Understanding the Oracle of Omaha

Warren Buffett is one of the richest men in the world. He built his fortune using a simple yet powerful investment strategy. His investments are long-term positions, accomplished by the purchase of fundamentally sound companies that are trading well below their intrinsic value. Some of his most publicized investments include Coca-Cola, Gillette, and Dairy Queen. As of May 5, 2021, the Oracle of Omaha is estimated to have a net worth of over $100 billion.

In 2006, Warren Buffett pledged to give away over 99% of his fortune. Since then, he has donated over $45 billion to charitable causes.

The Oracle of Omaha’s Early Years

Warren Buffett was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1930 to Howard and Leila Buffett. The Oracle of Omaha’s father was a stockbroker, which gave him an early introduction to the stock market. Buffett purchased his first stock at age 11; he bought three shares of Cities Service Preferred for $38 per share and sold them at $40 per share. After he sold the stock, it advanced to $200. Silver has a history of bad breaks over the past half-century.  Below is a series of charts that tell the story…

CHART NO. 1

Silver Prices – 2 Year Historical Chart

An extended, downward slide has taken the silver price down by thirty percent since its peak of close to $30 oz. in August 2020. At its exact low of $18.40, silver’s price has declined by thirty-seven percent over the past two years.

The magnitude of the price decline is amplified in Chart No. 2 when factoring in the effects of inflation. In this case, the decline from silver’s 2020 peak to its exact low amounts to forty-three percent.

The ten-year history above helps bring additional perspective to silver’s break. Since October 2012, silver’s price has declined by forty-six percent. If we go back to the April 2011 peak, the decline measures a whopping sixty-one percent.

SILVER NEARLY ALWAYS IN RECOVERY MODE 

Price action to the upside for silver is always a matter of retracing lost ground. The biggest, most explosive moves to the upside come after huge, multi-year declines, and the up moves never get back to their original highs.

The intraday high for silver in January 1980 was $49.45 oz. It took thirty-one years for silver to find its way back to that price level – almost. It topped out at $48.70 in April 2011.

Then, in August 2020, silver’s price peaked at $29.26. This was followed by a secondary peak the following year in May 2021 at $29.45.

Silver’s exact low of $18.40 oz. is the lowest it has been since May 2020, before those price peaks occurred.

NO NEW HIGHS FOR SILVER

Some final thoughts for silver enthusiasts…

  1. Silver needs to be at $64 oz. right now to match the inflation-adjusted peak from April 2011.
  2. Even if silver were at $64 oz now, it would still need to be triple that number to match the January 1980 peak. 
  3. The inflation-adjusted, 1980 intraday peak for silver is currently $187 oz.
  4.  Silver, at $20 oz., is priced ninety percent below its 1980 peak intraday price.

Expecting new highs in the silver price amounts to wishful thinking. Even ordinary, bullish projections for higher silver prices are unsupported by fundamentals and by historical fact.

Earlier this week, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the Parliament, fending off a debate on rising prices. Giving speculation a breather on the lurking US economic slowdown, the minister declared that there was ‘no question’ of India entering recession or stagflation. In a Rajya Sabha session that ran up to two hours, Sitharaman described the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals as ‘perfect’. Admitting that there was inflationary pressure, Sitharaman said that efforts were being made to contain retail inflation under 7%. 

Sitharaman based her conclusion on a survey by economists at Bloomberg. The report emphasised that most Asian economies would remain sheltered from the impending recession, with the exception of Sri Lanka which is smack in the middle of political turmoil. It raised the expectations of a potential recession for countries like Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Australia and the Philippines. For the Indian economy though, the forecast stood at zero. 

Declining margins, Higher costs

The IT sector as a whole has pushed against the fears of a recession here. Often considered as the bellwether for Indian IT, Infosys gave a strong forecast of 14-16% annual revenue growth in their first quarter. This forecast was even higher than the 13-15% projected previously. Chief Salil Parekh piggybacked the higher forecast on a solid pipeline of deals for the second-half of the year. 

However, there have been small, but definitive signs of a slowdown. The link between Indian IT and the US economy is too deep for one to remain unaffected by the other. Biggest Indian IT firms like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra have a 50% exposure to the US economy with the Indian IT industry generating 40-78% of their revenues in dollars. 

Wipro saw its earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margins fall the hardest since 2018. This was mostly because it spent more on trying to hire and retain employees. Until the June-ended quarter, Wipro had hired over 15,000 new employees, of which, 10,000 were freshers. 

HCL Technologies, which put the brakes on hiring by cutting net hiring by 2,000, saw their lowest EBIT margins in the exact past. Even TCS, which had the highest operating margins of 23.1 percent, dipped 2% from last year’s quarters. Research analyst Nomura declared this “flattish in terms of year-over-year growth”. 

Infosys, too, posted a lower operating margin like its rivals, TCS and Wipro. For the current quarter, it stood at 20 percent which was 3.7 percent less than the previous year and 1.5 percent less than the last quarter. The total value of the deals made by the company in this quarter was USD 1.7 billion, considerably lower than the USD 2.3 billion made in the previous quarter.

A spillover effect

The US job market has become sombre with multiple reports of job cuts starting to pour in. In many instances, a spillover into the Indian market is inevitable. A couple of days ago, The Information reported that Oracle had started firing employees to reduce costs by USD 1 billion. The report also mentioned that layoffs in India, Europe and Canada are to be expected in a few months. 

Pareekh Jain of research firm EIIRTrend said, “Yes, there is a chance that the Indian IT industry might see the impact of the downturn. Enterprises are facing a double whammy. On one hand their costs have risen due to a rise in commodity and energy prices, and on the other hand their demand is declining because of inflation. It might mean a slowdown in discretionary IT spending by some clients. This may also lead to slow decision-making in signing new deals. It will impact new orders.” 

However, Jain added that the empirical effect of this can only be measured in the orders in the second-half of FY 2023 and the decline in revenue by FY 2024.

When asked if traditional IT companies have a higher chance of being cushioned from the recession, Jain explained, “It will depend upon the impact of recession on companies’ clients. Every IT company is likely to get impacted depending upon their exposure to sectors which will be impacted in a high-inflation environment such as non-essential retail, travel, and manufacturing, among others.” 

Jain clarified that in hindsight, the impact of a recession will possibly be seen for a short period, followed by a boom in Indian IT as the value proposition of India for IT talent at scale is intact.  

Slow global funding

Another obvious consequence of a global recession is lesser money being pumped into startups. A report by Tracxn Technologies stated that startup funding in the Indian market had plummeted by a massive 33 percent in the second quarter to USD 6.9 billion from USD 10.3 billion in the first quarter. The steady stream of money coming in from global investors like Sequoia Capital is drying up due to the turbulence in financial markets. Consequently, a decline was seen in the number of startups attaining unicorn status with just four unicorns emerging in the second quarter. 

Lower forecast in hiring

Leading recruiters across the country have rang the warning bells of a slowdown in tech hiring for the upcoming quarters. In a report by The Hindu, Vidya Sagar Gannamani, chairman of recruitment firm Adecco India, stated, “Owing to global macroeconomic factors like geopolitical uncertainty and expected economic slowdown in many markets, we are expecting a slowdown in tech hiring in India in the coming quarters.”

Maybe the storm isn’t as big as the 2008 financial crisis, and neither are India and the US on the same boat this time, but it is likely that the waves would be felt here too.

Teaching

A variety of teaching methods are used, combining lectures from academic staff and professional practitioners with seminars, tutorials, small-group work and computer laboratory sessions. There is strong emphasis on problem-solving and individual aspects of learning, with the expectation that you will engage in independent study, reading and research in support of your coursework.

Teaching consists of two 15-week semesters, after which you will write your dissertation.

Assessment

Assessments vary depending on the modules you choose but may include essays, report writing, oral presentations, in-class tests and group projects.

There is also a dissertation of 10–15,000 words, which provides the opportunity, under one-to-one supervision, to focus in depth on a syllabu of your choice. You may choose to carry out your dissertation with an external organisation, for instance if you are a Professional Enhancement student, your project could be directly related to your own work situation. In the past, students who have carried out such dissertations have welcomed the opportunity to tackle real-life problems.

You’ll need at least a 2:1 in any subject. Relevant work experience is an advantage but we’ll give consideration to candidates without experience.

Professional Enhancement

This is a different route to the main course. It's aimed at those who already have relevant work experience.

To apply for this course you need either:

  • an undergraduate degree in any subject discipline and at least 2 years' relevant work experience.
  • an undergraduate degree in any subject together with an acceptable relevant professional qualification and at least 2 years' relevant work experience.

Course description

Ready yourself for a wide variety of organisational and consultancy roles that demand expertise in information and knowledge management. The emphasis of the programme is on developing your knowledge, skills and experience of design, implementation, management and governance effective information environments. This includes examining their purposes, functions and processes and mediating between information users, resources and systems in both organisational and networked contexts.

You'll also acquire practical experience in the use of new information and communications technologies and develop personal awareness and skills relevant to information management in a variety of workplace roles.

You'll learn basic foundations of information management concerning the systematic acquisition, storage, retrieval, processing and use of data, information and knowledge, in support of decision-making, sense-making and organisational goals.

If you have two or more years' relevant work experience in the information sector and wish to study for a higher degree, you may be interested in our Professional Enhancement programme. The programme is designed for people already in work who want to further their careers and allows greater freedom in module choice in recognition of your existing expertise.

Information and Knowledge Management

This module addresses both the oretical and practical aspects ofmanaging information and knowledge in organisations, enqabling you to engagecritically with a number of current issues and debates in this field. It isdesigned around case studies of well known organisations and involves thedevelopment of skills in analysis and formulation of strategies fororganisational development. Assessed work focuses also on skills in reviewingthe domain and on the development of conceptual models for information andknowledge management.

Information Retrieval: Search Engines and Digital Libraries

Information Retrieval (IR) systems are ubiquitous as searching has become a part of everyday life. For example, we use IR systems when we search the web, look for resources using a library catalogue or search for relevant information within organisational repositories (e.g. intranets). This module provides an introduction to the area of information retrieval and computerised techniques for organising, storing and searching (mainly) textual information items.

Techniques used in IR systems are related to, but distinct from, those used in databases. The emphasis for IR systems is to find documents that contain relevant information and separate these from a potentially vast set of non-relevant documents. The content of the module falls into two main areas: (1)  fundamental concepts of IR (indexing, retrieval, ranking, user interaction and evaluation) and (2) applying IR in specific contexts, bias in information retrieval, and dealing with non-textual and non-English content (multimedia and multilingual IR).

Information Systems in Organisations

This module integrates subjects of organisation, management, and information systems, with an aim to offer the students an integrated set of concepts and tools for understanding information systems in organisations. During this module students will explore basic management and organisational theories and examine the impact of information systems on organisations. This course introduces key concepts which will be explored further in other modules on the information Management and Information Systems programmes.

Information Governance and Ethics

This module explores a) the emergence of information and data as an economic resource; b) the governance challenges and ethical issues arising from organizations' systematic capture, processing, and use of information and data for organizational goals, e.g. value, risk, accountability, ownership, privacy etc; c) governance, ethical, legal and other frameworks relevant to the capture, processing and use of information and data within organizational and networked contexts; and d) technologies and techniques used in the governing and governance of information and data. Case examples from a number of domains, e.g. business, government, health, law, and social media illustrate the subjects investigated.

Research Methods and Dissertation Preparation

This module assists students in the identification of, and preparation of a dissertation proposal. Students will: learn about: on-going research in the School; identify and prepare a dissertation proposal; carry out a preliminary literature search in the area of the dissertation research topic; and be introduced to the use of social research methods and statistics for information management.

Dissertation

This module enables students to carry out an extended piece of work on an Information School approved topic, so that they can explore an area of specialist interest to them in greater depth. Students will be supported through tutorials with a project supervisor, will apply research methods appropriate to their topic, and implement their work-plan to produce an individual project report. Students will already have identified a suitable syllabu and designed a project plan in the pre-requisite unit Research Methods and Dissertation Preparation.

Introduction to Programming

This module introduces students with little or no programming experience to the general purpose programming language Python. Python is popular and easy to learn for developing a wide range of information systems applications. The skills and understandings required to program in Python are valued by organisations and transfer to most other programming languages.

Website Design and Search Engine Optimisation

This module aims to teach the key principles of search engine optimised (SEO) and user-centred website design; including areas of search optimised and accessible design, content strategy, requirements analysis, user experience, and Web standards compliance. Students will have opportunities to apply this knowledge to authentic design problems and develop web authoring skills valued by employers. In particular, students will be introduced to the latest web mark-up languages (currently HTML5 and CSS3) and issues surrounding long-term search ranking, globalisation, internationalisation and localisation - with a business focussed context.

Information Systems Modelling

To consider the role of information modelling within the organisation and provide an appreciation of the rigorous methods that are needed to analyse, design, develop and maintain computer-based information systems. The course is intended to provide an introduction to information modelling techniques. Students gain experience in applying the wide range of systems analysis methods. Students cover subjects including: soft systems analysis; structured systems analysis methodologies; business process modelling; data flow modelling and object-oriented approaches (e.g. RUP/UML).

Information Visualisation for Decision-Making

Organisations are nowadays challenged by the volume, variety, and speed of data collected from systems in internal and external environments. This module will focus on i) theoretical and methodological frameworks for developing visualisations; ii) how visualisations can be used to explore and analyse different types of data; iii) how visualisations can turn data into information that can be used to offer critical insights and to aid in decision-making by managers and others. Its module content includes: how to design visualisations, how to create and critique different visualisations, as well as good practices in information visualisation and dashboard design.

Information Systems Project Management

This module aims to provide a broad understanding of the fundamentals of project management as they apply to the development of Information Systems (IS). The module uses a flexible approach combining face-to-face seminars with web-based learning material. The module will begin with an overview of the principles involved in IS project management; followed by a discussion of IS development methodologies and their different characteristics and specialisms. The rest of the module will discuss the requirements for various project control activities, including estimating development resources, risk management, guidelines for system quality assurance, and various project control techniques that have been developed in exact years. The module will culminate with a review of human resource management issues.

Digital Business

The module addresses both theoretical and practical aspects of digital business. The module will cover the latest business trends and business models adopted by ecommerce companies so that students are able to recognise and relate to the current practice in business.  The module aims to equip the students with theoretical and business knowledge and entrepreneurial skills to understand and manage new ways of doing business in the digital economy.

Researching Social Media

The module will examine the key theoretical frameworks and methods used in social media studies. Students will explore the following questions: 1) What can be learnt about society by studying social media? 2) How should researchers construct ethical stances for researching sites such as Facebook and Twitter? 3) What are the traditional and digital research methods and tools that can be applied to conduct research on social media? 4) What are the strengths and weaknesses of these methods?

ICTs, Innovation and Change

This module aims at examining and exploring how organizations and human activity systems cope with change due to the new implementation or updating of Information Systems and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). This change occurs in complex social environments and has cultural, political, structural and ethical impacts that need to be carefully managed. The module will examine and explore how both managers and Information Systems practitioners can be better prepared for the unpredictability, unintended outcomes and possible harmful consequences of change caused by the introduction or update of Information Systems and ICTs. Therefore, the module aims at providing an understanding of both approaches and techniques for the management of this change.

Database Design

Effective data management is key to any organisation, particularly with the increasing availability of large and heterogeneous datasets (e.g. transactional, multimedia and geo-spatial data). A database is an organised collection of data, typically describing the activities of one or more organisations and a core component of modern information systems. A Database Management System (DBMS) is software designed to assist in maintaining and utilising large collections of data and becoming a necessity for all organisations. This module provides an introduction to the area of databases and database management, relational database design and a flavour of some advanced subjects in current database research that deal with different kinds of data often found within an organisational context. Lectures are structured into three main areas:¿An introduction to databases¿The process of designing relational databases¿Advanced subjects (e.g. data warehouses and non-relational databases)The course includes a series of online tasks with supporting 'drop in¿ laboratories aimed at providing you with the skills required to implement a database in Oracle and extract information using the Structured Query Language (SQL).

Academic and Workplace Library, Information and Knowledge Services

This module introduces students to the purposes, functions and practices of a range of academic research and other specialist library and information/knowledge services in the public and private sectors. It considers the challenges of delivering and developing services in a demanding, fast-moving and complex environment. Lectures are combined with sector-based case studies presented by visiting speakers drawn from diverse backgrounds giving extensive opportunities for interaction with specialist practitioners.

User-Centred Design and Human-Computer Interaction

Interface design and usability are central to the experience of interacting with computers. The module introduces usability principles and the design process for interactive systems exploring four major themes. Firstly, user psychology and cognitive principles underlying interface design. Secondly, user interface architectures, modes of interaction, metaphors, navigational structures. Thirdly, the user interface design process including task analysis, modelling constructs and prototyping techniques. Fourthly, the evaluation of user interfaces covering concepts of usability, goals and types of evaluation. The module focus is on the underlying principles of HCI and user-centred design approach with practical sessions to demonstrate these principles.

Archives and Records Management

This module prepares students for roles within archives and records management, with emphasis on archives.  Students will develop knowledge and awareness of key theories and practices in archives and records management. The module introduces students to some of the principal issues surrounding the provision of archives and records management services and the challenges of meeting user needs within an organisational context. In addition to presenting the fundamental principles the second part of the module focuses on specific subjects of interest, such as: community archiving, digital preservation, web archiving and oral history collecting.

Teaching

A variety of teaching methods are used, combining lectures from academic staff and professional practitioners with seminars, tutorials, small-group work and computer laboratory sessions.

There's a strong emphasis on problem-solving and individual aspects of learning, with the expectation that you’ll engage in independent study, reading and research in support of your coursework.

Teaching consists of two 15-week semesters, after which you’ll write your dissertation.

Assessment

Assessments vary depending on the modules you choose but may include essays, report writing, oral presentations, in-class tests and group projects.

There's also a dissertation of 10–15,000 words, which provides the opportunity, under one-to-one supervision, to focus on a syllabu of your choice. You may choose to carry out your dissertation with an external organisation, for instance if you are a Professional Enhancement student, your project could be directly related to your work situation. In the past, students who have carried out such dissertations have welcomed the opportunity to tackle real-life problems.

This clip from March 2009 illustrates what it's like at a market bottom, that had analysts stating at Dow 6490 that the Dow was nowhere near a bottom which was at least another 20% to 25% further below.

AT THE BOTTOM

The bottom will ALWAYS BE some distance away in terms of price and time, where the rally off the bottom will always be seen as a dead cat bounce to SELL.

Where do we stand today? We'll no one, not even I think today's rally is off THE bottom! But I know enough to know that -

a, AI tech stocks have already deviated greatly from their highs so it's going to be a tough call to expect further new lows in most.

b. That many if not most will likely outperform the indices going forward. Yes a few are still expensive such as Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia and maybe AMD that carry a risk premium for further downwards price action to fair value. And then there is Amazon which whilst expensive IS DOWN 46% which offers a bottom picking cushion of sorts.

c. That bear market bottom will always be seen by virtually all as being further away in terms of time and price.

d. That the rally off the bottom will ALWAYS be seen as a bear market rally to SELL into rather than to BUY the rally as it will be taken as granted that it is just another BEAR MARKET RALLY! Whilst everyone waits for CAPITULATION to happen.

The net result is that MOST will SELL the rally off the bottom rather than buy it, that is human psychology as I covered in my last article, Investors will be relieved that they can finally cut their losses and SELL the RALLY as the dead cat bounce bear market rally mantra will persist for probably well over year AFTER the market bottoms! As most who failed to buy or worse sold are convinced that new lows remain inevitable given dire fundamentals just as was the case during 2009 and into 2010 for which investors will have plenty of media queens to turn to reinforce such views as clueless journalist regurgitate tripe of imbecilic academics all the way to NEW ALL:TIME HIGHS!

"Macro news, earnings news and financial shocks are going to be worse than expected and that's why I believe this is still a bear market rally," he told BNN

So one needs to get into the right mindset for which one needs a PLAN and then to FOLLOW it. My plan was pretty simple, to have a mountain of cash on account Mid Jan, and then to gradually accumulate during the bear market of 2022 as individual stocks trade to new lows with buying levels based on valuations acting as guide posts along the way. For if one bought on the basis of the indices then one would have bought Apple at over $160 instead of below $130 as I warned barely weeks ago given that the stock price was not falling along with the rest of the market early May. That's an example of what happens if one follows the indices as unfortunately many do! Of course in the long-run it won't make much difference if one bought Apple at $160, but it is a much lower draw down risk to buy at below $130 than above $160.
