultaneously setting a lower price than its predecessor in the US.
As always, the SE lineup represents a simplified version of Apple’s flagship watch. Stripped of costly sensors, it doesn’t record advanced health metrics such as electrocardiogram (ECG) or SpO2 measurements. It also doesn’t pack Apple’s new temperature sensor for advanced menstrual cycle tracking. Nor does it have the Watch Series 8’s IP6X dust resistance rating. Finally, it doesn’t feature the latest, oversized display or offer an always-on mode.
However, the Watch SE 2 is the best value Apple Watch available with plenty on board for the average user. It builds on the reliable device we applauded back in 2020, adding a faster processor, low-power mode, and a slightly redesigned aesthetic. It also supports watchOS 9 and consequently boasts Apple’s highly reliable activity tracking, new safety features, and deeper and more insightful sleep tracking. As with every other Apple Watch, though, it is not compatible with Android phones.
The Apple Watch SE 2 is available now from Apple and other major retailers. The series includes 40mm and 44mm case sizes, each of which is available in three colors: Midnight, Starlight, and Silver. Case builds are limited to aluminum but can be paired with bands in a variety of materials including silicone, nylon, and braided yarn. The base, Wi-Fi-only Apple Watch SE 2 model starts at just $249. Springing for the LTE model adds $50 for a starting price of $299, a great deal when you consider that adding cellular capabilities to the Apple Watch Series 8 requires a $100 surcharge.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
The new Apple Watch SE 2’s biggest selling point is its name and pedigree. Apple consistently makes stellar smartwatches. While shoppers may see a budget-friendly price tag, the Watch SE 2 hardly feels like a cheap or compromised device. Instead, the Watch SE 2 offers all the core components of an Apple wearable including seamless integration with iOS devices, dedicated and accurate fitness tracking, and unmatched app support.
The Watch SE 2 offers the core Apple Watch experience, including apps and integration, on the same speedy processor as the Series 8.
In this year’s model, all of these features run smoother than ever on the device’s new S8 dual-core processor. Though it launched alongside the Apple Watch 6, the original SE harbored an older S5 chip. The Watch SE 2’s leap to an S8 system-in-package (SiP) is significant; Apple estimates a resulting 20% faster product. For users, that equals a snappier performance, which you’ll definitely notice based on my testing.
Apps load quickly and menus scroll smoothly. Daily functions feel nearly identical to that of my regular fit, the Apple Watch Series 7. I was able to seamlessly swap between losing a game of chess, silencing move alerts, and paying for the day’s third coffee, all while keeping up with an overactive group chat of college girlfriends. Add in breaking news updates and a Harry Potter audiobook and what else do you really need on your wrist? This is a powerful smartwatch built for heavy usage.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
On the hardware side, Apple also upgraded the design of the SE’s watch case with a new color-matched, composite nylon backing. This material does double duty, refining the look of the wearable while also reducing its carbon footprint. It’s a subtle change that you only really see when the watch is off your wrist, but hey, the environment appreciates it. It also weighs ever so slightly less. It doesn’t overheat and played nice with my skin through sweat and sleep.
While the device is flipped over, users will also notice a different sensor package than that of the Series 8. The Apple Watch SE 2 doesn’t offer the same advanced health measurements as the high-end model. However, it does offer heart rate tracking that is every bit as accurate, as well as high, low, and irregular heart rate notifications. These measurements were reliable at rest as well as throughout a number of workouts.
The graph above shows heart rate data recorded by the Apple Watch SE 2 as well as the Apple Watch Series 7. The data is nearly identical between the two devices despite their significant price difference. In fact, there are a few instances when the SE 2 seems to outperform the Series 7, which occasionally shows single-point anomalies. More importantly, the SE 2 doesn’t just perform well compared to other Apple Watches. I was also very happy to see the SE 2 consistently align with my Polar H10 chest strap.
Likewise, the SE 2 features notably accurate built-in GPS. I took the Apple Watch SE 2 on a number of runs, and once again, Apple contends with dedicated GPS devices. My watch recorded accurate routes as well as total distances. For example, I also compared GPS data for the same 30-minute run mentioned above. Here again, the Apple Watch SE 2 and Apple Watch Series 7 routes largely mirrored each other.
I also simply had more fun with added workout views and on-screen metrics. The new heart rate-focused view allows you to see what heart rate zone you are in throughout your workout. This feature officially validated that the hill I loathe isn’t just a struggle in my head. The activity rings view, meanwhile, offers instant gratification for anyone who wants to see their rings fill up in real-time. watchOS 9 brought a number of new tools to Apple’s wearables. When paired with accurate sensors like those of the SE 2, there is no doubt that this is an effective fitness companion.
In fact, in the health and fitness arena, many of the Apple Watch SE 2’s most significant upgrades are found within the software experience. Since these are not unique to the SE 2 and will in fact roll back to the original model as well, I won’t dig into them too much here — check out our deep dive for all the details. Highlights include AFib History, Medication Reminder, multi-sport mode, and much deeper workout analysis including training and recovery tools. watchOS 9 also brought improvements to sleep tracking (which I will talk more about below) and four fresh watch faces: Astronomy, Lunar, Metropolitan, and Playtime.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
Apple’s battery life claim for this model is the same old 18-hour timeframe, which is a disappointment to be sure. But instead of lamenting over why Apple can’t compete in the power arena, I will say the watch consistently outlasted its promised lifespan. In regular mode, my Apple Watch SE 2 review device lasted about 24 hours before needing to charge up. In Low Power Mode the battery lasted more than 40 hours.
To conserve battery life, the new Low Power Mode disables background activity such as resting heart rate measurements and irregular heart rate notifications. However, if you perform a workout in this mode, (which I did during testing), it will still provide heart rate data as well as GPS tracking. In fact, I found the day-to-day user experience virtually unchanged when in low power mode. The device still offered every feature I needed and tracked all the data I wanted to see. I charged my watch beginning at 9 PM, turned on low power mode, and climbed into bed. Two days later I charged it again while eating a late lunch.
The Apple Watch SE 2 prompts users to switch to Low Power Mode when their battery reaches 10%. It also adds a yellow icon to your watch face to indicate the mode is enabled. You can set this power-saving feature up by tapping your current battery percentage in the control center menu.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
The enhancements to Low Power Mode are especially convenient considering Apple has finally stepped up its sleep tracking to keep a closer count of users’ Zs. The new SE 2 launched with more advanced sleep tracking than the previous generation, with watchOS9 finally bringing sleep stages to the Apple ecosystem. This is a major step for the company as limitations in sleep tracking have been a consistent pain point. Apple’s tracking is reliable and detailed, with at-a-glance stats available on the wrist and further details available on your paired iPhone in the Health app.
That isn’t to say there isn’t room to improve. Apple still doesn’t offer sleep coaching or actionable advice like other brands. Fitbit’s Sleep Profile, for example, provides much deeper insights and guidance. Garmin’s sleep platform also offers sleep scores and data analysis. Apple remains somewhat simplistic, but the data it does provide is at least accurate.
I can also appreciate the seamless integration with the iPhone’s Focus settings. I live in a region where the time is several hours behind many long-distance family members. As such, I depend on do not disturb modes more than most. I am also deeply committed to remaining in bed once I tuck in and being able to easily set Sleep Focus mode on my phone with a few taps from my watch was glorious every time.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
Apple also proves it values customers’ safety with the addition of Crash Detection on the Apple Watch SE 2. Utilizing the device’s new high-g accelerometer, along with other sensors, the watch can detect if a user has been in a car accident. It will even contact emergency services. Fortunately, I didn’t have to put this feature to the test during my review period. However, it’s comforting to see Apple include this on its budget lineup rather than pare back where safety is concerned. Though you will need your iPhone nearby to use Emergency SOS on an Apple Watch without cellular connectivity.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
Bright, colorful, square, Retina displays define the Apple Watch dynasty. Intricate watch faces pair complications and funky designs to add style and stats to users’ wrists. The Apple Watch SE 2 offers the same 1,000 nits of brightness as its siblings, but not all the time. Despite popular demand, the updated model still forgoes an always-on display. When not in use, the screen is unabashedly blank.
The Apple Watch SE 2 doesn't enjoy the same bump in display size as the Series 7 and Series 8, nor their optional always-on settings.
For anyone committed to a visible watch face, be it for looks or for function, this omission is disappointing. On the other hand, the device’s raise to wake is very responsive. I can’t remember a single time I found myself frustrated or waiting for the screen to appear during my testing. Similarly, I didn’t actively miss the additional real estate users will find on the Series 7 and 8, though it would have been nice for those that want a larger display without paying a premium (especially considering it has relatively large bezels).
The Apple Watch SE 2 echoes the case sizing and display design of the Series 6. It’s available in 40mm and 44mm cases rather than 41mm and 45mm. The screen area is larger than the original Apple Watch SE, but roughly 20% smaller than that of the Series 8 and nearly 27% smaller than that of the Ultra. Perhaps as a result of the smaller size compared to its siblings, there’s also no QWERTY keyboard function for responding to messages and the like. If you have the handwriting of a small child and can’t use the Scribble function, you’ll have to stick with voice input.
Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority
Unfortunately, display space isn’t the only cutback. The major features missing from the Apple Watch SE 2 are advanced health sensors. Like the original SE, the 2022 model skips out on blood oxygen monitoring as well as an ECG. This isn’t altogether surprising as these features help maintain the value difference between Apple’s budget and flagship options, though the lack of an SpO2 sensor stands out when many rivals’ devices at this point — and many that are even cheaper — have one.
Advanced health sensors keep Apple's more expensive models a step above the affordable SE 2.
This year, however, Apple also added temperature sensing to the Apple Watch Series 8. Utilizing two sensors, one on the back of the device and a second under the display, the watch can determine users’ body temperature. This is a powerful tool, with significant implications for female health tracking. While a very long shot, it would have been great to see Apple make this health tool accessible for every budget.

The Apple Watch SE 2 is a strong contender and offers one of the most well-rounded smartwatch experiences available. With the launch of watchOS 9, the company added deeper workout analysis and more extensive sleep tracking, creeping into Fitbit and Garmin’s wheelhouses. These advancements broaden Apple’s reach, and luckily, they’re not just on the company’s most expensive models. The Apple Watch SE 2 offers all the benefits of Apple’s latest software update. It also packs an incredibly accurate GPS tracking system, extensive fitness tracking, and adequate battery life. Plus, with the most extensive third-party app support in wearables, its potential is almost limitless.
With the many new features of watchOS 9, the Apple Watch SE 2 isn't just Apple's most affordable option, it's one of the best entry-level smartwatches you can buy.
That said, the Watch SE 2 isn’t the cream of Apple’s crop. The Apple Watch Series 8 ($399) is still the better smartwatch. However, the more affordable model is perhaps the better pick for most people. Short of advanced health sensors, the Apple Watch SE 2 offers nearly an identical experience at a much better price. Only if you have relevant health concerns, or if detailed cycle tracking is a priority, is the pricier model worth the splurge. Of course, if you’re an adventurer with money to burn, the Apple Watch Ultra ($799) might also be the right fit. The Apple Watch Series 7 ($349) also makes our shortlist if you can find it on sale, but you won’t get a temperature sensor with that option.
If you aren’t an iOS user, none of these will do, of course. For better or worse Apple Watches remain singularly compatible with iPhones. Luckily there are plenty of Apple Watch alternatives to consider. The leading square-shaped device for non-Apple users is the Garmin Venu Sq 2 ($249.99 at Garmin). It offers highly-accurate fitness tracking, an SpO2 sensor, and much better battery life. Grabbing the Music Edition is also well worth the price hike if you can swing it so you can listen to tunes on the go.
For a more comprehensive experience, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 ($279.99 at Samsung) is currently the best Wear OS watch available. It offers useful smartwatch features including the Google Play Store plus a quality build. For the best sleep tracking on a budget smartwatch, Fitbit’s latest smartwatches, the Versa 4 ($229) and Sense 2 ($299) are also worth considering. Fitbit’s ecosystem is an especially good fit for anyone new to tracking who wants to focus on the basics.
Again though, if you are already tied into the Apple ecosystem, it’s tough to argue against the Apple Watch SE 2. It’s affordable, reliable, and powerful. Most importantly, its value is undeniable.
Apple Watch SE (2022)
More affordable • Made from recycled materials • Excellent display
The excellent, affordable SE 2 is up for grabs.
The Watch SE 2 carries the essential features of the Apple Series 8 at a more affordable price. It features the same processor and the Car Crash detector as the more expensive models, and Apple says the battery lasts a decent eighteen hours of use.
The Apple Watch SE has a water resistance rating of 50 meters. It is safe for shallow swimming in a pool or ocean.
Yes, the Apple Watch SE 2 has a speaker.
Yes, the Apple Watch SE 2 can be used to support family members who do not have an iPhone for phone calls, messages, and location sharing.
The Apple Watch SE 2 features Emergency SOS, International emergency calling, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Noise monitoring, and Backtrack.
Unfortunately, all Apple Watches remain compatible with iOS devices only, so the Apple Watch SE 2 will not work with an Android phone.
The Apple Watch SE 2 takes about an hour and a half to charge from 0 to 100%. It does not feature the same fast charging technology as more expensive Apple Watch models, though it’s far from the slowest charging smartwatch you’ll find.
In an average year, Apple holds three to four events. There's usually a spring event in March, the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, a September event that's focused on iPhone and Apple Watch, and sometimes an October event if there are notable iPad or Mac refreshes expected in the fall.
In this guide, we're keeping track of all of the Apple events that are on the horizon and what we're expecting to see at each one, so make sure to check back in regularly. We're expecting multiple events to take place in 2022, including WWDC and the September iPhone event.
Note that the product launch information in this guide is based on rumors and estimates, and real launch timelines could vary.
Apple in March 2022 held a "Peek Performance" event that saw the introduction of the first products of the year.
Apple held its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday, June 6, and introduced new software and hardware products.
Apple introduced iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13 Ventura, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16, the next-generation versions of its software, all of which are available to developers for testing and will be released in the fall.
WWDC also saw the first hardware unveiling we've had in June in several years, with Apple debuting the M2 MacBook Air and the M2 13-inch MacBook Pro.
For more on what to expect from iOS 16, make sure to check out our dedicated roundup.
Apple held an iPhone-centric event on September 7, where it introduced the the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple also debuted the Apple Watch Ultra, the Apple Watch Series 8, a new Apple Watch SE, and the AirPods Pro 2.
Apple often holds a second fall event in October that's focused on Macs and iPads, but it is not clear if it's going to happen this year. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has suggested that we might see announcements via press release as there aren't enough major products to justify an event. It's as of yet unclear whether we'll get an October/November event.
Here's what's coming later this year, either through an event or press releases:
Apple is rumored to be refreshing the iPad Pro in 2022, and the 11-inch model could get the same mini-LED display introduced in the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro. A glass back that would allow for wireless charging is also a possibility, as is a reverse wireless charging feature that would let the iPad Pro charge devices like the AirPods.
Apple is working on a new version of the low-cost iPad, which is expected to include a larger 10.5-inch display, an A14 chip, 5G, and a USB-C port. The iPad could get a redesign with flat edges similar to the iPad mini, but it is expected to continue to feature a Touch ID Home button.
Apple is working on updated versions of the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that will use M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The M2 Max chip will feature a 12-core CPU and a 38-core GPU, and the new machines could launch as soon as late 2022.
Apple is developing a high-end version of the Mac mini, which will feature additional ports and a more powerful Apple silicon chip. It's expected to use M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, and it could have a fresh design. There's no concrete word on when it might be released.
There are several additional new products rumored to be coming in 2022, but we don't know their exact release dates just yet. Here's what's coming:
Apple has held two events in 2022, with the following products announced:
We have a list of all the products that Apple released in 2021, which can be useful for predicting 2022 launch timelines.

With the announcement of Apple’s iPhone 14 lineup last month, it also announced the second generation AirPods Pro 2. Apple mentioned the new model’s improvements to sound quality, upgrades to noise cancellation and passthrough sound, and a bump in the expected battery life of the AirPods Pro. Thanks to a 3C certification, we now know exactly how much more battery capacity you’ll find.
There’s a 15% bump in capacity of the individual AirPods. Each one now has a 49.7 mAh battery compared to the first-gen’s 43.24 mAh. The charging case itself didn’t see a huge bump in capacity. In addition to now supporting MagSafe magnetic charging, the battery saw a slight increase of 4 mAh to 523 mAh in the case.
Source: 3C via MySmartPrice
The second-generation AirPods Pro yields an additional hour and a half of endurance (6 hours) using the with noise cancellation turned on, compared to the first-gen’s 4.5 hours on a single charge. Together with the charging case, the new AirPods Pro is advertised to last 30 hours in total with noise cancellation activated. Along with the larger batteries in the Pods, the H2 chip and skin-detection sensors aid in the new model’s battery efficiency.

Apple revealed the Apple Watch Ultra during its Far Out September event in 2022. It acts as a new product class above the Apple Watch Series 8, with features and design aspects that set it apart.
It was built with harsh environments and extreme activities in mind. Diving into the ocean, climbing the face of a freezing mountain, or hiking through a desert were all shown as expected niche use cases for the rugged watch.
While some rumors speculated Apple would position this device as a pro watch for anyone, it is clear that this watch was developed with a heavily defined audience. While anyone can buy the Apple Watch Ultra and take advantage of the features, most people will never stress-test its limits.
Apple differentiated its extreme Apple Watch with a large titanium case, several new sensors, and a large 49mm display. While it is more expensive and targets a specific audience, it is still a fully functional Apple Watch with all the same health sensors as Apple Watch Series 8.
The Apple Watch Ultra has a titanium enclosure available in only one color — a natural silver tone. The Action Button is international orange, and the Digital Crown has an orange ring.
A raised surface protects the display, with the raised material acting as an antenna band. The 49mm display is protected by sapphire glass that is resistant to impacts and scratches.
The Digital Crown is bigger with large grooves, and the Side Button sticks out from the case. This ensures easy-to-use controls even when wearing gloves.
The watch can withstand a wide range of temperatures from -20 degrees Celsius to 55 degrees Celsius. It also has a deeper dive certification of 100 meters.
It meets the MIL-STD 810H certification standard. Apple tested it against subsections for altitude, high temperature, low temperature, temperature shock, immersion, freeze/thaw, shock, and vibration.
The 49mm watch has a 410p by 502p display covered with sapphire glass for protection. It can get up to 2000 nits of brightness to ensure content is visible in direct sunlight or deep underwater.
Apple introduced the Wayfinder watch face, which can be customized depending on the activity being performed. Turn the Digital Crown to activate night mode when using the Wayfinder watch face.
Night mode turns the elements on the watch face to a bright red color and removes anything that would emit harsh blue light. Red keeps the user's night vision from being impaired, so their eyes don't have to adjust when looking at the Apple Watch or away.
It still has an always-on display that keeps content visible even when the Apple Watch isn't being interacted with.
The Action Button is a user-defined function button across watchOS. For example, press the Action Button to mark a lap or set complete during a workout.
This button can be customized based on the app or the activity being performed. Apps will be able to provide different actions for users to choose from.
Press and hold the action button to activate an 86-decibel siren. It has a unique sound pattern that makes it audible up to 600 feet away.
In addition to all of the sensors already in regular Apple Watches, the Apple Watch Ultra gets a handful of exclusive sensors to aid users in complex environments. It also has dual speakers, an 86-decibel siren, and a three-microphone array.
Apple included a dual-frequency GPS solution that takes advantage of L1 and L5 frequency bands. The basic L1 frequency can easily lose signal in more challenging locations like in a city.
The L5 frequency, however, is a new band used to overcome L1's limitations. Apple built an advanced algorithm to make the dual-frequency GPS bands work together to better locate the user.
When submerged past a certain depth, the Apple Watch will automatically display the water depth, temperature, and length of submersion. It is certified to EN13319, an internationally recognized standard for dive computers and gauges.
An app from Huish will transform the Apple Watch Ultra into a diving computer. It will show needed information like depth levels, tell users when to take safety stops, and much more.
All the health sensors in Apple Watch Series 8 are available in Apple Watch Ultra. It can be used for sleep tracking, workout measurement, and notify users of abnormal heart rates.
The heart rate sensor, blood oxygen sensor, ECG app, and temperature sensor are all used the same way. Apple reiterates that Apple Watch is not an alternative to medical equipment or visiting a doctor. However, it can be used to catch symptoms early.
The temperature sensor is new for the latest generation of Apple Watch. It is primarily used at night to track the user's body temperature and help determine when a person may have ovulated.
The external temperature sensor is also used when diving.
Apple Watch Ultra has a 36-hour battery life during regular use. When performing workouts, however, the battery life usually takes a hit.
Apple added a low-power workout mode that still tracks specific metrics and provides GPS while minimizing battery usage. This feature is key for triathlon runners who spend hours in workout mode.
With low-power mode enabled, users can expect up to 60 hours of battery life. It also supports fast charging with the updated Apple Watch charger.
The Alpine Loop was developed with explorers in mind. It has a titanium g-hook that securely fastens through reinforced top loops. The top loops and band are woven together without stitching.
The Ocean Band is made from a high-performance elastomer, purpose-built for deep sea diving. A titanium buckle secures the band through integrated loops to keep the Apple Watch secure even in high-speed conditions.
Endurance athletes can use the Trail Loop that was built with maximum comfort in mind. It is Apple's thinnest band made from an elastic textile. A small loop can be used for quick adjustments.
The Apple Watch Ultra packs in a bunch of features tailored for athletes and extreme conditions, but it still has room to grow. It has a new, rugged design with a large 49mm display.
This large size may be too big for petite wrists, but it looks better in person than expected. The added Action Button is also easy to press accidentally since muscle memory expects no button to be there.
The display can reach 2,000 nits of brightness, the case is made from titanium, and the screen is protected by sapphire. It can survive a 100M dive or temperatures from -20 C to 55 C.
We found that the Apple Watch Ultra is a good entry-level dive watch for recreational use, but it will need enhancements in future versions for more serious activities.
This rugged watch draws obvious comparisons to competitors like Garmin. While it has a 36-hour battery life, it still isn't close to the week-long battery found in some Garmin watches.
There's a lot to love about Apple's existing Apple Watch model. It has some high ambitions to meet users' aspirations, and in many ways, it delivers.
Customers can order the Apple Watch Ultra for $799. It was released on September 23, 2022.

Searching for a seriously impressive deal on tech? Luckily for you, Amazon’s second Prime Day – officially known as the Prime Early Access Sale – is well underway.
During the shopping bonanza, you can benefit from huge savings on everything from TVs, laptops and smartwatches to the latest phones, tablets and robot vacuums.
Follow live: Read our Amazon Prime Day 2022 liveblog
It’s not just gadgets that are discounted during Prime Day, though. We’ve found head-turning deals on home appliances, household essentials and so much more.
As always, our team of IndyBest experts are on hand to filter through the deal chaff and bring you the bargain wheat.
Whether you’re shopping for a new TV or a pair of headphones, we’re here to spot a good discount on a laptop from a mile off, saving you time and hard-earned pounds.
Sony’s flagship over-ear wireless headphones were released less than six months ago, and they’ve already been discounted in the Early Access Sale. Having earned the top spot in our round-up of the best wireless headphones, we can attest to their quality. They have incredible active noise cancellation, smart features such as quick attention – which lowers the volume when you need to chat – as well as Alexa integration. More importantly, our writer said these headphones sound absolutely divine. “Whether it’s orchestral music, rap, podcasts or your favourite pop tracks, the WH-1000XM5 handle it all with poise and gumption – they never miss a beat”.
In our review of the Beats powerbeats pro, our tech writer dubbed the wireless earphones “the best workout earbuds you can buy” – so it’s probably safe to say they’re a good choice for gym goers. Compatible with both iOS and Android, our tester touted the pair for their “exceptional comfort and fit” and “decent all-round sound quality”. And, alongside an impressive listening time of up-to-nine hours they’re sweat and water resistant and offer adjustable ear hooks with the option to change both track and volume on the bud itself, so you won’t get distracted mid-workout. Right now, they’re on sale now with a sound 41 per cent off.
A slim and comfortable health tracker, the Fitbit inspire 2 can be worn 24/7 to monitor your heart rate around the clock and measure your sleep quality over time. It has automatic activity tracking, meaning you can go running or walking with it and see your progress logged in the Fitbit app. Plus, it has a 10-day battery life. The Fitbit app can also track calorie burn and other health metrics, to bring you insights into your overall fitness.
Samsung makes two main ranges of tablet: the top-end Galaxy tab S-series and the more-affordable Galaxy tab A-series. Launched in 2021, the Galaxy tab A8 is the latest device in the A-series and was already superb value before the Prime Early Access Sale knocked off another £70. It has a bright 10.5in touchscreen display, 32GB of data storage, and is ideal for entertaining kids and grown-ups alike.
Looking to elevate your TV’s audio with a soundbar? Our favourite budget soundbar is currently discounted by 46 per cent in the Prime Day Sale. The Polk Audio react features voice adjust technology, making dialogue clearer and easier to understand when watching your favourite shows. There are also dedicated night, movie and music mode pre-sets for even more refined sound, plus an Amazon Echo plonked in the middle of the device, so you can operate it using voice control via Alexa, too. In our review of the soundbar, our writer said that “the sound you do get is clear, precise and sharp, with no real distortion when there are significantly low or high frequencies blaring out”.
Looking to upgrade your iPhone during the Prime Early Access Sale? Amazon has just discounted the price of Apple’s premium iPhone 13 pro max from last year. While it’s only a modest £80 saving on the 256GB model (the 1TB version has a £150 saving, taking it down to £1,229), it’s more than a miracle for the tech giant, which has a notorious allergy to big-ticket sales events.
The iPhone 13 pro max has a large 6.7in OLED screen, perfect for watching films while you’re on the go, or editing photos and videos. “The swathe of photographic improvements alone is worth upgrading for, made possible by a faster processor and better camera sensors, but there’s plenty more under the hood,” our tester said in our review of the handset. The iPhone’s first 120Hz display is another highlight.
Looking for a new pair of earbuds for working out? Look no further than the Beats fit pro, released less than a year ago. “With active noise cancellation, decent sound and a sweat-proof design, we’ll be leaving our AirPods pros at home and taking the Beats fit pro to the gym instead,” our writer said in their review. “Because they’re aimed at fitness freaks, they fit in the ear a little differently, which can get uncomfortable over long periods of time, but if you find the AirPods slipping out of your ears, then you’ll appreciate the more secure fit.”
Give your smartphone or action camera a serious storage boost with this Samsung microSDXC memory card. Don’t be pit off by the branding, as despite being from Samsung, this discounted memory card can be used by a whole range of devices from other manufacturers, like smartphones, DJI drones and GoPro cameras. It has a whopping 256GB of storage, a speedy transfer rate of up to 120MB per second and comes with an SD card adapter, so it’ll fit the full-size SD slot of your camera or laptop. And at nearly 50 per cent off you’d be mad not to snap up this deal.
Brushing up on your oral care regime? Save a seriously impressive 70 per cent on Oral-B’s smart 6 electric toothbrush this Prime Day. Said to last two weeks with one charge, and touted for being far more effective than a manual brush, this electric option boasts five cleaning modes including for sensitive teeth, gum care and whitening. If you have a tendency to press too hard when you brush too, this model will actually tell you when you’re doing it, and slow down its brush speed, which is pretty nifty.
This Samsung smartwatch bundle includes the Galaxy watch 4 from 2021 and Samsung’s Duo wireless charger, which charges the watch and a smartphone at the same time. At 35 per cent off the regular retail price it’s an amazing deal for Android users and is not to be missed. While the watch in this deal is the smaller 40mm model of Galaxy watch 4, with 4G connectivity, it still comes with all the health and fitness tracking capabilities. When we reviewed this model our writer described it as “the best smartwatch you can buy”, adding that it is “elegantly designed, powerful, and marks a revival of the Android wearable scene”. If pink gold isn’t your colour then fear not, as the same discount is also available in black (£239, Amazon.co.uk).
Take control of your home’s boiler and central heating with the Tado smart thermostat, which lets you set heating schedules based around your family’s daily routine and the weather forecast to ensure you’re never heating an empty house or running the boiler when it’s not needed. Smart features such as open window detection and personalised energy-saving guidance help you to stay on top of your electricity and gas usage, too.
Been thinking about upgrading your headphones game? We’ve got just the ticket. Beats studio3 headphones are coming in hot at £189 today – a reduction of nearly 50 per cent. They’re over-ear but wireless, noise cancelling, and provide you 22 hours of listening time without charging. And they come in pretty much every colour. If you do need to charge them, just 10 minutes will provide you three hours of battery life. Though we haven’t reviewed this particular headset, you know this is a brand you can trust as we’ve given Beats headphones glowing reviews in the past.
As working from home becomes the new normal, your storage needs for work files, alongside your games library, have probably grown dramatically. This trusted plug-and-play hard drive by Western Digital offers a huge 20TB of space with a USB 3.0 interface that’s speedy enough to handle fast data transfers and store even more photos, videos and music. If you’re tired of constantly having to delete your files to make room for new games, documents, and updates, you can bag a bargain on this handy device with 42 per cent off in the Prime Day Sale.
Add some ambient lighting to your home, or wake up to a simulated sunrise on a dark winter’s morning, with this portable smart lamp from Philips hue. Discounted by 29 per cent in the Prime Early Access sale, the go 2.0 can be set to any colour, brightness and temperature via the Hue app, or adjusted with voice commands spoken to Alexa or Google Assistant. The lamp can be plugged in or run off its integrated battery, which lasts for between 2.5 and 18 hours, depending on the colour and brightness level.
Taking the top spot in our review of the best robot vacuums, the iRobot roomba s9+ is a much-loved gadget here at IndyBest. With a whopping saving of £530, if you were in two minds about investing before, the Prime Day sale is the perfect time to take the plunge. Our tester found it “hard to fault”, praising it for being “powerful” and able to clean every floor in their home. For a device that gets “the job done brilliantly”, you can’t go wrong.
Keen to upgrade your home security? For Prime Day, Amazon has sliced the price of this Google nest security camera by a healthy 31 per cent – that’s a saving of more than £50. Offering peace of mind, the gadget alerts the Google Home app when it senses movement, visitors, animals and vehicles, with the option to actually use the camera to speak to visitors. Boasting night vision and HD resolution, the gadget is both weather-resistant and wireless, which means you can set it up wherever you need it, whether that’s inside or out.
If you’re looking to up your fitness game, then you’ll be pleased to know that last year’s Apple Watch series 7 is currently on sale this Prime Day. The Apple Watch series 7 is a subtle but powerful step up from 2020’s already-excellent series 6,” our writer said in their review. “It’s a highly personal device that is easy to use, offers mapping directions on your wrist so you don’t need to hold your phone aloft when walking in a city street at night, measures your heart rate, and calculates how many calories that yoga class burnt.” You can currently save 10 per cent on the fitness tracker.
If you’ve been meaning to invest in a pair of headphones, but don’t want the bulk of an over-ear model, you’ll be pleased to see that Amazon is selling Bose’s quietcomfort earbuds with an eye-catching 45 per cent off. These buds come with three different tip sizes so you can find the right fit for you, while changing the track number, volume and more can be done with a simple tap and swipe on the bud with your finger. If you’re still on the fence, it’s worth noting that these wireless earbuds landed a spot in our review of the best, where our tech writer described their audio as “outstanding: rich, lively and full of detail, they’re arguably the best on test”.
This Oppo smartphone has had its price cut by a massive 56 per cent as part of Amazon’s Prime Early Access sale – that’s a saving of almost £400! The 5G handset has a 6.55in AMOLED display and a rear camera system with four sensors, ranging in size from 2MP, all the way up to 50MP. The selfie camera measures in at a similarly impressive 32MP, while the phone has a generous 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
If you’re hoping to pick up a copy of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet ahead of their release on 18 November, along with the best version of the Switch to date, Amazon is offering a pre-order deal that will save shoppers more than £40 in the Prime Day sale. The Scarlet bundle (£316.95, Amazon.co.uk) and Violet bundle (£316.95, Amazon.co.uk) both include the Amazon exclusive “adventure pack” digital bonus, which grants new Pokémon trainers 10 luxury balls and a soothe bell at the start of the game, so you can make an early start on catching them all. With this deal, you’re essentially paying full price for the console, but then getting the game for just £7 instead of £49.99. Bargain!
Disappointed that Apple didn’t launch a mini-sized iPhone this year? While the iPhone 13 mini isn’t on sale, the iPhone 12 mini is, and Amazon has given it a teeny-tiny price cut for the Prime Early Access sale. It is essentially the same as the iPhone 12, just shrunk down into a smaller form factor with a 5.4in OLED display and Face ID. “It also has the same design, performance, Ceramic Shield, and 5G connectivity just in a much more compact case,” said our writer in their review of the handset. The 64GB iPhone 12 mini has also had a £100 price cut, an ideal choice if you don’t mind having less storage.
Samsung’s flagship folding smartphone range currently has a huge 38 per cent saving, bringing the book-shaped phone/tablet hybrid down to just less than £1,000. While this particular model has seen an upgrade with the fold 4, it still tops our list of the best folding smartphones you can buy right now. Our writer said of the fold 3: “Samsung finally has a folding phone we can recommend to anyone interested in the form factor.”
The Fitbit Versa range is the company’s “mass appeal smartwatch” and it offers almost everything you’d want out of an everyday smartwatch and fitness tracker. While a new Versa 4 has recently launched, it’s the Versa 3 that’s on sale. “Although the Versa 3 definitely has its main focus on the fitness market, there’s also heavy investment in general wellness, through ECG, sleep and blood oxygen saturation sensors,” our writer said in their round-up of the best Fitbit devices. “This is the smartwatch for fitness-focused users that still want a good-looking, contemporary-styled product with enough smart features to help in everyday life.”
If you’re hoping to save almost £200 on a smartwatch designed for the outdoors, Garmin’s fenix 6X Pro has 33 per cent off this Prime Day. Although we haven’t reviewed this exact model, the fenix 6 was awarded “best for innovation” in our round-up of the best Garmin watches.
The fenix 6X range is a leader among Garmin’s outdoor smartwatches – packed with ski maps for 2,000 resorts worldwide, a battery that can last up to 21 days, workout guides, and health and fitness tracking. It also includes other features you would expect from a high-end smartwatch, such as Bluetooth connectivity and NFC for contactless payments.
If you’re in the market for some new cans, the Bose 700 is a tough pair to beat. Sitting high up on our list of best noise cancelling headphones, we were suitably impressed by the pair’s top-of-the-line ANC (active noise cancellation) capabilities and even features which enables your voice to be isolated during phone calls. With a 50 per cent saving, it’s great value for anyone looking to keep the noise down.
Now that the Pixel 7 has officially been announced, there’s a decent saving to be had on Google’s Pixel 6. In our review of the phone, we commended the device for adding a welcome sparkle to a range that was previously mundane, with the search brand taking its place in the Android ecosystem more seriously.
Our writer also said: “Ultimately the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 pro feel like a refresh for the range, and for those looking for a new Android device, these are absolutely models to consider”. And now with 14 per cent off, it’s a great way to save on a still relatively new smartphone, with some free earbuds thrown in for good measure.
If you’re looking to make racing games such as Gran Turismo 7 and F1 22 more immersive, a racing wheel is the most logical step. The G29 from Logitech is currently discounted by 51 per cent, making the prospect of sitting in the driver’s seat more affordable. Designed for PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC gaming titles, the wheel simulates the feeling of driving a real car, with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals. The pedals are customisable, while the 900-degree lock-to-lock rotation enables you to turn the wheel just like a real F1 car.
