Adobe Photoshop's extensible architecture means the program acts as a host for add-ons and filters, third-party plugins that you install on top of the software itself. When your business depends on access to a broad range of effects, or the speed of dedicated plugins that master a production workflow, add and manage these resources to gain the fullest benefit from your Photoshop installation.

  1. Shut down Adobe Photoshop before you install new plugins. The software polls its installed resources when it starts up, so any product you add while it's running can't operate until you restart the host program.

  2. Install your plugin following its manufacturer's directions. Some third-party Photoshop add-ons require you to enter their serial or registration numbers during the installation process, whereas others ask you to authorize their software the first time you attempt to use it. Donationware plugins -- free software that requests a small payment if you use the product -- may display a "nag screen" unless and until you register and pay. Some plugins simply require that you drag and drop their files into your Photoshop installation.

  3. Restart Photoshop and apply your plugin to a working file. Check the manufacturer's documentation to verify whether the software requires an active selection, only works in a specific color mode or can't be applied to a Background layer.

  4. Apply your plugin to a Smart Object so it becomes a nondestructive Smart Filter. You can turn an entire file, a group of layers or an individual layer into a Smart Object. Open the "File" menu and choose "Open as Smart Object" to treat a full document as one Smart Object. Select one or more layers in the Layers panel, open the "Layer" menu, locate its "Smart Object" submenu and choose "Convert to Smart Object" to create a Smart Object from part of the layer content in a file. When you add PDF files or content from Adobe Illustrator, your content automatically becomes a Smart Object. To edit the results of a Smart Filter, double-click its entry in the Layers panel and change its settings.

  5. Access compatible third-party plugins installed under another application or an older version of Photoshop. Open the "Edit" menu on Windows or the "Photoshop" menu on a Mac, locate its "Preferences" submenu and choose "Plug-ins." Activate the "Additional Plug-ins Folder" check box and navigate to the location of your software. Select the folder that contains your plugins and click on the "OK" button -- the "Choose" button on the Mac -- to select it. Avoid selecting the main "Plug-ins" folder from a prior version of Photoshop, however, because this will force your current version to load older duplicates of built-in plugins, which may cause problems in Photoshop itself.

  6. Deactivate a plugin so it doesn't load when you start Photoshop. If you experience problems with the performance or results of a specific plugin, you can disable it until its manufacturer supplies a viable version. Type a tilde -- the "~" character that appears to the left of the numeral 1 on most computer keyboards -- in front of the file name of the plugin, and Photoshop will ignore it when it scans your plugins folder as it starts up.

Beena Idnani, who enjoyed accompanying her civil engineer father to construction sites as a child, knew early on that she wanted to become an architect. Sanjay Wadhwa only realised it when he found himself more enamoured by the buildings on the AIIMS campus (which he visited to give his medical entrance exam) than the idea of becoming a doctor.

The two met at the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) in Delhi and graduated in 1984. Early on in their careers, the couple won several national-level design competitions. Their first commission was to design an energy-efficient office building for MP Urja Nigam in Bhopal.

Eventually, they founded SWBI Architects in 1987 in Bengaluru with additional offices in Gurugram, Hyderabad and Chennai.

The firm’s design philosophy is simple, striking and sustainable. “As a best practice, we like to create inclusive and barrier-free designs for a diverse set of users,” says Idnani.

The firm’s diverse portfolio includes prominent projects such as the Hyatt Andaz in Delhi, Crowne Plaza in Jaipur and a campus project for The Times Of India in Noida.

For Wadhwa, the large Noida campus of MNC Adobe is a particularly memorable project as it is a modern building with all the modern bells and whistles, but “the built expression is highly sustainable”. The firm’s upcoming projects include hospitality projects across the country, Google’s campus in Gurugram, and the Airbus Group headquarters in India.

Wadhwa credits the firm’s success to SPA. “Our education and college ingrained in us a certain ethos of doing professional work in the most honest way, with the highest level of integrity and sincerity,” says Wadhwa.

Idnani believes all stakeholders need to make an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings and provide healthier air quality to the occupants. “Sustainability should be a chief concern, especially given that the structures we design will be around for decades,” says Idnani. “The latest pandemic has also taught us to build in a greater amount of flexibility in our spaces, especially in workplace design, to tackle such future events.”

During a weekend of adobe restoration at the Lafayette Head House and Ute Indian Agency, New Mexico-based adoberos Joanne Keane Lopez and Isaac Logston led on-site demonstrations, flanked by supportive volunteers and renowned regional experts. The workshop was underwritten by both Colorado Preservation Inc. and the State Historic Fund of History Colorado. 

Techniques taught to participants included gathering for, mixing, and the preparation and application of adobe plaster — a mixture of earth, straw, and water — onto walls by hand and with trowels. Workers replaced missing adobe bricks and plastered over worn areas to create a smooth exterior wall, resulting in a finish that will allow the building to last many more years.  

Sandro Cadovas, an adobero from Texas, joined the group restoring one of Colorado's oldest and most endangered places.

“Adobe is one of the oldest tangible traditions that we have in the Southwest of the United States,” said Sandor Cadovas, an adobero from Texas who joined the group restoring this Endangered Place. “It's a tradition that sadly is almost gone. It's vanished. The tradition of adobe is there, the knowledge, but it's dormant. And I do strongly believe that it's up to us, the younger generations of adoberos and adoberas, to maintain the tradition.” 

Rio de la Vista, Director of the Salazar Rio Grande Del Norte Center at Adams State University, said the hands-on approach of Colorado Preservation Inc’s preservation ethos is unique — and appreciated. “One of the things I love about this project is it’s not just creating a museum that’s stuck in time, but creating a living place where people can interact, understand the history, but also hopefully think about what that means for the future,” she said.  

De la Vista, who assisted the site’s Endangered Places application, said there is enormous opportunity in learning firsthand. “How do you care for these places in a real way? How do we not just lose those roots, and become a beautiful place that people don’t understand the history of, or know how it came to be the way it is?”

The good, the bad, the everything. It's important for us to keep that alive. Not until we know that, can we have those conversations and think about who we are,” Duran said. “And then it's the healing and the reconciling and the moving forward.” 

Duran, who was able to mix mud with her feet and help plaster the building, said, “There’s something about working together and helping someone else that really feeds the community and makes it grow.”

“It wasn't so much about putting the plaster on the wall as much as it was the conversations that people had around the mud pit, and while they were side by side, putting the mud on the wall,” Rael said. “I think that's why people love it.” 

“It's very spiritual,” said Cadovas. “And my opinion is that’s because we're working with the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air.” 

“I’m very happy now that this is one of Colorado's Most Endangered Places,” said Dr. Nick Saenz, History Professor at Adams State University. “That means it’s on track to be saved and preserved for years to come.”

The Most Endangered Places program has highlighted 130 sites over the last quarter century. 

“Looking back on it, we’ve had a lot of success,” Grant said in reflection of the List’s 25th anniversary. “Of the 130 listed sites, 54 have been considered saved.” The definition of “saved” depends on the resource in question, and its goals, Grant said. “Over 25 years, we have only lost seven listings,” Grant said. “That’s a pretty good track record, given the challenges each of these projects face.”

Rather than list new Endangered Places in 2022, Colorado Preservation, Inc. focused this year on raising awareness of five existing listed sites featuring voices that have been lost, sidelined, or overlooked within the preservation community, Grant said, including the Dearfield Farming Colony and the Southern Ute Boarding School Campus

A Saving Places on the Road conference will be held in San Luis, Colorado on August 5 and 6 and will feature a tour of several sites presently listed.

The John Pitman Memorial Award is given by the Santa Barbara Conservancy in honor of the late John Pitman, FAIA, founder of the Santa Barbara Conservancy, to citizens who have
displayed exemplary professional dedication in the preservation of historic architecture and environment.

Nicole Hernandez, MFA, Architectural Historian

Hernandez is being recognized for her important contributions to the protection of historic properties in Santa Barbara.

As the architectural historian for the City of Santa Barbara, she has conducted historic resource surveys, worked with public and private property owners on preservation projects, provided valuable support and recommendations to the city’s Historic Landmarks Commission, and worked with community groups on researching local history.

Most recently, she played a crucial role in the preparation of the Santa Barbara African American and Black Historic Context Statement.

Before coming to Santa Barbara in 2012, Hernandez worked as an architectural historian at Historic Denver Inc., and before that, as an architectural historian for the City of New Orleans. She has a master's degree in historic preservation from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

William Mahan, FAIA, Architect

During his years of service on many local design and planning review boards, Mahan has been a tireless voice for preservation and a strong advocate for the highest quality in the design of new buildings.

Over the course of a long and productive career, Mahan served in leadership positions on the Courthouse Legacy Foundation and the city’s Architectural Board of Review, the Planning Commission, the Historic Landmarks Commission and the Single Family Design Board.

He is co-founder of the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara and past president of the American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara Chapter. In addition to his community service, Mahan, now retired, was a principal in several important architectural firms in Santa Barbara, including Mahan Architects, Sharpe Mahan and Sharpe Mahan Lenny. National recognition came in 2019, when Mahan was inducted in the prestigious American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.

Santa Barbara Conservancy

Founded in 1998 by Pitman, the Santa Barbara Conservancy advocates for the recognition, preservation and revitalization of historic, architectural and cultural resources in Santa Barbara County. The Conservancy works to increase public awareness of and participation in local preservation issues. It provides information and education regarding the preservation of sites, structures and neighborhoods throughout Santa Barbara County.

The Santa Barbara Conservancy has published a variety of educational and entertaining publications devoted to the distinctive architectural and urban history of Santa Barbara, including the following titles:
