Oracle Corp has started to lay off employees in the United States according to various reports. The report also said layoffs in Canada, India and parts of Europe were expected in the coming weeks and months.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the job cuts principally hit staff at Oracle’s advertising and customer experience group, the people said. The group sells services to help clients analyze data about their customers and target advertising to those customers.

Oracle’s job cuts come as the company is putting increased emphasis on cloud healthcare services after recently receiving regulatory approval for its $28.3 billion deal for electronic-medical-records company Cerner Corp. They are hitting a unit that has become less central to the company at a time the digital ad market also is in turmoil.

The company had about 143,000 full-time employees as of May 31, according to its latest annual report.

Menawhile, Bloomberg reported that some workers were told that their positions had been eliminated, according to four people with direct knowledge of the matter. Junior sales employees as well as a division sales director were among those let go, according to one former worker who lost their job and asked not to be named to avoid professional repercussions. Rumors of pending cuts had swirled through the division in exact weeks, but management said the positions were safe, one former employee said.

The customer experience division provides analytics and advertising services. It has long lagged behind the growth of the rest of the Austin, Texas-based software company. During an event last year, Executive Vice President Douglas Kehring said the unit had “historically been probably a little more disappointing than it should have been."

The company “decided to reorganize" the customer experience group “and move on," a former senior manager of sales engineering, whose position was cut, wrote on LinkedIn. In a separate post, another fired manager cited the restructuring for the job reductions. Some marketing positions were also cut, according to LinkedIn posts by a former senior manager and group vice president.

Oracle has reportedly begun cutting jobs within its marketing and customer experience divisions as it looks to reduce its analytics and advertising operations. 

On Monday some employees had already been told their position had been eliminated, according to Bloomberg sources.  

The cuts included junior sales staff and directors of sales divisions, according to the sources, which also suggested that rumours of the pending layoffs had been circulating throughout the business for months. Although this was previously dismissed by management, according to the sources. 

Similarly, the customer experience division, which provides analytics and advertising, is being reorganised with senior sales managers being moved on. Much of this has been reported on LinkedIn by the employees themselves. 

The reasons behind the cuts are thought to be related to the division's poor performance. Its growth has reportedly lagged behind the rest of the company's services and during an event last year, executive VP Douglas Kehring said the unit had "historically been probably a little more disappointing than it should have been."

Senior management believes the cuts will help the company to make a saving of around $1 billion by eliminating thousands of roles. These layoffs will disproportionately impact workers in the US and Europe with more seen in the former. 

Oracle didn't respond to requests for comment, though the reports of the jobs cuts have come amid an economic downturn that is seemingly affecting the whole technology industry. Both Google and Microsoft have confirmed they are either slowing the pace or halting recruitment plans, while smaller tech companies, such as Klarna have had to cut staff

Job cuts at Oracle have also come as the cloud giant looks to boost its capabilities within the health care sector. The firm completed a $28.3 billion purchase of digital medical records provider Cerner, earlier in the year. The acquisition would allow Oracle to enter an industry that's seemingly ripe for digital transformation.

Through the years, I have worked on a series of whimsical paintings inspired by my late mother and her childhood sock monkey. From the beginning, I had an oracle card deck in mind for the body of work and created each piece with a state of being in mind.

I worked on the series for 20 years. Although the sock monkey series was a great way to work through the grief of my mom’s passing, I never worked on the deck. It remained buried on my “Me and My Big Ideas” list. (Yep. I’m a lister, and that’s the real title of the list.)

In early March of 2020, I was selected for a one-woman show at Circle Gallery in Madera. Now there aren’t too many galleries that have the space to accommodate my entire body of Sock monkey work. First, the paintings are large, and second, there are so many of them! Circle Gallery in Madera was the perfect venue. It is spacious, and I love the entire staff there.

The show was hung, invitations were sent out, and the pandemic lockdown happened. The gallery was closed, and there sat my artwork, all alone.

Well, not quite alone. Executive Director Jim Kocher continued to work at the gallery through the pandemic. He said my whimsical sock monkey art lifted his spirits.

After a few months, some restrictions were lifted, and I returned to the gallery and brought my artwork home.

As business began to open, another gallery asked to feature my work. Once again, the show was hung. Unfortunately, the pandemic restrictions were in place soon after, and the gallery was closed.

I took it as a significant course correction from the Universe. I was not in the flow, and something had to change. So, I pulled out my “Me and My Big Ideas List” and immediately homed in on the Sock Monkey Oracle card project. I knew it was time to finish the deck.

I worked on the graphic design for the cards. As I thought about writing the text, a little voice said, “Who am I to write an oracle card deck?”
I heard in my mind’s ear, “It’s not coming from you. It will be channeled.”

Oh.

So, I meditated and asked for help, and the text for the Sock Monkey Oracle tumbled out in just under a month.
