With the passage of the CHIPS+ Act by Congress and its imminent signing by the President of the United States, a lot of attention has been paid to the construction of new semiconductor manufacturing megasites by Intel, TSMC, and Samsung. But beyond the manufacturing side of the semiconductor business, there is a significant need to invest in related areas such as research, talent training, small and medium business development, and academic cooperation. I recently had the opportunity to tour a prime example of such a facility that integrates all these other aspects of chip manufacturing into a tight industry, government, and academic partnership. That partnership has been going on for over 20 years in Albany New York where IBM Research has a nanotechnology center that is located adjacent to the State University of New York (SUNY) Albany campus. With significant investment by New York State through the New York Creates NY CREATES development agency, IBM in close partnership with several universities and industry partners is developing state-of-the-art semiconductor process technologies in working labs for the next generation of computer chips.

The center provides a unique facility for semiconductor research – its open environment facilitates collaboration between leading equipment and materials suppliers, researchers, engineers, academics, and EDA vendors. Presently, IBM has a manufacturing and research partnership with Samsung Electronics and a research partnership was announced with Intel last year. Key chipmaking suppliers such as ASML, KLA, and Tokyo Electric (TEL) have equipment installed, and are working actively with IBM developing advanced processes and metrology for leading edge technologies.

These facilities do not come cheap. It takes billions of dollars of investment and many years of research to achieve each new breakthrough. For example, the High-k metal gate took 15 years to go into products; the FinFET transistor, essential today, took 13 years; and the next generation transistor, the gate-all-around/nano sheet, which Samsung is putting into production now, was in development for 14 years. In addition, the cost to manufacture chips at each new process node is increasing 20-30% and the R&D costs are doubling for each node’s development. To continue supporting this strategic development, there needs to be a partnership between industry, academia, and government.

IBM Makes The Investment

You might ask why IBM, which sold off its semiconductor manufacturing facilities over the years, is so involved in this deep and expensive research. Well, for one, IBM is very, very good at semiconductor process development. The company pioneered several critical semiconductor technologies over the decades. But being good at a technology does not pay the bills, so IBM’s second motivation is that the company needs the best technology for its own Power and Z computers. To that end, IBM is primarily focused on developments that support high-performance computing and AI processing.

Additional strategic suppliers and partners help to scale these innovations beyond just IBM’s contribution. The best equipment from the world-class equipment suppliers provides a testbed for partners to experiment and advance the state-of-the-art technology. IBM along with its equipment partners have built specialized equipment where needed to experiment beyond the capabilities of standard equipment.

But IBM only succeeds if it can transfer the technology from the labs into production. To do so, IBM and Samsung have been working closely on process developments and the technology transfer.

MORE FROM FORBESIBM Goes Vertical To Scale Transistors

The NanoTech Center dovetails with the CHIPS Act in that it will allow the United States to develop leadership in manufacturing technologies. It can also allow smaller companies to test innovative technologies in this facility. The present fab building is running 24/7/365 and is highly utilized, but there’s space to build another building that can double significantly expand the clean room space. There’s also a plan for a building that will be able to support the next generation of ASML EUV equipment called high NA EUV.

The Future is Vertical

The Albany site also is a center for chiplet technology research. As semiconductor scaling slows, unique packaging solutions for multi-die chips will become the norm for high-performance and power-efficient computing. IBM Research has an active program of developing unique 2.5D and 3D die-stacking technologies. Today the preferred substrate for building these multi-die chips is still made from silicon, based on the availability of tools and manufacturing knowledge. There are still unique process steps that must be developed to handle the specialized processing, including laser debonding techniques.

IBM also works with test equipment manufacturers because building 3D structures with chiplets presents some unique testing challenges. Third party EDA vendors also need to be part of the development process, because the ultimate goal of chiplet-based design is to be able to combine chips from different process nodes and different foundries.

Today chiplet technology is embryonic, but the future will absolutely need this technology to build the next generation of data center hardware. The is a situation where the economics and technology are coming together at the right time.

Summary

The Albany NanoTech Center is a model for the semiconductor industry and demonstrates one way to bring researchers from various disciplines and various organizations together to advance the state-of-the-art semiconductor technology. But this model also needs to scale up and be replicated throughout North America. With more funding and more scale, there also needs to be an appropriately skilled workforce. Here is where the US needs to make investments in STEM education on par with the late 1950s Space Race and sites like Albany that offer R&D on leading-edge process development that should inspire more students to go into physics, chemistry, and electrical engineering and not into building the next crypto currency startup.

Tirias Research tracks and consults for companies throughout the electronics ecosystem from semiconductors to systems and sensors to the cloud. Members of the Tirias Research team have consulted for IBM, Intel, GlobalFoundries, Samsung, and other foundries.

Killexams : Three Common Mistakes That May Sabotage Your Security Training

Phishing incidents are on the rise. A report from IBM shows that phishing was the most popular attack vector in 2021, resulting in one in five employees falling victim to phishing hacking techniques.

The Need for Security Awareness Training

Although technical solutions protect against phishing threats, no solution is 100% effective. Consequently, companies have no choice but to involve their employees in the fight against hackers. This is where security awareness training comes into play.

Security awareness training gives companies the confidence that their employees will execute the right response when they discover a phishing message in their inbox.

As the saying goes, "knowledge is power," but the effectiveness of knowledge depends heavily on how it is delivered. When it comes to phishing attacks, simulations are among the most effective forms of training because the events in training simulations directly mimic how an employee would react in the event of an genuine attack. Since employees do not know whether a suspicious email in their inbox is a simulation or a real threat, the training becomes even more valuable.

Phishing Simulations: What does the training include?

It is critical to plan, implement and evaluate a cyber awareness training program to ensure it truly changes employee behavior. However, for this effort to be successful, it should involve much more than just emailing employees. Key practices to consider include:

  • Real-life phishing simulations.
  • Adaptive learning - live response and protection from genuine cyberattacks.
  • Personalized training based on factors such as department, tenure, and cyber experience level.
  • Empowering and equipping employees with an always-on cybersecurity mindset.
  • Data-driven campaigns

Because employees do not recognize the difference between phishing simulations and real cyberattacks, it's important to remember that phishing simulations evoke different emotions and reactions, so awareness training should be conducted thoughtfully. As organizations need to engage their employees to combat the ever-increasing attacks and protect their assets, it is important to keep morale high and create a positive culture of cyber hygiene.

Three common phishing simulation mistakes.

Based on years of experience, cybersecurity firm CybeReady has seen companies fall into these common mistakes.

Mistake #1: Testing instead of educating

The approach of running a phishing simulation as a test to catch and punish "repeat offenders" can do more harm than good.

An educational experience that involves stress is counterproductive and even traumatic. As a result, employees will not go through the training but look for ways to circumvent the system. Overall, the fear-based "audit approach" is not beneficial to the organization in the long run because it cannot provide the necessary training over an extended period.

Solution #1: Be sensitive

Because maintaining positive employee morale is critical to the organization's well-being, provide positive just-in-time training.

Just-in-time training means that once employees have clicked on a link within the simulated attack, they are directed to a short and concise training session. The idea is to quickly educate the employee on their mistake and supply them essential tips on spotting malicious emails in the future.

This is also an opportunity for positive reinforcement, so be sure to keep the training short, concise, and positive.

Solution #2: Inform relevant departments.

Communicate with relevant stakeholders to ensure they are aware of ongoing phishing simulation training. Many organizations forget to inform relevant stakeholders, such as HR or other employees, that the simulations are being conducted. Learning has the best effect when participants have the opportunity to feel supported, make mistakes, and correct them.

Mistake #2: Use the same simulation for all employees

It is important to vary the simulations. Sending the same simulation to all employees, especially at the same time, is not only not instructive but also has no valid metrics when it comes to organizational risk.

The "warning effect" - the first employee to discover or fall for the simulation warns the others. This prepares your employees to respond to the "threat" by anticipating the simulation, thus bypassing the simulation and the training opportunity.

Another negative impact is social desirability bias, which causes employees to over-report incidents to IT without noticing them in order to be viewed more favorably. This leads to an overloaded system and the department IT.

This form of simulation also leads to inaccurate results, such as unrealistically low click-through rates and over-reporting rates. Thus, the metrics do not show the real risks of the company or the problems that need to be addressed.

Solution: Drip mode

Drip mode allows sending multiple simulations to different employees at different times. Certain software solutions can even do this automatically by sending a variety of simulations to different groups of employees. It's also important to implement a continuous cycle to ensure that all new employees are properly onboarded and to reinforce that security is important 24/7 - not just checking a box for minimum compliance.

Mistake #3: Relying on data from a single campaign

With over 3.4 billion phishing attacks per day, it's safe to assume that at least a million of them differ in complexity, language, approach, or even tactics.

Unfortunately, no single phishing simulation can accurately reflect an organization's risk. Relying on a single phishing simulation result is unlikely to provide reliable results or comprehensive training.

Another important consideration is that different groups of employees respond differently to threats, not only because of their vigilance, training, position, tenure, or even education level but because the response to phishing attacks is also contextual.

Solution: Implement a variety of training programs

Behavior change is an evolutionary process and should therefore be measured over time. Each training session contributes to the progress of the training. Training effectiveness, or in other words, an accurate reflection of genuine organizational behavior change, can be determined after multiple training sessions and over time.

The most effective solution is to continuously conduct various training programs (at least once a month) with multiple simulations.

It is highly recommended to train employees according to their risk level. A diverse and comprehensive simulation program also provides reliable measurement data based on systematic behavior over time. To validate their efforts at effective training, organizations should be able to obtain a valid indication of their risk at any given point in time while monitoring progress in risk reduction.

Implement an effective phishing simulation program.

Creating such a program may seem overwhelming and time-consuming. That's why we have created a playbook of the 10 key practices you can use to create a simple and effective phishing simulation. Simply download the CybeReady Playbook or meet with one of our experts for a product demo and learn how CybeReady's fully automated security awareness training platform can help your organization achieve the fastest results with virtually zero effort IT.

Killexams : IBM Annual Cost of Data Breach Report 2022: Record Costs Usually Passed On to Consumers, “Long Breach” Expenses Make Up Half of Total Damage

IBM’s annual Cost of Data Breach Report for 2022 is packed with revelations, and as usual none of them are good news. Headlining the report is the record-setting cost of data breaches, with the global average now at $4.35 million. The report also reveals that much of that expense comes with the data breach version of “long Covid,” expenses that are realized more than a year after the attack.

Most organizations (60%) are passing these added costs on to consumers in the form of higher prices. And while 83% of organizations now report experiencing at least one data breach, only a small minority are adopting zero trust strategies.

Security AI and automation greatly reduces expected damage

The IBM report draws on input from 550 global organizations surveyed about the period between March 2021 and March 2022, in partnership with the Ponemon Institute.

Though the average cost of a data breach is up, it is only by about 2.6%; the average in 2021 was $4.24 million. This represents a total climb of 13% since 2020, however, reflecting the general spike in cyber crime seen during the pandemic years.

Organizations are also increasingly not opting to absorb the cost of data breaches, with the majority (60%) compensating by raising consumer prices separate from any other recent increases due to inflation or supply chain issues. The report indicates that this may be an underreported upward influence on prices of consumer goods, as 83% of organizations now say that they have been breached at least once.

Brad Hong, Customer Success Manager for Horizon3.ai, sees a potential consumer backlash on the horizon once public awareness of this practice grows: “It’s already a breach of confidence to lose the confidential data of customers, and sure there’s bound to be an organization across those surveyed who genuinely did put in the effort to protect against and curb attacks, but for those who did nothing, those who, instead of creating a disaster recovery plan, just bought cyber insurance to cover the org’s operational losses, and those who simply didn’t care enough to heed the warnings, it’s the coup de grâce to then pass the cost of breaches to the same customers who are now the victims of a data breach. I’d be curious to know what percent of the 60% of organizations who increased the price of their products and services are using the extra revenue for a war chest or to actually reinforce their security—realistically, it’s most likely just being used to fill a gap in lost revenue for shareholders’ sake post-breach. Without government regulations outlining restrictions on passing cost of breach to consumer, at the least, not without the honest & measurable efforts of a corporation as their custodian, what accountability do we all have against that one executive who didn’t want to change his/her password?”

Breach costs also have an increasingly long tail, as nearly half now come over a year after the date of the attack. The largest of these are generally fines that are levied after an investigation, and decisions or settlements in class action lawsuits. While the popular new “double extortion” approach of ransomware attacks can drive long-term costs in this way, the study finds that companies paying ransom demands to settle the problem quickly aren’t necessarily seeing a large amount of overall savings: their average breach cost drops by just $610,000.

Sanjay Raja, VP of Product with Gurucul, expands on how knock-on data breach damage can continue for years: “The follow-up attack effect, as described, is a significant problem as the playbooks and solutions provided to security operations teams are overly broad and lack the necessary context and response actions for proper remediation. For example, shutting down a user or application or adding a firewall block rule or quarantining a network segment to negate an attack is not a sustainable remediation step to protect an organization on an ongoing basis. It starts with a proper threat detection, investigation and response solution. Current SIEMs and XDR solutions lack the variety of data, telemetry and combined analytics to not only identify an attack campaign and even detect variants on previously successful attacks, but also provide the necessary context, accuracy and validation of the attack to build both a precise and complete response that can be trusted. This is an even greater challenge when current solutions cannot handle complex hybrid multi-cloud architectures leading to significant blind spots and false positives at the very start of the security analyst journey.”

Rising cost of data breach not necessarily prompting dramatic security action

In spite of over four out of five organizations now having experienced some sort of data breach, only slightly over 20% of critical infrastructure companies have moved to zero trust strategies to secure their networks. Cloud security is also lagging as well, with a little under half (43%) of all respondents saying that their security practices in this area are either “early stage” or do not yet exist.

Those that have onboarded security automation and AI elements are the only group seeing massive savings: their average cost of data breach is $3.05 million lower. This particular study does not track average ransom demands, but refers to Sophos research that puts the most recent number at $812,000 globally.

The study also notes serious problems with incident response plans, especially troubling in an environment in which the average ransomware attack is now carried out in four days or less and the “time to ransom” has dropped to a matter of hours in some cases. 37% of respondents say that they do not test their incident response plans regularly. 62% say that they are understaffed to meet their cybersecurity needs, and these organizations tend to suffer over half a million more dollars in damages when they are breached.

Of course, cost of data breaches is not distributed evenly by geography or by industry type. Some are taking much bigger hits than others, reflecting trends established in prior reports. The health care industry is now absorbing a little over $10 million in damage per breach, with the average cost of data breach rising by $1 million from 2021. And companies in the United States face greater data breach costs than their counterparts around the world, at over $8 million per incident.

Shawn Surber, VP of Solutions Architecture and Strategy with Tanium, provides some insight into the unique struggles that the health care industry faces in implementing effective cybersecurity: “Healthcare continues to suffer the greatest cost of breaches but has among the lowest spend on cybersecurity of any industry, despite being deemed ‘critical infrastructure.’ The increased vulnerability of healthcare organizations to cyber threats can be traced to outdated IT systems, the lack of robust security controls, and insufficient IT staff, while valuable medical and health data— and the need to pay ransoms quickly to maintain access to that data— make healthcare targets popular and relatively easy to breach. Unlike other industries that can migrate data and sunset old systems, limited IT and security budgets at healthcare orgs make migration difficult and potentially expensive, particularly when an older system provides a small but unique function or houses data necessary for compliance or research, but still doesn’t make the cut to transition to a newer system. Hackers know these weaknesses and exploit them. Additionally, healthcare orgs haven’t sufficiently updated their security strategies and the tools that manufacturers, IT software vendors, and the FDA have made haven’t been robust enough to thwart the more sophisticated techniques of threat actors.”

Familiar incident types also lead the list of the causes of data breaches: compromised credentials (19%), followed by phishing (16%). Breaches initiated by these methods also tended to be a little more costly, at an average of $4.91 million per incident.

Global average cost of #databreach is now $4.35M, up 13% since 2020. Much of that are realized more than a year after the attack, and 60% of organizations are passing the costs on to consumers in the form of higher prices. #cybersecurity #respectdataClick to Tweet

Cutting the cost of data breach

Though the numbers are never as neat and clean as averages would indicate, it would appear that the cost of data breaches is cut dramatically for companies that implement solid automated “deep learning” cybersecurity tools, zero trust systems and regularly tested incident response plans. Mature cloud security programs are also a substantial cost saver.

Mon, 01 Aug 2022 10:00:00 -0500 Scott Ikeda en-US text/html https://www.cpomagazine.com/cyber-security/ibm-annual-cost-of-data-breach-report-2022-record-costs-usually-passed-on-to-consumers-long-breach-expenses-make-up-half-of-total-damage/
Killexams : This '90s-Era Quantum Computing Idea Could Lead to a Massive Breakthrough

What's happening

Quantum computer maker Quantinuum proved the merits of 1990s idea, catching and correcting errors as a calculation progresses.

Why it matters

This key step ultimately could potentially make the revolutionary machines practical, tackling problems in areas like materials science and medicine that are out of the reach of conventional computers.

Quantinuum, a leader in the nascent field of quantum computing, said Thursday it advanced a key technique for correcting errors in calculations done by the advanced machines, a development essential for them to fulfill their revolutionary potential.

A Broomfield, Colorado-based team improved its handling of qubits, the machines' fundamental data storage and processing elements. Last year, they linked multiple ordinary qubits into a group called a logical qubit that's more reliable. This year, they got a pair of logical qubits to perform calculations, said David Hayes, leader of the company's theory group.

The work was notable because Quantinuum's error correction technology keeps logical qubits stable longer than conventional qubits, and that's key to coaxing useful work out of quantum computers.

The new achievement could eventually lead to developments that allow quantum computers to crack encryption, design more efficient solar panels and meet other promises of the complex machines. Such potential will likely encourage companies, governments and universities to continue investing in the technology though realizing its potential remains years away.

Quantinuum, created when Cambridge Quantum and Honeywell Quantum Solutions merged in 2021, isn't the only company working on the idea. Big companies like Google, IBM, Intel and Microsoft are racing with startups like Rigetti Computing, IonQ and others to build the first  practical, powerful quantum computers.

Qubits are individual atoms or other elements tiny enough to be dominated by the weird rules of quantum physics. It's those rules that could help quantum computers solve problems that are beyond classical computers. On Quantinuum's H1 quantum computers, that means prodding up to 20 electrically charged ytterbium atoms around with a laser inside a cold, airless chamber -- an "ion trap."

One problem with quantum computers is that qubits are hard to control and easily perturbed, derailing calculations. Logical qubits offer a mechanism to stabilize the situation.

Some qubits in the logical qubit flock are used for the data processing while others are used to interact with an ordinary outside computer. That conventional machine oversees the operation by monitoring the logical qubit's state, checking for errors, and shepherding any errant qubits back into the fold. Quantinuum's system repeats those error correction steps about five times a second.

With its results, Quantinuum has shown error correction ideas developed in the 1990s really are practical, said Russell Stutz, leader of Quantinuum's commercialization efforts.

"There's a path forward to getting lower error rates," Stutz said.

A calculation with two logical qubits is still an early stage toward powerful, fault-tolerant quantum computers. Quantinuum's test performed a simple test chore.

"You need more logical qubits to get to the level where this computer can do something that your classical computer can't simulate," Hayes said. He estimates about 50 are needed, and that, in turn, means hundreds of underlying physical qubits. That's beyond Quantinuum today, though quantum computer makers are gradually headed that direction.

Killexams : Cybersecurity in the Public and Private Sectors- Threats and Solutions

The number of internet users in India is set to reach the 900 million mark by 2025, according to a report by IAMAI and Kantar Research. This figure points towards a growing engaged digital user base in the country. Digital identities are only a natural follow-up to this wave of internet usage. An approximate 1.2 Billion users are registered on India’s digital ID program, ‘Aadhaar, according to McKinsey’s 2019 report. The number has grown further today.

With such a climb in internet users, there are also more significant threats to cybersecurity in India. Since digitalization, India has faced “over 6.07 lakh cyber security incidents” just in the first half of 2021, as reported in the written reply to Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Integrating digital identities into the national framework creates a greater vulnerability for citizens, companies, and firms that rely on digital infrastructure.

The Price of Unpreparedness

Attacks on fragile data protection frameworks thus affect consumer privacy and have an economic impact on a company’s bottom line. According to a 2021 IBM report, the global average data breach cost in 2021 was $4.24 million. This amount is divided into detection and escalation, loss of business, response, and notification. The most common type of data stolen was a consumer’s personally identifiable information – data unique to one consumer, extending to their Digital ID.

India’s Answer: Strengthening Virtual Defense Capabilities

Such attacks also permeate public sector information systems, posing a real threat to the security of a nation’s data. Following such attacks globally, the Indian government has allotted higher budgets to strengthen existing cybersecurity measures and build newer ones. In FY 2022-23, the government allocated INR 515 crores for cybersecurity. They backed this allocation by announcing that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) will monitor any cybersecurity incidents in the country. This body will also issue advisories on threats and appropriate countermeasures for better protection against attacks on data and information. Cyber Security R&D by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology is another major initiative identified for securing Cyberspace with a focus on the promotion of R&D, demonstration, proof of concept, and establishment of test beds for enhancing indigenous skills and capabilities in the cyber security.

Private Companies Bolstering Cybersecurity Efforts

On average, there are approx 150 cybersecurity incidents registered daily in India. With the exponential increase in cyber attacks, companies are implementing effective security governance programs to align organizations’ security programs with the needs of the business to increase trust and reputation with their customers, suppliers, and partners.

Companies are looking to build up their defenses against cyber threats too.A survey conducted by PWC, found that 80% of Indian companies want to increase their cybersecurity budget. While proportions of expenditure vary, the end goal of all these firms is to secure their data and information from impending attacks through malware or ransomware – two types of threats that are becoming more and more visible daily.

Today, robust solutions include highly secure cloud-based labs to host a company’s information systems. Such a setup must be preceded by a top to bottom audit of the company’s pre-existing security measures to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. After close examination, a company may seek solutions from experts on managing and encrypting their data in storage, such that it is challenging to tarnish or tamper with it. Extractions from firmware code can also point a company toward its previously invisible vulnerabilities, giving them a window to fix such gaps.

Solutions must encompass the full range of potential vulnerabilities, including web and mobile applications, cloud infrastructure security, and IoT security. If ignored, the most straightforward security configurations could prove to be the most complicated problems to solve in cybersecurity. In today’s age of rampant misuse of global networks, it is best to work with experts to secure any virtual or digital infrastructure that carries essential data and information. Such steps have been followed rigorously by companies in India looking to spend more on improving security measures to protect their data and consumers’ privacy.

Conclusion

In the age of digital transformation and constant threats to digital safety, consumers are veering towards firms or policies needed for information security. Privacy and security have become important verticals that help consumers choose. Firms that provide the best cybersecurity options will be favored over those that cannot offer accessible security measures against hacking, ransomware, malware, and much more. This is a critical juncture in India and the world, where the most brilliant move is to recognize the genuine threat posed by cyber-attacks and to work with qualified and agile teams to protect data.

Killexams : The “Test of Time” research that advanced our interpretation of Adversarial ML

The 39th International Conference on Machine Learning is currently being held at the Baltimore Convention Centre in Maryland, USA and their ‘Test of Time’ award was awarded to a research work published in 2012 titled, ‘Poisoning attacks against Support Vector Machines’.

This research work was undertaken to demonstrate that not only can an intelligent adversary predict a change in the decision-making function of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) due to malicious input but can also use this prediction to construct malicious data.

Conducted by Battista Biggio, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari along with Blaine Nelson and Pavel Laskov from the Wilhelm Schickard Institute of Computer Science, University of Tubingen—this is one of the earliest research works ever conducted on the poisoning attacks against SVMs.

ICML’s ‘Test of Time’ is awarded to research works presented ten years from the current year in recognition of the impact that the works have caused since their publication to the current research and practice in the field of machine learning.

The research

The research work successfully demonstrates how an intelligent adversary can, to some extent, predict the change of a Support Vector Machine’s (SVM) ‘decision function’ due to malicious input and use this ability to then construct malicious data.

SVMs are supervised machine learning algorithms that can be used for the classification and regression analysis of data groups and can even detect outliers. They are capable of both linear classification and non-linear classification. For non-linear classification, SVMs use a kernel trick.

In the course of the study, the research team made certain assumptions about the attacker’s familiarity with the learning algorithm and their access to underlying data distribution and the training data that the learner may be using. However, this may not be the case in real-world situations where the attacker is more likely to use a surrogate training set drawn from the same distribution.

Based on these assumptions, the researchers were able to demonstrate a technique that any attacker can deploy to create a data point that can dramatically lower classification accuracy in SVMs.

To simulate an attack on the SVM, the researchers used a technique called ‘gradient ascent strategy’, where the gradient is computed based on the properties of the optimal solution of the SVM training problem.

Since it is possible for an attacker to manipulate the optimal SVM solution by interjecting specially crafted attack points, the research demonstrates that it is possible to find such attack points while retaining an optimal solution of the SVM training problem. In addition, it illustrates that the gradient ascent procedure significantly increases the classifier’s test error.

Significance of the research

When this research was published in 2012, contemporary research works related to poisoning attacks were largely focused on detecting simple anomalies.

This work, however, proposed a breakthrough that optimised the impact of data-driven attacks against kernel-based learning algorithms and emphasised the need to consider resistance against adversarial training data as an important factor in the design of learning algorithms.

The research presented in the paper inspired several subsequent works in the space of adversarial machine learning such as adversarial examples for deep neural networks, various attacks on machine learning models and machine learning security.

It is noteworthy that the research in this domain has evolved since then—from focusing on the security of non-deep learning algorithms to understanding the security properties of deep learning algorithms in the context of computer vision and cybersecurity tasks.

Contemporary R&D progress shows that researchers have come up with ‘reactive’ and ‘proactive’ measures to secure ML algorithms. While reactive measures are taken to counter past attacks, proactive measures are preventive in nature.

Timely detection of novel attacks, frequent classifier retraining and verifying the consistency of classifier decisions against training data are considered reactive measures.

Security-by-design defences against ‘white-box attacks’, where the attacker has perfect knowledge of the attacked system and security-by-obscurity against ‘black-box attacks’, where the attacker has no information about the structure or parameter of the system are considered proactive measures.

The importance of employing such measures in present-day research highlights the significance of this paper as the pivotal step in the direction to secure ML algorithms.

By the same token, industry leaders too became increasingly aware of the different kinds of adversarial attacks like poisoning, model stealing and model inversion and recognised that these attacks can inflict significant damage to businesses by breaching data privacy and compromising intellectual property.

Consequently, institutional vigilance about adversarial machine learning is prioritised. Tech giants like Microsoft, Google and IBM have explicitly committed to securing their traditional software systems against such attacks.

Many organisations are however already ahead of the curve in systematically securing their ML assets. Organisations like ‘ISO’ are coming up with rubrics to assess the security of ML systems across industries.

Governments are also signalling industries to build secure ML systems. For instance, the European Union released a checklist to assess the trustworthiness of ML systems.

Amid these concerns, machine learning techniques help detect underlying patterns in large datasets, adapt to new behaviours and aid in decision-making processes, and have thus gained significant momentum in the mainstream discourse.

ML techniques are routinely used to solve big data challenges such as various security-related issues like detecting spam, frauds, worms or other malicious intrusions.

Identifying poisoning as an attack on ML algorithms and the disastrous implications it may have for many businesses and industries like the medical sector, aviation sector, road safety or cyber security concretised the contribution of this paper as one of the first research works that paved the way for adversarial machine learning research.

The authors challenged themselves with the task of finding if such attacks were possible against complex classifiers. Their objective was to identify an optimal attack point that maximised the classification error.

In their work, the research team not only paved the way for adversarial machine learning research, a technique that tricks ML models by providing deceptive data, but also laid the foundation for any research that may help defend against growing threat in AI and ML.

Killexams : IBM report: Middle Eastern consumers pay the price as regional data breach costs reach all-time high

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: IBM, the leading global technology company, has published a study highlighting the importance of cybersecurity in an increasingly digital age. According to IBM Security’s annual Cost of a Data Breach Report,  the Middle East has incurred losses of SAR 28 million from data breaches  in 2022 alone — this figure already exceeding the total amount of losses accrued in each of the last eight years.

The latest edition of the Cost of a Data Breach Report — now in its 17th year — reveals costlier and higher-impact data breaches than ever before. As outlined by the study, the global average cost of a data breach has reached an all-time high of $4.35 million for surveyed organizations. With breach costs increasing nearly 13% over the last two years of the report, the findings suggest these incidents may also be contributing to rising costs of goods and services. In fact, 60% of studied organizations raised their product or services prices due to the breach, when the cost of goods is already soaring worldwide amid inflation and supply chain issues.

Notably, the report ranks the Middle East2 among the top five countries and regions for the highest average cost of a data breach. As per the study, the average total cost of a data breach in the Middle East amounted to SAR 28 million in 2022, the region being second only to the United States on the list. The report also spotlights the industries across the Middle East that have suffered the highest per-record costs in millions; the financial (SAR 1,039), health (SAR 991) and energy (SAR 950) sectors taking first, second and third spot, respectively.

Fahad Alanazi, IBM Saudi General Manager, said: “Today, more so than ever, in an increasingly connected and digital age, cybersecurity is of the utmost importance. It is essential to safeguard businesses and privacy. As the digital economy continues to evolve, enhanced security will be the marker of a modern, world class digital ecosystem.”

He continued: “At IBM, we take great pride in enabling the people, businesses and communities we serve to fulfil their potential by empowering them with state-of-the-art services and support. Our findings reiterate just how important it is for us, as a technology leader, to continue pioneering solutions that will help the Kingdom distinguish itself as the tech capital of the region.”

The perpetuality of cyberattacks is also shedding light on the “haunting effect” data breaches are having on businesses, with the IBM report finding 83% of studied organizations have experienced more than one data breach in their lifetime. Another factor rising over time is the after-effects of breaches on these organizations, which linger long after they occur, as nearly 50% of breach costs are incurred more than a year after the breach.

The 2022 Cost of a Data Breach Report is based on in-depth analysis of real-world data breaches experienced by 550 organizations globally between March 2021 and March 2022. The research, which was sponsored and analyzed by IBM Security, was conducted by the Ponemon Institute.

Some of the key global findings in the 2022 IBM report include:

  • Critical Infrastructure Lags in Zero Trust – Almost 80% of critical infrastructure organizations studied don’t adopt zero trust strategies, seeing average breach costs rise to $5.4 million – a $1.17 million increase compared to those that do. All while 28% breaches amongst these organizations were ransomware or destructive attacks.
  • It Doesn’t Pay to Pay – Ransomware victims in the study that opted to pay threat actors’ ransom demands saw only $610,000 less in average breach costs compared to those that chose not to pay – not including the cost of the ransom. Factoring in the high cost of ransom payments, the financial toll may rise even higher, suggesting that simply paying the ransom may not be an effective strategy.
  • Security Immaturity in Clouds – Forty-three percent of studied organizations are in the early stages or have not started applying security practices across their cloud environments, observing over $660,000 on average in higher breach costs than studied organizations with mature security across their cloud environments.
  • Security AI and Automation Leads as Multi-Million Dollar Cost Saver – Participating organizations fully deploying security AI and automation incurred $3.05 million less on average in breach costs compared to studied organizations that have not deployed the technology – the biggest cost saver observed in the study.

“Businesses need to put their security defenses on the offense and beat attackers to the punch. It’s time to stop the adversary from achieving their objectives and start to minimize the impact of attacks. The more businesses try to perfect their perimeter instead of investing in detection and response, the more breaches can fuel cost of living increases.” said Charles Henderson, Global Head of IBM Security X-Force. “This report shows that the right strategies coupled with the right technologies can help make all the difference when businesses are attacked.”

Over-trusting Critical Infrastructure Organizations

Concerns over critical infrastructure targeting appear to be increasing globally over the past year, with many governments’ cybersecurity agencies urging vigilance against disruptive attacks. In fact, IBM’s report reveals that ransomware and destructive attacks represented 28% of breaches amongst critical infrastructure organizations studied, highlighting how threat actors are seeking to fracture the global supply chains that rely on these organizations. This includes financial services, industrial, transportation and healthcare companies amongst others.

Despite the call for caution, and a year after the Biden Administration issued a cybersecurity executive order that centers around the importance of adopting a zero trust approach to strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity, only 21% of critical infrastructure organizations studied adopt a zero trust security model, according to the report. Add to that, 17% of breaches at critical infrastructure organizations were caused due to a business partner being initially compromised, highlighting the security risks that over-trusting environments pose.

Businesses that Pay the Ransom Aren’t Getting a “Bargain”

According to the 2022 IBM report, businesses that paid threat actors’ ransom demands saw $610,000 less in average breach costs compared to those that chose not to pay – not including the ransom amount paid. However, when accounting for the average ransom payment, which according to Sophos reached $812,000 in 2021, businesses that opt to pay the ransom could net higher total costs - all while inadvertently funding future ransomware attacks with capital that could be allocated to remediation and recovery efforts and looking at potential federal offenses.

The persistence of ransomware, despite significant global efforts to impede it, is fueled by the industrialization of cybercrime. IBM Security X-Force discovered the duration of studied enterprise ransomware attacks shows a drop of 94% over the past three years – from over two months to just under four days. These exponentially shorter attack lifecycles can prompt higher impact attacks, as cybersecurity incident responders are left with very short windows of opportunity to detect and contain attacks. With “time to ransom” dropping to a matter of hours, it's essential that businesses prioritize rigorous testing of incident response (IR) playbooks ahead of time. But the report states that as many as 37% of organizations studied that have incident response plans don’t test them regularly.

Hybrid Cloud Advantage

The report also showcased hybrid cloud environments as the most prevalent (45%) infrastructure amongst organizations studied. Averaging $3.8 million in breach costs, businesses that adopted a hybrid cloud model observed lower breach costs compared to businesses with a solely public or private cloud model, which experienced $5.02 million and $4.24 million on average respectively. In fact, hybrid cloud adopters studied were able to identify and contain data breaches 15 days faster on average than the global average of 277 days for participants.

The report highlights that 45% of studied breaches occurred in the cloud, emphasizing the importance of cloud security. However, a significant 43% of reporting organizations stated they are just in the early stages or have not started implementing security practices to protect their cloud environments, observing higher breach costs3 . Businesses studied that did not implement security practices across their cloud environments required an average 108 more days to identify and contain a data breach than those consistently applying security practices across all their domains.

Additional findings in the 2022 IBM report include:

  • Phishing Becomes Costliest Breach Cause – While compromised credentials continued to reign as the most common cause of a breach (19%), phishing was the second (16%) and the costliest cause, leading to $4.91 million in average breach costs for responding organizations.
  • Healthcare Breach Costs Hit Double Digits for First Time Ever– For the 12th year in a row, healthcare participants saw the costliest breaches amongst industries with average breach costs in healthcare increasing by nearly $1 million to reach a record high of $10.1 million.
  • Insufficient Security Staffing – Sixty-two percent of studied organizations stated they are not sufficiently staffed to meet their security needs, averaging $550,000 more in breach costs than those that state they are sufficiently staffed.

Killexams : Can an AI personality finder revolutionize the retail experience?

(Source – Shutterstock)

Over the years, the retail experience online continues to see innovations in many ways. Be it on an e-commerce app or retail website, the experience provided to consumers is often the most important aspect for any business.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a game changer for the retail experience. In fact, according to a study by Mordor Intelligence, AI has been driving faster business decisions in marketing, e-commerce, product management, and other business areas by decreasing the gap from insights to action.

When it comes to AI in retail, organizations in the retail industry use machine learning and deep learning technology to offer a more personalized experience to the end-users and provide an interactive environment for them. A study by IBM Corporation also showed that the adoption of AI in retail and consumer products industries is expected to leap from 40% of companies currently to more than 80% in three years.

As such, customers today want to be able to get all the information they can about a product when shopping online, This includes avoiding the need of going out to physically test a product out. For example, when it comes to clothing, some apps have now enabled augmented reality (AR) technology whereby users can see how the product looks on them before making a purchase.

For products that do not support virtual try-ons, like facial products, some platforms have opted for shoppertainment, whereby the product is demonstrated live via video by a brand ambassador or even just normal consumers. While shoppertainment has led to a boost in sales for such products, it still lacked the personalization consumers really desired.

Interestingly enough, this may soon change thanks to enhancements in AI for facial recognition. Perfect Corp, a leading AI and AR beauty and fashion tech solutions provider, has unveiled its AI Personality Finder.

retail experience

The AI Personality Finder is a groundbreaking addition to its comprehensive suite of AI and AR SaaS solutions. The first-of-its-kind solution features precision AI, powered by Perfect Corp’s patented AgileFace technology, to deliver a more personalized product matching experience to consumers. The solution pairs state-of-the-art AI-powered facial features mapping with psychological big data in order to identify key personality traits, and provide consumers with personalized product recommendations across beauty, fashion, and fragrance.

With that said, the retail experience when it comes to facial products may soon be revolutionized by this new recognition technology. Anchored in The Big Five Personality Traits, a gold standard in psychology, which comprises extroversion, conscientiousness, openness, agreeableness, and neuroticism, the advanced AI engine categorizes facial features and detects up to 65 types of unique facial attributes. The AI-powered solution then identifies key personality traits based on this analysis and offers personalized product recommendations best fit the customer’s unique personality.

To ensure the accuracy of the results, the AI Personality Finder leverages big data sourced from over one million face reading results and integrates with facial detection technology to generate personalized analysis. The accuracy of the AI Personality results has been clinically proven to be highly precise.

According to Alice Chang, Perfect Corp. Founder, and CEO, “As consumer demands evolve, personalization has become a top priority, and brands must provide immersive shopping experiences that match each consumer with their perfect-fit product. Our new AI Personality Finder allows brands to enhance their shopping journey with personalized product recommendations powered by advanced AI tech and personality insights.”

Perhaps in the future, the AI Personality Finder can be adapted to other use cases as well, providing consumers the best insights they need.

Killexams : Bobidi launches to reward developers for testing companies’ AI models

In the rush to build, test and deploy AI systems, businesses often lack the resources and time to fully validate their systems and ensure they’re bug-free. In a 2018 report, Gartner predicted that 85% of AI projects will deliver erroneous outcomes due to bias in data, algorithms or the teams responsible for managing them. Even Big Tech companies aren’t immune to the pitfalls — for one client, IBM ultimately failed to deliver an AI-powered cancer diagnostics system that wound up costing $62 million over 4 years.

Inspired by “bug bounty” programs, Jeong-Suh Choi and Soohyun Bae founded Bobidi, a platform aimed at helping companies validate their AI systems by exposing the systems to the global data science community. With Bobidi, Bae and Choi sought to build a product that lets customers connect AI systems with the bug-hunting community in a “secure” way, via an API.

The idea is to let developers test AI systems and biases — that is, the edge cases where the systems perform poorly — to reduce the time needed for validation, Choi explained in an email interview. Bae was previously a senior engineer at Google and led augmented reality mapping at Niantic, while Choi was a senior manager at eBay and headed the “people engineering” team at Facebook. The two met at a tech industry function about 10 years ago.

“By the time bias or flaws are revealed from the model, the damage is already irrevocable,” Choi said. “For example, natural language processing algorithms [like OpenAI’s GPT-3] are often found to be making problematic comments, or mis-responding to those comments, related to hate speech, discrimination, and insults. Using Bobidi, the community can ‘pre-test’ the algorithm and find those loopholes, which is actually very powerful as you can test the algorithm with a lot of people under certain conditions that represent social and political contexts that change constantly.”

To test models, the Bobidi “community” of developers builds a validation dataset for a given system. As developers attempt to find loopholes in the system, customers get an analysis that includes patterns of false negatives and positives and the metadata associated with them (e.g., the number of edge cases).

Exposing sensitive systems and models to the outside world might supply some companies pause, but Choi asserts that Bobidi “auto-expires” models after a certain number of days so that they can’t be reverse-engineered. Customers pay for service based on the number of “legit” attempts made by the community, which works out to a dollar ($0.99) per 10 attempts.

Choi notes that the amount of money developers can make through Bobidi — $10 to $20 per hour — is substantially above the minimum wage in many regions around the world. Assuming Choi’s estimations are rooted in fact, Bobidi bucks the trend in the data science industry, which tends to pay data validators and labelers poorly. The annotators of the widely used ImageNet computer vision dataset made a median wage of $2 per hour, one study found, with only 4% making more than $7.25 per hour.

Pay structure aside, crowd-powered validation isn’t a new idea. In 2017, the Computational Linguistics and Information Processing Laboratory at the University of Maryland launched a platform called Break It, Build It that let researchers submit models to users tasked with coming up with examples to defeat them. Elsewhere, Meta maintains a platform called Dynabench that has users “fool” models designed to analyze sentiment, answer questions, detect hate speech and more.

But Bae and Choi believe the “gamified” approach will help Bobidi stand out from the pack. While it’s early days, the vendor claims to have customers in augmented reality and computer vision startups, including Seerslab, Deepixel and Gunsens.

The traction was enough to convince several investors to pledge money toward the venture. Today, Bobidi closed a $5.8 million seed round with participation from Y Combinator, We Ventures, Hyundai Motor Group, Scrum Ventures, New Product Experimentation (NPE) at Meta, Lotte Ventures, Atlas Pac Capital and several undisclosed angel investors.

Of note, Bobidi is among the first investments for NPE, which shifted gears last year from building consumer-facing apps to making seed-stage investments in AI-focused startups. When contacted for comment, head of NPE investments Sunita Parasuraman said via email: “We’re thrilled to back the talented founders of Bobidi, who are helping companies better validate AI models with an innovative solution driven by people around the globe.”

“Bobidi is a mashup between community and AI, a unique combination of expertise that we share,” Choi added. “We believe that the era of big data is ending and we’re about to enter the new era of quality data. It means we are moving from the era — where the focus was to build the best model given with the datasets — to the new era, where people are tasked to find the best dataset given with the model-complete opposite approach.”

Choi said that the proceeds from the seed round will be put toward hiring — Bobidi currently has 12 employees — and building “customer insights experiences” and various “core machine learning technologies.” The company hopes to triple the size of its team by the end of the year despite economic headwinds.
