For the twelfth year in a row, healthcare saw the costliest breaches among all industries with the average cost reaching $10.1 million per breach.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — IBM (NYSE: IBM) Security released the annual Cost of a Data Breach Report, revealing costlier and higher-impact data breaches than ever before, with the global average cost of a data breach reaching an all-time high of $4.35 million for studied organizations. With breach costs increasing nearly 13% over the last two years of the report, the findings suggest these incidents may also be contributing to rising costs of goods and services. In fact, 60% of studied organizations raised their product or services prices due to the breach, when the cost of goods is already soaring worldwide amid inflation and supply chain issues.

The perpetuality of cyberattacks is also shedding light on the “haunting effect” data breaches are having on businesses, with the IBM report finding 83% of studied organizations have experienced more than one data breach in their lifetime. Another factor rising over time is the after-effects of breaches on these organizations, which linger long after they occur, as nearly 50% of breach costs are incurred more than a year after the breach.

The 2022 Cost of a Data Breach Report is based on in-depth analysis of real-world data breaches experienced by 550 organizations globally between March 2021 and March 2022. The research, which was sponsored and analyzed by IBM Security, was conducted by the Ponemon Institute.

Some of the key findings in the 2022 IBM report include:

  • Critical Infrastructure Lags in Zero Trust – Almost 80% of critical infrastructure organizations studied don’t adopt zero trust strategies, seeing average breach costs rise to $5.4 million – a $1.17 million increase compared to those that do. All while 28% of breaches amongst these organizations were ransomware or destructive attacks.
  • It Doesn’t Pay to Pay – Ransomware victims in the study that opted to pay threat actors’ ransom demands saw only $610,000 less in average breach costs compared to those that chose not to pay – not including the cost of the ransom. Factoring in the high cost of ransom payments, the financial toll may rise even higher, suggesting that simply paying the ransom may not be an effective strategy.
  • Security Immaturity in Clouds – Forty-three percent of studied organizations are in the early stages or have not started applying security practices across their cloud environments, observing over $660,000 on average in higher breach costs than studied organizations with mature security across their cloud environments.
  • Security AI and Automation Leads as Multi-Million Dollar Cost Saver – Participating organizations fully deploying security AI and automation incurred $3.05 million less on average in breach costs compared to studied organizations that have not deployed the technology – the biggest cost saver observed in the study.

“Businesses need to put their security defenses on the offense and beat attackers to the punch. It’s time to stop the adversary from achieving their objectives and start to minimize the impact of attacks. The more businesses try to perfect their perimeter instead of investing in detection and response, the more breaches can fuel cost of living increases.” said Charles Henderson, Global Head of IBM Security X-Force. “This report shows that the right strategies coupled with the right technologies can help make all the difference when businesses are attacked.”

Over-trusting Critical Infrastructure Organizations

Concerns over critical infrastructure targeting appear to be increasing globally over the past year, with many governments’ cybersecurity agencies urging vigilance against disruptive attacks. In fact, IBM’s report reveals that ransomware and destructive attacks represented 28% of breaches amongst critical infrastructure organizations studied, highlighting how threat actors are seeking to fracture the global supply chains that rely on these organizations. This includes financial services, industrial, transportation and healthcare companies amongst others.

Despite the call for caution, and a year after the Biden Administration issued a cybersecurity executive order that centers around the importance of adopting a zero trust approach to strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity, only 21% of critical infrastructure organizations studied adopt a zero trust security model, according to the report. Add to that, 17% of breaches at critical infrastructure organizations were caused due to a business partner being initially compromised, highlighting the security risks that over-trusting environments pose.

Businesses that Pay the Ransom Aren’t Getting a “Bargain”

According to the 2022 IBM report, businesses that paid threat actors’ ransom demands saw $610,000 less in average breach costs compared to those that chose not to pay – not including the ransom amount paid. However, when accounting for the average ransom payment, which according to Sophos reached $812,000 in 2021, businesses that opt to pay the ransom could net higher total costs – all while inadvertently funding future ransomware attacks with capital that could be allocated to remediation and recovery efforts and looking at potential federal offenses.

The persistence of ransomware, despite significant global efforts to impede it, is fueled by the industrialization of cybercrime. IBM Security X-Force discovered the duration of studied enterprise ransomware attacks shows a drop of 94% over the past three years – from over two months to just under four days. These exponentially shorter attack lifecycles can prompt higher impact attacks, as cybersecurity incident responders are left with very short windows of opportunity to detect and contain attacks. With “time to ransom” dropping to a matter of hours, it’s essential that businesses prioritize rigorous testing of incident response (IR) playbooks ahead of time. But the report states that as many as 37% of organizations studied that have incident response plans don’t test them regularly.

Hybrid Cloud Advantage

The report also showcased hybrid cloud environments as the most prevalent (45%) infrastructure amongst organizations studied. Averaging $3.8 million in breach costs, businesses that adopted a hybrid cloud model observed lower breach costs compared to businesses with a solely public or private cloud model, which experienced $5.02 million and $4.24 million on average respectively. In fact, hybrid cloud adopters studied were able to identify and contain data breaches 15 days faster on average than the global average of 277 days for participants.

The report highlights that 45% of studied breaches occurred in the cloud, emphasizing the importance of cloud security. However, a significant 43% of reporting organizations stated they are just in the early stages or have not started implementing security practices to protect their cloud environments, observing higher breach costs2. Businesses studied that did not implement security practices across their cloud environments required an average 108 more days to identify and contain a data breach than those consistently applying security practices across all their domains.

Additional findings in the 2022 IBM report include:

  • Phishing Becomes Costliest Breach Cause – While compromised credentials continued to reign as the most common cause of a breach (19%), phishing was the second (16%) and the costliest cause, leading to $4.91 million in average breach costs for responding organizations.
  • Healthcare Breach Costs Hit Double Digits for First Time Ever– For the 12th year in a row, healthcare participants saw the costliest breaches amongst industries with average breach costs in healthcare increasing by nearly $1 million to reach a record high of $10.1 million.
  • Insufficient Security Staffing – Sixty-two percent of studied organizations stated they are not sufficiently staffed to meet their security needs, averaging $550,000 more in breach costs than those that state they are sufficiently staffed.

"The new lab facility will be a valuable resource for worldwide universities and enterprise companies wanting to take advantage of IBM Enterprise Servers POWER9 and POWER10 combined with IBM Spectrum storage, along with AIX and RHEL with OpenShift," said Ganesan Narayanasamy, IBM's leader for academic and research worldwide.

Narayanasamy said the new center extends state-of-the-art facilities and other Silicon Valley-style services to researchers, system developers, and other users looking to take advantage of open-source high-performance computing resources.  The center has already helped thousands of students gain exposure and practice with its high-performance computing training, and it is expected to serve as a global hub that will help prepare the next generation of computer scientists, according to the center's director Sameer Shende.

"We aim to expand the skillset of researchers and students in the area of commercial application of artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as high-performance computing technologies," Shende said.

Thanks to a long-term loan agreement with IBM, the center has access to powerful enterprise servers and other capabilities. It was envisioned to bring together data scientists from businesses in different domains, such as financial services, manufacturing, and transportation, along with IBM research and development engineers, IBM partner data scientists, and university students and researchers.

The new center also has the potential to be leveraged by everyone from global transportation companies seeking to design more efficient trucking routes to clean energy firms looking to design better wind turbines based on models of airflow patterns. At the University of Oregon, there are potential applications in data science, machine learning, environmental hazards monitoring, and other emerging areas of research and innovation.

"Enterprise AI is a team sport," said Raj Krishnamurthy, an IBM chief architect for enterprise AI and co-director of the new center. "As businesses continue to operationalize AI in mission-critical systems, the use cases and methodologies developed from collaboration in this center will further promote the adoption of trusted AI techniques in the enterprise."

Ultimately, the center will contribute to the University of Oregon's overall research excellence, said AR Razdan, who serves as the university's vice president for research and innovation.

"The center marks another great step forward in [the university's] ongoing efforts to bring together interdisciplinary teams of researchers and innovators," Razdan said.

Earlier this year, IBM launched a study that revealed the size of the AI skills gap across Europe that found the tech sector is struggling to find employees with adequate AI knowledge or experience. The research found nearly 7 in 10 tech job seekers and tech employees believe that potential recruits lack the skills necessary for a career in AI. The impact of this deficit has the potential to stifle digital innovation and hold back economic growth.

Mind the gap

The IBM report, ‘Addressing the AI Skills Gap in Europe’, exposed a worrying shortfall in skills required for a career in AI. Although technical capabilities are vital for a career in the sector, problem solving is considered the most critical soft skill needed for tech roles among all survey participants (up to 37%). However, around a quarter of tech recruiters (23%) have difficulty finding applicants with this aptitude along with shortfalls in critical and strategic thinking. Along with soft skills, 40% of tech job seekers and employees noted that software engineering and knowledge of programming languages are the most important technical capabilities for the AI/tech workforce to have. 

How to address the issue

As AI moves into the mainstream, specialist tech staff are working more closely than ever with business managers. In order to secure the best possible outcomes, the soft skills of interpersonal communication, strategic problem solving, and critical thinking are required across all disciplines to help ensure the most beneficial personal interactions. A great deal remains to be done to solve this skills gap. However, I believe we can agree that a solution is achievable. What’s required now is for industry, government and academia to work together to put existing ideas into practice and to think of new ways to solve the challenge. At the start of the year, the DCMS announced £23 million of government funding to create 2,000 scholarships in AI and data science in England. The new scholarships from this funding will ensure more people can build successful careers in AI, create and develop new and bigger businesses, and will Boost the diversity of this growing and innovative sector.  I hope to see further investment and programs such as ours with SkillsBuild as key drivers in change. Matt Hicks, Red Hat's new CEO, doesn't have the background of your typical chief executive. 

He studied computer hardware engineering in college. 

He began his career as an IT consultant at IBM. 

And instead of jumping into management at Red Hat, Hicks started at the open-source software business in 2006 as a developer on the IT team.

His on-the-ground experience, however, is one of his core assets as the company's new leader, Hicks says. 

"The markets are changing really quickly," he tells ZDNet. "And just having that intuition -- of where hardware is going, having spent time in the field with what enterprise IT shops struggle with and what they do well, and then having a lot of years in Red Hat engineering -- I know that's intuition that I'll lean on... Around that, there's a really good team at Red Hat, and I get to lean on their expertise of how to best deliver, but that I love having that core intuition."

Hicks believes his core knowledge helps him to guide the company's strategic bets.

While his experience is an asset, Hicks says it's not a given that a good developer will make a good leader. You also need to know how to communicate your ideas persuasively.

"You can't just be the best coder in the room," he says.

"Especially in STEM and engineering, the softer skills of learning how to present, learning how to influence a group and show up really well in a leadership presentation or at a conference -- they really start to define people's careers." 

Red Hat CEO Matt Hicks has big plans for the future of his company.

Hicks says that focus on influence is an important part of his role now that he didn't relish earlier in his career. 

"I think a lot of people don't love that," he says.

"And yet, you can be the best engineer on the planet and work hard, but if you can't be heard, if you can't influence, it's harder to deliver on those opportunities."

Hicks embraced the art of persuasion to advance his career. And as an open-source developer, he learned to embrace enterprise products to advance Red Hat's mission.

He joined Red Hat just a few years after Paul Cormier -- then Red Hat's VP of engineering, and later Hicks' predecessor as CEO -- moved the company from its early distribution, Red Hat Linux, to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It was a move that not everyone liked. 

"There was a significant amount of angst," Hicks says, with developers questioning whether it was the right business model for open source. "People are passionate about creating sustaining models. So I think at the time [the question] was, is Red Hat departing from that, or will this continue to make open source better?" 

Hicks had an understanding of both sides of that debate.

"I really started my whole journey with technology with Linux itself," he says. "I was on the consumer side -- you know, I bought the boxes of Linux from Best Buy. But my first professional job was actually in consulting with IBM at the time. And as much as I knew about Linux, there's a difference when you're a consultant at an enterprise and you're deploying Linux next to [IBM's Unix-based operating system] AIX.

"I had my consumer view -- I loved this open source thing," he says. "But I also had that practitioner view of, I'm going into large enterprises, and I'm only going to be here on a consulting gig and this has to have credibility. And RHEL really delivered to that well."

Hicks says he was drawn to Red Hat because of the inherent tension between community and commerce.

"There's the pull to either side, of how do you enable a community where the software is accessible to anyone on the planet, your partners and your competitors on it?" he says, versus the question of, "How do you harness that innovation, to have a really successful commercial model that customers value?"

In all the years he's been at Red Hat, Hicks doesn't think much has changed around the challenge of balancing those two forces.

Of course, plenty of other stuff has changed, both in the profession of software development and at Red Hat. Hicks wants to ensure that the company is always ready to evolve -- that's why in a message to Red Hat's workforce, he wrote: "When we hire, look for culture add, not culture fit."

He believes the idea of searching for a culture fit among prospective employees has a very static feel to it. 

"It's not you're not adding anything, you're not looking at potential," he says. "If you're always staying with what you know, the culture you have today, fitting your current constraints, I think you're going to lose out on a lot of that potential, both the potential for today and then as that talent evolves and changes tomorrow."

Red Hat was acquired by IBM in 2019 for $34 billion, but the company continues to operate as a standalone division. Meanwhile, RHEL is still the industry's leading enterprise Linux platform. As Steven Vaughan-Nichols noted for ZDNet, it's used by more than 90% of Fortune 500 organizations and touches $13 trillion in global business revenues in 2022.

"Pretty much any industry you look at is starting to define their innovation with software at this point, and we're in the software business," Hick says, stressing the opportunity in front of Red Hat.

The company is focused on supporting the "open hybrid cloud," enabling IT teams to work across public clouds, data centers and the edge. 

"We're at the intersection of the potential of open source, the potential of open hybrid cloud and software innovation, and that's what gets me excited every day," Hicks says. 

As he settles into his new role as CEO, the main challenge ahead of Hicks will be picking the right industries and partners to pursue at the edge. Red Hat is already working at the edge, in a range of different industries. It's working with General Motors on Ultifi, GM's end-to-end software platform, and it's partnering with ABB, one of the world's leading manufacturing automation companies. It's also working with Verizon on hybrid mobile edge computing. 

Even so, the opportunity is vast. Red Hat expects to see around $250 billion in spending at the edge by 2025. 

"There'll be a tremendous growth of applications that are written to be able to deliver to that," Hicks says. "And so our goals in the short term are to pick the industries and build impactful partnerships in those industries -- because it's newer, and it's evolving."

IBM has announced the expansion of its quantum computing efforts to Africa in a new collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) in South Africa.
Wits University is the first African partner on the IBM Q Network and will be the gateway for academics across South Africa and to the 15 universities who are part of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA).

Wits Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Postgraduate Affairs, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, said: “This is the latest outcome of the joint partnership between IBM Research and Wits, which started in 2016 when IBM opened its second lab in Africa in Wits University’s Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct in Johannesburg. To expand the IBM Q Network to include Wits will drive innovation in frontier-technologies and benefit African-based researchers, academics and students who now have access to decades of quantum computing capabilities at the click of a button.”

Quantum computing promises to be able to solve certain problems, such as chemical simulations and types of optimisation, that will forever be beyond the practical reach of classical machines. IBM first made quantum computers available to the public in May 2016 through its IBM Q Experience quantum cloud service and has doubled the power of its quantum computers annually since 2017.

IBM established the IBM Q Network, a community of Fortune 500 companies, startups, academic institutions and research labs working with IBM to advance quantum computing and explore practical applications for business and science.

Researchers at Wits will investigate the use of quantum computing and machine learning in the fields of cosmology and molecular biology with a specific focus on HIV drug discovery. The teams will also jointly study quantum teleportation, a field pioneered by IBM Fellow Charles Bennett.

AUGUST 2, 2022 — Select UTSA senior leaders recently attended the Government University Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) at the National Academies in Washington, D.C. UTSA was invited to participate in a joint panel addressing global cybersecurity for research infrastructure alongside senior leadership from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Dell Technologies.

GUIRR convened the day-long workshop for its members, experts and invited guests to provide a forum on policy priorities across the research enterprise, including public-private-academic partnerships, science and technology innovation, national security and national prosperity.

Attendees included leadership from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of Maryland, The Ohio State University, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, IBM Research at the Almaden Lab, Office of the Director for National Intelligence, Space Operations at NASA, Atom Research Alliance and Intel Labs.

Alignment to deliver world class research ecosystems

Kendra Ketchum, UTSA CIO and vice president for information management and technology, spoke about the importance of partnerships to drive digital transformation alongside NIST Director and Undersecretary of Commerce Laurie Locascio and Dell Leader Deborah Stokes. Moderated by Al Grasso, immediate past president and CEO of the MITRE Corporation, the panel explored the world-class model UTSA has created in collaboration with Dell and NIST for a high-performing computing research ecosystem and resilient infrastructure.

Over the last two years, UTSA has partnered with Dell to expand its research infrastructure—including hardware, software and virtual environments—and invest in high-performance computing (HPC), enhancing operations and security.

“This group came together to come up with strategic ideation around delivering world class technology for our research enterprise,” Ketchum explained. “My goal was to reduce the time to science by expanding and elevating the research infrastructure and adding more high-performance computing resources. This resulted in researchers who don’t have to worry about standing up their own ecosystems and can focus on obtaining the results of their investigations.”

Investing in the research infrastructure to reduce the time to science

“Investing in our hyperconverged infrastructure allowed us to really lean into Dell's expertise,” Ketchum explained. “Leveraging Dell’s engineering and HPC skills enabled us to conduct infrastructure upgrades and replacements to fill a gap for our research community. We know that if we want to get our researchers to their outcomes faster—reducing the time to science—we must be as committed as they are to strategic thinking and innovation.”

Importance of standardization in cyber for IP protection

The government partnership came into play as UTSA followed the NIST guidelines on cybersecurity, which was a critical piece. As a former vice president for research in academia, Locascio understands the intricacies and nuances of a research environment. Her office is responsible for setting cyber standards for the country.

The security of intellectual property and research investigations is a growing international concern that universities must be prepared to address. Universities and other institutions are subject to hacking attempts by mature nation-state actors and criminals trying to steal identities and research IP to create chaos across the globe. By building a system according to NIST standards, UTSA has created a resilient environment capable of withstanding the more than one million infiltration attempts that take place each day.

UTSA’s new hyperconverged infrastructure, combined with the State of Texas’ cybersecurity framework, gives the institution a very mature platform and portfolio for cybersecurity research. Students get the benefit of having this advanced ecosystem to go out and really research everything in the cyberspace, including data security, incident management and response—all elements of a fully functioning ecosystem.

Based on her collaborative work with industry and government, Ketchum was invited to speak on research IT and security practices. UTSA is a model in this field with IT systems that not only protect researchers and their IP but also the institution and its business continuity—ensuring that the university stays online and operates effectively around the clock.

Partnerships that deliver innovative solutions and secure ecosystems beyond campus

Beyond GUIRR, Ketchum has also been sharing this success story with her peers on the Leadership Board for CIOs (LBCIO) across the U.S. over the last few months. The interest is high.

We built a full disaster recovery and business continuity data center by breaking down the silos and focusing on the desired outcomes of all our stakeholders.”

Jaclyn Shaw, interim vice president for research, economic development, and knowledge enterprise, who now serves as the university’s representative to GUIRR, was also in attendance.

“It was just a stellar opportunity to showcase the work Kendra and the University Technology Solutions team are doing on behalf of UTSA. What we have done under Kendra’s leadership is very much a best practice and a model amongst higher educational institutions in the U.S.,” Shaw said. “It takes industry, it takes government and it takes universities to really build a borderless ecosystem.
