Perhaps best known for its premier database software, the company also offers cloud solutions, servers, engineered systems, storage and more. Over the years, Oracle has developed an extensive certification program. Today, it includes six certification levels that span nine different categories with more than 200 individual credentials. Considering the depth and breadth of this program, and the number of Oracle customers, it’s no surprise that Oracle certifications are highly sought after.

Oracle certification program overview

Oracle’s certification program is divided into these nine primary categories:

Most Oracle certification exams are proctored, cost $245, and contain a mix of scored and unscored multiple-choice questions. Candidates may take proctored exams at Pearson VUE, although some exams are offered at Oracle Testing Centers in certain locations. Oracle Database certifications

Certifications in Oracle’s Database category are geared toward individuals who develop or work with Oracle databases. There are three main categories: Database Application Development, MySQL and Oracle Database.

Note: Oracle Database 12c was redesigned for cloud computing (and is included in both the Cloud and Database certification categories). The current version is Oracle Database 12c R2, which contains additional enhancements for in-memory databases and multitenant architectures. MySQL 5.6 has been optimized for performance and storage, so it can handle bigger data sets.

Whenever a significant version of either database is released, Oracle updates its certifications exams over time. If an exam isn’t available for the latest release, candidates can take a previous version of the exam and then an updated exam when it becomes available. Though MySQL 5.6 certifications and exams are still available for candidates supporting that version, the new MySQL 5.7 certification track may be more appropriate for those just starting on their MySQL certification journeys.

Oracle currently offers the Oracle Database Foundations Certified Junior Associate, Oracle Certified Associate (OCA), Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Oracle Certified Master (OCM), Oracle Certified Expert (OCE) and Specialist paths for Oracle Database 12c. The Oracle Enterprise Manager Certification path offers candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in application, middleware, database and storage management. The Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Certified Implementation Specialist exam (1Z0-457) certifies a candidate’s expertise in physical, virtual and cloud environments, as well as design, installation, implementation, reporting, and support of Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Oracle Database Foundations Certified Junior Associate

The Oracle Database Foundation Certified Junior Associate credential targets those who’ve participated in the Oracle Academy through a college or university program, computer science and database teachers, and individuals studying databases and computer science. As a novice-level credential, the Certified Junior Associate is intended for individuals with limited hands-on experience working on Oracle Database products. To earn this credential, candidates must pass the Oracle Database Foundations (novice-level exam) (1Z0-006).

Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) – Oracle Database 12c Administrator

Oracle Database Certified Implementation Specialist

Oracle also offers three Certified Implementation Specialist credentials: the Oracle Real Application Clusters 12c, Oracle Database Performance and Tuning 2015, and Oracle Database 12c. Specialist credentials target individuals with a background in selling and implementing Oracle solutions. Each of these credentials requires candidates to pass a single exam to earn the designation.

Oracle Industries certifications

Oracle Java and Middleware Certifications

Vodafone is on a quest to pivot from being “just a Telco” to a “TechCo." The strategy includes revamping operations to reduce costs; digitally transforming the customer experience and service development processes; and developing a differentiated value proposition that leverages 5G, IoT, and edge investments and capabilities.

The company recently split the network infrastructure from digital functions with two closely aligned leaders. The reorganization sees Scott Petty step up to the group level to lead digital and IT operations, making him the critical leader in executing the plan to transform Vodafone into a cloud-first, data-driven 'TechCo”.

Before you stop practicing and move on to the following article because you are not in the telecommunications business – let me say that the Vodafone challenge is not unique. I would say that this story applies to any company with discerning customers who have a choice. Please read on if you must continuously evolve customer-facing applications and content to retain customer loyalty.

The front-end and back-end – mind the gap!

We know the front-end is what the users can see while the back-end is the infrastructure that supports it - both need to be in perfect harmony. In the Telco world, the back-end is the “crown jewels," namely the operations support system (OSS), which maintains network operations, and the business support system (BSS), which covers order capture, and customer relationship management (CRM) and billing.

Both front-end and back-end functions are strongly intertwined. When consumer applications change every week, and the back-end is updated every quarter, the "gap" will eventually impact the ability to execute.

As Vodafone built more complex e-commerce applications on the front-end, the need increased for the same cloud capability from the core transactional systems (high-transaction BSS/OSS apps). Vodafone considered several options, including upgrading technology in-situ, building a private cloud platform, or using other third-party clouds.

But, moving transactional systems wholesale to the public cloud is costly and complex, with the risk of performance and latency issues associated with maintaining those systems, which need to remain on-premises for legal or compliance reasons.

Oracle was unique because it offered to build a complete public cloud capability in the Vodafone data centers. Vodafone was able to take a more flexible approach to modernize and migrate the mission-critical systems— the most data-intensive/demanding or too costly/risky to move wholesale to the public cloud.

Way too many databases!

How many databases are too many? Vodafone has fifteen thousand (not a typo) and eight thousand associated applications. Vodafone will be deploying Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer to modernize those thousands of Oracle databases that support its mission-critical transactional OSS and BSS systems—including core functions like order management and CRM. This task could take several years to complete.

Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer is a complete OCI cloud deployed in the data center, providing a secure cloud platform to modernize existing infrastructure while retaining full control of data governance, meeting demanding data residency and security regulations.

Vodafone envisages a world in which half of the applications run in Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud and the other half run on the Oracle Cloud. The mix is likely to change over time. The work to modernize the “crown jewel” applications onto the Oracle Cloud might cause application ecosystems to move from AWS onto Oracle Cloud because it would be a more natural fit.

Pivot from running technology to building new services

Vodafone has embraced Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in a big way, consolidating forty data centers that run core services for its entire European operations (13 countries) into three locations (Ireland, Italy, and Germany) running on OCI.

The Oracle implementation is a critical pillar in the pivot from ‘Telco to TechCo,’ providing the foundation for a common platform across the Vodafone Group. It will allow rationalization and consolidation of the IT estate while leveraging the cloud as a more efficient way of delivering and scaling new communications services.

Vodafone expects to significantly cut costs across operations and accelerate the development and time to market for new services. The Oracle platform will also bring automation to IT operations, enabling more IT staff to focus on the digital experience and the use of data to drive better customer experiences.

Ultimately, the end game is to redirect the IT organization away from building, integrating, and running technology to provide customers with new services and a better digital experience.

As an example, Oracle Autonomous Database is now a feature of OCI. Oracle Autonomous Database is a cloud database that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to automate database tuning, security, backups, updates, and other routine management tasks without human intervention. Database administrators (DBAs) can now focus on more critical tasks, such as data aggregation, modeling, processing, governance strategies, and supporting developers.

One unique, differentiated example is that the Autonomous Database is serverless and elastic. When an application is not running on the Oracle Cloud, there are no CPUs dedicated hence no charges. Additionally, it is instantaneously elastic, increasing or decreasing servers and cores as needed while the database is still running.

Quickly monetizing IoT services

The long-awaited convergence of the network with the cloud, IoT, and MEC will become the foundation for new service offerings. With expertise in IoT, MEC, and 5g, Vodafone is well-positioned to offer new scalable next-generation digital services.

OCI offers integrated applications for Sales, Service, Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing, plus Automated and Secure Generation 2 Infrastructure featuring the Oracle Autonomous Database.

Vodafone is already monetizing IoT services using Oracle Communications Billing and Revenue Management (BRM) which runs on OCI. For example, sensors in connected vehicles can enable services such as GPS map updates or infotainment, charged on a subscription or consumption basis. The solution runs on the high-performance OCI Container Engine for Kubernetes and is automated with OCI Resource Manager and Terraform across multiple Oracle Cloud Regions. Today it is no longer about connecting IoT devices but providing complete solutions for customers.

The 5G wireless broadband expansion promises an exciting future.

For example, virtual reality applications will power high-tech glasses that deliver instructions to workers in complex fields such as airplane maintenance.

As Vodafone takes advantage of 5G, architectural agility will be essential to monetize next-generation services quickly and efficiently. Oracle's Billing and Revenue Management solution is well-positioned to support emerging 5G-enabled use cases with its cloud-native compliant, microservices-based architecture framework.

Wrapping up

Regular readers will know I have become impressed with Oracle's Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and have written several articles. That was not always the case. I was critical of Oracle Cloud V1.0, but Oracle’s Generation 2 Cloud is an entirely new infrastructure developed from the ground up with no resemblance to its predecessor. The design goals were better performance, pricing, and—above all else—security. Oracle Cloud V2 is a significant improvement and more competitive.

As a long-time Oracle observer, I think it is incredible how the story around OCI is starting to resonate with customers. OCI as a single platform offering IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and data as a service (DaaS) capabilities is not that sexy. But, combined with technologies such as Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, and Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing, the result is a platform capable of handling large, data-intensive workloads with better security. For organizations like Vodafone transitioning from on-premises data centers to the cloud, OCI is an ideal solution.

For as long as we’ve had computers, we’ve had to make them work together, even when they’re sold by different providers. I can’t think of any business that has relied on a single technology vendor – or even a single technology stack – for all its needs. It’s also true that companies rarely ditch established-but-still-working technology for totally new systems because of the severe risk, and usually considerable downtime.

That pragmatic model is holding strong in the cloud computing epoch.  So, while a brand new “cloud-native” implementation can in theory be the best option in many instances, many companies running pre-cloud technology want to keep getting value out of older systems while also modernizing them.

Let’s face it: Any technology will live on for as long as it’s useful. Just look at the mainframe. Launched during the WWII era, computing’s “big iron” dominated tech for decades. But in 1991 with the rise of PCs and client-server computing, one respected tech journalist made headlines by predicting that the last mainframe would be unplugged within 5 years. That would be news to the banks and other enterprises that continue depending on mainframes 37 years past that deadline.

Researchers agree that, despite talk of massive cloud adoption, the bulk of IT dollars still flow to on-premises or traditional platforms. But, they also concur that the trend is shifting cloud-wards. 

Spending for on-premises software accounted for 69% of total software investment in 2020, but by 2025, 58% of software spending will be in cloud, predicts IDC.  

So, the move of most IT to cloud looks inevitable but still won’t happen tomorrow even though we are well into the second decade of public cloud adoption. This is why companies need tech partners to meet them where they are and offer a path to the cloud that doesn’t obviate previous IT investments.

Oracle, for example, offers more than 80 adapters for popular third-party software including Salesforce, SAP, Marketo, Microsoft SQL Server, Paypal, ServiceNow, and Workday. Together with another 300 prebuilt integrations, these supported connectors enable customers to easily move data between applications and cloud APIs where it can be used by new web services. Adapters and integrations are available both from Oracle and from a roster of partners on the Oracle Cloud Marketplace.

These adapters allow companies to keep wringing value from data stored and processed in on-prem systems while moving toward a modern digital deployment model. 

In addition, Oracle SOA integration software will move existing on-premises Oracle applications, as is, to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) public cloud. That means businesses can continue running their proven systems until they decide to modernize further. The key point here is this big shift will happen on the customer’s timetable, not some gigantic cloud vendor’s schedule. 

The notion of integration goes beyond linking legacy systems to newer cloud technology. It also requires connecting applications and data, often from different vendors, into a single process. 

Many companies, for example, use customer experience (CX) or customer relationship management software from one vendor but need to funnel leads and sales into an accounting or ERP application from another provider. Pre-built adapters can make that happen in days instead of months.

UK’s busy Heathrow Airport, modernized its operations by moving to Oracle Fusion Cloud and integrating third-party software such as Azure AD directory services, IBM Maximo asset management, and Office 365 SharePoint collaboration software, with help from partners Capgemini and Flexagon.

And, to best serve its fast-growing residential lending businesses, Angel Oak Lending needed to automate manual processes among its various subsidiaries. It accomplished this by integrating data from disparate systems into unified dashboards executives can use to manage the business more effectively. 

Working with partner Knex, OCI Integration services was used to automate a three-way match between its financing facilities, its loan origination system, and bank data housed in Oracle Fusion Cloud. As a result, it was able to slash the time it takes to process loan originations by 63% and speed up new partner onboarding by 4X.

Businesses also need to support the use of toolsets their developers can use not only to build and tweak custom applications but to integrate them to each other. That means supporting a range of programming languages such as Java used by professionals, as well as low-code tools like Oracle Apex, that enable non-technical people to create applications as well. 

IDC, which estimates that 30% of organizations now successfully run their own in-house development, counsels businesses to encourage all employees – not just trained software developers—to create their own productivity-enhancing applications. This is one way to address a growing skills shortage, according to Maureen Fleming, program vice president for IDC’s Intelligent Process Automation research group. 

A combination of easy-to-use low-code tooling and pre-built adapters can go a long way to easing software integration issues.

The benefits of public cloud’s scale, agility, and power are well documented. But a move to the cloud should not require businesses to discard existing and useful technologies that are in many cases what’s paying the bills.  

But no one should be deceived into thinking that cloud transitions need to be instantaneous or all-encompassing. Each business will need to create its own plan, based on what is already in place, what options make the most sense going forward – and what options let it move to the cloud in a way that is least disruptive to its operations.

The age-old problem of making disparate IT systems work together has not gone away with cloud. Fortunately, better tools now exist that allow businesses to pick and choose what they keep, what they switch – and when.

The Department of Veterans Affairs will delay the rollout of its Oracle Cerner-operated electronic health record platform at four medical centers in response to patient safety concerns and questions over system resiliency.

In a statement Tuesday, a VA spokesperson said the system will now be delayed at American Lake and Seattle VA medical centers in March 2023, which make up the VA’s Puget Sound Health Care System. This pushes back implementation by seven months from the previously scheduled August 2022 deployment.

VA will also delay deployment of the platform across the VA’s Portland Health Care System, which consists of VA medical centers in Portland and Portland-Vancouver. The rollout of the EHR platform in both cases has been shifted from November 2022 to April 2023.

The decision to defer implementation a the four sites follows the publication of details about a draft watchdog report that found at least 148 veterans were harmed during the department’s rollout of the system at a health center in Spokane, Washington. Details of the delayed implementation were first reported by Military Times.

In addition, the department has taken the decision to push back the rollout of the system at Idaho’s Boise VA Medical Center until July 23.

The EHR rollout in Boise was previously scheduled for June 25, and according to a Hill source, lawmakers were last Friday informed of the decision to delay this deployment date.

In an emailed statement, a VA spokesperson said the decision to delay further implementation of the platform at these locations was sparked by continued outages and concerns over system resiliency.

“The date was changed to allow Oracle Cerner to put important system enhancements in place and make the necessary improvements to ensure system stability (securing the 99.9% uptime Service Level Agreement currently contracted) as well as fix outstanding issues to address research workflow challenges,” said the emailed statement.

VA has requested also that Oracle Cerner develop an execution plan to put regular system testing and confirmation of resiliency in place.

The department added: “The revised deployment schedule will enable Oracle Cerner to address these potential gaps in system reliability, particularly in the more complex sites that are upcoming, such as Puget Sound and Portland. VA is highly confident that this deployment schedule can be achieved and is doing everything possible to ensure safe and successful deployments.”

The partnership offers a low latency, cross-cloud interconnection between OCI and Azure in 11 regions (Ashburn, Toronto, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, San Jose, Phoenix, Vinhedo, Seoul, Singapore, and Frankfurt), a federated identity for joint customers deploying applications in both clouds, and a collaborative support model. This enables customers to run full-stack applications in a multi-cloud configuration, while maintaining high performance connectivity that doesn't require another architecture.
