Killexams : California Repercussions: A group of ‘band kids’ who never put down their instruments

Don Kowall has been playing his baritone saxophone with the California Repercussions since the 80s. Now, his recently graduated niece, Margot Dieu, gets to play her piccolo alongside him.

“It’s been a part of my entire life, and I wasn’t ready to supply it up after college,” said Dieu, 26. “Why supply up something you love?”

The California Repercussions, also known as the “Reapers,” is a street band mainly made up of former “band kids” from various university marching bands in California, including UC Davis, UC Berkeley and Stanford University. The band serves as a Neverland for college musicians who want to keep playing after graduation.

The band performed Saturday at the California State Fair, marking their 21st time at the fair and their second time performing since the pandemic. After the band’s first set, the audience shouted for an encore. They complied and finished their set with the swing song “Sing, Sing, Sing” by Louis Prima.

Doug McHaney conducts the California Repercussions at the California State Fair on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

Although some members are professional musicians by trade, most of them turn to the band as an opportunity to jam out every now and then and relive their college band experiences.

“We have a very strong bond of kinship and friendship with each other,” Kowall, 59, said.

The players sport red and black, oftentimes wearing Hawaiian shirts and white caps, with a repertoire ranging from Glen Miller to Metallica. Many of their songs are accompanied by horn movements, such as swinging clarinets from side to side or riding trombones like horses.

While the band mainly gigs in Northern California, they have also traveled around the world, from Australia to the former Soviet Union, and plans to perform in Greece next year.

They typically perform once or twice a month and rehearse every month, relying mainly on the self-discipline of its members to fine tune the music. The conductor, Doug McHaney, has been directing the band since its conception and flies in from Redding for the monthly rehearsals and gigs.

“It’s been a really fun gig for us. We’re really happy to be back here,” McHaney said of the Cal Expo performance.

How the California Repercussions formed

In 1982, the Cal Aggie Band-uh!, UC Davis’s former marching band, was asked to perform two gigs in one day. It was proposed that the band split up.

“If we’re going to do it, there’s going to be repercussions,” a member cautioned.

The name stuck, and the new band was formed. They ended up playing their first gig at a charity football game up in Reno.

A good portion of the music they play comes from the college band’s collection. The Reapers also continue to arrange and add about 10 to 15 new songs each year. They carry a library of about 250 songs total.

One of Kowall’s favorites to play is an arrangement of “The Story In Your Eyes” by The Moody Blues.

The band has grown from a roster of 24 in the 80s to about 100 members today and fields a group of about 50 to 75 per gig. Despite its large size, several of the songs feature a section of the band or a soloist.

A new generation of ‘band kids’

The members generally range from ages 21 to 70, with some of the younger musicians playing alongside their parents.

The biggest change Kowall has noticed is the involvement of the new generation. He said many of them play better than their parents.

Don Kowall and Margot Dieu come together after their performance with the California Repercussions at the California State Fair on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

Adam Strauss, 24, began playing trombone with the Reapers when he was a senior in high school. His dad was a member of the band and a UC Davis alumnus.

“I spent all these years growing up with the music and with the people, so starting to play with them was only the natural next step,” he said.

Rachel Crane, 25, whose been playing alongside her dad since she was a kid said the new generation calls themselves “The Reproductions.”

The band took a hiatus during the pandemic but have started up again this year. Their first and most accurate gig in two years was at the Fourth of July Parade in Piedmont.

“It’s the desire to just keep playing and spending time with each other that keeps the band going so strong,” Strauss added.

Killexams : Glosten Tapped to Design Scripps' New Hydrogen-hybrid Research Vessel

UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography today announced that naval architecture and marine engineering company Glosten has been selected as the naval architect for the university’s new California coastal research vessel. The new vessel will feature a first-of-its-kind hydrogen-hybrid propulsion system.

Selected after participating in the university's request for proposal process, Glosten will provide the preliminary design, contract design and detailed design for the research vessel to be operated by Scripps Oceanography.

“This vessel will be the first of its kind, and the selection of the naval architect is a major milestone for Scripps,” said Bruce Appelgate, associate director and head of ship operations at Scripps Oceanography. “Fundamentally, our ships have to be reliable and capable in order to support the innovative research our scientists conduct at sea. On top of that, the ship we envision needs to demonstrate that zero-emission power systems work effectively under demanding real-world conditions. It's the job of the naval architect to provide the necessary engineering, design, and integration skills needed for this project to succeed on every level.”

California legislators last summer allocated $35 million toward the design and construction of this vessel, which will serve as a platform for education and research dedicated to understanding the California coast and climate change impacts to the coastal ecosystem.

"I am proud to see Scripps Institution of Oceanography arrive at the critical milestone of selecting a naval architect for this one-of-a-kind hydrogen-hybrid research vessel,” said Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins. “Scripps and California continue to set the global standard for developing innovative solutions to address our most pressing environmental challenges. This vessel will play a critical role in supporting policy decisions to protect our state's precious coastal environment from climate change impacts, while demonstrating hydrogen's critical role in California's carbon-free future."

As a student-centered, research-focused public university, seagoing experiences are a cornerstone of educational programs at UC San Diego. This new vessel will continue the university’s educational mission to train the next generation of scientists, leaders and policymakers. It is envisioned that the vessel will carry up to 45 students and teachers to sea on day trips, improving the university’s capacity for experiential learning at sea. The new vessel will replace research vessel Robert Gordon Sproul, which has served thousands of University of California students in its 42 years of service but is nearing completion of its service life.

“Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s hydrogen-hybrid coastal research vessel is a significant demonstration of California's commitment to fighting climate change, decarbonizing our blue economy, and improving air quality for port-adjacent disadvantaged communities,” said Liane Randolph, chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). “The selection of a naval architect is an important step in bringing this innovative project to reality."

This new vessel will feature an innovative hybrid propulsion system that integrates hydrogen fuel cells alongside a conventional diesel-electric power plant, enabling zero-emission operations, in line with the University of California’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative, which targets carbon neutrality by 2025. The design is scaled so the ship will be able to operate 75% of its missions entirely using a non-fossil fuel—hydrogen—with only pure water and electricity as reaction products. For longer missions, extra power will be provided by clean-running modern diesel generators.

The proposed 125-foot vessel will be equipped with instruments and sensing systems, including acoustic Doppler current profilers, seafloor mapping systems, midwater fishery imaging systems, biological and geological sampling systems, and support for airborne drone operations. These capabilities, along with state-of-the-art laboratories, will enable multidisciplinary research, advancing our understanding of the physical and biological processes active in California’s coastal oceans. This new vessel will be dedicated to California research missions, with the capability to study issues vital to the California economy such as the health of marine fisheries, harmful algal blooms, severe El Niño storms, atmospheric rivers, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, and oxygen depletion zones.

Scripps Oceanography has worked with Glosten previously, initially more than 60 years ago on the design of Research Platform Floating Instrument Platform known as FLIP. Glosten was also involved in the midlife refit of Roger Revelle, a $60 million renovation that advanced the scientific capability and service life of Scripps's largest ship.

The anticipated schedule for design and construction includes one year to complete the basic design. Following U.S. Coast Guard approval of the design, the university will select the shipyard where the design will be constructed. Construction and detail design will likely take an additional three years.

When completed, it will join the fleet of vessels managed by Scripps including the Navy-owned research vessels Sally Ride and Roger Revelle, which conduct global oceanographic research, and the Bob and Betty Beyster, a nearshore scientific workboat. All research vessels are stationed and maintained at the university’s Nimitz Marine Facility in Point Loma.

Killexams : Seegene to pave way for PCR testing at local clinics with EU-approved multiplex test and fully automated PCR solution
default_image

- SEOUL, South Korea, June 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Seegene Inc. (KQ096530), South Korea's leading molecular diagnostics (MDx) company, has obtained EU approval for its Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2/FluA/FluB/RSV Assay that is compatible with the company's fully automated 'AIOS' (All-in-One System). This is expected to help small hospitals, local clinics, and public health centers effectively identify COVID-19, influenza A and B and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Syndromic assay for four respiratory viruses

The Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2/FluA/FluB/RSV Assay can detect six targets associated with the four respiratory viruses. The targets include three distinct COVID-19 genes (S, RdRp, N) to reliably identify positive cases even as new variants emerge. The test also includes two internal controls for proper sampling and testing validation. The product can deliver results within two hours when extraction-free, making it both time and cost-efficient.

'AIOS,' first fully automated high throughput MDx system for syndromic testing

AIOS, which will be released in July, supports "hands-free" PCR workflows – from nucleic acid extraction to PCR setup, gene amplification and results analysis. As AIOS is a fully automated (sample in – result out) system, it can be operated by those without PCR experience. AIOS is also compact in size and has over 30 compatible assays for syndromic testing to boost efficiency and utility, in contrast to conventional automated PCR solutions in the market that are bigger and have fewer applicable assays that detect only one to three specific targets.

AIOS is the world's first fully automated and "assembled" solution that composes independent and detachable instruments required for PCR, unlike other solutions that operate as a single unit. This makes AIOS convenient to use and maintain, while authorization procedures will be easier as existing instruments and assays can be applied. Such features are expected to allow small hospitals, local clinics, and public health centers to integrate AIOS into their workflows for PCR tests, which had been limited before due to lack of instruments or specialists to operate PCR solutions.

Safe return to normalcy with Seegene's 'In-life PCR'

Healthcare specialists have warned of a resurgence of COVID-19 as early as summer – alongside an increase in flu and cold cases – as immunity from COVID-19 vaccines wane and virus-prevention measures are eased. In response to these concerns, Seegene recently launched the 'In-life PCR' initiative to embed PCR tests into our routine by increasing affordability and accessibility. It is aimed at detecting viruses especially among asymptomatic people to help end the COVID-19 outbreak as well as curb widespread transmission to prevent new pandemics. Using the Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2/FluA/FluB/RSV Assay and AIOS, Seegene hopes to establish the foundation for routine testing.

*Syndromic testing refers to the process of simultaneously targeting multiple pathogens that have similar symptoms using a single test.

MARKET NEWS

By Goddy Egene

Dufil Prima Foods Plc has successfully raised N10billion  under its N40 billion Issuance programme. The Series 1 issuance achieved a 100 per cent subscription level with participation from a wide array of domestic (pension fund administrator, fund managers and commercial banks) and foreign investors. The Series 1 bond was issued at a fixed coupon rate of 18.25 per cent for a tenor of five years, with a bullet repayment at the end of the tenor.

According to the company, the bond will be used to refinance existing debt obligations, and finance partial capital expenditure plans.
Dufil said it is very pleased to have taken this additional step in cultivating its relationship with the capital markets focused institutional investor base. This transaction represents Dufil’s debut bond issuance. The company has previously launched several short-term commercial paper (CP) issuances under its N30 billion CP Programme. All the funds raised under the series have matured and been repaid.

The Chief Operating Officer for Dufil, Mr. Madhukar Khetan said: “Dufil as a company operating in the Nigerian market for over two decades is pleased to have taken this additional step in expanding and diversifying its financing options beyond the conventional commercial bank debt market by establishing relationships with non-bank institutional investors in Nigeria. Dufil bond has received participation from both domestic and foreign Investors. In case of domestic investment, a wide range of top notch pension funds, asset managers and banks participated.”

He added that the company also extremely pleased to have had foreign investor participation in the bond issue as this is a testament to the company’s adherence to international best practices and standards, which it employs in all aspects of its business operations.

Also commenting, Executive Director and Head of Debt Capital Markets at Stanbic IBTC Capital, Kobby Bentsi-Enchill, said: “It is immensely rewarding to see more blue chip issuers emerge as frequent issuers of fixed income instruments, such as commercial paper and bonds, in the capital markets. Over the last few years, Stanbic IBTC has tirelessly championed the resurgence of corporate debt issues in various formats, and we are exceptionally pleased to see these efforts yielding results, and more importantly for the opportunity to assist our valued clients, such as Dufil Prima Foods Plc to achieve their financing objectives. Continued innovation in the origination, structuring and issuance of debt securities can only be for the ultimate good and growth of the Nigerian capital markets.”
