Cybersecurity staff are feeling burnout and stressed to the extent that many are considering leaving their jobs. 

According to research by VMware, 47% of cybersecurity incident responders say they've experienced burnout or extreme stress over the past 12 months.  

While that's slightly down compared with 51% the previous year, unsurprisingly the percentage of people who say the stress of working in cybersecurity has made them think about leaving their jobs has slightly increased. 

Of this group, 69% say stress and burnout has resulted in them considering their position, compared with 65% in 2021. 

Cybersecurity can be stressful work; not only do staff need to stay on top of threats posed by cyber criminals, ransomware gangs and even nation-state sponsored hacking campaigns, they also need to ensure their users are equipped with the right tools needed to stay safe – often while working with a restricted cybersecurity budget and a wider team who don't always understand what they do.

On top of that, there's also the challenge of managing security vulnerabilities, particularly when significant new zero-day exploits emerge and get used by hackers – according to the survey, 62% of respondents encountered a zero-day exploit in the last 12 months, compared to 51% during the previous year. 

Meanwhile, two thirds said the number of cyber attacks has increased since Russia's invasion of Ukraine – something which cybersecurity agencies warned was a possibility when the war started.

And all of this is happening while many cybersecurity teams are still dealing with the shift towards hybrid working, which while beneficial for many, also brings additional cybersecurity challenges which criminals will attempt to exploit. 

If these pressures are pushing cybersecurity employees away from their jobs, that could have negative repercussions for everyone because fewer cybersecurity staff means it could make it easier for cyber criminals to breach networks – and remain inside them without being detected.  

In order to help combat burnout, many businesses are implementing strategies designed to help cybersecurity personnel manage the balance between their work life and their home life.  According to 72% of respondents, the most helpful one of these is flexible hours, while investment in further education and access to therapy and coaching are also listed as helpful. 

"Broadly speaking, companies are taking the right steps when it comes to easing burnout among cybersecurity professionals," said Rick McElroy, principal cybersecurity strategist at VMware 

"But solving this issue isn't a simple, one-time fix. Now is the time to really double down on wellness efforts, such as flexible hours, more education, and coaching and therapy," he added.

In an exclusive interaction with Analytics India Magazine, he spoke about his journey in data science, AI and deep learning, while taking us over the challenges, achievements and emerging trends of this domain.

AIM: What attracted you to data science, given that you were into software engineering previously?

Amit: I was into software engineering, precisely in computer vision and image processing domain (C++). In 2012, AlexNet competed in the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge and its success was followed up by dramatic and rapid advancement in CNN architectures. This drew me towards deep learning from feature engineering-based classical statistical learning. My prior background in image processing and information theory, and linear algebra helped me get a faster grip. Similarly, the advent of Word2vec and its reasonable success in capturing semantic similarity drew me towards natural language processing.

Transition to the data science field happened first through classical machine learning, followed by CNNs (computer vision through deep learning), NLP, Speech recognition(ASR), and finally reinforcement learning. 

AIM: What does your role at NVIDIA entail?

Amit: At NVIDIA, I work as a senior enterprise solutions architect – deep learning, statistical learning. My primary responsibilities lie in helping and advising enterprises build end-to-end data science-based solutions, starting from the R&D phase (data processing, model training) to deployment on NVIDIA AI full stack platforms. 

The gamut of enterprises constitutes various verticals like healthcare, surveillance, defense, intelligent video analytics (IVA), smart cities, digital twins, AR/VR +AI/ML, industrial visual inspection, smart manufacturing, smart retail, supply chain logistics, and robotics. Since NVIDIA’s AI platforms are fueled by NVIDIA’s end-to-end data science production grade and free to use AI SDKs and free-to-use models, the total time taken by enterprises to develop and deploy AI solutions gets drastically reduced and enterprises realise a significant gain when it comes to ROIs. 

For my current role, I often visit Analytics India Magazine to gain insights into new developments in AI, data science, and how AI is shaping businesses, societies, and policymaking at large.   

AIM: How important is it for aspirants to start early or develop their portfolio before venturing into data science and AI?

Amit: The most important thing for aspirants is to get the fundamentals right before diving into data science and AI. Having a basic but intuitive understanding of linear algebra, calculus, and information theory helps to get a faster grip. Aspiring data scientists should not ignore fundamental principles of software engineering, in general, because nowadays the market is looking for full-stack data scientists with the capability to build an end-to-end pipeline, rather than just being a data science algorithm expert.

AIM: What were some of the biggest challenges in your career and how did you overcome them? Also tell us about your professional achievements?

Amit: My biggest challenge, which ultimately turned into my biggest achievement, was to start from scratch and build a world-class center of excellence in data science at HP India along with Niranjan Damera Venkata (distinguished technologist/strategist, AI, and machine learning transformation at HP), Madhusoodhana Rao (director at HP) and Shameed Sait (expert architect -AI/ML). 

This challenge was turned into an achievement by going into the start-up mode within HP. Though we were part of a large organisation, we made sure that the center of excellence operates the way a successful startup works by inculcating the culture of mutual respect and healthy competition, attracting and hiring best talents, and providing freedom and flexibility.

AIM:  Everybody wants to be a data scientist. What’s your advice to the youngsters starting out?

Amit: Here is what I think:

  • Get your basics right. If this is done, you are halfway through.
  • Do not be a mere ML library user; understand the algorithm behind it. This will deliver an intuitive understanding of problems and be of immense help in devising a solution.
  • Do NOT ignore the software engineering aspect of it.

AIM: How do you see the data science and AI space evolving over years?
Amit: Data science and AI space, powered by enormous leaps in compute capabilities of GPUs, is only going to flourish in the coming years. It has already seen its wider addition in various segments such as healthcare, smart city, retail, governance, defense, education, auto-mobile, digital twins, omniverse, AI-powered by simulations, robotics, Industry 4.0, etc.

In a 2015 interview, Bill Gates imagined a world where Artificially Intelligent Tutoring Systems (AITS) have transformed learning. He spoke of AI-powered tutors offering a personalized approach for each student. They could work with a kid struggling to wrap his head around algebra while his classmates moved on to something more advanced; they could work with a grandmother determined to learn a new language.

These systems wouldn’t replace teachers. Rather, they’d enhance human teachers’ abilities to tailor lessons to each student without knocking their class schedule off track. Educators would no longer have to “teach to the middle,” as so often happens when the students in a classroom have a range of skill levels and learning abilities. Now all of those students can sit in the same classroom, with the same teacher, and learn at their own pace.

“The real power of artificial intelligence for education is in the way that we can use it to process vast amounts of data about learners, about teachers, about teaching and learning interactions,” said Rose Luckin, a professor of learning-centered design at University College London. “[It can] help teachers understand their students more accurately, more effectively.”

Luckin doesn’t think AI will replace teachers anytime soon. Instead, she said, it will free up teachers’ time to do what they do best: build relationships with students. She’s started experimenting with these systems in real classrooms, using them to teach various subjects. “AI is doing some of the very labor-intensive data collection and analysis that is best done by technology, leaving the teacher to do the human interaction that’s much better done by humans,” she said. “You keep the bit that the humans are particularly good at, and then you try and automate the support within that system.”

That personalized attention could deliver students the added confidence that some need to complete their education. Just look at what happened in a study conducted at City University of New York (CUNY): When associate’s degree students were paired with an experienced advisor who met with them on a regular basis, drop-out rates were cut in half.

Given the costs of having an experienced advisor regularly available to students, it’s not always realistic. But AI could be the experienced advisor, powered by learnings from big data.

One of the organizations Luckin consults for, Third Space Learning, wants to use AI to evaluate how well their tutors teach students. Each tutor is currently evaluated once a week by a human, which requires a lot of human resources—an expensive task.

“You still get the high-quality human-to-human, tutor-to-student interaction, but the evaluation of that interaction will be, in the future, done by an AI. And in addition, the evaluation that’s done automatically will be used to tailor the continuing professional development of that tutor,” Luckin said.

AI can fill the gaps in subject areas in which a teacher doesn’t have a particular expertise or help train teachers when there is a skill shortage in the job market, too.

According to Gates, introducing AI to educational settings will benefit learners of all ages. “For a lot of subjects, as people get older, they are not willing to take that learning risk where they are confused,” Gates said. “The idea that you could talk to a [virtual] advisor that would understand different misconceptions and arbitrary linguistics around it, that’ll certainly come in the next decade.”

The research found an increase in both cyberattack volume and breaches during the past 12 months in the U.S. This has prompted increased investment in cyber defense, with U.S. businesses already using an average of more than nine different cybersecurity tools, the survey found.

Data for the report was compiled in March and April 2020 by an independent research company, Opinion Matters, on behalf of VMware Carbon Black.

Key survey findings from U.S. respondents:

  • 92% said attack volumes have increased in the last 12 months, the survey found.
  • 97% said their business has suffered a security breach in the last 12 months. The average organization said they experienced 2.70 breaches during that time, the survey found.
  • 84% said attacks have become more sophisticated, the survey found.
  • 95% said they plan to increase cyber defense spending in the coming year.
  • OS vulnerabilities are the leading cause of breaches, according to the survey, followed by web application attacks and ransomware.
  • US companies said they are using an average of 9 different security technologies to manage their security program, the survey found.

Common breach causes in U.S.

The most common cause of breaches in the U.S. was OS vulnerabilities (27%). This was jointly followed by web application attacks with 13.5% and ransomware with 13%. Island-hopping was the cause of 5% of breaches.

Rick McElroy, Cyber Security Strategist at VMware Carbon Black, said: “Island-hopping is having an increasing breach impact with 11% of survey respondents citing it as the main cause. In combination with other third-party risks such as third-party apps and the supply chain, it’s clear the extended enterprise is under pressure.”

Complex multi-technology environments

US cybersecurity professionals said they are using an average of more than nine different tools or consoles to manage their cyber defense program, the survey found. This indicates a security environment that has evolved reactively as security tools have been adopted to tackle emerging threats.

Said McElroy: “Siloed, hard-to-manage environments hand the advantage to attackers from the start. Evidence shows that attackers have the upper hand when security is not an intrinsic feature of the environment. As the cyber threat landscape reaches saturation, it is time for rationalization, strategic thinking and clarity over security deployment.”

The latest research was supplemented with a survey on the impact COVID-19 has had on the attack landscape1. According to the supplemental survey of more than 1,000 respondents from the U.S., UK, Singapore and Italy, 88% of U.S. cybersecurity professionals said attack volumes have increased as more employees work from home. 89% said their organizations have experienced cyberattacks linked to COVID-19 malware.

Key findings from the supplemental U.S. COVID-19-focused survey:

  • 89% said they have been targeted by COVID-19-related malware.
  • Inability to institute multifactor authentication (MFA) was reported as the biggest security threat to businesses during COVID-19, the survey found.
  • 83% reported gaps in disaster planning around communications with external parties including customers, prospects, and partners.

Said McElroy: “The global situation with COVID-19 has put the spotlight on business resilience and disaster recovery planning. Those organizations that have delayed implementing multi-factor authentication appear to be facing challenges, as 32% of U.S. respondents say the inability to implement MFA is the biggest threat to business resilience they are facing right now.”

U.S. survey respondents were asked whether COVID-19 had exposed gaps in their disaster recovery plans, and to indicate the severity of those gaps. Their responses showed that:

  • 83% of respondents reported gaps in recovery planning, ranging from slight to severe.
  • 83% said they had uncovered gaps in IT operations.
  • 84% said they encountered problems around enabling a remote workforce.
  • 83% said they’ve experienced challenges communicating with employees
  • 83% said they had experienced difficulty communicating with external parties.
  • 63% said the situation uncovered gaps around visibility into cybersecurity threats.

Said McElroy: “These figures indicate that the surveyed CISOs may be facing difficulty in a number of areas when answering the demands placed on them by the COVID-19 situation.”

Risks directly related to COVID-19 have also quickly emerged, the survey found. This includes rises in COVID-19 malware which was seen by 89% of U.S. respondents.

Said McElroy: “The 2020 survey results suggest that security teams must be working in tandem with business leaders to shift the balance of power from attackers to defenders. We must also collaborate with IT teams and work to remove the complexity that’s weighing down the current model. By building security intrinsically into the fabric of the enterprise – across applications, clouds and devices – teams can significantly reduce the attack surface, gain greater visibility into threats, and understand where security vulnerabilities exist.”
