Six months ago, at Oracle Live, Oracle talked about its plans to bridge the sales and marketing gap with the help of AI and automation. During that event, Larry Ellison talked about how the CRM (or sales automation system) needs to evolve, arguing:

The sales automation system has value. It keeps track of your opportunities, keeps track of your contacts. It allows you to communicate with management and say, 'I expect these deals to close in the quarter.' It's really a management tool for individual salespeople and their bosses to make estimates: how many deals will close in the quarter, and figure out what revenues will look like in the quarter.

Now, that has value. But the sales system does not increase sales. It doesn't automate sales. It automates sales, forecasting and improves communication. But what we want to do is actually build systems that help you sell more.

To get to this point, Oracle started by creating a new way for marketing to generate qualified leads to send to Sales with the launch of Oracle Fusion Marketing. I'm not going to dive into the details of Fusion Marketing because Jon did a great job of that himself. But what happens once Sales gets those leads? Something needs to change to help them work with them - that's the concept at the heart of the release of Oracle Fusion Sales.

Removing the manual steps in the B2B process

At an Oracle Live event: The Future of CRM: Engineering Connected Sales Experiences, Rob Tarkoff, Executive VP & General Manager, Oracle Advertising and Customer Experience, talked about the need for a tighter hand-off between Marketing and Sales (and how rare that is today). For that to happen, a transformational approach to managing sellers is needed.

Sales and Marketing to work more closely, and 88% need the tools and technologies to make that happen. It's true that there are plenty of marketing technologies to help Marketing and a growing number of sales technologies to help Sales, but the integrations between the two are not always that ‘integrated’ or indeed useful.

Not only are sellers wary of the leads passed on by Marketing, but they are spending a lot of their time going in and out of different technologies to manage routine processes in addition to the work they need to do to work with prospective customers properly.

Next gen?

Oracle's answer to these challenges is Oracle Fusion Sales, dubbed “the next generation of CRM”.  So what does the next generation of CRM look like? Katrina Gosek, VP, Oracle CX Product Strategy & Marketing, took me through the details.

Gosek said that Fusion Sales shifts the CRM from a system of record to a tool that will help sellers sell more. It does this in a few ways.

First, a new user interface makes it much easier to see what's happening with an opportunity. If you're accustomed to the busy interface of Salesforce, then you might appreciate the simplicity of this one.

The opportunity screen provides a high-level look at all the data around this opportunity, from activity by the account to sales activities, contacts, products purchased, services, billing, and more. The Sales rep can drill down further if they want to see more detailed information in any particular area.

The left-hand side of the screen provides what Gosek calls “guided selling”. These are guided workflows based on best practices and past deals (or built from industry templates). Guided selling is a useful feature for new salespeople coming in to help them learn faster and smarter, but it's also useful for more seasoned salespeople.

As Gosek pointed out, sellers still struggle with a predictable path to success because the models are continually changing, the groups involved are changing, and there's no one right now to move forward. But data can help make the process easier.

Underlying Fusion Sales is data - data from existing deals and opportunities, as well as past deals. Leveraging AI, the application can bring forward the best recommendations that help sellers move the opportunity forward. So, for example, it can recommend the next step in the process, whether that's making a phone call or email, creating a quote, or scheduling a demo.

And then there's the automation that takes the mundane, manual processes away from the seller. For example, Zoom meetings can be launched from within the Fusion application, and all notes, transcripts, and replays are automatically added to the activity for that opportunity. If you make a phone call from within the application, that call and any call notes are added. Let's say you made a note to schedule a demo meeting for a specific date and time. The application guides the seller to schedule the meeting as a next step and automatically fills in as many of the details as possible based on information in the notes.

Another automation feature is the creation of quotes and proposals based on customer data and past deals. Gosek explained that historical deal data related to similar closed deals, similar price points, and the combination of products sold together is used to help automatically generate a proposal or quote that the seller can review and customize.

The AI provides an estimated closed win rate and can suggest changes to increase the potential of closing the deal.

Other features in Oracle Fusion Sales include:

  • Content recommendations - A native integration with the CMS helps surface the right content to share with an opportunity. The seller doesn't have to search for content, instead selecting from content recommended based on the past activity of the opportunity, similar opportunities, and other data.
  • Digital Sales Room - The seller can create a sales room for an opportunity that includes everything from recommended content to the contracts and quotes, meeting transcripts and demo replays, and so on. This information is automatically added to the salesroom; the seller requires no manual work.
  • Advanced Analytics - Oracle Fusion Analytics provides a wealth of data on sales and marketing performance, pulling in data from all parts of the organization, including sales, marketing, and service/support. Gosek said Fusion Analytics enables cross-engagement visibility to revenue leaders and pulls forward insights early enough in the quarter to support adjusting things sooner instead of reacting after the fact.

The overall goal of Fusion Sales is to provide sellers one place to work that can perform many of the manual, mundane tasks and let the sellers focus on the work needed to win new sales. An action bar discretely hides additional functionality (like creating a deal room), so the seller isn’t overwhelmed with the interface. In addition, the tight integration with Fusion Marketing surfaces what Gosek called the 'conversation-ready' opportunities, so sellers spend their time with the best potential prospects.

My take

I've helped salespeople with their processes. I've worked in Salesforce and helped set up different sales technology. It's often a convoluted process, working through multiple tools with little to no integration. Oracle Fusion Sales changes that, and I was pleasantly surprised with the clean, easy-to-understand UI and the guided selling.

The digital sales room didn't surprise me. I recently covered Drift's new Deal Room, and the two are very similar. And there are others too. This sales experience is so late in coming, but at the same it, it's timely. As Gosek said, a lot more selling is happening virtually, and even when we get back to more in-person meetings, that digital experience isn't going away. These deal rooms will become much more popular and widely used, especially when the buying team is large and distributed.

I'm all for AI and automation if it allows us to focus our efforts on the more critical work in marketing and sales. However, I am also keenly aware that for AI to work well, you need the right data. Oracle is pulling together a lot of data from different applications to ensure its AI is providing the best insights and recommendations, but a company needs to have a sufficient amount of customer data to work with for the AI to work well.

“Access” is an increasingly major part of day-to-day life. By the time I sit down at my desk to start the workday, I’ve already gone through a dozen points of access control — including disarming and re-arming my house alarm with a code, unlocking my iPhone with Face ID, opening and starting my car with a key fob, logging onto my laptop with a biometric like fingerprint touch, and joining my first meeting of the day with a secure Microsoft Teams or Zoom link.

Be it physical or digital, access (particularly controlling access) is at its simplest the ability to grant, deny or restrict entry to something. That “something” could be your car, house, bank account, computer, mobile phone, apps, or just about anything else in today’s digital-first world. 

Let’s focus on apps for a moment. They are at the heart of our daily digital lifestyle. The mobile app market is expected to generate over $935 billion in revenue by 2023. Perhaps that’s not surprising given the average person uses around 10 apps per day just on their smartphone.

Today’s enterprises are also heavily reliant on apps to drive their business as well as support it. And think of all the people who may access these business apps from their mobile phones or their home offices. With today’s hybrid work world, not to mention a hybrid-cloud-powered one, managing all these different apps (let alone securing and controlling access to them) has become increasingly complex.

The most serious web vulnerabilities today require a zero-trust model

We’re aware that with all the benefits of digital transformation there are also new risks to consider. But there are serious consequences today for businesses, their employees and their customers as this risk increasingly centers around bad actors targeting user identity and access. If you’re a fan of stats like I am, there are many out there to help drive home the enormity of this issue. For me, two of the more alarming findings are these:

  1. Between 2015-2020, stolen passwords and other credential-related attacks led to more incidents and more total losses — $10B — for businesses than any other threat action (Cyentia Institute IRIS 20/20 Xtreme Information Risk Insights Study). Given the modernization paths for digital fraud are only continuing to proliferate, and the use of credentials in both ransomware and digital fraud is high, the demand for stolen creds won’t slow down in the coming years.
  1. The #1 vulnerability of the 2022 OWASP Top 10: Broken access controls (OWASP Top 10). This includes the violation of least-privileged access to an app or resource.

Attacks targeting a user’s identity impact enterprises across the globe and across industries, though financial, IT and manufacturing are impacted the most. This, paired with the prevalence of broken access controls, make it critical to employ a zero-trust security model.

Never trust, always verify

The zero-trust mantra of “never trust, always verify” addresses today’s hybrid cloud, hybrid work and hybrid access scenarios. Securing access to all apps and resources, eliminating implicit trust, and granting least privileged access are all tenets of a zero-trust model. A key access vulnerability is in the breakdown of this approach. As OWASP describes, it’s the “violation of the principle of least privilege or deny by default, where access should only be granted for particular capabilities, roles, or users, but is available to anyone.”

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges businesses will face when it comes to avoiding this vulnerability is extending a zero-trust app access model across all their applications, specifically their legacy and custom ones. We’ve found some organizations can have anywhere from hundreds to thousands of legacy and custom apps that are critical to their daily business.

Many of these apps (for example, custom applications, long-running apps from vendors like SAP and Oracle, and legacy systems) leverage legacy protocol methods like Kerberos or HTTP headers for authentication. These apps often do not or cannot support modern authentication methods like SAML or OAuth and OIDC. ​And it’s often costly and time-consuming to try and modernize the authentication and authorization for these particular apps.

Many cannot support multifactor authentication (MFA) either, which means users must manage different credentials and various forms of authentication and access for all their different applications. ​​This only perpetuates the cycle for potential credential theft and misuse. There are also additional costs for the business to run, manage and maintain different authentication and authorization platforms. 

How to enable zero-trust access within the hybrid enterprise 

Modern authentication is key to ensuring per-request, context- and identity-based access control in support of a zero-trust model. Bridging the authentication gap is one of the most critical steps an organization can take to avoid the “violation of least privilege” by enabling “never trust, always verify” (per-request, context- and identity-based app access) for their legacy, custom and modern applications.  

Having an access security solution that can serve as an identity aware proxy (IAP) will be key for extending modern auth capabilities like SSO and MFA to every app in the portfolio, including the legacy and custom ones. As mentioned earlier, it’s not feasible for the majority of businesses to modernize all their apps built with legacy or custom authentication methods.

The ability to take advantage of all the innovation happening in the cloud with IDaaS providers plus the improvements that come with OAuth and OIDC frameworks, all without having to modernize apps right away, is a game-changer for the business. It can reduce their risk exposure and enable innovation without disruption. The workforce can remain productive and securely access their apps regardless of what authentication method is used on the backend, no matter where those apps are hosted (or where the user is located). 

Going beyond access for a holistic zero-trust approach

While I’ve been stressing the importance of access in a zero-trust security model, having a truly holistic approach to zero trust requires organizations to go beyond access and identity alone. That’s because zero trust is the epitome of a layered security approach. There are many security technologies that need to be included as part of a zero-trust environment, including:

  • continuous diagnostics and mitigation
  • compliance considerations
  • integration of threat intelligence and risk factors
  • identity management
  • security information and event management

It’s also important to note that adopting a zero-trust approach and delivering a zero-trust architecture is best accomplished through an incremental implementation of zero-trust principles, changes in processes, and technological solutions (across various vendors) to protect data and business functions based off core business scenarios.

This zero-trust approach requires a different perspective and mindset on security, especially when it comes to access. Zero trust should, at best, augment what is already in place to secure and control access in your existing environment.

Businesses will need to protect against advanced threats, including encrypted threats (especially since 90% of today’s traffic is encrypted). It’s also critical to have visibility into the state of apps themselves, including how they’re performing, how secure they are, and the context within which apps are accessed. This also means protecting APIs which serve as the connective tissue between applications and have increasingly become too easily accessible and available entry points for attacks today.

All that said, how do you start to tackle this? There are a few clear steps you and your organization can take to begin your holistic zero-trust journey:

  1. First and foremost, make the choice to adopt a zero-trust approach. Keep in mind you cannot rip-and-replace your current infrastructure. As noted earlier, it’s an incremental process.
  2. Next, inventory the number of apps, both on-premises and in the cloud, your business runs and how often users access them.
  3. Select your trusted vendors to support key phases of your journey. For example, your IDaaS provider, reverse-proxy product, etc.
  4. Finally, decide if you should retire underused apps, replace some apps with SaaS, migrate others to the cloud, and identify which apps you want to modernize. To this point, given it can be a long and costly process to modernize apps, having that identity aware proxy (IAP) solution to bring modern authentication to your legacy and custom apps will be key for supporting a zero-trust model on your terms.

It may seem overwhelming to successfully control access and secure apps in today’s digital-first world. But it doesn’t have to be. If you start by taking simple steps to enable secure, least-privileged access to all your apps, you can then start phasing in a zero-trust model across your entire environment. In doing so, your business will be secured with zero trust faster than you realize.

Killexams : Oracle partners with Microsoft to offer database service for Azure

Oracle and Microsoft are jointly launching a new service, dubbed Oracle Database Service for Azure, that will allow Azure customers direct access to Oracle databases running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).

The new offering, which is based on a three-year-old relationship between the two companies that allowed their common customer enterprises to run workloads across Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud to reduce latency, is a managed service that enables enterprises to provision and manage Oracle databases running on OCI using an Azure-native API and console, said Kris Rice, vice president of software development for Oracle Database.

This means that enterprises can monitor Oracle databases right from within the Azure environment.

"What we did was we took all the metrics and logs that are naturally produced by the servers on the Oracle OCI cloud, and we're cloning them automatically over to the user side to try and provide customers that single pane view over their entire stack," Rice said.

There is no charge for the Oracle Database Service for Microsoft Azure, the Oracle Interconnect for Microsoft Azure, or data transfer when moving data between OCI and Azure, the companies said, adding that enterprises will need to pay for the other Azure or Oracle services they consume, such as Azure Synapse or Oracle Autonomous Database.

Reducing complexity for CIOs, developers

The jointly developed service, which is generally available now, will reduce complexity for developers, CIOs, data scientists and engineers, according to analysts.

"The new service allows enterprises to move applications that are built on Microsoft and Oracle technologies to the cloud with little to no changes by replicating the same technologies they are using on-premises," said Dave McCarthy, research vice president at IDC.

Further, the service helps in reducing the complexity of managing different products from different vendors and aids developers in accelerating app development, said Holger Mueller, principal analyst at Constellation Research.

The age of hyperscaler coopetition

Microsoft and Oracle are typically rivals, but the growing relationship between the two software giants is reflective of where cloud customers are headed, analysts said.

According to IDC's 2021 IaaS View survey of 1,500 cloud customers, 64 per cent of respondents currently have a multi-cloud environment. Of those, 75 per cent have an application in one cloud that regularly interacts with databases located elsewhere (either another cloud or on-premises).

The rise of this trend is due to enterprises adopting a best-of-breed approach to computing architecture, said Dave McCarthy, research vice president at IDC.

"Simply put, each cloud provider has its unique strengths and customers want to mix and match services to get the best outcome. Unfortunately, setting up and managing a multi-cloud environment can be difficult and costly," McCarthy said, adding that these challenges are forcing hyperscalers to cooperate with each other.
